HYPER V 2012 R2

I have installed hyper v 2012 R2 on a dell r720XD, When my laptop is connected to the same router I can manage everything. I have a static IP connected to it.

But when I am at home or somewhere, I want to connect to it and manage it. I am simulating a situation since we are sending it to a colo location. NO VPN just a public IP.

At home I can not access disk management and the hyper v manager from my windows 8.

I can do RDP, access services, use mmc for firewall but not disk management and hyper v manager.

I modified the host to list the IP address of the server and the name.

I did the cmdkey, server, name, password

I did the

set-item wsman:\localhost\Client\TrustedHosts -value * -concatenate -force

I did the edit limits allow anonymous logon,

i did these

netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Remote Administration” new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”File and Printer Sharing” new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Remote Service Management” new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Performance Logs and Alerts” new enable=yes
Netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Remote Event Log Management” new enable=yes
Netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Remote Scheduled Tasks Management” new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Remote Volume Management” new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Remote Desktop” new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Windows Firewall Remote Management” new enable =yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”windows management instrumentation (wmi)” new enable =yes
 net start vds

Is there a setting I missed so I can fully manage my server from another location?

Help with new hyper V High Avaliability setup and SMB 3.0 storage

$

Hi everyone , this is my first time posting here so please be gentle.

I am looking at building an new 2012 R2 with Hyper V setup , everything has to be HP hardware .

2x HyperV 2012 R2 servers running 20-30 VMs . These will be dual 6 core xeons with 128gb of ram

2x 2012 R2 back end storage servers running SMB 3.0 shares , connected to the front end VM servers with multiple 10gb ethernet connections. Not sure on the hardware requirements for these servers so advice helpful .

2x SAS 6gb external enclosure for each storage server . Probably HP d2600 enclosures

A couple of questions :

What is the best way to achieve high availability and redundancy in this setup ? Should I use replica's or a HV cluster ?

What is the best way to ensure redundancy of the storage back ends ? File share clustering?

Would the performance of the SAS enclosure be fast enough ? What kind of drives would be suitable for this? Would 7.2k SAS drives be enough or would we need faster ? What would be the best raid setup ? Initially there would be 12 drives expanding to 24 . Would a mix of fast SAS or SSD and SATA be more efficient ?

thanks in advance , any help appreciated

I am getting this errorerror migrating a vm from server 2012 r2 to server 2012

I successfully live migrated this same vm from 2012 to 2012r2.
I then added a 10Gig Nic (intel x540)to the server 2012 hyperv host, changed the vswitches accordingly, and tried to move the VM back.

Hi there!

I'm using 2008 R2 and tried to get Hyper-V working on it.

When I try to add a new virtual machine, I get folllowing errors:
The operation failed.
failed to delete configuration: The proccess cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

Then I see an empty VM on my list with default settings.

Importing a VM I get following Error:
Import Failed
General Access Denied Error 0x80070005

I check permissions, uninstalled and reinstalled hyper-V, checked forums, but couldnt find anything :(

Hope somebody has a hint for me..

very slow connection to VM from Hyper-V manager on Windows 8

windows 8;   Client Hyper-V enabled;   added Hyper-V host (server 2012)

Take a long time to connect to VM.

Another bad symptom: when open HV Manager, local host appears immediately but added previously Host appears after delay.

Didn't see this problem on W7. Firewall is disabled. Have Trend Micro AV installed. But the problem appeared before AV install. And theoretically should be no conflict between Windows Defender and installed AV.

Any idea?

Thanks,

Michael.

Hyper V guest slow disk access

I have a Hyper V cluster(2012) with a 2012 guest running 2012 acting as my file server.

My 2 hosts are connected to a gig switch stack which in turn is connected to my Dell MD3200i.

My file server has a "data" disk that is a VHD(fixed) on the iSCSI storage. As is it OS(dynamic)

I'm coping 200GB right now and only seeing data thoughtput of 8MB/sec.

When I check perfrmance on the file server the disk queue is huge. But when I check the queue for C: on the host, which is where the cluster storage appears to sit, its got a low if not no queue.

Also did a copy using the host and saw 58MB/sec so I'm happy the network should be able to pass the data.

Switch CPU is at 5%

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Error 0x80070490 trying to launch VM without SCVMM on Windows 2008 Server R2

Hello everybody,

I get a weird issue trying to launch a VM.

This is the current situation : I get a server, Windows 2008 R2. I've only install Hyper-V and Failover Cluster. I can create a VM but when I try to launch it, I get an error message into a popup (translated from french) : "The application encountered an error during modification of 'vm_name' state". "'vm_name' could not be initialize". "Could not initialize machine remoting system. Error 'Element not found'. (0x80070490). "Could not find a usable certificate. Error: 'Element not found'. (0x80070490)."

So, I'm unable to launch my vm's.

I'm not using SCVMM yet. I want to resolve this issue before.

I read some articles and posts about SCVMM certificate issue but I'm not using SCVMM.
More fun, I read articles about this issue but on Windows 2008 Server (not R2) : problem resolved by a fix, unapplicable on my Windows 2008 R2 :)

I'm totalyblocked and ain't got no idea how I can resolve it.

If someone gets I idea ...

Cheers,

Nicolas

Can't RDP into 2012 R2 across VPN

I can RDP into a Hyper-V 2012 R2 server across the local LAN with no problem.

However I'm getting a black screen and timeout disconnect when trying to RDP into the same server across Hamachi VPN. The clients connects and I can authenticate. The active LAN session is terminated after authentication, but the session never fully loads at the remote client.

Inbound firewall rules are identical; outbound rules are set to Allow. In fact I disabled the firewall completely on Server5, but didn't see any improvement.

Here's the basic summary:

Server1: Hyper-V 2012

  • Workgroup mode (same workgroup)
  • Can RDP through local LAN, Win8.0 client
  • Can RDP through Hamachi VPN, Win8.1 client

Server5: Hyper-V 2012 R2

  • Workgroup mode (same workgroup)
  • Can RDP through local LAN, Win8.0 client
  • Can not RDP through Hamachi VPN, Win8.1 client

On Server5 I'm getting this Information-level entry in the Application event for the VPN connection, but not for the LAN connection:

Shared nothing live migration over SMB. Poor performance

$

Hi,

I´m experiencing really poor performance when migrating VMs between newly installed server 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts.

Hardware:
Dell M620 blades
256Gb RAM
2*8C Intel E5-2680 CPUs
Samsung 840 Pro 512Gb SSD running in Raid1
6* Intel X520 10G NICs connected to Force10 MXL enclosure switches

The NICs are using the latest drivers from Intel (18.7) and firmware version 14.5.9

The OS installation is pretty clean. Its Windows Server 2012 R2 + Dell OMSA + Dell HIT 4.6

I have removed the NIC teams and vmSwitch/vNICs to simplify the problem solving process. Now there is one nic configured with one IP. RSS is enabled, no VMQ.

The graphs are from 4 tests.
Test 1 and 2 are nttcp-tests to establish that the network is working as expected.
Test 3 is a shared nothing live migration of a live VM over SMB
Test 4 is a storage migration of the same VM when shut down. The VMs is transferred using BITS over http.

It´s obvious that the network and NICs can push a lot of data. Test 2 had a throughput of 1130MB/s (9Gb/s) using 4 threads. The disks can handle a lot more than 74MB/s, proven by test 4.

While the graph above doesn´t show the cpu load, I have verified that no cpu core was even close to running at 100% during test 3 and 4.

Any ideas?

Hyper-v 2012 r2 slow throughputs on network / live migrations

$

Hi, maybe someone can point me in the right direction, I have 10 servers 5 Dell r210s and 5 Dell R320's, I have basically converted these servers to standalone hyper-v 2012 servers, so there is no clustering on any at the moment.

Each server is configured with 2 1Gb nics teamed via a virtual switch, now when I copt files between server 1 and 2 for example I see 100MBs throughput, but if I copy a file to server 3 at the same time the file copy load splits the 100MBs throughput between the 2 copy processes. I was under the impression if I copied 2 files to 2 totally different servers the load would basically be split across the 2 nics effectively giving me 2Gbs throughput but this does not seem to be the case. I have played around with tcpip large send offloads, jumbo packets, disabled vmq on the cards, they are broadcoms. :-(  but it doesn't really seem to make a difference with all of these settings.

The other issue is If I live migrate a 12Gb vm machine running only 2gb ram, effectively just an o/s it takes between 15 to 20 minutes to migrate, I have played around with the advanced settings, smb, compression, tcpip not real game changers, BUT if I shut town the vm and migrate it, it takes, just under 3 and a half minutes to move across.

I am really stumped here, I am busy in a test phase of hyper-v but cant find any definitive documents relating to this stuff.

How to Fix a Corrupted Hyper-V VHD File

How to recover from a corrupted VHD file?

There is a tool that can recover logical problems in the VHD structure?

A friend called me and told me that his VS R2 Enterprise with 4 VMs suffered a power falure and after that, one of the VMs does not startup anymore. The erros is the same as using VHDMOUNT, something similar: "VHD file could not be mounted"

There is a CHKDSK for VHD files?

How to "rebuild" a corrupetd VHD file? How to analyze logical structure of a offline VHD file?

Hyper-V host 1Gbps NIC negotiated at 100 Mbps when used for Virtual Switch

$

0

Hi all,

Hoping someone can shed some light on this one as I’ve been trying to hunt down a solution for a week now.

Setup

  • HP ProLiant ML350 G6 with HP NC326i PCIe Dual Port Gigabit Server Adapter network adapters
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Core with only the Hyper-V role installed
  • SBS 2011 installed as guest
  • Port 1 on Dual port NIC configured a physical port or management of Host only
  • Port 2 on Dual port NIC configured for use as an External Virtual Switch port for use by guests only

The issue is that the physical port connected to the Hyper-V virtual Switch negotiates with the network switch at 100 Mbps full duplex while the management port negotiates at 1 Gbps full duplex. All clients (brand new HP Z210 workstations) also negotiate with the switch at 1 Gbps.

During file copies and backups the network port connected to the Virtual Switch does not show any errors and transfers data at close to 100 Mbps. File transfers between individual workstations and workstations and server core again show no errors, but transfers at 1 Gbps.

One observation is that the physical NIC connected to the Virtual Switch does not negotiate with the switch until the Hyper-V service has started (I’m guessing) the virtual switch.

Also, while staging the server the Hyper-V virtual switch created when the server was connected to a 100 Mbps switch not a 1Gbps switch as it is in production.

Has anyone encountered anything similar and if so how did you get the physical NIC to operate at full capabilities? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Licensing for Guests OS

Hello,

We are planning to move to Windows Server 2012 DataCanter Edition, and we are aware it suppports unlimited guests OS and it will provide us also free multiple Activation keys, what if we install Windows Server 2008 R2 edition and Windows Server 2003 R2, the  free activation keys will work with these or we need to hae  separate licenses for these versions, does it mean the free activation keys will work only on Server  2012  Edtitions alone?.

Thanks
