Hi,

I am new to hyper-V and trying to make centos 7 work with hyper-V server 2012 R2.
I have already done sriov bios settings on hyper-v and iovsupportreasons displays ok.

IovSupport                                : True
IovSupportReasons                         : {OK}

Then I created an external switch and that too says iovsupportreasons: ok. But iovvirtualfunctionsinuse shows 0 even though I have created a vm network adapter sriov enabled and assigned to it.

Reboot guest - receive new nic

(This isn't a citrix issue.. it's HyperV - I think - but Citrix background below just for info. The HyperV part seems to be killing me here. This incident relates to )

A slight problem has resurfaced during Citrix provisioned image update. The citrix side of is it kinda academic, the reason it's being a pain is in the image, the virtual machines have two NICs, one to boot off of (a legacy adapter), and one for citrix ICA traffic (synthetic).

This has always worked great, ICA is bound to the right one and job done. All the VMs boot off the same provisioned image and we're off to the races.

Today I updated the citrix image - when I boot *some* VMs, it decides the synthetic adapter has somehow changed, and installs a new one. Which ICA doesn't bind to as it's not there at boot time, instead it attempts to bind to the non-routable boot nic and of course clients then can't connect.

I'm at a total loss to explain how the guest has decided it has a new NIC in there. If I show hidden devices, I can see the old one of course, but the fact it's not there until the device has been installed is causing me a problem.

For fun, I booted the server I was using back on the old image, the one that had worked perfectly well - and it pulled a new NIC instance, just as the new image did. This leads me to suspect something is up with the host as of course the October image hasn't changed, but I can't figure out what. Making matters worse, there are 5 servers running on that host, all on the same image - and the one I rebooted is the one showing this behaviour. The others are fine. As these are provisioned images, they ALL boot off the same one, and any changes are discarded upon reboot.

Any ideas? Host is 2008R2 datacentre, guests are 2008R2x64 standard.

Thanks

AW

Bit of background - we've a Citrix XenApp 6 farm which provides desktops and apps to thin client devices. There's around a dozen physical hosts, running in the region of 45 VMs that the clients in turn to connect to. We've two base images (using Citrix provisioned image) that are updated monthly and all guests boot off one of those.

WS2012R2.

As shown by the screen shot tools like "Get-VMIntegrationService" do not find the running VM. Is there a way to see why its showing fine in the "HyperV Manager" but its not found by the cmdline tools?

Dynamic Memory is not working all the time

$

We are in the process off moving our 2008R2 VM's from the 2008R2 HyperV servers to new Server 2012R2 Hosts.

We shut down the VM's copy the files and VHD's to the new CSV's en import the VM in the Hyperv Manager. Then we make them high available in the Failover Cluster Manager (Configure role - Virtual machine). We mount the integration tools and update the VM to version 6.3.9600.16384

For a specific type of VM (mostly RDS Host servers) we always had Dynamic Memory configured (when they were hosted on de 2008R2 platform), so we are using the same settings on the 2012r2 platform. The memory settings were;

Startup memory: 1024 MB

Minimum memory: 1024 MB

Maximum memory: 12288 MB

These VM's reboot every morning, this is done for specific reasons. But now once in a while (once per week/2 weeks) we notice that the VM's are not using more memory then 1024 MB while the demand is much higher. Rebooting the server helps most of the times, live migrating to another host also helps. In the VM we see that memory usage in the taskmanager is 99-100%, and after the move it immediately starts using more than the minimum configured amount.

Until the failover the memory usage was 1024 MB and it did not get any higher.

This happened several times. Last week we changed the Memory configuration to:

Startup memory : 2048 MB

Minimum memory: 2048 MB

Maximum memory: 12288 MB

But this morning we had a call about the performance of one of the VM's, We saw that it was only using 2 GB memory while the demand was much higher. After live migrating it to another host it started using more memory immediately.

The 2012R2 hosts are not overcommited, there is a lot of memory still available for the VM's. Those VM's never had this problem on the 2008R2 Hyperv platform.

Any idea why this happens?

Monitor bandwidth utilization for Hyper-V's Virtual Machines

Hi,

I'm wondering, if SCOM is capable to monitor incoming & outgoing traffic (current and total over time) of VMs in Hyper-V?

Tried to search about it, and found only 3rd party tools or the monitoring is only available for Router, not VMs.

Thanks.

No Sound on virtual Windows 2008 R2 terminal servers

Hello. I have a hyper-v server with 3 terminal servers (in fact there are two hyper-v with a totall of 6 terminal servers).

Hyper-V server is W2K8R2 and so are the terminal servers.

Users connect to the terminal servers using RDP and are unable to play sounds locally on their thin and fat clients.

I installed Desktop Experience and offcourse done the steps below.

Win2008
  1. Start -> Run -> services.msc
  2. Change the Windows Audio service from 'Disabled' to 'Automatic' - and start it.
  3. Lauch the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration utility by going to START -> RUN/SEARCH -> and typing entering the following command: tsconfig.msc <ENTER>
  4. On the right-hand pane, double click on 'RDP-TCP'
  5. Select the 'Client Settings' tab
  6. Clear/Uncheck the Audio and video playback check box
  7. Log off the system and launch your RDP client.
  8. Before you connect to the system, click the Options button/arrow to expand the RDP session options.
  9. Click the ‘Local Resources Tab’ and under ‘Remote audio’ click the ‘Settings’ button.
  10. On the window that pops-up, under ‘Remote audio playback’ click ‘Play on this computer’ and click OK.
  11. Connect to the virtual machine and you now have sound!
  12. (quick test, you can use START -> RUN -> c:\windows\media\tada.wav  (it may prompt you to configure Media Player for first usage).

After this, the users are still unable to play audio in their terminal session.

They have boxes or headphones connected to their devices and are able to play audio local on their fat clients. (Windows pc's)

Does anyone has more idea's?

2012 R2 RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter Greyed Out

$

I am running a home Server with 2012 R2 with the Hyper-V role installed, with about 5 Windows 8.1 VM's.  I'm trying to get RemoteFX working, here's my hardware config:

  • E5-4610 Processor (Supports Slat)
  • Nvidia GTX 770 (Driver supports WDDM 1.3 with direct X 11)
  • Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5 (All bios virtual settings enabled)

When I install the Video card driver (tried different versions using windows 8 and windows 8.1 drivers) initially it shows me the checkbox to "Use this GPU with RemoteFX" However after a reboot it says no supported video cards are available.

Before the reboot after installing the driver when it shows the GPU is capable of remote FX, I am not able to add a RemoteFX 3d adapter to a virtual machine because it is greyed out.

After I reboot, if i uninstall and re-install the driver the GTX 770 is available to use again but I still cannot add the RemoteFX adapter to a virtual machine's hardware.

I have done the following:

  1. Verified in DXdiags that the direct X version is 11
  2. Verified in DXdiags that the driver model is WDDM 1.3
  3. Verified the E5-4610 Proc supports Slat or Extended Page Tables
  4. Enabled all the Virtualiztion VT-x settings in the Bios
  5. Verified the video card is supported and certified in 2012 R2
  6. Verified the Remote Desktop Virtualization Host Agent is started in Services.msc
  7. Tried the newest and oldest video drivers for 8.1, and newest for windows 8
  8. I am using Generation 1 vm's as i heard Generation 2 is having problems with RemoteFX
  9. Tried Generatino 2 VM's, there is no option to add RemoteFX hardware
  10. Tried a different GTX 550Ti video card, same issue
  11. Performed all Windows updates for server 2012 R2

Please advise on the next steps to be taken to get RemoteFX working, or if any of the hardware I mentioned above does not support RemoteFX in 2012 R2.

Thanks.

A solution to no network access in guest OS

$

Hi.

Host OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 / Hyper-V
Guest OS: Windows Server 2008 R2

Had a problem with "no network access" in guest OS.
However, as many others could not get rid of the Virtual Network card in Device Manager (which also seems to manage the LAN Connection object under Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings)

After a few hours this seems something like what you need to do to get rid of the faulting Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter ... so the Guest OS can automatically reinstall it. These steps worked for me:

Probable Prerequisites:

0)
- The host OS runs the Virtual Network Switch on one of the physical network adapters or on the same adapter (if there is only one). In my case I run on the 2nd physical adapter.
- Hyper-V Virtual Network manager has a virtual network on one of those adapters.
- The VM with the guest OS is bound to the virtual network

1) Event log > System probably has an event saying something is wrong with the Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter and you need to reinstall it (but how!!!)

Fix Guest OS LAN Connection:

1.a) Hyper-V Manager Actions:

Hyper-V Manager > Shutdown or turn off the Guest OS in

Hyper-V Manager > VM Guest OS > Settings > Network Adapter remove

1.b) Hyper-V Manager VM GUest OS States:

{ No network adapter available for guest OS }

2.a) Hyper-V Manager Actions:

Hyper-V Manager > VM > Start VM Guest OS

2.b) Guest OS States:

{ DM > Virutal network card and Network and Sharing Center > Connection LAN is strangely still available even though the virtual network adapter hardware was removed in step 1 }

3.a) Guest OS Actions:

Go to Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings > "LAN Connection" object > Properties

Click every protocol etc. and click the uninstall button

3.b) Guest OS States:

{ The LAN Connection object is gone under Network and Sharing Center }

{ The Network card is gone under Computer Administration > Device Manager }

4.a) Guest OS Actions:

cmd > Run as Administrator >

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

devmgmt

In device manager goto the network node and uninstall all references to Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter

(In my case I used the guest os for a Windows Backup sysrecovery because of changes in the disk layout thus I also had some additional references now visible to the previous physical network adapters and uninstalled them as well)

4.b) Guest OS states:

{ Device Manager > Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter not present }

5.a) Hyper-V Manager Actions

Shutdown VM Guest OS

VM Guest OS > Settings > Add Virtual network adapter for external network

Start VM Guest OS

5.b) Guest OS States:

{ Guest OS ready for plug and play installation of Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter }

{ Device Manager > Network Adapters > Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter is installed and activated }

{ Network and Sharing Center > Connection LAN object is installed and activated }

{ LAN is connected with network access through the Virtual Network switch in the Host OS }

Event ID 58 - Disk signature error only while backup job

$

Hi,

Host 2012R2 with Hyper-V-role, Backups are done with DPM 2012R2.

While job is working, three warnings are recorded in event-log of the guest:

partmgr / Event ID 58 / The disk signature of disk 2 is equal to the disk signature of disk 1.

partmgr / Event ID 58 / The disk signature of disk 2 is equal to the disk signature of disk 1.

partmgr / Event ID 58 / The disk signature of disk 3 is equal to the disk signature of disk 0.

This happens in all guests (with different disk numbers). No corresponding error on Host or DPM. Registry of each guest is growing in these keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2

The popular hint "attach the VHDs, bring them on- and offline, detach" brings no solution. As Mike Jacquet from Microsoft told in this thread, it is a problem of Hyper-V and not DPM.

Has anyone a solution for this? Thanks!

DPM2012 R2 protecting Hyper-V 2012 R2 Cluster VMs, some appear offline in DPM

Hello,

We have 2 separate Hyper-V 2012 R2 Clusters using iSCSI SAN CSVs as storage.For these I have set up 2 PSGs for VM backups using checkpoints (As new in DPM 2012R2/Hyper.V 2012 R2)

90% of the VM backups work in online mode but some shows as Offline when running the DPMGuide to add a VM to a PSG.The server OS versions differs between WS2003 R2 SP2/WS2008 SP2 / WS2008 R2 SP1 / WS 2012. Windows Server Backup is installed on all VMs and vssadmin list writers shows no errors.How can I elaborate and solve this issue?

Thx /Tony

Both host and guest need to have the same IP

I have an remote dedicated Windows 2008 R2 server with hyper-v on it.

Server is used for running game servers, teamspeak server etc. And I need to run one of those servers on a linux distribution, hence why I need hyper-v, but also I need to keep some of them on a windows server.

Question: How to set up the host (win2008R2) and guest(linux) to have the same IP, since I have only one IP from the provider.

Use Hyper-V Replica Seeed for Shared Nothing Migration

$

Assuming two 2012 R2 Hyper-V nodes (not clustered). You have Hyper-V Replica configured on each of the VMs for DR purposes.

During maintenance  you want to use Shared Nothing Migrations to prevent shutting down the VMs. Can Shared Nothing Migration use the Hyper-V replica seed? Meaning the data that has already been replicated?

Or when you initiate a shared nothing migration, does it copy the VM/data all over again resulting in 2 copies of the data (Hyper-V Replica and the Shared Nothing Migration VM copy).
