Hi all,

I have been running Windows 8.1 and in Hyper-V Manager, i can see 2 VM ( 1 Linux-Ubuntu , 1 Win 7 ) for couple of months.

Few days ago as usual i wanted to connect one of them while they were running but it did not work. I tried actions below already:

- Checked the event logs and they were saying vmconnect is crashing

- add new VM, delete existing one

-add/delete/modify virtual swtich and add/delete/modify virtual switch accordingly the connected VM

- restart Hyper-V Management services from services.msc

I dont know what is going on... When i open Hyper-V Manager i can start/stop VMs and i can see from preview that they are running.

I have a workstation with 3 VMs. I am not a expert in IT. but I need atleast one of these VMs on second socket.

when I check the processor settings of VM this is what I see.

Processors:8

Sockets : 1

and this is the same for all VMs.

Does reading Hyper-V VM's KVP should be started?

Hi

I've number of VM in Hyper V (2008 R2). I want to know whether all the VMs has the Integration Services installed or not. I'm using KVPs (Key-Value Pair Data Item) WMI API, but I able to query the KVPs only when the VM started. Reading only one KVP, should I start VM one by one??!!.. (I know KVPs written in Guest Registry...)

Can I read the KVP without starting the VM?

Is there a way to connect multiple Hyper-V hosts to a CSV LUN without manually logging into each and opening the iSCSI Initiator GUI?

Rebooting a host after updates applied...

Hi forum,

What is the best way to reboot a host server after updates? Do I shut down the guests first or if I reboot the host, does it automatically reboot the guests at the same time?

Thank you,

Jeremy

Hyper V on Win Server 2012 throwing false out of space alerts and then intermittently pausing VM's (When Veeam runs)

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 machine running Hyper V with 6 virtual machines on it. My issue is each of the machines have a status saying they are running out of disk space.  Neither of the hard drives on my host are low and none of the VHD's are low...which as long as they work, not a big deal. The issue that we're running into is when Veeam runs backup jobs some of my VMs will pause. The odd part is we might have 2 to 5 of the 6 machines pause maybe once a month, so it's not happening consistently. We've contacted Veeam support and they've been useless, they advised we upgrade to Veeam 8 which made no change. We have a number of other virtual hosts with virtual machines being backed up by Veeam that never have this issue... Is this a Hyper V issue or a Veeam issue? Any advise would be appreciated!

installing hyper V Server on a slow drive but datastores on a 1500 RPM SAS

If I install hyper V on a small slow dive eg 60gb 5400 RPM Sata but have the DataStores on a 1500 RPM SAS drive

will the slow drive for the hypervisor slow the access down for datastores?

I plan to have 3 win2012r2 separate server installs on the sas drives.

Thanks

Error connecting to VM guest on Host VMM console.

Hi all,

I know there is alot of post on this topic but i need mine to be clarifed.

I current is running a 2k8R2 full installation as my Host Hyper-v server.

I created couple of guests on the server and is currently operational but some random times i will get the following Error when i need to connect to the VM using the VMM on the host machine.

Error Message: Cannont Connect to the Virtual Machine. Try to Connect again. if Problem persists, contact your system administrator. Would you like to try again?

The server is still working fine in the background however i am unable to connect to it console. The problem seems to go away after a reboot/shutdown of the VM but this is not acceptable if this belongs to a production VM.

Any advise on this type of issue.

Help Setting up a Converged Network for Hyper-V 2012 R2 using 2 10Gbe nics - Questions / Help

We have 2 R820 Dell servers with 4 10Gbe nics-

We plan or have currently setup the following :

Windows 2012 R2 DC

  • 2 10Gbe nics in a Team for iSCSI traffic (Storage)
  • 2 10Gbe nics in a Team for Management / Production / CSV-HB / LM

Questions we have:

What is the role of the "Management Network"? Is this role to be the management of the Host and Hyper-V via SCVMM?

Which Network should have the default gateway configured and DNS in AD ? Management or Production?

We have a current setup that was done with out a management network initially and just a production network, the VSwitch was set to AllowManagmentOS: True (This I read a lot should be false - right? and if so what are the implications of changing it now or can it be without interrupting the current setup?)

Thanks for any help and if you need more information no problem -

Internal Switch DHCP

Hi

I have a host machine Server 2012 R2 with AD, DHCP and DNS plus the hyper v role. I have made a Win 8.1 VM. I have set up and internal switch and want the VM to get and DHCP address from the host. Both host and vm are connected to the internal switch and I have enabled VLAN id. I have binded the dhcp server on the host to the internal swtich/apaters. Is this possible to do as I can only get a 169 address on the VM ?

Thanks

Can you use NIC Teaming for Replica Traffic in a Hyper-V 2012 R2 Cluster

$

We are in the process of setting up a two node 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster and will be using the Replica feature to make copies of some of the hosted VM's to an off-site, standalone Hyper-V server.

We have planned to use two physical NIC's in an LBFO Team on the Cluster Nodes to use for the Replica traffic but wanted to confirm that this is supported before we continue?

Cheers for now

Hyper-v mount hard drive

Hello all,

I am running Hyper-v on MS Server 2012 R-2 as the host with various clients.  I am not able to find how to use a hard drive as storage that will be mounted to a virtual client. In short the storage will be for a repository that is managed with Scientific Linux 7.  I can give more details if preferred.  I have looked extensively but cannot find a tutorial for this specific scenario.

I appreciate any insight,

Joe

tried to add 2012AD to 2008R2 AD, got error Unnamed VM could not initialize (0x80070005).

Had a SAS controller failure on a Dell R710, that house Exchange 2010, so was trying to stand up Exchange 2013 in coexistence mode, as I got Exchange 201 VM back up. On another R710, I had the DC 2009 R2 on a VM, so on a 3rd R710, I started a 2012R2 AD and joined to domain so I could use the second R710 as a host for 1st that failed to export VMs and save them.

The DNS for whole network went down and I discovered the DC on the second R710 had stopped, Tried to start it, but got failure to initialize 0x80070005. I noticed that the avhd file no longer exists.

Hyper V Manager can on longer manager all virtual machines

We have this issue have in few client of ours running 2012 or 2012 R2. From time to time those Hyper V base will lose the ability to manage all the virtual machines. There is nothing in Hyper V manager and you can't add itself into the management console. Restart the hyper V manager service do nothing for it. the only way we can do is get into each each vms to shut them down and do a  restart on the hyper V base OS. Those affected some are clustered some are just stand alone.

Hello,

I get below error while starting one of the Virutual Machine. I noticed that "NT Virtual Machine" permissions are missing from Virutal Machine directory.  When i try to add it to acls i cannot browse any group by the name "NT Virtual Machine or"Virtual Machine". I am using windows server 2008 R2 std.

I saw an article to add it using "Icacl" but that didnt work either. I keep getting below error.

Internal Switch DHCP

Hi

I have a host machine (Sever 2012 R2) and I have installed a VM (Win 8.1) The host has AD, DNS and DHCP as well as Hyper V Role. I have set up an internal switch and connected both virtual interfaces to it - host and VM. The VM does not get a DHCP address from the host. Satic IP's work fine. Can this be done - host supply VM with an DHCP address ?

Thanks

Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster: possible config issue

$

Hi,

I've built a test cluster in my lab. The kit consists of:

2 Hosts (5 X 1GB nics each).

1 X 16 port switch

1 server with 2012R2 (has the iSCSI target installed.

1 VM on another host which acts as a DC/ DNS for the cluster.

on each host server, nic allocation is as follows:

nic1 (USB): Management network (host 1:192.168.2.40, Host2: 192.168.2.41)

nic2&3 (team): VM Access Network (no ip as it's just a virtual switch)

nic4: iSCSI1 (Host1: 192.168.50.10, Host2: 192.168.51.10)

nic5: iSCSI2 (Host1: 192.168.50.20, Host2: 192.168.51.20)

MPIO is installed and configured.

On the iSCSI target, I have 1 nic for the network and 2 nics for iSCSI (192.168.51.30, 192.168.50.30).

All three servers run Windows Server 2012R2 Enterprise and the two hosts have failover clustering and the hyper-v role installed. All the iSCSI traffic is VLAN'd on the same switch (VLAN50).

There is a Quorum disk on the iSCSI target and a CSV for Virtual Hard Disks. The Quorum disk shows on the owner as Drive Q. The CSV drives can only be seen in disk management or server manager>disks. on both hosts

To test I've created 2 HA VMs and live migrated VM's them between both hosts and that works fine.

I've powered down each host and the VMs come up on the other host(For example, VMs are on Host1 and I power it down. If I log onto host 2, they will then power up).

I've tested the teaming by removing 1 nic cable at a time and that's fine as well. I've tested MPIO/ iSCSI by removing 1 cable at a time and everything is ok.

The issue is as follows:

Scenario1: Disk Quorum Owner is Host 2, I have a running VM on host 1. If I unplug the cables from both iSCSI nics on host 1, Host2 goes offline (I can't ping or connect to it, VMs on Host 1 go off, VMs on Host 2 go off, failover clustering manager on host one cannot find the cluster). If I reboot Host 2, everything works fine. The VMs startup on Host1. Not sure why host2 goes offline. Can anyone please advise?

Scenario2: Disk Quorum Owner is Host 2 owner of data CSVs is Disk 2, I have a running VM on host 2. If I unplug the cables from both iSCSI nics on Host 2, Host2 does not go offline. Instad all CSVs and Quorum move to Host1 ( VMs on Host 1 run as normal, VMs on Host 2 run as normal, failover clustering manager on both hosts work as normal and the csvs are shown as mounted on host2). How is this possible/ is this expected behavior?

Thanks very much,

Regards,

HA

Virtual machine vlan changed

I have a weird issue where the vlan of a virtual machine is being changed without our intervention. I've scoured the event logs on the host and cannot find anything. We noticed a VM lost network communication. In the jobs in scvmm we found the AccessVlan was changed from what we set to 0. We had to reconnect the VM. Environment is Windows 2012 (NOT r2) and scvmm 2012 (also not r2).

Windows 8.1 / Hyper-V : Failed while adding virtual Ethernet switch connections

I used to have a virtual switch that was bound to my wireless adapter. It was at one point removed, but now I want to re-create it.

But, now Hyper-V throws this error any time I try to bind a virtual switch to my wireless adapter:

Error applying Virtual Switch Properties changes

Failed while adding virtual Ethernet switch connections.

Ethernet port '{Guid}' bind failed: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002).

I've tried uninstalling/re-installing my network adapter. My efforts have had no effect.
