Hyper-V - Size of root differencing disk changed

I'm trying to use the vhdtool.exe /repair , but nothing happens. 2008 R2. And yes I tried to expand with a snapshoot, so now I'm hoping for this tool to save me.

I have placed the vhdtool.exe file under same folder as the vhd and ahvd files, and run the cmd as admin from the same place as vhd fils are. And I expect that the < and > and the [ ] shall be left out when typing the file name and "repair" and that the avh and avhd shall be included in the file name.

I think the reason for nothing happens is that the filenames have a space in them. That's the only reason I can think about. There is no error message. It just list the options for the vhd-tool.

So my question is, can I rename my vhd and avhd files by using file mangaer ?

Or can I delete the snapshot the propper way, (not using file manager), and then hope for that the virtual machine will start ?

I expect by deleting the snapshot I will loose all changes (in that machine) since from the date the snapshoot was created ?

Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Failover Cluster Networking Question

I am little confused over how to setup the cluster to accommodate different VLANs inside the Cluster hosts.  I have 4 NICs.  I also want to separate traffic through VLANs for intracluster communication, live migration, virtualization, External, Perimeter, etc.

How can this be achieved?

Will it work by forming two teams out of 4 nics and distributing different vlans among them? if so, would appreciate if someone could share the steps.

also, what changes would be required on the network end.  Thanks.

Hello All,

When a raw LUN is added as a CSV disk in Failover CLuster manager, does it require format ? If not, how is it managed by the disk system?

unable to connect copied vhd files to VM Hyper-v high availability cluster.

Hi

I have my VMs VHD files stored on my SAN  and I have a copied one of the LUNs containing a vhd file which I have then exported to the shared storage of the hyper-V cluster which is just like and other VHD. The problem comes when trying to connect this copied vhd to the VM which still uses the original VHD . The system refuses reporting that it cannot add the same disk twice..

These are two different VHD files

I have: renamed the new file, changed the disk ID, changed the volume id and using vbox (because it was the only way I could find do it ) changed the uuid of the vhd file.  But still no joy.

I can connect the volume to any other VM without any issues, but I need to be able to connect it to the same VM..

I'm not sure how  Hyper-v is comparing the two VHD files but I need to know so I can I can connect the copy VHD without having to copy all its contents to a new VHD which is impractical..

Anyone got any ideas or a procedure??

Poor network performance on Windows 8.1 virtual machines

We experience a strange behavior. A 10 node Hyper-V host cluster. Dell Blades. Broadcom NIC's.

When we do a file copy from or to a VM hosted on the cluster and running Windows 8.1 the throughput is terrible0-3 Mb/s. When we do exact the same on a Windows 7 VM, the throughput is500MB/s. (Yes MegaBytes!). I've read through all sorts of documentation about VMQ (Virtual Machine Queue) and have confirmed thatthis feature is disabled on the network interfaces. Next step is to update the hyper-v host NIC drivers with the latest release from Broadcom.

The thing is I cannot explain why this is slow on Windows 8.1 and fast on Windows 7 (or server 2012). Has someone come across this issue. Any advice would be appreciated.

Cannot Remotely Import VM from SMB Share

$

Let me start by saying, I've followed just about every guide I can find on delegation and permissions and virtually everything works just fine except for this...

I created a VM using Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V. That server was created on, stored on and exported to a Server 2012 R2 File Server, all using my workstation (Windows 8.1) to remotely manage the Hyper-V server. That should be proof that delegation works perfectly fine (being able to create a VM and export it on the SMB share remotely, right?)

My user account, workstation computer account, and the Hyper-V server account all have full rights to the SMB share (NTFS and Share Permissions). To clarify further, my user account is a domain admin.

However, when I go to import the exact same machine that I JUST exported successfully I get the error: Hyper-V did not find virtual machines to import from location '\\FS01\Hyper-V\Exports\Server2012R2\' - The folder '\\FS01\Hyper-V\Exports\Server2012R2\' could not be found. You might not have permission to access it.

Here are some outputs to show that I've, hopefully, configured everything correctly:

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-SmbDelegation FS01
WS
HV02
PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-SmbDelegation HV02
WS

WS:
Get-WSManCredSSP
The machine is configured to allow delegating fresh credentials to the following target(s): wsman/*.domain.local

HV02:
Invoke-Command -ComputerName HV02 -ScriptBlock {Get-WSManCredSSP}
The machine is configured to allow delegating fresh credentials to the following target(s): wsman/FS01.domain.local

This computer is configured to receive credentials from a remote client computer.

FS01:
Invoke-Command -ComputerName FS01 -ScriptBlock {Get-WSManCredSSP}
The machine is not configured to allow delegating fresh credentials.
This computer is configured to receive credentials from a remote client computer.

I should also not that it works fine if I remote desktop to the HV02 server and do the import.

Error creating virtual machine (Client Hyper-V, Win 8 Pro)

I'm using an AlienWare M14 machine. I tried to create a virtual machine locally using Client Hyper-V on Windows 8 Pro, but it still doesn't work (took me a lot of time). I added the Hyper-V features in "Turn windows feature on or off", and all of the requirements to run Hyper-V are fulfilled (SLAT, BIOS, 64 bits, ...) (I attach the msinfo32 output in this post). At the last step in creating a virtual machine, it says "... The system cannot find the path specified... (0x80070003)" (for details, check my attached image). I googled, tried some solutions but still no luck so far.

Thanks for any help.

Hello all

We configured one Windows 2012 Datacenter core with 64 GB RAM and teh server has 12 cores (2 CPU X 6 core). Four virtual servers are required to be configured with 3 cores & 16 GB of RAM for each (dedicated cores and memory for each Virtual server). For the host server how much memory & core is required, how we can calclulate the requirements

Thanks in advance

Hyper-V Multi Node deployment question

Hi Folks

we are working on a HyperV cluster ( 5 nodes + SaS Storage) based on 2012 R2 .

I have  a lot of experience with VMware but not much with Hyper-V .

in a nutshell ; I know that we need to deploy MS Cluster and HyperV roles . here is a couple of questions ; they are generic :

1- I know it's possible to start the cluster and then install VMM later ; however I prefer to avoid any re-configuration
, also in one tech-net article I saw a note saying that If I want to use VMM later ; I should configure all network requirements
through VMM ... so I am a bit confused ; do we need VMM to be there before forming the cluster and set up all networks or
it's better to have VMM in-place and do configuration through that ?

2- I saw in TechNet where you can even send cluster traffic through virtual switch .. this doesn't make sense to me as I am under impression that fail-over cluster is a separate service and it's outside hyper-v ; so how come it's using a virtual switch for heart-beat ?

here is the article : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn550728.aspx

Hyper-V Virtual Machine Uptime reset to zero after recovery point taken

$

I am seeing a Virtual Machines Uptime, as reported by the Hyper-V Manager, being reset to zero after a recovery point is taken.  Can anybody explain this?

NOTE: Internally the guest VM still shows the correct Uptime. This confirms that the VM has not actually rebooted. Also that the VM is still operational while the recovery point is being taken, hence the Uptime is not being reset due to a VM save.

Dynamic MAC Duplication - Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Cluster

$

We ran into a problem with duplicate dynamic MACs in our 2008 R2 Hyper-V cluster. We restarted a server and when it came up, it had a MAC that another VM had on another Hyper-v host in the cluster. To get out of the problem, I shut the machine down and assigned the machine a static MAC.

After further reading, it appears that I probably should have just restarted the machine and let it pick up a new dynamic MAC from the pool on the Hyper-V host where it resided. It still makes me wonder why another machine had the same dynamically assigned MAC and neither of the VMs wanted to change.

Has anyone struggled with this before?

Cisco MDS Zoning for Hyper-V 2012 R2

$

Hello everyone,

I've been trying to research this, but perhaps I'm typing in my search criteria wrong. I am currently running VMware 5.5 for most of our servers in the shop. However, we are wanting to convert some machine over to Hyper-V 2012 R2. Probably about 25. They will be on three HP DL360's tied into a Cisco MDS fiber switch, which then ties into an EMC VNXe. I've been researching this for a while and have a lab up and running, but only using ISCSI and SMB.

Do you configure all of your Hyper-V hosts for shared storage on the SAN as you would do in VMware? E.g. Zoning all servers to see they same storage via the MDS to the EMC. I don't plan on booting from SAN. I would just like to access my datastores or LUNS as I do in VMware. However, if I am thinking correctly, only the Quorum drive for the cluster would not be a pass-through disk. The pass-through disks would be created for all the Hyper-V hosts on the SAN to see?

Thanks

Hyper V 2012 Backup - best practice

$

I'm setting up a new Hyper-V server 2012 and I'm trying to understand how to best configure it for backups and restores usingWindows Server Backup. I´ve 5 VMs running, everyone has their one iScsi drive.

I would like to backup the VMs on a external usb disk. I´ve the choice to backup the Hyper-V using child partition snapshot or to backup the vm folder with the config and the vhd files (is is right, that Windows override the old backup ?)

What´s the difference between the two methods ?  Is incremental back possible with vm´s ?

thanks

Using VHDX, generation 2, and GPT disk partition - Any problems?

$

I have been looking through the forum and Microsoft documentation trying to determine if the VM configuration is best practice or will crash?

I am using Windows server 2012 R2 Hyper-V as the host and the disk is configured as a Gpt disk and using eufi to boot.

I have set up a new virtual machine using generation 2 and a VHDX file.  I installed Windows server 2012 R2 into the VM.  I was having problems with the install and it continuously returned to the Server Install window.  So I got to a command prompt and ran diskpart and did a list disk. My disk 0 did not have a * under the Gpt column. Therefore, I decided convert the VHDX disk to Gpt.  I was then able to load the OS (Server 2012 R2).

I have never done a VHDX this way and was wondering if anyone has any experience with this type of vhdx disk configuration?

Was there any problems?

Or if anyone has any comments or can point me to any documentation that I should have read, I would be grateful.

Hyper-V 2012 Networking Question

$

Dear All,

I need to setup a hyper-v failover cluster, but I am stuck at how to setup the networking part of it.  All servers have Four-4 NICs.  Following is desirable:

Team (2 NICS) for Cluster/Heartbeat/Live Migration/CSV/I/O

Team (2 NICS) Virtual Machines with different VLANs

How to achieved such a configuration?

What changes are required on the network switch?

What changes are required on the physical NICs on servers?

What changes are required on the teamed adapters?

Is creating two-2 teams; and using the second team for Virtual Switches and assigning VLAN IDs a solution?

Would I be needing to create multiple external virtual switches for all the VLANs?

thanks in advance.

hyper-v manager in windows 8.1 cannot connect to hyper-v server. RPC server unavailable

I am setting up a new server. I installed Hyper-V 2012 R2 on it and want to manage it remotely with Hyper-V manager from a Windows 8.1 computer. I am unable to communicate with the computer with the server. Hyper-V manager gives me the following error: RPC Server Unavailable. Unable to establish communication between "the hypervserver" and "the W8.1station". Both computer are located in the same subnet and both are on the same domain.

I configured the server with a fixed IP, DNS, to accept pings, connected it to the domain and set it up to allow remote access and management. Although I do not think it is necessary, I added my domain account to the administrators group in the hyper-V server. I can perfectly ping the server and remote into the server from the W8.1 station. From he server I can also ping the W8.1 station as well as exterior websites (DNS functionality is ok).

I have play with the firewall in both, the Hyper-V server and the management station and have not being able to get them to communicate. Blaming the Hyper-V server for all this and the great time that I have already spent on this problem, I borrowed a Windos 7 Pro computer, installed RSAT and enabled the Hyper-V manager in that computer. Launched the manager AND CONNECTED TO THE HYPER-V SERVER WITH NO PROBLEMS AT ALL !!!!!!!

I have read a lot already about this but most people having this issue are setting up servers in a workgroup environment, and almost nobody is using Windows 8.1 as the management station. Can someone PLEASE give me a hand with this problem??

Thanks to you all !!!

2012 R2 logical switch VMQ

Hey,

We are trying to set the correct settings for VMQ on 2012 R2 on our physical servers.

Switch settings, Independent mode, Dynamic.

CPU, HT 2x12, lp 48.

Receive queues is 15 per port, 2x10GB.

Per default it sets to base 0, max 16. This seems to work fine except that it reports alot of errors in the event logg as we are not using the correct settings for sum queue mode.

All settings with baseprocessornumber 0 seems to work fine, but on the second port if we set it correct to not overlapp it doesnt work.

Any suggestions?
