Hi ,

as per best practice of Cluster Hyper-v All drives on all nodes should be the same version

But I found network drivers "Microsoft Teredo Tunneling Adapter and Microsoft 6to4 Adapter" are installed one some nodes and not installed on other nodes

IP Ver 6 is enabled on all network drivers

So What should I do and How ?  Install the drivers or uninstall it  and how to do that ?

thanks in advance.

What is your preferred method of remote bare metal hyper-v 2012 server imaging

$

I need to remotely provision (image) 32 Dell 620 servers (they have iDRAC installed), I will have system center 2012. I was thinking PXE boot and place images on the servers. I know I can use the iDRAC to remote boot a virtual ISO file and install the OS that way. I am looking for a better faster and more pre-configured OS way.

I am used to using Shadow Protect (ghost like product) and making and placing 0 and 1 disk images on servers, I would like to continue along that vein. But with added ability to PXE boot and image the server that way. I am looking into clonezilla and want any thoughts of success or failures with server 2012 deployment.

I understand that you can use system center 2012 to deploy images to your bare metal servers (lots of moving parts and looks pretty complicated) and that it will then deploy a VHD image file to your server. I am assuming that means it will boot to the VHD file (hyper-v light) . I have heard this slows down disk read\writes and can cause some issues.

Thoughts with clear instructions please. Only link me to a website if it helps you to not type so much.

Also looking into the DELL KACE server.

Can anyone tell me if I need system center only or if I need Configuration Manager to image servers??

Hyper-v with SAN storage CSV "element not found"

$

Hello!

We are setting a two node Hyper-v Cluster using a EMC VNX5300 storage. The servers are HP DL380p with Brocade 815 Fiber Controllers. The strange thing in this configuration is that the servers are directly attached to the storage and the Brocade controllers are set to use the FC_AL (Arbitrated Loop) instead of P2P (Point to Point Protocol) through the brocade manager (windows app not BIOS) . With the above settings I can successfully add LUNs to servers and use the storage. On the hyper-v side I have the following problem: I have successfully added the quorum and I can switch it between the nodes but when it comes to add a CSV volume I get an error when trying to change the owner node = (Element not found ) and then the CSV enters a failed state. I will appreciate any help with the current configuration!

Thank you in advance!

Windows 8 / Hyper-V / XP Network Connection Installation?

$

I installed Hyper-V in Windows 8 Pro and created a new virtual machine using Windows XP x64. There are a number of threads in different places regarding how to get networking to work within the virtual machine. As per the directions in one thread I created a virtual switch and then in the settings for the virtual machine / add hardware; I added the legacy network adapter and there had been a different network adapter listed which I deleted. When I start the virtual machine it found and tried to install some new hardware which is listed in device manager / other devices as having no driver installed. Looking at the device ID it has VEN_1011&DEV_0009 as a hardware ID.

Two threads talk about "integration components" but the posters don't go into great detail about what they are and where they can be found and they mention that they were working with a beta version of Windows 8 and not the release version.

One thread mentions that I need to install the legacy network adapter or use the legacy drivers for the detected network adapter but when I went to update driver and select driver to install I didn't see an item that said "Legacy Network Adapter". So how do I get the correct driver installed for this so that networking will work properly?

Another question that is somewhat off this topic but perhaps someone can explain, I have LogMeIn installed on the Windows 8 machine in question so that I can do remote support but when I try and use the virtual machine the keyboard is properly captured and sent to the VM but the mouse simply doesn't work inside the VM window. I should mention that when I'm at the site the mouse works fine and it's only when I'm attached via LogMeIn that the mouse doesn't work. Why is this and what can I do to fix it?

VHDX Conversion

$

Hi Everyone,

I've currently got an issue where when trying to convert a dynamic VHDX to a static VHDX, high I/O load on the server is causing other VM's on the host to run quite slow.

I've read somewhere that this is because Hyper-V zero's out the drive space that it is allocating to the new static VHDx.  Is there a way to not do this? It's a pain to cause 5 other VM's slow performance just to convert dynamic to static.

PS. Server runs 10k SAS, 2xXeon CPU, quite a large amount of available RAM.  OS is Server 2k12R2 with Hyper-V Role installed.

Cheers,
Anthony

How to determine the Host a VM runs on, if VM is 2012

Morning all

HyperV host on Win2012 (standard, not R2), guest is the same.

Time was, you could query HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Virtual Machine\Guest\Parameters\PhysicalHostName on a VM to find out the name of the host it was running on, and this is handy for us as we run various scripts to update inventories and such. With a 2012 guest, sometimes that key is no longer populated and for the life of me I can't work out why. The Parameters key is there, but totally empty.

Any thoughts? As you'll know, W2012 has the HyperV integration stuff built in, so it's not like they're out of date or anything. One working and one not-working are both at the same patch levels.

Thanks

Hyper-V Guest VM's disappeared after orderly reboot (Not Virus Scanning Issue)

$

I wanted to perform some long overdue maintenance on a hyper-v host.  My setup is two Win2008 R2 Core Hyper-V machines with local disk storage (no san, no virus protection on the hosts).  I powered down the Guest OS's,  exported them from  Virtual1 and copied the to Virtual2.   The guest OS came up and worked no problem on Virtual2.   Later on in the day I powered down Virtual2.  When virtual2 came back up 2 of the 3 guest VM's have disappeared from the management console.

Some items of note...

  • There is no virus protection running on the hosts (others seem to have been having an issue with virus scanning).
  • Event logs show the orderly shutdown of the guest VM's,  event logs then show only 1 of the machines turning back on.
  • I see no useful errors in the event logs related to starting the machines back up
  • There is a single event log entry for "Hyper-v failed creating a new partition (status 11)".  Although, there is plenty of free RAM & Disk space

Anyone have any idea what's going on?  I'm kind of baffled as where to even begin looking.

Thanks for any help,

-eric

Smart Paging File Location and Gust server loading

$

Hi

We configured virtual servers with fixed memory size, say 25 GB. While starting the machine we are getting error  "Could not initialize memory: There is not enough space on the disk". So we changed the location of Smart Paging File, still got the same error, finally changed the current configuration and checkpoint location to another drive and now it's fine. So  while starting the server or while the server is up, .bin file is created as same size as fixed memory (startup memory).

My concern is how the .bin is linked with smart page file? in our case even after changing the location of Smart page file got the error, that means the .bin is trying to create with configuration path.

For better performance we believe always we have to mention fixed memory than dynamic. Because of the above error we kept the configuration / smart paging and checkpoint location local to server than in SAN, but in case of server failure it will affect the recovery of guest server configuration files

Expect a clarity on this.

Hyper-V Svr2012 Win8: Operation on computer {servername} failed

Hi,

Weird one:

We have a hyper-v server 2012. I'm trying to connect my windows 8 hyper-v manager to it.

Currently I am connected and can change settings (by right-clicking the hostname in the manager) and even create, export and import vm's, BUT in the Virtual Machines Pane, no vms are listed. I'm greated with the following msg instead:

The operation on computer {server hostname} failed.

I've configured dcom on both machines, WMI open on both firewalls. My user account has been added to the server and added to the hyper-v administrator group on both machines.

What am I missing?

Applications Crashing on Virtual maschine hosted by Hyper-V with Heap Corruption

$

Hello everbody,

we currently investigate an issue regarding services/applications which crashing with internal .net error

The process was terminated due to an internal error in the .NET Runtime at IP 00007FFAD128A48F (00007FFAD0EA0000) with exit code 80131506.

Using Paged Heap Verfication and Analyzing serveral dumps, it seems that the GC causes that issue, if it runs on gcServer mode. This only happens since we update .net to 4.5 on that virtual maschine and it only occurs if the memory of the VM is 64 GB (which is used by the crashing service/application up to 90%).

We can produce the same error with a real simply .net application and it only occurs with gcServer (gcConcurrent is independet). As the crash can only reproduce on high memory VMs (meaning not on small memory VM - 10 GB -  and not on real hardware up to 64 GB). We want to ask if this is maybe a Hyper-V issue, and is maybe allready known and can be fixed. In the past, that crash sometimes causes also a restart of the whole VM.

Thanks for your support!

VSS Error in writer Hyper-V

I have a cluster with CSV 5 and DPM can't perform backup on only a few machines in the cluster, it apesenta VSS the following error:

Well, how did not get any results in searches, then checked the versions of the IC on client machines as clusters migrated from 2008 to 2012 some were outdated, updated them, even just to leave everything compliance.

So I decided to clear the "Backup (volume snapshot)" and now he backs up but does the same linux machines, saving the machine and causing downtime of it, and even if you are a linux machine with this option it can not perform the backup this because it tries utilizr VSS method (I think).

Please, anyone help-me?

thanks!

Hyper-v VM - merged .avhd files - now cant start as missing .vsv file

Hi All,

Yesterday i shut down one of our VMs to allow the snapshots to merge and then tried to start the VM but got the following error:

'VM' could not initialize.

An attempt to initialize VM save state failed.

'VM' could not initialize. (Virtual Machine ID ........)

'VM' could not create or access saved state file E:\....... .vsv

When i looked for one i realised that a .vsv file doesnt exist for the VM. I thought the .vsv file was a temporary file and that the VM should happily start without it?

Any help is much appreciated!

Hyper-v cluster issues after adding new nodes

$

I have a Hyperv cluster consist of 4 nodes with win2k8R2 SP1 on IBM X3650 M3. The cluster is managed by SCVMM 2012 SP1. The CSV is a IBM DS3524 fibre connection through SAN Switch.

I have an individual Hyper-v host installed with the win2k8R2 SP1 on IBM X3650 M4. We decide to add to the cluster. The new node is configured to the same as the cluster node server. The new node failed to add to the cluster. It passed the validation but failed on adding the node to the cluster.

The error stated is:

Error (25334)
Adding host mghyperv04.dtp.local to the cluster 2thqhvfarm01.dtp.local failed because of error An error occurred while performing the operation . Please refer to cluster documentation for resolving cluster problems.

But later I found the new host is member of the cluster through SCVMM and failover cluster manager. But the CSV status for the disk becomes online (redirected access) and causes problems to the VM.

I shutdown the newly added host, and the CSV status returns to online. When I power on the new node again, it takes very long to boot to the windows and when the new node's failover services started, the CSV status for the disk becomes online (redirected access) again.

I check on the disk management on the new nodes, it takes forever to get it load.

And the MPIO for all the nodes have lots of devices added. Previously it only have IBM MPIO devices.

I been scratching my head how to resolve this. Please advise.

Thanks

Live Migration between AD Forests

Hello Everyone.

I would like to LiveMigrate a VM from HostA in AD Forest1 to HostB in AD Forest2.  There is a two-way trust established between the two AD Forests.  Does anyone know if this is possible?  I have not been successful.

create cluster vmm 2012 sp1

I can't seem to create a cluster.  When I try using the wizard, at the end I get an error that says "Network configuration of hosts to be clustered requires at least one static IP address to create a cluster.  Please specify at least one IP address and retry the operation.  ID 25342".  No where in the wizard is there a place to specify an IP.

The only place where this may be appropriate is teh "virtual switches" tab, which has nothing in it.

Both hosts have 2, 2gbit NICs attached to the same logical switch with a single virtual adapter with the management IP.

How can I create a cluster here?

setting up internal network with internet access

I have installed a copy of hyper-v 2012 core, and I am trying to make a test environment to learn on, I have already created 3 virtual machines, one will be the DC, one will run Exchange, and the last one will be a windows 7 client. Now, I want this to be an internal network, but also have internet access, all the information I have come across online is very confusing for someone just getting started with hyper-v. Any help/advice is appreciated.

Hyper-V Replica Doesn't Seem to Replicate Expanded VHDX File?

$

I'm running Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials as a VM on Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (Server Core).  I am using Hyper-V replica and extended replication to copy the Essentials VM to two backup Hyper-V servers.  This has been working for months.

This evening my 2 Tb VHDX used by Essentials VM was nearly out of space.  I took down the VM and expanded the VHDX to 4 Tb. Then I restarted Essentials and used Disk Manager to allocate the new 2 Tb to give me a 4 Tb of space for Essentials to use. The primary VM seems to be working normally.

But Hyper-V replication doesn't seem to be functioning correctly.  I'm wondering if I'll need to delete the replication and start over since the size of the VHDX increased compared to the original configuration?

When I try and get replication to resume (from primary to secondary) I am prompted to resync which I have attempted many times. The primary creates a snapshot and then after a few moments the snapshot is merged back into the primary VM. But the VHDX on the secondary still shows it is 2 Tb in size.  So the resynchronization doesn't seem to have completed correctly?  Plus I have the option to "Resume Replication" from the primary which also implies the prior resyncrhonization failed.

I haven't found any error messages using Server Manager to explain why the resync seems to fail.

At one point I found I was able to resync from the secondary to the tertiary server.  I don't know what that actually accomplished, but both still have a 2 Tb VHDX instead of the 4 Tb that should now be available.

Any ideas on how to get replica and extended replica to work without having to delete and start replication over from the beginning?

Thanks for any assistance.

Are there any documenting or reporting tools for Hyper-V 2008 R2?  I just need to get a list of all VM guest running and their associated VHD files along with where those VHD's are stored.

Thanks!
