Dedicated CSV Network and Single iSCSI 10 GB Link?

$

I just need some information on including a CSV dedicated Network or if that is over kill?  Designing a 2012 R2 environment with 4 blades for host.  On the back end we have two modules for redundancies that give us 8 usable NICs.  That are then routed through two redundant switches.  All 10 GB to the switch, etc.....

  • Management Network
  • VM Network (Client Data)
  • CSV Network
  • Live Migration Network
  • Cluster Heartbeat Network
  • iSCSI (SAN)
  • Backup Network

Question for all my Hyper-V peers is this, I understand the reasoning behind the CSV Network.  Allowing data to move between the four host if one of the SAN networks goes down.  However, is it really needed?  If we use it I plan to just use the Live Migration Network as the CSV Network.

So, what do you think?  Should I keep the CSV Network and just combine it with the Live Migration Network and then make sure that network card is set to the lowest priority?

One more question.  Our current design gives us a 10 GB iSCSI connection.  Again on the back plane it is redundant and connected to redundant switches.  The only problem I see I will have is since the Host sees only one network that I will get warnings that I don't have redundancy?  So I should need to worry about MPIO and just ignore the warnings?

Teaming options with Windows 2012 R2 Host for HV Guests

Hi

We are configuring Windows 2012 R2 standard host servers for Win 2008 / Win 2012 Guest servers. We have 3 NICs and using one for host management and other two in windows teaming. We read many blogs and supported configurations, but still not clear about the options with teaming.  Usually with teaming we select the default options such as Switch Independent Teaming mode, Dynamic Load Balancing mode with no standby adapter. Recently with this teaming configuration we faced issues with host servers on multiple Windows 2012 R2 standard host servers (the guest hang multiple times) and when we removed one of the NICs from team it started working fine. With the switches we didn't find any issues nor with NICs. Is it because of the default team options? Should we go with Hyper V port Load balancing mode?

Expect support from you guys. Thanks in advance

SCVMM Virtual Switch Provisioning ignores "Inherit settings from the physical management adapter" setting

$

When provisioning a new Hyper-V hosting into SCVMM I have a situation occur that causes loss of management to the server, which really should not be happening. When I add a new host, I set the 'Virtual Switch' adding a new 'Logical Switch' as well as a 'Virtual Network Adapter' for the management OS traffic.

The first NIC in the team is active and configured with correct static IP information, which is allowing VMM access to the server to perform these steps.  The 'Virtual Network Adapter' has a checkbox in the 'This virtual network adapter inherits settings from the physical management adapter.' option box.

From my understanding what should happen is when the virtual adapter is created on the host the IP information should move to the virtual adapter from the physical adapter that is now part of the NIC Team. What is actually happening is the NIC Team seems to create OK, but it picks up a DHCP IP address instead of assuming the first physical NIC's IP information. I tried this with only one NIC as well as both NICs in the team to see what happens. Either case the same problem presents.

To get around this, what I did was sit on the console after I started the provisioning process. As soon as I saw Teamed NIC create I applied the static IP address via PowerShell manually to that Teamed NIC virtual adapter and then VMM just continued along normally. It then moving the IP from the NIC Team adapter to the Hyper-V virtual adapter properly. I did get a warning back from the creation (below) which hints me to the problem.

The Error code details as 2147942465 which is a "Network Access Denied" code followed by "Error while applying physical adapter network settings to teamed adapter". So, this is telling me there was a permission issue of some sort during the step of adding the original physical NIC IP settings to the virtual NIC.

The VMM Run As user 'HVAdmin' is a Local Administrator on the Hyper-V host, this has been verified. It has also been temporarily granted Administrator access on the domain to see if it helps. No go.

Searching around the net has now revealed this problem so far, has anyone else seen this? It makes provisioning a bit of a chore because I have to be at the Hyper-V console and on VMM at the exact same time to add a new host.

Windows 8.1 Pro Crashes When Enabling Hyper-V

So I bought a new HP Envy Desktop specifically for Windows Phone Development and ironically I can't get Hyper-V running. The machine just hangs on startup and eventually Windows 8.1 Pro x64 just crashes after multiple attempts after enabling Hyper-V in Windows Programs/Features.  It's a Intel i5 with 12GB of RAM and virtualization is enabled in the BIOS.  I've read through multiple threads over the last several days and tried the following:

- Updating all local drivers and Windows updates

- Disabling Bluetooth

- Uninstalling Avira AV

- Someone also suggested disabling USB 3.0 support but I don't see an option to do this in my BIOS.

I've wasted a lot of time on this and I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks

Hyper V and Audio and VPN

I had become fascinated with the idea of using a hyper v child instance as my daily use machine, while keeping the actual host spotless a few years back. However the dream quickly became a nightmare when I first tried to set it up.  I bought and returned an entire computers worth of components over the fantasy. For daily use I rely heavily on both: frequent VPN connections (work) and Pandora (maintaining sanity). I connect to the child through the console window and no audio. I connect to the child through RDP and no VPN. I had previously used Virtual PC 2007 and this used to be possible however there is no 64-bit child support. Has there really been no thought toward producing a virtual device with some drivers for the console side of the child hyper v pc? It's been years this has been a lingering issue.  THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT EXIST THAT NEED AUDIO AND VPN CAPABILITY. This is the single largest factor in my recent lack of upgrading.

WinRM query result locale

I am testing the following scenario:

  1. WinRM client is running on a Windows Server 2008 with German locale
  2. Hyper-V (and WinRM service respectively) is running on Windows Server 2012 R2 with English as default locale and German locale installed in addition
  3. Msvm_ComputerSystem instances are enumerated (sample command used: winrm e wmi/root/virtualization/v2/Msvm_ComputerSystem -r:10.10.10.10 -u:administrator -un -encoding:utf-8)

Observed: the returned result contains values that are with English locale - Msvm_ComputerSystem.Caption is equal to "Virtual Machine" (although I can see that the wsman:Locale element is present in the WSMAN request with its xml:lang property set to "de-DE")

Expected: the returned result should contain values that are with German locale - Msvm_ComputerSystem.Caption should be equal to "Virtueller Computer".

Note1: the behavior is inconsistent - I've been able to get result with either German or English locale values.

Note2: when I am getting a result containing values with English locale, I also see that the WSMAN response has the soap:Envelope element with its xml:lang property set to "de-DE".

Below I am providing the SOAP transactions for the following cases: 1) a WSMAN client sends a request with en-US locale; 2) a WSMAN client sends a request with de-DE locale.

Hi,

Instead of taking a snapshot of the Hyper-V Virtual machine can we shutdown the VM and copy the .vhd/.vhdx file to a USB drive as a backup and turn on the VM later.

Thanks

Hi, we have a 3 node hyper-v cluster windows server 2012 R2. They have shared iscsi disks. When I want to create a checkpoint, I get the following:

Error (12700)
VMM cannot complete the host operation on the ams1svw011.wessanen.local server because of the error: Checkpoint operation for 'AMS1SAW029' failed. (Virtual machine ID 8A857DA6-6534-4631-8315-CD14488F79CC)

Recommended Action
Resolve the host issue and then try the operation again.

Slow backup performance when the owner of the VM and CSV are not in the same host

3 hosts in the Hyper-V 2012 cluster and few CSV volumes.

The slow backup performance (around 1xxx MB/min in backup exec) will occure when it meets the following scenario :

1. VM on Node 1 and CSV 1

2. CSV 1 owner is Node 2

When i change the owner of CSV 1 to Node 1, the backup performance will return to normal (over 6000MB/min in Backup exec).

CentOS 7 fast tsc calibration error

Just installed a CentOS 7 VM. Server running 2012 R2 Standard. Getting a fast tsc calibration error with every start up. Otherwise runs fine. Have tried setting clock source to hyperv_clocksource in grub, but error message persists. Apparently this isn't a big issue, according to a number of posts I've read. After the initial error CentOS ends up using hyperv_clocksource, but I'd like to clear out the error message anyhow. Suggestions? Thank you.

Hyper-V 2008R2 - problem with performance

hi,

My users works on virtual terminal services server(2008R2).  Server has four logic processors Dual Xeon and 14Gb memory. There are 45 concurrent users. Hyper-V host is HS22 IBM Blade server - two Xeon E5540, 20GB memory(2008R2 core). We have problem with performance. When user is browsing websites, utilization of TS processors are 100 percent. Server works slowly.  Utilization of host processors are maximum 20%. It look like VM can't uses all resource from host. Is it possible?

the biggest problem we have with internet browser. Othes program doesn't takes all resource.

Where should I start dig to find a source of problem?

Best regards Jacek

General Access Denied Error - Hyper-V

$

Hi

We have a Hyper-V 2012 3 node cluster, the VMs are stored on a Server 2012 based 2 node Scale Out File Server.

We created this setup from new in October 2013 and it has generally worked OK since but we do get the occasional "General Access Denied Error (0x80070005)" when we try to live migrate a virtual machine.  The instructions in the below TechNet article do not work for us - the result indicates success but when we try the Live Migration again we get the same error message.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2249906/en-gb

I have in the past resolved this by removing the virtual machine from Failover Cluster Manager, migrating it via Hyper-V Manager, logging on to the destination Hyper-V host and re-importing it to Failover Cluster Manager from there.

However last night I was doing some system maintenance and went to drain a host via Failover Cluster Manager.  The host had around 20 VMs on it and only two VMs successfully migrated - the other VMs did not migrate and now I cannot move them from that host for love nor money!

The Event Log for FCM indicates they have the "General Access Denied" error.

I have tried the following:

  • Use instructions in above mentioned TechNet article (shows success, but same error happens when I try to Live Migrate)
  • Tried the method I have mentioned above (removing from FCM etc.).  Get the Access Denied message
  • Checking the folder permissions on the "Virtual Machines" folder where XMLs are stored.  Permissions appear OK for all Hyper-V hosts (also checked the VMs VHD permissions)
  • Trying the Live Migration directly on Hyper-V host rather than via a Constrained Delegation scenario
  • Checking Constrained Delegation in AD (seems fine as per when I set it up in October)
  • Checking permissions on the Scale Out File Server

With regards to the Scale Out File Server I have noticed in the past some odd permissions things going on.  I have seen the permissions for the Hyper-V hosts going from (for example) "Full Access" on "This Folder, Subfolders & Files" to random things like " Read/Modify" on "This Folder Only".  Manually changing the permissions back to Full Control resolves the issue, but does not stop it recurring again.

So I'm a bit confused really!  It looks like a mixed basket of permissions issues going on!  Some of our most critical machines are on that host at the moment and they cannot be moved.  Any suggestions appreciated.

Many thanks

2 node Hyper-v CSV cluster performance issue

Hi all,

I have got a problem with a small CSV cluster with Hyper-V.

The VM’s are that are running in the cluster are slow. Disk speeds are about 30-60MB/s read and write.

There is also one VM that runs an application that is using a database, that application is slow too when writing or reading the database.

The data server is the iSCSI target server, the storage is placed into the cluster.

When i copy a 4GB file into c:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\ is goes with a speed of 500-600MB/s, when i copy a file to the UNC path of the dataserver it goes with a speed of 200-220MB/s.

Those speeds are in my opinion fine.

One VM runs on Node2 locally, outside the cluster. The VHDX is stored on the local disk. The HDD speedtest is 500-550MB/s read and 130-150MB/s write.

The setup is as following.

1 data server.
2 nodes.

Server specs are:

Nodes:
Intel Xeon E5-2620 v2
32GB memory
120GB SSD in RAID1
3x 1Gbit NIC (Intel 82574L)

Data server:
Intel Xeon E5-2620 v2
16GB memory
120GB SSD in RAID1
512GB SSD in RAID1 for storage
4x 1Gbit NIC (2x Intel 82574L and 2x Intel I350-T2)

I have tried multiple configurations for the NIC’s.

1 NIC for cluster data.
1 NIC for Hyper-v switch.
1 NIC for iSCSI traffic with own subnet.
I tried also 2 NIC in a teaming for iSCSI traffic with own subnet.

All the setups doesn’t make any difference in the speed.
I also tried to setup the iSCSI target with MPIO. This doesn’t make any difference in the speed.

I hope someone has any suggestions to speed the VM’s up. If someone needs more information, feel free to ask.

Thanks in advance.

Patrick

0x800705AA "insufficient memory "- but that's not true, what is wrong?

Hey guys,

one of our Hyper-V hosts just started to act up, it is a Windows Server 2008 R2 server. Two virtual machines were shut down

by local IT - and they could not get them to start again. And neither can we, unfortunately, we are getting this error:

[Window Title]
Hyper-V Manager

[Main Instruction]
An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine(s).
[Content]
'xxx' failed to start.Unable to allocate 768 MB of RAM: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. (0x800705AA)

[Expanded Information]
'enteotest' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID xxx)
'enteotest' is unable to allocate 768 MB of RAM: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. (0x800705AA). (Virtual machine ID xxx)

The thing is - everything worked fine for months, years even. The host has 64 GB RAM, 25 of which are allocated to VMs via Hyper-V Manager. The task manager shows this:

Total 65516
Cached 1873
Available 30716

There is no Antivirus, there is no "googlecrashhandler". I am clueless. I cannot simply reboot the Host, it's productive. And the machines that are still on all work fine, I really do not want to risk to "lose" more of them.

My searches either brought up topics where "googlecrashhandler" was the cause - or where no sultion was ever presented except for a hotfix for Server 2008 that does not apply here.

Anyone got an idea?!

Windows 2012 Hyper-V Manager says Virtual Machine Status "Backing Up" Why?

What is going on?

I have 4 VMs running on Windows 2012 Datacenter.   They stopped responding so I took a look at Hyper-V Manager.

The status of the VMs say "Backing up".   I cannot shut the VMs down, either.   Well eventually they STOP, but no save or graceful shutdown.

I have not configured backups.   I've never seen this message before.

The VMs DO have Windows Server Backup installed and DO back themselves up using the Scheduler but they back themselves up to a network volume.   Hyper-V Manager should not know anything about this.

How do I get them out of this state?

Boot Failure - Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device -While trying to boot newly created VM from ISO or DVD Drive?

Hello,

I have a new HP DL360eGen8 Server with a fresh install of Windows 2012 Standard running Hyper V.

I am trying to create and boot a new Windows 2008 VM and no matter what I do... Boot from ISO or DVD, I get a boot failure message while trying to create a new VM?

I have other new HP Servers and Dell Servers that I had no problem creating my VM's...

Now with this New HPDL360 I have a problem.  The HP server has all the latest driver updates etc?

I have tried to boot the VM from several different ISO downloads?  And also from the DVD drive directly?  Still the same boot failure error.

This sure is a really strange problem?

Hyper-v cluster issues after adding new nodes

I have a Hyperv cluster consist of 4 nodes with win2k8R2 SP1 on IBM X3650 M3. The cluster is managed by SCVMM 2012 SP1. The CSV is a IBM DS3524 fibre connection through SAN Switch.

I have an individual Hyper-v host installed with the win2k8R2 SP1 on IBM X3650 M4. We decide to add to the cluster. The new node is configured to the same as the cluster node server. The new node failed to add to the cluster. It passed the validation but failed on adding the node to the cluster.

The error stated is:

Error (25334)
Adding host mghyperv04.dtp.local to the cluster 2thqhvfarm01.dtp.local failed because of error An error occurred while performing the operation . Please refer to cluster documentation for resolving cluster problems.

But later I found the new host is member of the cluster through SCVMM and failover cluster manager. But the CSV status for the disk becomes online (redirected access) and causes problems to the VM.

I shutdown the newly added host, and the CSV status returns to online. When I power on the new node again, it takes very long to boot to the windows and when the new node's failover services started, the CSV status for the disk becomes online (redirected access) again.

I check on the disk management on the new nodes, it takes forever to get it load.

And the MPIO for all the nodes have lots of devices added. Previously it only have IBM MPIO devices.

I been scratching my head how to resolve this. Please advise.

Thanks
