Weird Hyper-V Network Issue

$

Hi,

We're having a very odd and elusive networking problem with a Hyper-V 2012 R2 server.

Shortly are upgrading all our servers to Server 2012 R2 and migrating to Hyper-V 2012 R2 users started to notice that Outlook would disconnect and redirected documents would become inaccessible randomly at varying times throughout the day.

After some troubleshooting we managed to isolate the following behaviour.

Pings to the VM's drop off first followed shortly by pings to the Hyper-V host.

The packets are dropped for a period of around 2 minutes intermittently around 1-2 times per day.

The timing seems completely random.

Neither the VM's nor Hyper-V host register any loss of network connection.

VM's can not talk to each other over the vSwitch whilst the problem is occurring.

Normal service resumes after usually around 2 minutes or so.

Nothing seems to be logged in the event log on any of the machines to do with network issues. The only trace we can find is EventID 2070 been logged on the exchange servers application log to say that the DC is unavailable. And on the domain controller/file server we can see LDAP session time outs and SMB handles been scavenged.

The server is running on a ML350P Gen8  (Broadcom NIC) - All firmware and drivers have been updated.

All servers are up to date with all the latest updates.

We have also tried a second Intel based NIC but this has made no difference as did swapping all network cables and the switch.

There are currently 4 VM's connected to a single vSwitch which is linked to a dedicated port on the Intel NIC - management is not allowed through this interface but is done through the second interface on the Intel NIC.

Has anyone come across this before? It is causing a lot of problems with the client and we are very close to rebuilding the Hyper-V host with an earlier version of Windows server.

Thanks,

Richard.

Limit incoming bandwidth of Guest VM in Hyper-V 2012 R2 Host

Hi,

I'm trying to limit incoming bandwidth of Guest VM on Hyper-V (Host is running Windows Server 2012 R2). I noticed once I enabled Bandwidth Management, it only limits the outgoing bandwidth. The incoming is not limited to what I set earlier.

May I know how to set limitation on incoming bandwidth?

Thanks.

How to recover from a corrupted VHD file?

There is a tool that can recover logical problems in the VHD structure?

A friend called me and told me that his VS R2 Enterprise with 4 VMs suffered a power falure and after that, one of the VMs does not startup anymore. The erros is the same as using VHDMOUNT, something similar: "VHD file could not be mounted"

There is a CHKDSK for VHD files?

How to "rebuild" a corrupetd VHD file? How to analyze logical structure of a offline VHD file?

Cannot uninstall Win2k12 HyperV Integration services; Help!

Hi,

So I have 3 W2k8R2 VMs that were running on a W2k8R2 Ent Host.  They had version 6.1 of the Integration Services on them.

We temporarily moved the 3 VMs to a W2K12R2 host and installed the W2k12R2 Integration Services, which are version 6.3.

Now I have moved the 3 VMs back to the original W2k8R2 host, but no way, no how can I get the version 6.3 Integration services off of them.  Even after an uninstall on the W2k12R2 host, they are still there.  If i try to reinstall Ver 6.1 from the W2k8r2 host, it does not overwrite the newer files.

So, when i try to back up the W2k8R2 host and the VMs, the host's VSS cannot talk to the newer version of VSS on the VMs, so HyperV stops the VMs at the beginning of the backup job to snapshot the VMs.  It restarts them after 30 to 60 minutes and completes the backup.  Before when the VMs had 6.1 on them, the VMs would backup "hot" and online with now downtime.

Any assistance greatly appriciated.  Is there a way to uninstall 6.3, or am I hooped?

Hi,

Host 20012 R2

VM 2012 R2

assigned 6GB of RAM for SQL server.

Under assigned memory in Hyper-V manager it shows around 1GB but in task manager of VM around 6GB

The screenshot was made after opening SQL installation media.

During installation it was around 6GB. Could not find the process taken Gigs...

After restart the same picture. Assigned is a bit higher that 1 GB but in task man 5.8GB

What is this? I want to try switching to static memory.

Please see the screenshot.

Hyper-V 2008R2 Cluster only backup a Windows 2012 VM with saved state

Hello,

We have a 3 node Hyper-V 2008R2 Cluster with 20 VM's. We have also now some Windows Server 2012(r2) VM's on the cluster. The problem is that the backup of these VM's are only done trough saved state and not online. I already did some searching and I know it's a Hyper-V VSS problem that should be solved with setting a registry key inside the W2012 VM(http://mvanvliet.wordpress.com/2013/04/10/issue-windows-server-2012-virtual-machines-can-only-be-backed-up-using-saved-state/). But this doesn't work for me. I also checked this settings:

  • Backup (Volume Snapshot) Integration Service is disabled or not installed.
  • The virtual machine has one or more dynamic disks.
  • The virtual machine has one or more non-NTFS based volumes.
  • The virtual machine Cluster Resource Group in a cluster setup is offline.
  • The virtual machine is not in a running state.
  • A ShadowStorage assignment of a volume inside the virtual machine is explicitly set to a different volume other than itself.
  • An App-V drive is installed on the virtual machine that creates a non-NTFS volume.

None of these are true. Does anyone have onther option to solve this? Thanks!

Hyper-V Replica Paused After Physical Host Reboots

We have a couple VMs that are setup using Hyper-V Replica. Everything works fine until one of the physical hosts reboots. Each reboot causes the replication to pause. When the host comes back online, it does not resume replication automatically, which means we have to manually resume replication each time we have a host server reboot.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Is there a way to have replication resume automatically?

Thanks!

Migration from VMware to Hyper-V 2012

I am looking for some advice on migrating from VMware with an existing SAN to Hyper-V 2012 on a new SAN. I have 5 ESXi 4.1 hosts hosting about 20 virtual machines on a MD3000 SAN that holds that data. I want to migrate to Hyper-V that will be utilizing a new recently purchased Dell Equalogic SAN as its storage. What would be the best way to do this? I had thought about getting the 1st Hyper-V host setup and configured with the Equalogic, running that along side the existing VMware infrastructure and then converting the vms to Hyper-V on the new storage with the standalone MVMC. Once all the vms are converted I would then re-purpose the MD3000 as additional backup storage. Would this be a workable solution. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hyper-V VLAN changes

On few occasions now we have noticed that a server becomes inaccessible from others in the same domain. Server can ping the local domain controllers, but nothing else. When we run the powershell command to check the status of the VLAN, we see that it is configured correctly to "Community 2,10".

We have found that way around it is by running the command below to re-apply the same settings:

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -VMName 'servername' -Community -PrimaryVlanId 2 -SecondaryVlanIdList 2,10

As soon as we do this, server becomes accessible once again. Host is running Windows 2012 R2 clustered server and we have seen this on VM's running different Server OS's (2003, 2008, 2008 R2).

Just wanted to check and see if anyone else have experienced something similar and if there is a way around it.

Thanks.

Hi
I Have a HP-DL380G8 server and windows server 2012R2 on it called BaseServer,

we have also 5 Hyper-v Windows 2012R2 machins on BaseServer. one of them is AD-DC. all 5 Hyper-v servers are joined to a domain.

the problem is when we start working with this solution some of our network device (Like access points- WIFI) stop working! this means we can see Access point but no device can connect to it!

when we disconnect the HP server from Lan they start working again.

what we should do?

Please help us

Hyper-V 2012 redundancy questions

$

Let me start by saying I have Microsoft SQL failover cluster experience.  I also have built 3 Hyper V servers and used them for a while, but I still consider myself relatively new to virtualization.

I need to go beyond single servers and add redundancy into a new deployment.  This will be a big deployment.

I will be using an Equallogic array as a type of SAN architecture for the back end, on 10GIG SFP switches.

I'm building two identical servers for a front end HyperV server.  I'm looking for an active/passive type scenario where if one server fails, the other pick up seamlessly, but they use the same back end data store.

I have enough IOPS and space, and front end server power (processors and 512GB memory) to create 25 virtual servers, then a second front end server just for fail over.

I know HyperV 2012 has new features like a HyperV replica, but I think for my scenario I still need to build a HyperV cluster.  Can anyone confirm?

Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V network latencies

$

Hi All,

I have an issue with our Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V hosts that I can't seem to figure out. Situation:

2 x Dell PowerEdge R815 servers with AMD opteron 6376 16 core CPU's and 128 GB RAM running Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V.

2 virtual machines running on the same physical host and connected to the same virtual switch show high TCP connection latencies. One virtual machines runs a SQL Server 2012 database instance and a Dynamics AX 2012 R2 instance. The other machine a SharePoint 2013 instance and the AX client. We see latencies of 20ms and higher on most of the TCP connections that are made from the sharepoint machine to the sql server machine.

At first I thought it might have something to do with the physical NIC's. It turned out that VMQ wasn't correctly supported by the firmware of the Broadcom BCM5709c cards. By default this setting is enabled. Turning off the VMQ setting somewhat improved the situation but the latencies are still at 8ms and higher.

What I don't understand is what influence enabling/disabling VMQ should have on network performance. As I understand it now virtual machines connected to the same virtual switch bypass the physical altogether. Another point is that VMQ should actually improve performance, not decrease it.

Another question I have is about the various tcp offloading settings on the physical NIC's. After installing the new firmware and drivers from Dell most of these settings are set to disabled. The documents I have been able to find talk about Windows Server 2008, any thought how these settings relate to Windows Server 2012 and whether they should be enabled?

Thanks in advance for your time and thoughts

Kind regards,

Dennes Schuitema

Hyper-V latency

I have a brand new Dell server with a fresh installation of Hyper-V on Win ENT and 4 VMs.  There seems to be a strange latency in the interface in typing and in the keyboard, both interactively and remotely.  Is this normal?  I've used Hyper-v many times before on many other servers and haven't noticed a lag.  Any ideas?

Thanks

High ping latency on Windows Server 2012 virtual machine on Hyper-v

Hello team,

I've been experienced an issue that is affected the performance of my environment. I have the following scenario:

1 - Server Dell R720

1 - SAN DELL MD3220i

1 - Switch Cisco 3750G

As the picture shows, I just have a switch, I'm pretty know that the recommended setting is with two switches, however I just have one of them. A personal of Cisco has configured this device with different vlan's so that means that the connection between the storage and the host works so nice.

The problem is the latency that the virtual machines are experiencing. I have Windows Server 2012 and I'm using Hyper-v to virtualize my virtual machines.

Does anyone know which parameters May I need to modify, enable or disable on Windows Server 2012 - Hyper V to work fine?

I would appreciate your help in this regard!

Thank you in advance!

Regards,

Paul Mendoza.

Deploying VM using VM template in SCVMM 2012

Hi experts,

I have SCVMM 2012 running on Windows Server 2012 R1.

I have a custom linux VM running on it with two disks.I created a VM template using this VM.

But I have a large disk of size 160GB. So when I deploy a VM using this template, the copy operation is taking a very long time of 3 hours approx. to complete. This is very long, even if I run the SCVMM server in the Same Windows Server.

Any pointers on how to reduce this time?

I even disabled Encryption and used BITS over HTTP. But that does not reduce the time much.

Thanks in advance,

Saleem

Non unique MAC addresses when creating VM NIC on ManagementOS

Hi

I've just hit a problem configuring hyper-V server 2012 using powershell and I'm hoping someone can help

Scenario:

  • A pair of intel X520 10G nics  configured as a Team using native windows teaming.
  • a vswitch connected to the team
  • a vmnetworkadapter added to the vswitch with the -managementOS flag to allow the host OS to use it.

The vnic is created with a mac address of 00-15-5d-00-00-00 on every server.

assigning a static address solves the immediate problem but is not an acceptable solution.

Any ideas ?
