powershell commands for VM backups in 2012 vs 2008

$

I have a powershell routine that is used by task scheduler that will shut down one or more Hyper-v VMs from a list, create a backup of the VHD file(s) then restart the VM(s).  It works great in 2008 but when I copied it over to a 2012 host, it didn't do anything.  I was wondering if powershell commands from 2008 still work in 2012 or if they've been completely rewritten.  If they are the same, then I'll assume "operator error" and keep trying.  If they have changed, then I know that I'll be spending my week googling around for how to use the new commands.  Thanks.

Server 2012 Clustered Hosts - How can I place a Hyper-V Guest in the DMZ?

I have 3 server 2012 hyper v clustered hosts. I've been recently asked to create a VM where external parties will have local admin rights. I've been resisting things for a variety of IMO valid security reasons. What I'm trying to understand is if it would be possible to build a guest VM that was not part of our domain and put in our firewalls DMZ zone. In this way these folks could be local admins but there's be no connection with the internal network.

In a single host environment if I'm understand things correctly I'd create a external type virtual switch, connect it to a specific physical network card on my host and then connect that card to my switch's DMZ port. But my environment is clustered... does that mean I'd designate a physical network card on all 3 hosts, connect them to all the same named external virtual switch and plug all 3 in to DMZ ports on my firewall? Could I also instead of plugging all 3 in to DMZ ports on my firewall plug all 3 into some little rinky dink 4 port gigabit switch and then plug that in to my firewall's dmz port?

Physical Host is a brand new Windows 2012 R2 with hyper-v role, VM is a Windows Server 2012

I try to upgrade the integration services update, VM become unresponsive and I lost connection to it,  had to turn it off, afterwards it wouldn't boot.

Tried F8 on the reboot and then switched to the command prompt to manually upgrade the integration services running the setup, but got an error (Error code: 50 )

VM halts in the middle of booting up.

saying: Please wait ...

Anyone has any idea why it happened and how to fix this?

SAN Switch?

I'm brand new to Hyper-V, so please forgive me.

I'm trying to share disks for a cluster in Hyper-V. I see the Virtual SAN Switch button and sort of assumed I could create a fully virtual SAN Fabric and connect those to fully virtual HBA's on each guest. I think I'm wrong and need some guidance.

Do I need a physical (real) SAN Switch to do this? If so, how can i share disks using Hyper-V and not investing in hardware?

Thanks for any guidance!

No data for many RemoteFX counters

I have managed to get my Hyper-V 2012 r2 server to attach a GPU to a Windows 8.1 Enterprise eval VM. I can see the remotefx gpu in the device manager, and the event log seems to indicate remote FX is being used. However, none of the RemoteFx Graphics counters on the vm have any data, and this limits my ability to see why my performance is more sluggish than I expect. Also, on the hyper-v server, counters like the capture rate and compression ratio show 0 always. Is that expected? What could I be doing incorrectly?

Hi Team,

I have to design Six Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-v Cluster . Each Host is carrying Two network Ports of 1 GBPS.

10 to 12 Vlan will be configured across virtual machine on all six host.

please let me know how best i can utilize two network port to achive redundancy and speed and network isolation.

can i team two network ports into single team and than single virtual switch will carry for MGMT,Heartbeat and 10-12 VLAn traffic. is there any downside of it since i am merging all traffics on single tea.

Thanks in advance

Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Replica fails with 'operation not supported'

$

I have a VM I am attempting to replicate from Hypervisor in Server 2012 R2 to a Hyper-V replica server running Server 2012 R2, and when I attempt to do this it fails with a generic error message of:

"Enabling Replication Failed.

Adding replication settings of '<servername>' failed.

The operation is not supported."

I am replicating every other VM to this server (50+) so its not a configuration issue, and I am doing this over port 80 so its not a cert issue. I cant find anything in the event logs of the hypervisor when I initiate the replication, or on the replica server. This VM does have an ISCI binding, but the error message doesn't seem to relate to this. I read here where some folks are talking about specific messages around failed ISCI disks, which is not what I'm getting. They suggested disabling the Backup and data integration services, which I cannot do as pausing the VM is not an option. So I guess my question is twofold, is this related to ISCSI, and if so is there a way to setup Hyper-V replica without disabling backup and data integration? If it isnt related to ISCSI, what can I do to try and troubleshoot this?

No internet access on virtual servers

Server 2012 R2 Virtual server.

HP DL360p Gen 8 Server

Fully updated driver for hardware.

I have created a Virtual switch in Hyper-v and then attached it to the virtual machine network adapter. I have full network access to all resources on the LAN. I However can not get out the gateway to the internet for anything. I have gone through my firewall and on the firewall on the host and client machines. Nothing. I have setup and remove every type of Virtual Switch there to see if something would click. Set both static and dynamic ip's on all of the network adapters and virtual adapters. Still no internet access.

If anybody has any ideas I would greatly appreciate them.

[Forum FAQ] How to implement Hyper-V replica in Workgroup environment

$
0
0

When we are in workgroup and want to use hyper-v replica between two hyper-v hosts, we can use certificate-based authentication to achieve hyper-v replica.

Here is the guide about how to implement this.

Lab environment

  • Hyper-V Host 1 (Test005): 192.168.0.5/24
  • Hyper-V Host 2 (Test010): 192.168.0.10/24

1. Configure DNS suffix (test.com) for both machines (Figure 1 and Figure 2).

Figure 1: Configure DNS suffix for Test005

Figure 2: Configure DNS suffix for Test010

2. Download the makecert.exe to create self-signed certificates for both machines.

How to get makecert.exe:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/kingstonhui/archive/2013/12/24/where-is-makecert-exe-updated-answer-for-2013.aspx

Reference:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa386968.aspx

You can copy the makecert.exe to C:\, and then open an elevated command prompt on both machines.

On Hyper-V Host 1 (Test005):

a) Run the following command to create a self-signed root certificate.

makecert -pe -n "cn=PrimaryTestRootCA" -ss root -sr localmachine -sky signature -r "PrimaryTestRootCA.cer"

b) Run the following command to create a certificate signed by root certificate of Test005.

makecert -pe -n "cn=test005.test.com" -ss my -sr localmachine -sky exchange -eku 1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1,1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.2 -in "PrimaryTestRootCA" -is root -ir localmachine -sp "Microsoft RSA SChannel Cryptographic Provider" -sy 12 PrimaryTestCert.cer

Figure 3: Commands on Test005

On Hyper-V Host 2 (Test010):

a) Run the following command to create a self-signed root certificate on Test010.

makecert -pe -n "cn=RecoveryTestRootCA" -ss root -sr localmachine -sky signature -r "RecoveryTestRootCA.cer"

b) Run the following command to create a certificate signed by root certificate of Test010.

makecert -pe -n "cn=test010.test.com" -ss my -sr localmachine -sky exchange -eku 1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1,1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.2 -in "RecoveryTestRootCA" -is root -ir localmachine -sp "Microsoft RSA SChannel Cryptographic Provider" -sy 12 RecoveryTestCert.cer

Figure 4: Commands on Test010

After running the commands, there will be two certificate files on each host in the same location as the makecert.exe file. Please copy the PrimaryTestRootCA.cer from Test005 to Test010, and then import it. Do the same for Test005.

How to import certificate:

Open mmc -> file -> Add/Remove Snap-in... -> Select Certificates in Available snap-ins -> click Add -> Computer account -> Local computer --> Finish --> OK -> Console Root -> Expand Certificates (local computer) -> Trusted Root Certification Authorities -> Right click Certificates -> All Tasks -> Import... -> Next -> Select the certificate file -> Click next to Finish.

Please note, by default, a certificate revocation check is mandatory and Self-Signed Certificates don’t support Revocation checks.

Please modify registry key valueDisableCertRevocationCheck to 1 to disable it:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Virtualization\Replication\

3. To resolve each other correctly, we need to add IP and FQDN of each other to the hosts file (%systemroot%\System32\drivers\etc).

Figure 5: Modify HOSTS file on Test005

Figure 6: Modify HOSTS file on Test010

4. Enable the firewall rule of hyper-v replica Https Listener on both machines (Figure 7).

Figure 7: Enable the firewall rule

5. Add the windows credential for each other.

Open Control panel\User accounts\Credential manager\Windows credentials, click “Add a Windows Credential”

After the steps above, you can enable the Hyper-V Replica via right clicking on one VM you want to replica in Hyper-V Manager, then choose enable replication and finish the wizard.

Furthermore, you can change the hosts file to specify the replica traffic on your preferred NIC.

If you need further assistance, welcome to post questions in the Hyper-V forum.

2012 R2 logical switch VMQ

Hey,

We are trying to set the correct settings for VMQ on 2012 R2 on our physical servers.

Switch settings, Independent mode, Dynamic.

CPU, HT 2x12, lp 48.

Receive queues is 15 per port, 2x10GB.

Per default it sets to base 0, max 16. This seems to work fine except that it reports alot of errors in the event logg as we are not using the correct settings for sum queue mode.

All settings with baseprocessornumber 0 seems to work fine, but on the second port if we set it correct to not overlapp it doesnt work.

Any suggestions?

Intel I350 SR-IOV Suddenly Stopped Working While Hyper-V Still Not Reporting as Network as Degraded

After working for almost a year without issues, SR-IOV functionality suddenly quit working. The NIC is an Intel I350-T4 and the OS is Windows Server 2012 R2.

Looking at the event logs in the parent, here's an example of the message indicating failure:

I've looked at John Howard's detailed, "Everything you wanted to know about SR-IOV in Hyper-V" series and followed the steps in part 8 (http://blogs.technet.com/b/jhoward/archive/2012/03/21/everything-you-wanted-to-know-about-sr-iov-in-hyper-v-part-8.aspx) to see if that would lead me to the resolution. Unfortunately, most of the error conditions that he mentions are paired with a 'Degraded' status and status messages with suggested reasons.

Unfortunately, the network connections in my case are listed as 'OK', and so I'm not sure where to go next to find out what changed and why SR-IOV is enabled on the NIC, virtual switch, and virtual NIC... and yet still not functional and not reporting as degraded.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Paul

Copying files very slow between VM Server 2012 and 2008

Hello to all,
I have a very strange problem, the scenario is this:
1. Server 2012 Hyper-V
2. No. 14 V.M. Windows Server 2008 R2

All MV accessing the hard disk of the server 2012 via an internal network card with no bandwidth limit.
Only 2 MV have a very slow file transfer.
If I try the reverse, copy files from 2012 to 2008, the operation is fast
MV on all firewalls are disabled and there is no antivirus installed.

Obviously the server is in production and not a lot of possibility to maneuver.
Thanks in advance

Hi!

I'm trying to install Windows Server 2012 R2 as a Gen. 2 VM on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Whenever I get the Windows installation to load I see this screen: Already tried multiple installation sources but I get the same result every time.

If I try a Win 8 iso the VM doesn't even react to "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD"

Secure boot is disabled.

Please let me know if you need any additional information

I'll be very grateful if someone could help.
