Forum FAQ: Error 0x80070005 when exporting Hyper-V VMs over the Network

$
0
0

Symptom

You use Hyper-V on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • In Hyper-V Manager, you try to try to export a virtual machine to a network share.
  • You have the full control permissions on the network share.

In this scenario the export may fail with an error that resembles the following:

An error occurred while attempting to export the virtual machine.

Failed to copy file during export.

Failed to copy file from ‘<source path of VHD file>’ to ‘<network share>’: General access denied error (0x80070005)

Cause

When you export a virtual machine in Hyper-V manager, it is the System account of the Hyper-V host that executes the export. This problem occurs because the Hyper-V host does not have permission on the network share

Resolution

Ensure the permissions allow the Computer account of the Hyper-V host performing the Export to update the shared folder.

Note: While following steps are specific to 2008, the idea is the same for updating the share and NTFS permissions if the share is hosted on other versions of Windows. You can adjust the steps accordingly.

Updating the NTFS level permissions:

1.  On the destination server, Right-click on the shared folder and select Properties.
2.  Select the Security tab.
3.  Click Edit button and click the Add button in the permissions dialog box.
4.  Click Oject Types and select Computers if not already done and click OK.
5.  In the dialog "Enter the object names to select" provide the name of Hyper-V host machine and click Check Names.
6.  With the Hyper-V host machine name select, click Allow by "Full control" and click OK.

Updating the share level permissions:

1.  On the destination server, Right-click on the shared folder and select Properties.
2.  Select the Sharing tab.
3.  Click Advanced Sharing...
4.  On the Advanced Sharing dialog, click Permissions  and then Add.

5. Click Oject Types and select Computers if not already done and click OK.
6.  In the dialog "Enter the object names to select" provide the name of Hyper-V host machine and click
Check Names.
7.  With the Hyper-V host machine name select, click Allow by "Full control" and click OK.

Hyper-V Import Wizard: Choose Import Type?

Running WINSERVER2k12 RC Build 8400

General question I can't find an answer to:

When Import a VM via Hyper-V Manager GUI, after the VM folder is located and the VM is selected, at step 3 I am asked to "Choose Import Type" and I have three options to choose from:
•Register the VM in-place
•Restore the VM
•Copy the VM

Can anyone please explain to me the difference between  the options?

Thanks!

KB2920189 fails to install on generation 2 vm's

It looks like there is a problem with the KB2920189 update.

When trying to install it via Windows Update on some servers, they all fails the installation of this update - they are all running 2012 R2 inside generation 2 Hyper-V machines.

Has this update been tested with the UEFI implementation inside Hyper-V?

How to obtain target WWN for a LUN On Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V with Fibre Channel SAN

$

I have a large collection of Hyper-V hosts for which I would like to retrieve the target WNN and LUN ID for the LUNs visible on each host.  By target WWN I mean the storage array's WWN.

I have tried using the root\wmi namespace to retrieve MS_SMHBA_PORT_LUN instances, but I get 0 instances back.

I get instances of MSFC_FibrePortHBAAttributes back, but those only tell me the local host's HBA WWN, not the target information.

This information must be stored somewhere, because you can't access the LUN without it, I hope there is a way to retrieve it.  Is there?  Or is it write only during LUN setup?

HyperV 2012 R2 Replica question

Hello,

We have 2 HyperV 2012R2 Servers. Each of them, for load balancing, runs different VMs. Can we set them to replicate to each other their VMs?

If so, what shall we consider?

Is possible to open and attach virtual disk of running VM ?

Hello,

I am trying to find how to open and attach virtual disk of running VM for our utility which needs to read content of disk. I tried to open it with VIRTUAL_DISK_ACCESS_ATTACH_RO but it returns error 32. So it seems that disk is used exclusively and not possible to open and attach when VM is started ?

VM cannot connect to it's host

I am running a 8 node Hyper-V Failover Cluster.
The cluster has a management interface, a VM LAN virtual switch (not shared with management OS) and a iSCSI and two DMZ virtual switches.

The SCVMM server is also a VM running on this cluster.

The general problem is that a VM on a host cannot reach the host, and vice versa. Ping, WinRM for example.
This also means that SCVMM always has a not responding host. The one where it's VM is on at that moment.

The VLAN tags used is the same for the management interface and the VM's using the VM LAN virtual switch.
We set the VLAN ID for a VM in the VM's settings, and the VLAN ID for the management interface is set in the team properties.

The NIC is a QLogic QLE3242 with four VNICs per physical port. There is a team consisting of one VNIC of each physical port.
The management team is tagged to a specific VLAN ID. The VM LAN team is untagged since we do that in the VM settings.

All QLE3242's in the nodes are connected to a Cisco Nexus 5200 switch each, which is one logical swtich.
The switch is transparent. No VLAN tagging done there at all.

Could the VLAN tagging on the team be a problem? Meaning, would setting the VLAN ID on with Set-NetAdapter be better/wiser? And more importantly, resolve my issue?

Hyper-V 2012: Backup fails with "The number of volumes reverted does not match the number of volumes in the snapshot set for virtual machine"

Hi Everyone,

I've recently P2V'd two Dell servers running Server 2003 R2 to a Hyper-V 2012 box. The configuration of the each server is very similar, each one now having one virtualised disk containing 3 partitions - Dell Utility, Windows, Data. I do a daily backup of the Hyper-V host including the online VMs. One server backs up fine with no issues. However the other server gives me the following error at the beginning of the backup:

Log Name:      Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS-Admin

The number of volumes reverted does not match the number of volumes in the snapshot set for virtual machine 'SAPServer' (Virtual machine ID C905ECC8-B247-42D7-B986-F5F97FD87B3B).

I don't see any event log errors in the guest vm at this time

I've searched for solutions and most refer to Server 2008 resolving the above with hotfixes, rollups etc. The only one that could possibly be applicable is maybe kb975695 which refers to a disk signature clash. (Sorry- can't post link until my account is verified!). I tried the resolution here but to no avail. I can also successfully mount the vhdx when the vm is offline with no issues.

As an interim measure I decided to do an in-vm backup to a passthough USB drive connect to the above problem vm.

The really curious part is the Hyper-V backup of the online VMs works OK and gives no error when the passthrough disk is attached. So obviously changing the drive configuration seems to do something.

Any ideas ???

Deisceart

While trying to create a snapshot of any of my VM's I am getting an error.

Not enough memory error in Hyper-V

have got and error tring to run Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 r2. I have 2 gb of RAM and it says it is not enough memory. I used this official advice for Windows 8.1, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2911380 , refused. In the it says, actualy, about DWORD that is 32 bit. I looked again in Regedit, the MemoryReserve value was gone. So I took my chances and create a QWORD (64 bit) value with the same name, and it worked. Unfortunaly, I had to reinstall the OS and it does work. Tried thoose things several times, deleted and re-added all thoose values. Now I am confused, I wonder if there is any way to make Hyper-V to work?

Unable to create a VM from Disk2VHD image - 2008 R2

Hi,

I have created a VHD using Disk2VHD tool and it is unable to boot. I have attached the VHD to new virtual machine and VM is keep getting the start-up repair wizard. When the VM booted for first time it displays a error mentioning that C:\Windows is corrupted and need to run chkdsk.

I have run chkdsk /f option and it has corrected few errors. but the issue remains as it is. Further, I have run following commands from command prompt when the VM is booted from Windows server 2008 R2 DVD.

bootrec/fixmbr

bootrec/fixboot

bootrec/scanos - total identified windows installations: 0

bootrec/rebuildbcd - total identified windows installations: 0

nothing worked for me and I tried using hyper-v 2.0 and 3.0 as well. same issue appear every time.

another thing I have noticed is that the physical servers doesn't show a "System Reserved" partition when creating the VHD image. So, the VHD has only the C: partition.

Could anyone give me a solution for this...??

Thisaru Perera.

Hyper V + Sofs on same machine

Hey guys.

Last week i saw a presentation over Sofs and Hyper V Clustering.

My thoughts are now, is it supported to run a sofs and hyperv-cluster on the same Hardware?

I have 2 Host Systems which are connected to an iSCSI storage and i was thinking about to use sofs instead of using the iscsi luns for the HyperV Cluster.

What do you guys think?

Hyper-v Cluster and new AD organisation.

Hello everyone.

We have a very very bad situation.

In one of our new customers we get the following configuraion.

Organisations AD was corrupted and lost

there are Hyper-v nodes WinSrv2012 in failover cluster hosted on  8x HP c7000 blade system

there is HP P2000 datastore 49.5 Tb full size.

there isn't VMM (please don't ask me "Why"

2 CSV volumes pesented to cluster (i suppose via Failover cluster services)

And the worst thing we actually don't have any backups. I suppose previous local administrators were irresponsible.

So we have the following behavior of system

We don't able to move Virtual machines between nodes even manually.
DAtastore is full. We cannot create  new LUN because All disks are used.
There are too many critical VM's which couldn't be stopped for a long time.

I have new AD but i can not rejoin nodes to the new domain because almost all node contain critical machines and as i told i can not move ones to another node as well. Also i cannot do it because in this case moved node will deleted from Failover cluster so in this case i can damage csv volumes.
Actually i can turn off each VM for a little time.

So i have a question. What is the best solution in this situation. can i use for migrate all hyper-v infrastructure to new AD but keep all most part VHD's in place.

Sorry for my EN. And Thank you in advance.

Guest backup failed with Exchange 2010 DAG (on Windows 2008 R2 SP1) on Hyper-V 2012 R2 Failover Cluster with DPM 2012 R2 UR2

Hello all,

We cannot backup our Exchange 2010 SP3 DAG on Hyper-V 2012 R2 using DPM 2012 R2 UR2 (guest backup was previously working with DPM 2012 Sp1 and Exchange 2010 SP3 DAG on Hyper-V 2008 R2 Sp1).

We have tried to disable ODX feature but did not resolve the problem.

How do I recover my VM's from a readable HDD who's O/S has failed?

$

We've had the O/S fail on the hard drive that contains several Hyper-v virtual machines.  The drive was still readable - just not bootable.  After several attempts to install a new copy of Windows Server 2008 r2 on the same drive, I've given up and installed a new HDD and installed the O/S on that.

Everything is working fine, all I now need to do is get the virtual machines up and going again.  I assumed that all I needed to do was copy the .vhd and .avhd files to the new HDD and import them into a new VM on the new HDD.

I've tried doing this, but I get an error message that says "Import failed.  Unable to find virtual machine import files..."  Is there any way around my dilemma?
