What would be the best NIC Teaming configuration for Host with 4 Nics and 2 Hyper-v VMs on it.

Can anyone help me with this scenario.

I got a new HP server  with 4 Nics on it. I installed Windows 2012 R2 and my plan is to set it up as a Host with Hyper-V and to  create 2  VMs in it from scratch. One is going to be a domain controller and the other one a File Server.

The domain controller is pretty small 100 GB and only 50 users will be authenticating on it but the File Server is 1 TB and the same users will be pulling the data from it.

The switch is a TP-Link 10GbE Unmanaged Switch:

What would be the best NIC Teaming configuration for speed in this scenario? Without buying any more hardware.

At the End of the day backup exec 2014 will be backing up the Host with the 2 Vms on it.

Thanks

Hid.

Create Hyper-V Virtual Machines with Windows PowerShell searching on hostname

$

Dear,

I’m a starter with PowerShell scripting an I’m looking for a script to create Hyper-V Virtual Machines with Windows PowerShell. The idea behind the script is that when I run the script its first searching for the hostname. I’m migrating 24 locations and each location have a different hostname like xxx-SRV001. The script needs to use the first 3 signs from the hostname in this case “xxx” and create 2 VM's with below info:

Virtual Machine 1 2048MB
Virtual Machine 2 4096MB

Location D:\VM\

I can create VM's with Powershell into Hyper-V so only a script to first searching for the first 3 characters of the hostname is enough.

Example:
It's the intention that when the script runs it's looking for the hostname. As example we have hostname 000-SRV001
If the script see the first 3 characters of the hostname, in this case 000 he need to create 2 VMs with name xxx-SRV002 and xxx-SRV004

I think it must be something with
$hostname = "Get-WmiObject -computername $Machine Win32_Computersystem"

But then when i'm asking for $hostname he must give me back the hostname and if the hostname is 1 of the 24 locations then he need to create 2 vm's in Hyper-V with above info.

Can you help me or do you have a script for this?

Hyper-V in Windows 8.. VM cannot get DHCP IP address

I had Both Virtual Box and Hyper-V on the same machine, I decided trying to shut down Hyper-V all the time was too much trouble so I removed VirtualBox.

Since then no machine can get a local IP address from the router.

I have even setup the virtual connections again:

I have various CentOS installs which I installed with generation 1.

I even tried changing the LAN Adapter to a "Legacy" one, but it still fails.

Any advice as to what is going on with this?

Thanks

Integration Services for Windows XP SP3 clients on Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V host not working for some XP VMs

I recently created a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V host and then migrated several machines (using VMM 2012) from a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V host.

The Windows 7 machines are working fine, integration-wise, but some of the Windows XP SP3 machines cannot get integration services working.  A couple of the Windows XP machines integration services are working fine.  I don't see anything obvious which would be causing the discrepancy.

On the machines that it is not working, I have tried:

uninstalling the services, rebooting, and reinstalling the windows 2012 r2 vmguest.iso image files
uninstalling the services, rebooting, and reinstalling the windows 2008 r2 vmguest.iso image files

Suggestions?

Unable to shrink VHDX - Not enough disc space?

$

Hi!

Im hope that i'm posting this in the correct forum/subforum.

The thing is that im running several server 2012 hyper-v guests on a server 2012 host machine.
During the night the host ran out of disc space and all the servers where paused, causing a complete stand still for the company. To free up some space for the host, i want to shrink a fixed size vhdx disc for one of the guests.

When i go to Disc Manager and click Shrink, it says that i can shrink 100471 Gb. However, when i press OK, i get an error message saying "There is not enough free space on the disc or discs to complete the task".. or similar. I get the message in Swedish on the server. Instead of shrinking 100 Gb, iäve tried to shrink only 70 Gb, 60 Gb, 40 Gb and 10 Gb, but every time i get this message. I've ran Check disk as well, but it found no errors.

I'm puzzled by this since i have free space both on the host and the disc i'm trying to shrink.
Free space has been created on the host by shutting down some of the other guest servers.

Any ideas?
As of now i can't have all needed servers running, since the all disk space for the host is consumed and the guests can be paused dut to lack of disk space any second.

Thanks,

Daniel

VMs per Windows Server 2012 Std License?

Hello All,

Can anybody help me please? I have a question in Windows Server 2012 Std License.

1. If I have 2 Windows 2012 STD Licenses ( 2 CPUs) howmany VMs ( Windows 2012 Server OS installed) can I have on the same Physical Server?

2. Can we assign more than 1 license to a host?

3. If the limit is 4 VMs( 4 Windows server 2012 Std VMs) can we have more/other VMs ( like Linux) in-addition to 4 eligible VMs?

Thanks in advance,

Sudhir

Intermittent problem with the TEAMed NICs

$

I am having an intermittent problem with the TEAMed NICs losing their network connectivity.

But first, here’s some details about my environment.  I have a four node Hyper-V Cluster running Windows Server 2012 R2.  The servers are Dell R720 with two Broadcom Quad 1Gig Ports (B5720 and B5719).  This gives each one of my servers a total of eight 1Gb ports.  With this, I’ve setup 2 network Teams.  Here’s how I’ve got my 8 NICs setup:

  • I’ve created a TEAM with Port1 on the B5720 and Port1 on the B5719.  These two TEAMed NICs are plugged into Cisco Switch ports that have been assigned to my “SERVER Network” (the VLAN where all my servers can communicate with each other).  This TEAM is used for regular server to server communications and access to AD.  We will call this team “SERVER_TEAM”
  • I’ve also created a second TEAM with Port2 on the B5720 and Port2 on the B5719.  These two TEAMed NICs are plugged into Cisco switch ports that are configured as trunks, with various VLANs tied to them.  I’ve then created a Virtual Switch in Hyper-V using this TEAM.  We will call this team “vSWITCH_TEAM”
  • The remaining 4 ports have been left as individual NICs.  One for LiveMigration, one for internal cluster communication, and two for SMB traffic.

Both teams have been configured as follows:

  • Teaming mode = Switch Independent
  • Load balancing mode = Dynamic
  • Standby adapter = None (all adapters Active)

Problem Description
Every once in a while, the VMs on one node, will all simultaneously lose their network connection.  And right away, the phone starts to ring off the hook, as our users can no longer access the services supplied by the affected VMs.  LiveMigrating the VMs to another host, will restore the VMs network connections.

I’ve tried moving a non-critical VM back to the problem host, and as expected, that VM lost network connection.  If I reboot the host, then everything is fine again, and I can move VMs back onto that host and they continue to talk to the network perfectly.  I’ve also found out, that instead of rebooting the host, I could unplug the network cables being used by the virtual switch team, and then plug them back in, and that also fixes the problem.  This is a reoccurring issue that has occurred on more than one of my hosts, therefore, it’s not a hardware problem with one of the servers.
When the problem is occurring, our “Cisco Guy” says that he sees a whole lot of ‘dropped packets’ on one of the interfaces in the team.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?  These Hyper-V hosts are bran new, fully patched, with the latest Broadcom NIC drivers installed.

Moving VMs from Standalone Hyper-V to Hyper-v Failover Cluster

Hello All.................I need to move Virtual Machines from Standalone Hyper-V based on Windows Server 2012 R2 to a Hyper-V Failover Cluster based on Windows Server 2012 R2.

-  The VMs OS is Windows Server 2012 R2

-  Applications installed on VMs are SCCM, SCOM, SharePoint, etc.

1.  I am looking for a Checklist that I can run through and move them.  To make sure I do not miss out anything.

2.  Would a downtime be required in this scenario while the VM is being moved?

3.  What requires special attention in this scenario?

Hyper-V guest remains in Saved state after Host reboots regardless of Automatic Start Action settings

Hyper-V guest (2008 R2) remains in Saved state after Host (2012 R2) reboots regardless of the Guest's Automatic Start Action settings.  The Guest is set to "Always start this virtual machine automatically" but remains in a saved state after the host reboots.  There is another Guest (2012 R2) that starts without issue.  I have adjusted the Startup delay of both VM's without any affect.

Looking for Storage Configuration Input

I'm looking for opinions on how to best setup storage for my Hyper-V lab.

Currently I have a 2 node Hyper-V Cluster (Server 2012 R2). There is a Server 2012 R2 shared storage server for the VM's. For storage I have 2x500GB SSD's and 2x1.5TB HDD's.

Recently I changed the 2x1.5TB to a RAID 0 to see if performance would be better. While on paper the performance is better, I'm not so sure it's translating too good for the VM's to be all on the same volume. I have 4-5 VM's on that volume.

The SSD's are each holding about 4-5 VM's.

Is this the ideal storage layout or would I benefit from putting the SSD's into a RAID 0 as well?

All the VM's are regularly backed up, so I'm not to worry about redundancy on storage drives.

Windows Server 2012 r2 Hyper-v 2 External Switches

I wish I could have a setup as the following:

  1. I have Windows Server 2012 R2
  2. I have Two NICs: First one is connected to the LAN and the second one connected to the Internet
  3. I have Created two external virtual switches: First one for the LAN NIC and the second one for the Interne NIC
  4. I have create one virtual machine and promoted it to domain controller with DHCP working properly. This virtual machine has the LAN external switch.

When I create another Virtual Machine using the second external switch I got connected to the internet inside this second virtual machine.

When I add one more adapter to the second virtual machine from the LAN switch. I can not access the internet from that machine.

My question is:

How to access the internet in a virtual machine that has two adapters one from external switch to the LAN and the other with external switch to the Internet?

Moving Physical SQL Cluster into Virtual SQL Cluster based on Hyper-V Failover

Hello All............I have a SQL Cluster based on Physical Hardware that has Three-3 instances as well. I have setup a Hyper-V Failover Cluster (2012 R2) and have built Virtual/Guest SQL Cluster (2012 R2) upon it.  Now, I intend to move the instances/databases from Physical SQL Cluster to Virtual SQL Cluster.

1.  Is this supported?  If so, I would appreciate any guidance on it?

2.  Is P2V of SQL Cluster supported in Hyper-V Failover Cluster based on Windows Server 2012 R2?

Hyper-V Manager broke on new install.

I have hundreds of Citrix and Vmware servers. Decided to give Microsoft a try and was going to Migrate to them. Got a Server and installed Hyper-V On it. I did NOT join it to a domain. I completely patched it and all went well. Got a second server and installed Server 2012 R2 Standard. Fully patched it. Went into Hyper-V Manager and tried to connect to the Server and got a MMC error. It gives two options. Report to Microsoft and close or ignore error. When I ignore it gives me the following error, "FX:(922180d7-b74e-45f6-8c74-4b560cc100a5) Type"Microsoft.Virtualization.Client.Common.VirtualizationException' in assembly etc...and says SecurityKeyToken is not marked as serializable. Then at bottom it says Exception Type: System.Runtime.Serialization.SerializationException and has three Exception stack trace:....If I hit ok it closes.

I also formatted the server and installed Server 2012 R2 Standard and did NOT do any patches and I get the same thing. Neither server is joined to a domain. Both are workgroup with static IP's.

How to Restrict Resources to different Groups?

I have a Hyper-V 2012 R2 lab environment. I need 2 allocate resources to different groups. For example, how can I allocate 60% of hyper-v resources (compute and storage) to group A and 40% to group B. How do I accomplish this?

Live Migration between AD Forests

Hyper-V teaming cannot failover

$

I have created two NIC teaming, one for a 147 subnet and one for a 192 subnet,

27 11 2014 16 43 05

And used these two teaming in a Hyper-V virtual switch

27 11 2014 16 47 16

But when I disable one of the NIC in the 147 team, some VM will loss connection,

27 11 2014 16 49 32

27 11 2014 16 48 59

It seems to me that the VM originally using the disabled NIC cannot failover to the remaining active NIC.

Anyone have any idea about what might be wrong? Thank you very much.
