VM - No internet access

$

Host - 2012R2 Data Center with Hyper-V role and basic file & print sharing. AD is another physical host

2 NICs with Teaming into vlan TEAM2012

Issue:

Very close...

I created a VM and loaded 2012R2 in it. However, I cannot get internet access in the VM. The VM adapter is Microsoft Hyper-V Network Adapter with static IPv4 & IPv6 addresses both pointing to the DNS & Gateway. The VM adapter is "unidentified network". The Host  is NIC teamed as TEAM2102. On the Host Network connections I see the 2 real NICs, TEAM2012 and vEthernet (Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver - Virtual). The vEthernet is "Unidentified network".

In the Hyper-V Manager, the Virtual Switch Manager name is Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Drive - Virtual Switch and is set as internal for connection type. There is a connection type for external network and it has the Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver available; however, if I select that the system fails and reboots.

How do I get internet access working and clear this "unidentified public network"?

System Hangs When creating virtual disk

$

Hello,

I have been having an issue creating virtual disks that are over 500GB. What happens is the vdisk is created but the system hangs and the only way I can get back into it is to power it off... Once I get back into the server and I try to load the new vdisk in a virtual machine v-manager tells me it is a corrupt disk. I have looked in the event viewer and I see no errors, except for the typical unexpected shutdown. This happens if I use Windows 2008 Hyper-V or Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, I have 5TB of free space on the partition that I want to use for the vdisk, thinking there was something wrong with the internal drives I tried again with an iSCSI 16 TB DroboPro... Same thing, disk is created and the system locks up. Another thing that I noticed that I have not seen before with ESX or XenServer, when creating the disk it takes forever, I mean a full day for a 1TB vdisk, seems kind of long. The 500GB took about a half of a day to create...

This is a new Lenovo TS140 with 8GB of RAM and three network cards in it. The system only needs to hold a small Linux image that is going to be used for a storage gateway.

Any ideas?

Adding memory to guest OS in Hyper-V 2012R2

I have a production SQL Server that I need to increase the memory on. The VM had 32gb allocated to it and SQL is set to use a maximum amount of 28gb. I increased the memory in Hyper-V and restarted the VM, but the additional memory I set is not showing up in Task Manager. If I check Resource Monitor I see an installed amount of 43008mb, but a total amount of 32768mb. It seems the additional memory is set to Hardware Reserve, which is sitting at 10240mb. I am not using dynamic memory.

I am using Hyper-V 2012R2 on the host, but the guest OS is 2008R2. Any help is appreciated.

add v-processor to running SQL server

Hello,

if I remember correctly adding virtual processors to running SQL server could be tricky from performance point of view.

May be I mistaken and there is absolutely no problem...

I am setting up SQL 2012 on Server 2012. Can I be that there will be no impact in the future if I will start with 1 processors and lets say in two month I will add second one if necessary and in 6 month I will add 2 more to bring it to 4 if necessary.

Basically, it is general question: can I add processors to SQL server if required.

What are best practice? I know that playing with processor affinity is a bad idea.

Thanks.

Hi,

Is that possible to move a Cluster Shared Volume (dedicated to 1 VM) with its associated VM together if the VM live migrates to another node ?

I try to find a way on Internet but nothing ...

Thank you for the answer :-)

Cluster manager unresponsive

Hi all, i'm in trouble with a 4 node 2012 hyper-v cluster. After some weeks of normal operations i cannot connect to failover cluster manager who tells me that "the object does not exists" even if i could connect in rdp to the virtual ip server, resolve the address with nslookup and so on. Meanwhile even Hyperv management console goes unresponsive and does not let me connect and manage the server (localhost or not is the same) the error in this case is "check the virtual machine management service is running and that you are authorized to connect the server". Vms hosted by these servers still are responsive and in normal operations but i cannot manage them and/or view any state. I then check the service trying to restart that but it hangs and or crash. The only way i can solve this situation is shutdown the host to migrate the vms with several (minimal, modearate) downtimes. looking around in services and dependecies i noticed the RPC object seems to not exists and there is no way to restart the service.

Now i've restarted the servers and everything works fine, even if i think this issue should come back in some days/weeks. what should i check? maybe the failures comes after a live migration but i cannot tell this were an unluky situation or that should start the problem: everyday migrations don't give us any problems. this is going to be very frustrating.

Disk signature error while backup virtual machine

Hi,

Since we installed the new version of Data Protection Manager 2012 R2, we get issue messages while backing up Windows Server 2008 R2 or 2012 R2 virtual machines.

At every backups we will find the followings in Event Viewer:

Log Name:      System
Source:        partmgr
Date:          18.2.2014 21:40:34
Event ID:      58
Task Category: None
Level:         Warning
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      server01.domain.local
Description:
The disk signature of disk 2 is equal to the disk signature of disk 0.

This last line is repeated for each disk.

Sometime this line is preceded by the following:

Log Name:      System
Source:        VDS Basic Provider
Date:          20.1.2014 20:08:58
Event ID:      1
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      server01.domain.local
Description:
Unexpected failure. Error code: D@01010004

The registry is growing up with remaining entries under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2

May someone help me? Thank you

Not enough memory error in Hyper-V

I have got and error tring to run Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 r2. I have 2 gb of RAM and it says it is not enough memory. I used this official advice for Windows 8.1, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2911380 , refused. In the it says, actualy, about DWORD that is 32 bit. I looked again in Regedit, the MemoryReserve value was gone. So I took my chances and create a QWORD (64 bit) value with the same name, and it worked. Unfortunaly, I had to reinstall the OS and it does work. Tried thoose things several times, deleted and re-added all thoose values. Now I am confused, I wonder if there is any way to make Hyper-V to work?

Incorrect source mac address when network packet leaves hyper-v host

$

I am experiencing the following communication problem with my VM server running  on server 2012 hyper-v host:

when a network package leaves the vNIC of the VM it has the source mac address of the vNIC however when the same package leaves the physical NIC of the Host the package no longer has the source MAC address of the vNIC but that of the physical NIC.

It forgot to mention that the uplink of the virtual switch on the host is a network team using LACP and that uses the source and destination IP address as its load balancing mechanism.

Please note the following:

  • this behavior disappear when I either remove one of the cables from one of the teamed nics (the sources MAC is always that of the vNIC when the packet leaves the host etc)
  • the problem also disappears if I configure a static ARP in the client
  • The above behavior does not apply for all  communication for example I can have the cables of both teamed NICS connected and simple change the IP of the above problematic TFTP client form 192.168.1.22 to 192.168.1.13 and the communication works OK as the source MAC address of the VM will always be the correct MAC address that belongs to the vNIC.

Last but not least we have tried, replacing the NICS in the server, connecting the host server to a different switch and even replacing all the cabling to the host server but none of these helped to resolve the problem.

Has anyone seen this behavior? Any idea what could be causing this?

Hyper-v Cluster and new AD organisation.

$

Hello everyone.

We have a very very bad situation.

In one of our new customers we get the following configuraion.

Organisations AD was corrupted and lost

there are Hyper-v nodes WinSrv2012 in failover cluster hosted on  8x HP c7000 blade system

there is HP P2000 datastore 49.5 Tb full size.

there isn't VMM (please don't ask me "Why"

2 CSV volumes pesented to cluster (i suppose via Failover cluster services)

And the worst thing we actually don't have any backups. I suppose previous local administrators were irresponsible.

So we have the following behavior of system

We don't able to move Virtual machines between nodes even manually.
DAtastore is full. We cannot create  new LUN because All disks are used.
There are too many critical VM's which couldn't be stopped for a long time.

I have new AD but i can not rejoin nodes to the new domain because almost all node contain critical machines and as i told i can not move ones to another node as well. Also i cannot do it because in this case moved node will deleted from Failover cluster so in this case i can damage csv volumes.
Actually i can turn off each VM for a little time.

So i have a question. What is the best solution in this situation. can i use for migrate all hyper-v infrastructure to new AD but keep all most part VHD's in place.

Sorry for my EN. And Thank you in advance.

Hyper-v cluster with core switch downtime... what to do?

$

Is there a way to essentially "pause" the hyper-v cluster and keep things running but do NOT attempt to failover anything for any reason?

We have one Procurve 5412zl switch with two c7000 enclosures. In each c7000 enclosure there are two switches that connect all the blade servers within the enclosure. Those two switches are interconnected internally so they can communicate within the enclosure.

So if the core switch goes down the hyper-v servers in the same c7000 enclosure can still communicate but they will be seperated from the others in the other enclosure.

So we have 4 hyper-v servers in one enclosure and 3 in another. If i disconnect the core switch i'm wondering what will happen (if I reboot the switch which is what I need to do).

How can I avoid having to shut down everything for this and just tell hyper-v cluster to not do anything when the network is lost?

The host machine is running on Windows Server 2012 STD. and two Hyper-v machine running with dynamic HDD. one hyper-v machine HDD size increase as because of so many file copy in the hyper-v machine. and now i delete this file. But HDD hype-v machine size not reduce. So, how can i reduce the Hyper-v machine size. on that Hyper-v machine Exchange 2010SP3 running. the physical HDD getting space low. So, need to reduce the Hyper-v machine size.

I want to use 16-bit apps on Windows-8. Is Hyper-V a feature of Windows-8, so all I must do is to enable it and the I can use 16-bit apps under Windows-8? Or is it a virtual machiso that I must istall other OS under it and under that OS use 16-bit apps? Answer, please.

Ditect Attach Storage question

I have question on storages on hyper-v.

We have a SAN storage on our company and installed hyper-v on one server.

My question is what will happen to the storage disk on the Server machine itself?

Will I still see and use it the way I see the SAN storage?

Can Hyper-V install the guess OS on its direct attached storage?
