I am experiencing an issue when I removed the Wireless device and then re-installed it on Hyper-V Windows 8.

The error states : "Failed while modifying virtual Ethernet Switch connection settings" followed by "Ethernet port {f...} bind failed unspecified error (0x80004005)"

Is anyone else experiencing this kind of issue?

VM Nic's on Hyper V not getting throughput

$

Hi,

I am new to creating Hyper V host machines so not sure where to look for this issue. I created a Server 2012 R2 Hyper V host with 3 Server 2008R2 VM's running underneath this host.

1. The host machine has 4 total NIC's connected to it.
2. Each NIC is running at 1Gbps
3. We have 1 NIC dedicated for each VM and 1 NIC is being used for the host

When transferring files between VM's I am not getting anywhere close to 1Gbps in speed even though all 3 VM's are on the same switch and in the same subnet. In fact I get less than 2 - 4Mbps. I don't have any issues when I try to transfer files between the host server and another physical server on the same subnet and on the same switch.

I have made sure that VMQ is enabled on the Host and Virtual NIC's. I also disabled Priority and VLAN tagging. The Host machine is a HP DL380 G8 with the latest NIC drivers installed so I don't think that's the problem.

Any help with this issue will be much appreciated.

USB Pass-Through From Windows 8.1 Host To Windows Server 2012 R2 VM

I want to be able to connect with a Windows Mobile Device through Windows Mobile Device Center, within a Virtual Machine.  When connecting through the Hyper-V Manager and through Remote Desktop, under "Other supported RemoteFX USB devices", I can see the Symbol USB Sync Cradle.  In the VM, in Device Manager, I don't see a USB connection.  In the VM, I don't see any meaningful errors in the Event Viewer.

Host:  Windows 8.1 Enterprise Hyper-V on a Domain.  Upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro.  When this computer was originally installed with Windows 8 Pro, Hyper-V was enabled.  I removed Hyper-V, and installed VMWare Player, because I wanted USB Pass-through.  I then uninstalled VMWare and installed VirtualBox.  Recently, I uninstalled VirtualBox, upgraded to Windows 8.1 Enterprise, and enabled Hyper-V.

Virtual Machine OS: Windows Server 2012 R2 on a Workgroup.  Started out with being a VMWare VM, using VMWare Player.  Moved to VirtualBox.  USB Pass-through was working in both those virtual environments.  Used Disk2VHD to convert the VM to a VHDX file.

On the Host:

  1. Windows Mobile Device Center is connected to a Motorola Windows Mobile Device (MC959X) sitting in a Symbol USB Cradle.  The OS on the scanner is Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 Classic CE OS 5.2.29217 (Build 29217.5.3.12.26).  Advanced Networking (USB to PC) is not enabled.
  2. Enabled RemoteFX.
  3. In the RDP file, and in the Registry, added the GUID's for:
  • WPD "{eec5ad98-8080-425f-922a-dabf3de3f69a}";
  • Windows Mobile "{6AC27878-A6FA-4155-BA85-F98F491D4F33}";
  • USB Device "{88BAE032-5A81-49f0-BC3D-A4FF138216D6}";
  • Windows CE USB Device "{25dbce51-6c8f-4a72-8a6d-b54c2b4fc835}";
  • GUID_DEVINTERFACE_USB_DEVICE "{A5DCBF10-6530-11D2-901F-00C04FB951ED}"

Ran "sfc /scannow"

All Microsoft Updates are current.

What am I missing?

Hyper-V 2012 general administration and configuration questions

$

My company is moving heavily into virtualization.  We have about 50 HW servers and 2 HyperV 2008 single hosts.  I just built a pretty beefy Hyper-V 2012 clustered server and connected it to a brand new SAN.

I've read several articles before building the system to ensure that i follow those best practices, like this one.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/askpfeplat/archive/2013/03/10/windows-server-2012-hyper-v-best-practices-in-easy-checklist-form.aspx

The new system is running great.  It has a dedicated NIC for live migrations, which has been tested.

My questions are really about resource usage.  Determining how many virtual machines to put on one physical NIC, and how many virtual processors to give a virtual machine.  I found an article that described mathematically what my limits are for a single virtual server.  My server has 24 cores with 48 logical processors and 512 GB RAM.

What i'm not sure of is how many virtual processors I should give a machine.  What I'm doing currently is starting small and just visually rating performance.  If the machine seems slow i turn it off and give it two more processors.  Does this sound like a good method?

Also, does anyone know how processor affinity work for HyperV.  I would assume that HyperV balances threads across all cores.  Or does it load up cores first them move to others.

Then there are the physical NICS.  The back end ISCSI nics for the SAn are 10G and isolated and HyperV isn't allowed to use them.  The front end NICS for the virtual servers are 1G.  I'm watching them for load, but they seem to be no where near saturated.  How many virts should I put on a single NIC?  Is it just based on saturation or are there other considerations?

Thanks,

I was exporting several VM's from a Vhost so that i could import them into a new cluster. Four out of the five machines went off with no hitch and were exported and then imported.  However one of the machines throws up an error durring the export

"An error occurred while attempting to export the virtual machine.
Filed to copy file during export.
Failed to copy file from 'D:\path\of\vhd\VM.vhd to 'D:\path\of\export\VM.vhd': The file esists (0x80070050)"

Slow IDE Performance

Hi, I have approx 800 virtual machines, on a FailoverCluster, connected using FC to a Compellent SAN (50% SAS, 50% SATA). some Windows 2003 R2, some Windows 2008, some Windows 2008 R2, some Windows 2012 and some Windows 2012 R2.

I tried VMs on both Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2.

When I copy a file over an IDE disk, I never go over 90 MB/s. 100 MB/s when copying from the network to the Drive.

When I copy a file over a SCSI disk, I copy between 350 MB/s and 450 MB/s.

If I start a copy over an IDE disk, and, at the same time, I start a copy over a SCSI disk, the copy speed on the IDE drop between 50 MB/s and 75 MB/s, and the SCSI disk copy at 350 MB/s+. Then speed come back on the IDE when the SCSI is over.

If I start two copy on two different IDE disks, the first copy will hang for a couple second when the second copy starts, and I won't go over 70 MB/s on each disk.

The 3 disks are Fixed, and on the same CSV (same LUN). When doing file copy on the HOST, I have the same performance as the SCSI VHDx.

When I create Gen 2 VMs (100% SCSI), they are incredibly more responsive than the Gen 1 (IDE).

How can I fix the IDE performance? Thanks!

Hi,

What is the best practice for formatting CSV LUN for hosting Exchange/SQL Server VM?

Can the CSV be formatting with 64K allocation size unit and VM OS VHD with 4K, SQL/Exchange Data VHD with 64K?

Hi all,

I have an hyper-v install with a dell T320 server with two ethernet cards from Broadcom and Windows Server 2012 R2 as hyper-v server.

I have one VM with 2012 R2 and one another host with 2012 Std. All the systems are working fine since we make the install.

Since this morning I see that the 2012 Std server is not able to connect to the network.

I shutdown all VMs, delete the Vswitch, delete the physical network card, restart the host, recreate a new vswitch and reconnect the VMs to it. I access the network on 2012 R2 but in 2012 Std the OS see no network card.

What can I do.

Need Help, VLAN cant communicate with Router

Good Morning everyone,

I have a Lab environnement in my Physical Computer win 8.1 that has Hyper-V on it.

Inside Hyper-V I have a win server 2012 R2 that is a DC, I also have a VM win win XP that Im trying to configure a VLAN on it and the point is that DC should server clients IP based on wich vSwitch they are connected.

I have no psysical switch layer 2, but my NIC supports VLN tagging also my router.

In the DC I ran a cmdlet on Powershell to trunk the virtual switch, it is DC01 - Network Adapter - Trunk - 0, 1-10

and the VM is also in Trunk, WINXP - Network Adapter - Trunk - 2,0

DC and VM are connected to the external virtual switch because I would like to have Internet on VM WINXP.

On the DC everything is ok, I have Internet Connection and I can ping the VM, but on the VM I can ping the DC but I havent Internet Connection, because I cant ping the Default Gateway.

Anyone could help me ? or give me some advices ?

Thank you very much

Windows 2012 VM Losing Connectivity

$

I have a couple of VMs that lose network connectivity periodically. I can ping a problem VM and about 50% of the time it will not reply back. All the VMs are on the same subnet as my workstation. All the drivers have been updated on the hosts. I have other VMs that are attached to the same virtual switch and they don't have an issue. I have created a virtual switch from a nic that is not being used by anything else and still have the same results.

Any ideas.

VHD/VHDX recovery method

Hi,

What is the best way to repair a corrupt VHD/VHDX file? Is there a correct process to go through and if the tools by Microsoft don't work, what other 3rd party tools do you guys recommend?

Thanks

ODX on Dell MD 3XXX Storage will corrupt the VHDX

$

I have found that the latest version of the Dell MD Storage has ODX on by default. When using the storage migration with this turned on the VHDX files transfer instantly between the LUN's but the VHDX is corrupt and causes the Virtual Server to blue screen and then to never boot again.  I have yet to find a way to recover any data.

My current work around is to disable ODX on the array itself which means that the data is transferred by the hosts, but does not corrupt the VHDX files.

show storageArray odxsetting;

set storageArray odxEnabled=false;

As the Subject states. I'm looking for the best method to convert a large number of VM's from multiple VMware ESX 5.5 hosts to multiple Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts. converting multiple VM's simultaneously would be ideal. Do you suggest VMM, Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter 2.0, Migration Automation Toolkit, Orchestrator, other???

Thanks!

I have installed server 2012 r2 & enabled hyper-v to provide vps. If i have added 2 Iscsi controllers for 2 vhd in vps and for & every vps i have do the same then will it create load on host or vps during working hours. the purpose behind keeping 2 controllers on vps which 2 hdd  to add more space without shutting down the vps. as iscsi can give us to hot add extra space.

the storage where the virtual hard disk is located does not support virtual disk sharing

Hi everyone,

I deployed 2 hyper v vitual machines a while ago, and i did that because I needed to test my current game Project, which is an

online game. However, i've had some problems with my Windows installation then I had to reset the pc by making it a refresh

install. I still have the hyper v virtual disks, but i cannot attach it to a new hyper-v virtual machine. it pops up this message:

"the storage

where the virtual hard disk is located does not support virtual disk sharing". I dont know anything about virtual machines, so I

didnt know I had to make the disk sharable. How can I force to attach the hard disk to a new hyper-v? I dont want to go t

hrough the whole proccess of installing the operating system all over again and updating it....

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Hyper V DCs

Hi,

Ive been running my lab on 2 hosts with local storage (2012 R2). Recently ive purchased an additional server and setup an SMB 3 (Server 2012 R2) share for my VMs.

I switch my hosts and SMB Server off at night (as its only a lab). When I boot the next morning, I cannot connect to anything and my VMs are in a "saved-critical" state. The only way I can get things moving again is to

1. Delete my DC
2. Copy the files to a local drive
3. import the VM back into the host
4. Migrate the storage back to the SMB 3 share

The above works but is a bit of a pain. Anyone got any suggestions as to what I can do? Im guessing im in a bit of a chicken and egg situation as I must need the DC to validate the permissions for the share?
