Sent back to ctrl alt del screen when trying to log into SQLserver

I’ve had this strange issue where my SQLserver locks me out from logging into the server. First RDP stops workings so I try to login through the Hyper-V manager and when I type in my credentials and  hit enter it brings me back to the ctrl alt del. I have to reset the virtual machine through the hyper v manager to get it working again. This happens once a week and these are the errors I receive in event manager. This server is used to run Macola our ERP Software.

Best way to migrate existing XP SP3 partition to a virtual machine to run via Windows 8.1 as physical partition and not a vhd?

$

Hi I have a current XP SP3 setup have been using in a dual boot with Windows 8.1(on separate partitions on different hard drives - I think these are SATA drives)  but now am thinking of migrating my XP partition preferably as a live virtual machine to be run as a guest via Windows 8.1 as host so I don't have to do the rebooting.  Also prefer this to making a VHD of my XP so can use the existing partition allocated for it rather than taking up extra space as VHD on my windows 8 (and don't want yet to replace my xp dual boot in case it does not work so well as vhd, as I have a lot of old educational programs my kids still use on it that I don't really want to put onto my W8.1).  Will also save time if I don't have to convert it to VHD first.  I also do not want to reinstall a new XP Sp3 virtual machine from scratch for same reason - will take too long to resetup -just use existing as is.

I have used VMWare player and Virtual Box in past with an old 98SE system as a virtual VHD/VPC file but VMWare workstation is paid which may be the one I need to use a physical partition but I prefer to try freeware options first.

Will Hyper-V in Windows 8.1 (I have retail PRO version of both my XP and Windows 8.1) be able to do the same as VMWare workstation?  OR is there another option to run the physical XP?

The other thing with my XP setup is that the user profiles that people login with are located on a different partition E (80GB) to my XP which is on J (100GB) and most of the programs for it run from partition D (over 120GB) and the XP boot loader resides on a partition C (2GB) (which is not the Windows8.1 partition which becomes C only when it boots, but this C drive for XP may also be having the Windows 8 boot loader and files for that -using EasyBCD to handle boot menu of W7 type boot loader).

So I need a system that can mount these other physical partitions also alongside with my XP partition when it boots up.

So what are my options for running this XP SP3 setup via Windows 8 as a guest operating system?

Also will doing this be likely to require reactivation of my existing windows XP (retail) which means I cannot then use it again if I go back to the XP dual boot at times or in case the VM setup does not work?

Also do I need to change my XP first so that it boots off its own drive rather than the C partition - and how do I set this up then using EasyBCD or windows boot repair?

Running server 2012 in a 2 node failover cluster with a 2012 R2 vdi setup.

'abc-VMP33': Cannot allocate more memory to the virtual machine because of failure to extend the memory contents file '\\abcSOFSCAP0.abc.forest.org\VDI\DesktopStorage\Personal_Desktop\abc-VMP33\Virtual Machines\C0C49EDB-9B49-4B45-AE1B-523BBEDF259B\C0C49EDB-9B49-4B45-AE1B-523BBEDF259B.bin' to 693 MB: An unexpected network error occurred. We  had this happen on all running machines. It spams the logs hard. If we live migrate them to one node and back all is fixed.

We did have a storage hiccup earlier that we believe kicked off this issue.

Any information is great.

Massive Fibre Channel Performance dropoff after installing Hyper-V Role

$

Hi all,

using direct attached fibre-channel disk we see throughput of approx. 500-800MB/s if we copy/paste a 28GB file to the same disk.
Once we install the Hyper-V Role, and re-test, we see a throughput of 126MB/s maximum performing the same task.

In addition throughput speeds become extremely varied ( from 126MB/s down to 1MB/s! ) for the same transfers.

Hardware and Software details given below.

Have you seen this behaviour? Can you recommend a resolution?

Best Regards, Sascha

Hyper-V causing intermittent network issues on Host?

$

I have a strange issue, I am not entirely sure Hyper-V is causing it, but it certainly seems that way.

Scenario

Host: Windows 8.1
Network Adapter: Intel Dual Band AC-7260 (Wifi)

Network Adapters (relevant ones are highlighted yellow)

Issue

When I continuously ping my wifi router (on the host machine), it intermittently drops.  See the screen shot below.

This issue also manifests itself within the Virtual Machines as the machine constantly getting a DHCP IP address and then losing it.  This happens continuously every few minutes.

Currently, I can resolve the issues by disabling Wifi on the host and then re-enabling it.  I sometimes have to do that 2/3 times for it to stop dropping out.  But it does fix the issue.

What have I tried?

I have been in contact with Dell (laptop is an XPS 15 2013) and Intel support.  They have replaced the motherboard and now they want to replace the WiFi card.  Personally I don't think it will help.

Why do I think it is HyperV related?

If I run the host machine with the VMs powered down, I do not get any issues.  However, as soon as I start any Hyper-V VMs, the issue will usually start pretty quickly.

What it isn't.

This is not related to wifi signal or anything like that.

  • The wifi router is 2 meters from my laptop.
  • Other devices in the house do not exhibit this behaviour
  • The behaviour is consistent across all networks (office, home, coffee shop etc)

Thanks for any help.

Windows 2003 R2 x86 File server migration to Windows 2012 or R2 Deduplication on hyper-v (not host)

$

I am looking into migrate Win2003x86 file server (all company shares and permission reside on this svr) to Windows 2012 or R2. Used data size is about 650GB. Questions:

1. Use Win2012 or R2?

2. Should I enable deduplication on the host? I have 6 hyper-vs running on this host. Risks?

3. Should I enable deduplication on hyper-v (file server) itself? Is it recommended on hyper-v? Risks? Would I benefit much on space saving?

4. I run backup exec back up that is using dedup storage. Would the backup job actually run on a windows server that has its own dedup enabled? I should probably ask symantec, but if you already know the answer...

Hyper-V WIndows Server 2012 R2 event ID 157 Disk x has been surprise removed using windows backup

$

I've found a few postings on Event ID 157 for Windows 2012 R2, but no answers

We've upgraded from Server 2012 to 2012 R2. Hyper-V Role. Event ID 157 occurs when Windows Backup is running to backup Hyper-V machines. People have reported the same issue I am having. They have ID 157 occurring only during the Windows Backup process or if they use VSS Snapshots to backup hyper-v virtual machines.

I've found event ID 157 was designed for 2012 R2 Storage Groups when a disk is removed, so it seems like it is a bug showing up during Windows Backup.

One time (out of about 10 now - once each day) that this event was logged, a software RESET was sent to the LSI Mega Raid controller for half of the array and consistency checks were immediately done. I hope this does not happen again.

Everything worked fine before we moved from 2012 to 2012 R2. I've done a clean install and it still happens.

I've looked through the event logs on the virtual machines and we have one Windows 2008 Server running SQL 2008 R2 and it chokes through the entire backup process with hundreds of errors, starting with the SQL VSS Writer receiving a command that it does not understand. From then onward it says tables and data are corrupt, but the normal SQL maintenance job we have running for SQL Server backs up the databases and performs consistenacy checks without issues.

I've just remove the SQL Server from the Windows Backup and will see how it goes tonight.

In case this is related to the SQL Server, here's the error that is 1st logged as soon as the Windows Backup on the host begins:

Event ID 513, CAPI2, Error, Cruptographic Services failed while processing the OnIdentity() call in the System Writer Object.

Details: AddCoreCsiFiles: BeginFileEnumeratrion() failed.

System Error: Access is denied.

After that it freezes the databases, gives dozens of errors for each table, and then restores each table to normal operation.

The Guest SQL server appears to always be the 1st VM to get backed up, so I doubt this has anything to do with it, but thought I should provide as many details as possible, especially when everyone else has discovered it is VSS related and this guest is reporting VSS errors.

What do you think?
thanks
John
P.S. there are no hard drive errors, so running check disk will not help.

Hi,

So i set up a storage server. Created a disk pool, a VD and an iSCSI VD. Created a target and chose initiator IPs of my test host. Disk shows as ok, everything is fine.

I go to my Hyper-V host and run commands as shown below. As you can see it gets connected just fine and storage server says initiator is connected ok, but i can se no disks... Why?

Sharing VLANs with VMWare

We have an existing VMware 3.5 environment where the vlans are all set up for Management, VMotion etc.

my client is moving away from VMware and switching to Hyper v long term.

There is an immediate requirement to deploy 2012 servers. ESX 3.5 environment does not support.

Two DL385 G6 servers that are certified for 2012 have been found and I was wondering if there would be any problem in using the existing VLANs for the similar services Management, Live migration etc for the creation of a temporary Hyper V failover cluster until we have designed the new Hyper V clusters to replace ESX 3.5.

Creating a cluster on a single Hyper-V host with SAS

I´m having this "disk bus type does not support clustering" thing when evaluating stroage in FCM. I´m creating a lab, which requires cluster, I´m using Hyper-V 2012 on a HP Powerfull workstation with LSI SAS controller and 2 SAS disks. I´m having 2 W2012 nodes on a same Hyper-V host, which will be members of a cluster.

With the same hardware and VMware, things worked like this:
- I had 1 mirorred array of 2 SAS disk on LSI controller.
- When adding a disk to VM node, I enabled sharing/pass-through option of desired disk
- I created a volume in first node in Windows Server's Disk Manager
- As iscsi, evaluation of a storage was done and everything worked as a charm

With Hyper-V, I don´t know how to do iscsi. Now my disks are as SCSI, and not supported. Question is, how to create a storage correctly, supported my FCM?
- Should I keep array in LSI? Or should I do single disks?
- Should I create vdmx inside the Hyper-V host, or should I connect disks directly to a VM nodes?
- Should I stick with scsi or fiber channel?
- Which is better, to create a mirrored drive in LSI, or with Windows´s disk manager?

Merge Questions

I have a 500GB R1

Someone took a snapshot and deleted it a long time ago - I think back in January.

There are two VMs on the Win Hyperv 2008R2 server

1 with the snapshot has a 40GB C: and a 200GB D:

The other was a 40GB C:

I shut down the one with the snapshoot and expected the merge to just work.... however, the second server paused due to disk space issues.  I am monitoring the merge process using powershell get-wmiobject (widely documented online).

What has me puzzled is the server has basically run out of drive space.  When I run the get-wmi I see the precentage complete rising and the Instance IDs changing.  It has been running since Friday evening.

What do the InstanceIDs mean (they dont match the UID of any of the avhds)?

As things are progressing through to different instanceids - how come the .avhs aren't shrinking or being deleted?

Will this thing ever finish?  I can't start the other VM because there is no drive space available.

I ordered 2 more drives to plug into my server that has 2 slots available.  My plan is to put the new drives in and move the 2 server VM to it and start it up.

HyperV 2012 R2 Replica question

Hello,

We have 2 HyperV 2012R2 Servers. Each of them, for load balancing, runs different VMs. Can we set them to replicate to each other their VMs?

If so, what shall we consider?

Best regards

Hyper-V services can't be restarted !!

Hello,

First, I have to say that I am a newbie to Hyper-V.I have hyper-v on windows server 2012 r2 in a lab environment. I am trying to benchmark the performance of VMs with different OSs by measuring the performance of their disks (using fio and IOmeter tools). The performance of a VM with Linux (ubuntu 12.04) was acceptable in the beginning (average of 35 MBPS to write a 4 GB file size with 1 MB block size). But for a VM with windows server 2008 r2, the performance was very poor (average of 4.7 MBPS to write a 4 GB file size with 1 MB block size). I installed the integration services to increase the performance, but nothing happened. So I have checked the the services on the host itself to find them not running and cann't be restarted !!

I checked the first VM, the one with linux and it gave me the same poor performance of the other one. So I am guessing that the services on the host were running and suddenly stopped. I have tried to reinstall them from the iso file but they still stopped.

How do I restart the services ?! and are they going to make any difference in the perfomance of the disks, since I cann't find in their description any thing related to disks ?!

Note: I am using the same disk and same processor for my VMs.

Thanks in advance

IOPS capped on a VM within Hyper-V

quick question ... we get 100,000 IOPS once we used SQLIO against a VHDX file . ( let's say disk2.vhdx)

from inside a VM , we mount the same disk as a secondary disk and run SQLIO against it ; we get about 30,000 IOPS.

There is no QoS for storage defined yet ..

Is there any other limit ? we increased VM memory to 64 GB , processor to 8 and never went above 30,000

BSOD Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 - Critical Process Died

I am running Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (Server Core) on three servers.  Unfortunately none of them have identical hardware configurations - thus I can't easily tell if there is some compatibility problem between a Microsoft update and my hardware. All three systems are setup to automatically download updates.

A few weeks ago one of the systems seemed to be rebooting regularly.  After connecting a monitor I saw a BSOD with a message "Critical Process Died."  I'm not 100% certain of this, but these BSOD reboot problems seemed to have started shortly after getting a recent automatic update(s)?

I have checked the Event Logs and looked for dumps or other logs, but haven't been able to locate anything that explained the chronic BSOD failures on the one server.  Nor have I found anything that tells me what critical process died.

After various attempts to fix the problem were unsuccessful I reformatted the drive and reinstalled Hyper-V Server 2012 R2.  The server seems to work okay with the intial re-installation of Hyper-V Server 2012 R2.

I configured the server and then start to download all the availlable patches.  After one (or two?) reboots I typically find only a single patch (KB2919355) left to be installed.  This seems to be the equivalent of the Windows 8.1 Update (and thus a required patch to get further patches)?

Typically when I try and install KB2919355 I'll get a BSOD during the installation process.  I have also tried rebooting and looking for new patches, after the initial BSOD, and I'll get a list of some other patches.  KB2919355 seems to be a group of fixes?  And it seems as though some part of KB2919355 got installed, but then I get the BSOD.  And after the reboot what I'm seeing is the list of the group (from KB2919355) which did not get installed due to the BSOD?

I continued on (rebooting if a BSOD occurred) and eventually got all patches installed.  But I still get occasional BSOD failures with Critical Process Died message.  The message says something about writing information to disk with 0% complete, but that number never changes.  After a while the system simply reboots.

After all patches were installed I came across the following commands and tried to use them.  The first time I attempted to use DISM I got a BSOD failure.  But I was eventually able to run both SFC and DISM.  Neither seemed to show any problems were found.

sfc /scannow

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

In one (of several) attempts to re-install Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 I made sure my BIOS was updated to the latest version and got the most recent driver for my Areca ARC-1222 controller.  Of the three servers one has the Areca RAID6 controller, one has an LSI RAID6 controller, and one is using Storage Spaces.  The LSI and SS systems have the same type of CPU, motherboard, and RAM. My Areca system has an older type of CPU, motherboard, and RAM.

This morning I tried to re-install Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 again.  After the first group of patches were installed and a reboot I got another large list of patches.  I don't recall off hand if this was the exact same order of patches that happened on prior attempts or not?  I had thought there was only one large list of patches, reboot, and then KB2919355 was the only remaining patch?  While trying to install this second large list of patches I got a BSOD.  I didn't notice whether or not KB2919355 was included in this second list or not?  These kind of inconsistent results/observations are why I'm not 100% sure that KB2919355 is causing my BSOD problems.  I believe KB2919355 is installed and working on my other two systems? Which might imply some type of a hardware problem with this system?

Unless someone has a better suggestion then later tonight I'll try re-installing Hyper-V Sever 2012 R2 again, but stopping before KB2919355 gets installed.  It seems to me the system is stable at this point, but I'll leave it that way for several hours to verify I don't get another BSOD.  If I don't have any problems without KB2919355 installed that implies my hardware is okay.  Although I suppose there could be some incompatibility between KB2919355 and my hardware and not simply a software problem with KB2919355?

I would appreciate suggestions others may have on how to rectify this problem.  Especially any thoughts on how to determine what critical process is failing and causing the BSOD.

I did come across a webpage about a whole list of symptoms related to KB2919355, but my specific problem didn't seem to be mentioned.

Thanks for any assistance.
