Hyper-V Storage Live Migration: Copy instead of move?

$

Have a 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster with a HP MSA 2000 Storage. No storage pools or storage spaces, just 4 LUN's with NTFS Volumes that are all converted to CSV's.

Have to perform VM migration from VM's that resides on a CSV with an underlying RAID 5 volume to another CSV with an underlying RAID 50 volume. Could perform the operation without any error from the failover cluster manager (move - virtual machine storge) on the VM.

The problem is that when I check C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1 (the old place of the VM) and C:\ClusterStorage\Volume2 (the new place of the VM), all VM files are still in both locations! Apparently, a "Copy" operation instead of a "move" operation was performed.

- Why are the source files not have been deleted after the successful storage migration?

- Is it safe to manually delete the VM files in C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Shrink VHD

I'd like some feedback for the situation I have found that I need to fix please.

I inherited a 4 year old system setup by someone who never installed Hyper-v before. The host is 08 r2 and was setup with fixed size VHD's running SBS 2011 and a Data server taking all the space on the drives so there is no room for VSS to run and the O/S partition is set to 50GB. The host is under powered and I have very little storage - nill! The VHD's do have room to be reduced by a significant amount which would then allow the VSS to run and then could back up the host properly. This is a production system so I don't have the time to take it down for hours

What are my options?

Thanks!

Replication 2012 R2 to 20012 R1

I have 3 2012 R1 servers and have just purchased a 2012 R2 server. When I try to replicate a VM from the 2012 R2 to a 2012 R1 server it tells me that I can't. Anyone got any suggestions for the best way forward. I have Exchange on the R1 servers plus other very important apps and servers. - Thanks - Ken

Hyper-V Replication

Hi

I have recently setup Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V replication for VM's in our Dubai Datacentre to replicate to our UK Datacentre. We have a 10MB MPLS link with around 200ms latency. I have the following question:-

VM1 - Has one 38GB Fixed VHDX file with 30GB used

VM2 - Has one 38GB Fixed VHDX file with 15GB Used

Would VM2 replicate quicker than VM1 because there is a large amount of white/unused space?

Thanks in advance for any comments

Remote Desktop Connection on Hyper-V

I am currently researching on Hyper-V before testing it out. I have read on the web that Hyper-V virtual machine connections utilizes the RDP protocol, and can be accessed using the vmconnect.exe. I am planning on testing Linux and OSes along with Windows.  However, I wonder is it possible for me to connect to the virtual machine using just the normal Remote Desktop Connection application (mstsc.exe)?  I know that it is always possible by configuring Windows virtual machines, but what about Linux virtual machines? Is it possible for Linux virtual machines to be accessed through the normal RDC client?  If so, can Mac and mobile versions of RDC do the same?

Hi,

I configured hyper-V in windows server-2012. I have configured Xampp server in that Hyper-V machine. The IP address of the Hyper-V machine is 192.168.50.68.

Iam unable to access that Xampp server from other system with the IP address. And iam unable to ping to that Hyper-V server from other machines in the network. When i try to ping to that IP, it it saying as destination host unreachable.

Remote Desktop Gateway threw WMBus (Enchanced Session Mode)?

Hi.

I am currently investigating the possibility to run a remote desktop gateway on an virtual machine, and connecting to it (udp) threw the wmbus instead of a network adapter. It such a thing possible? Basically what I am asking is if I get use the VMBUS to connect to machine as i would a network adapter (on a specific upd port).

I ran across a post enabling debugging threw the VMBUS (I think): http://withinrafael.com/how-to-set-up-synthetic-kernel-debugging-for-hyper-v-virtual-machines/ if this is any way related to my question.

Cheers

VSS snapshot of VM in a SMB3 Share over a second nic

Hi all,

we are currently implementing a backup solution to back up our HyperV2012R2 Failover Cluster VM's. The VM's have their disks on a 2012 R2 StorageSpaces Server shared via SMB3. The 'file server vss agent' service is installed on the storage system.

The HyperV host has several nics.

-One 1Gbit nic for management. The Host is registered in AD with this nic and the DNS entry points to his DNS name 'server.domain.local'

- One 10Gbit nic for the SMB Storage traffic in another subnet. The storage machine has a second Name who points to the ip of the 10G nic 'storage.domain.local'

- Other nics for cluster communication and VM traffic

The VMs are configured with the 10G name of the storage server and everything works well with hyperv.

Everytime i try to back up a machine (via the Software or with the Shell on an Hyper-V Host via DISKSHADOW) there is the following error message:

--------

DISKSHADOW> add volume \\storage.domain.local\vms01\server01

The provider does not support volume shadow copies for this volume in this context.
You must either change the context or add a different volume.
Note that changing the context might cause existing volumes in the shadow copy set to become unsupported.

--------

When i use his AD DNS name it works:

--------

DISKSHADOW> add volume \\server.domain.local\vms01\server01

DISKSHADOW> create

....

--------

Am i missing something? Has anybody an idea what the problem could be? Do I have to register the second name or nic in the storage server system or in the VSS providers?

Thank you for any help!

What is the best free backup solution for Hyper-V R2/2012? CSV support is necessary

Hi,

I need so guidance, please.

I’m planning to deploy a free backup solution for my virtual environment and I need your advice. I have the following configuration:

Failover Cluster:

  • Two Dell Servers
  • OS: Windows 2012 STD
  • Each server has two AMD Opteron 4180 6C @ 2.6 GHZ
  • 16 GB – RAM (supports 256GB)
  • QNAP NAS (CSV)
  • It’s hosting a DC, an Exchange 2010 and soon a SharePoint 2013 VM

Standalone Hyper-V:

  • Dell Server
  • OS: Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter
  • It has two Intel Xeon E5520 @ 2.2 GHZ
  • 16 GB - RAM
  • It’s hosting 3 VMs

In my research I found these apps. All of them are limited in some way but they do the job:

  • Veeam Backup Free Edition v7
  • Altaro Hyper-V Backup
  • Unitrends Enterprise Backup
  • PHD Virtual Backup for Hyper-V
  • HV Backup from CodePlex
  • Windows Server Backup (WSB)

What is your experience with them? What would you recommend?

When it comes to money, which one is more affordable? (In case I want to buy the full version)

Thanks in advanced.

Hyper-V vSwitch external connection not working when connected to 100mb switchport

$

I added 2 new servers to my existing Hyper-v 2012 server core failover cluster and there are many physical network connections on these servers.  One of the network connections on the new servers goes to a switch that doesn't have any additional 1gb connections and only has 100mb ports available.  The existing servers are connected to 1gb ports and they work fine.  The new servers are connected to the 100mb ports and when the host is setup with an IP on that network, I can ping other devices just fine but when I setup a vswitch connected to this external network adapter and share it with the host, I can ping between a Guest VM and the host but I can't ping on the external network.  So it appears that a Hyper-v vswitch doesn't autonegotiate with an external network connection that is set for autonegotiate on the switch but limited to 100mb.  I switch the cables between a server that ha 1gb connection put it into the new server and it communicates just fine but the old server won't communicate on 100mb port.

Does anyone know how to setup the vswitch external network connection so that it will communicate on a 100mb external network?

Trunk mode vlan to a VM with 8 vNIC's - targetting one specific vNIC

$

Hi all

I've popped a question into the Powerhsell forum this morning, and realised it may have been more suitable in Hyper-V section due to the nature of the question. Apologies if dual posting is not the done thing.

My original question can be seen here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/scriptcenter/en-US/5b12e416-ffc9-4391-b3f1-91fdb192f11a/hyperv-trunk-mode-to-vm-how-to-target-a-specific-virtual-nic-using-powershell?forum=winserverpowershell

Essentially, my question is around a VM that currently has 8 x vNIC's, but needs to communicate over 9 x vlans at present. I have attempted the following command in a test environment, but I can't see how this would comms over a specific vNIC; it looks like its a global command to the target VM:

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -VMName test1 -Trunk -AllowedVlanIdList "1-5" -NativeVlanId 6

Is there a way to target a specific vNIC on a VM with the above command at all, or is there a better way to enable trunk mode to the intended VM please?

Thanks

Paul

Switched Off by Virtual Switches

Hi - I have read a lot about configuring virtual switch configurations.  However, I still don't know enough to say with authority how our LAN should be set up.  Its complicated.  No new hardware allowed.

I have two 2012R2 Standard Servers with two VMs (same OS as host), one as a replicate server.  One VM is Web, the other SQL 2008R2.  There are twenty clients accessing the SQL Server via web services.  Little or no direct access to SQL Server.  The hosts have 4 1GB connections into a L2 Switch (Cisco 3750 1GB 48 ports) and two 10Gb connections unused.  The SQL Server has a db on a VHDX disk stored on a SAN that requires TBs of storage.  The clients have two 1GB ports running W7.  Doesn't appear Intel NIC teaming has any bandwidth affect.

I want to maximize throughput between the clients and the SQL Server.  Should I team the 4 ports on the hosts system into one vSwitch?  Should I dedicate a host port to each VM (SR-IOV)?  Should I create an internal vSwitch between the Web and SQL Server VMs?  Can the 10Gb ports be used back to back between servers for something?  Both VMs run on the same server.  Doesn't appear to be CPU or memory limited.  But, should I move one to the replicate server solely for network considerations?

I know its a lot to ask, but any opinions are welcome.

Can't create a Virtual Machine on new host - Error (2915)

This error is appearing when a Virtual Machine is created from scratch, or from a template. I've tried all of the recommendations I can find. All updates are in place, VMM reports agents are current, server is "OK". VMM Agent is running. Rebooted many times.

Error (2915)
The Windows Remote Management (WS-Management) service cannot process the request. The object was not found on the server (xxxxxx).

WinRM: URL: [http://xxxxx:5985], Verb: [GET], Resource: [http://schemas.microsoft.com/wbem/wsman/1/wmi/root/virtualization/v2/Scvmm_EthernetSwitchPortInternalSettingData?InstanceID=Microsoft:Definition\1f59a509-a6ba-4aba-8504-b29d542d44bb\Default]

Unknown error (0x80338000)

Recommended Action
Ensure that the VMM agent is installed and running. If the error persists, restart the virtualization server (xxxxx) and then try the operation again.

This error can also happen due to an older version of the VMM agent on the virtualization server. Ensure that the VMM agent is upgraded to the latest version, and then try the operation again.

Storage configuration on 2008 r2 Hyper V

$

I work for an IT company that just recently signed a client that uses a clustered Hyper-V environment running on Windows Server 2008r2, and uses Shared Cluster Storage or Shared Volume.  The setup seems very strange to me.  They are configured in a fail over cluster, and both Hosts have their own servers running on them.  They both store their VMs at C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1, which is really an iSCSI connection to a SAN.

On Host1 you can see the 7TB drive in Disk Management and it shows as online, but there are no drive letters or folder path assigned to it.  In Failover Cluster Manager, you can see that Host1 is the owner.  Host1 also holds the Quorum drive (I do believe it was on Host2 before)

On Host2 you can see the 7TB drive in Disk Management but it shows as offline, and of course no drive letter or path assigned to it.

Both hosts use this volume, and somehow it is mapped to C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1.  Is this how a normal Hyper-V storage cluster looks and works?  We are able to move servers from one host to the other no problem, and creating a file or folder on one C drive shows up on the other.  Both Hosts have been up for over 390 days, and im wondering if something was changed and removed and when we reboot the hosts if they are going to lose their mapping to the shared volume, or is this is really configured somewhere else like in either Hyper-V manager or Failover cluster manager that I am just not seeing

Thanks

Hyper V Replication: The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open. (0x800704C8).

Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'XXXXXXX': The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open. (0x800704C8).

I have seen this error discussed at length and the common culprit seems to be A/V. This is not the case for me. I got this error when checking replication health on a VM that fails replication almost daily. I usually resume it and it syncs data and continues to successfully replicate to the DR site until it fails a day or two later. Now, it won't resume. There is no A/V to blame and I am at a loss. I have a 5 node cluster on a san for my primary and a 3 node cluster on a san for my secondary. I have 43 VMs that replicate normally with very few failures. Not sure if this is any help, but we run BizTalk on this VM.

Hyper V hosts with Cluster Shared Volume do not provide Shared VHDX ability

$

Hi there, i've configured a pair of Hyper V hosts (UCS B230 M2) with SAN-Boot and access to a Shared Fiber Channel LUN.

No matter what I try, when I add a SCSI Adapter and one VHDX virtual disk to a VM, the option for "Advanced" never shows up therefore I can not share the VHDX file between another VM, which prevents any VM based clustering from working (IE: Clustered SQL server)

Here are the settings I have configured:

-----------------------------------------------

The LUN has been formatted with NTFS

The Hyper V hosts have been configured as a Windows Cluster with an IP address and the Fiber Channel LUN configured as a Cluster Shared Volume

I follows the guides below

Create a CSV
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn265980.aspx

Create a shared VHDX
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn282283.aspx

----------------------------------------------

Further details:

Two HyperV server core hosts built
Both joined to AD
Both joined to a Windows failover cluster
One 2TB Fibre Channel LUN presented from an EMC VNX array to both hosts
LUN formatted as NTFS
LUN created as a Cluster Shared Volume
Cluster Shared Volume present on both HyperV hosts
VM created within the Cluster Shared Volume
VM Booted up and Windows 2012 has been installed
VM gracefully shut down
Through the HyperV Manager, going in to VM settings, create a SCSI adapter, create a new VHDX file inside the CSV, the “Advanced” option for the VHDX is not present, therefore the option to make the VHDX file shared is not available

I have followed all steps in the Microsft Technet pages to create a CSV and a VM with Shared VHDX

I’ve cleared all settings and restarted multiple times, but this option is not present
