I can't virtualize windows 7

Hi

I have a laptop with Windows 7/server2012 (180 days trial) dual boot with a HDD of 500 GB with the following partitions

C: windows 7 100 GB

D: WS 2012 100 GB

E: STORAGE 300 GB

I used the disk2vhd to convert the 3 partitions into 1 VHD, but when I create a new VM on hyper-v to try to run this vhd, I don't get anything, just a black screen with a flickering white line at the p left side of the VM screen.

Next try I made was editing the boot manager so the laptop boots only with windows 7, I used the disk2vhd again to create the vhd and the result was the same.

Is there something I'm missing? do I need to erase the D partition with WS 2012 so I can convert the disk to vhd and virtualize it succesfully?

I hope anyone of you can help me

thanks!

What's the difference & best practice

I'm wondering the following scenario which is best to go and what's the difference.

1. Install Windows Server 2012 on VM (Hyper-V Server 2012) and create nodes / instances from Hyper-V Server.

2. Install Windows Server standalone and use the Hyper-V inside for other virtualisation purpose.

I do notice that if I go with scenario number 1, the nodes (VMs) installed on Hyper-V does not detect / support USB printer / ext HDD. Is this correct? or is there driver supporting this?

Also, what are the difference between using Hyper-V Server to create the VMs or create the VMs in Windows Server as the host machine?

Thank you.

How to recover from a corrupted VHD file?

There is a tool that can recover logical problems in the VHD structure?

A friend called me and told me that his VS R2 Enterprise with 4 VMs suffered a power falure and after that, one of the VMs does not startup anymore. The erros is the same as using VHDMOUNT, something similar: "VHD file could not be mounted"

There is a CHKDSK for VHD files?

How to "rebuild" a corrupetd VHD file? How to analyze logical structure of a offline VHD file?

Hyper-V 2012 VHDX Fixed Disk creation

I know there is a tool that creates Fixed Size VHD's quickly but I was wondering if there was a tool for creating VHDX quickly. I wanted to create a 5TB VHDX Disk but after several hours its only a small percentage of the way finished. I'd rather do fixed than dynamic but I'll do dynamic if it means I don't have to let it run for 48 hrs.

Slow VM disk performance on WS2012 Hyper-V cluster

$

Hi everybody,

I am having a pretty annoying problem with our Hyper-V Cluster. One, and only one of our VMs keeps getting into a state where disk performance is absolutely horrible (a few tens of KBps on sequential transfers). The interactive performance in a RDP is also affected.

However, as soon as I do a Live Migration to the second node in the cluster, the performance goes back up to where it should be. Live Migrating it back to the original cluster node keeps the performance up, that is until a few hours later, at most a couple of days, the performance goes back to being horrible. Apply, rinse, repeat.

In the parent partition on that cluster node, the disk performance is just fine, irregardless of what happens in the VM. No abnormal CPU usage to be seen, either in the parent, or in the VM. No particular events logged either. The Live Migration is also pretty slow when the VM is in the affected state, moving it back performs observably faster (i.e., once the problem is "reset" through live migrating it on the second node).

The cluster is WS2012, the VM is also WS2012. It only functions as a file server, no other software installed, not even an antivirus. The VM is however relatively large (4 vCPUs, 32 GB RAM, a 120 GB dynamic VHDx as a system drive, and a 24 TB dynamic VHDx as storage for the file share).

There are a few mentions online about similar problems, but no concrete tips on what could cause it. Anybody have any ideas?

VHD and VHDX won't Compact

I also have the same problem.

If I compact a VHD or VHDX the compact runs for one second and ends, and the VM's remain uncompacted.

I am using REFS format on the drive, and the VM's are Windows 7 x86, if that makes any difference.

I have disabled System Restore in VM's, as that was a known problem with 2008 R2.

Can this be reported as a bug in Server 2012 RC.

Adding Remote Users to SBS 2011

Hello,

Apologies if this is already answered elsewhere.  I just can't find anything quite like what I'm looking for.

We are running SBS 2011 on our server.  It comes with two remote desktop licences but we need more.  It now appears that I cannot add extra licences to the server as it is running SBS and I'm told that the only thing I can do is purchase Windows Server 2012 to run on a separate machine which will give me two more remote desktop licences with it, and I can purchase packs of CALs to increase the amount of RD users that I have logging in.

a) Is this correct - the cost is going to be pretty prohibitive.... or is there any other alternatives?

b) If this is correct, what version of Windows Server 2012 will I need to buy to give me the option of adding more CALs at a later date?

Many thanks to all who contribute in this forum.  Look forward to hearing from you.

settings of VMQ?

We have around 100VMs .I want to ask about an error I got in our environment recently .And i searched everywhere and a bit confused about VMQs as I got this error in HyperV Cluster hosts.

“Available processor sets of the underlying physical NICs belonging to the LBFO team NIC /DEVICE/{D2345946-C500-492B-AA6F-1DC2FF258E94} (Friendly Name: Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver) on switch 8E2B961A-4004-496D-B83B-6EFDFF639B9A (Friendly Name: ConvergedSwitch) are not configured correctly. Reason: The processor sets overlap when LBFO is configured with sum-queue mode.”

We have 4 nodes each with :

CPU:2x8 Cores=16 Cores and 32 Logical Processors.Hyper Threading enabled.

Network:2x10 Gbps

OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

One network Team :

                Teaming Mode: Switch Independent.

                Load Balancing Mode: Dynamic.

Standby adapter: None (All adapters active)

One virtual switch and two virtual NICs with the allow management OS access to the switch set to true .

What would be the recommended settings of VMQ or dVMQ ?and should I leave VMQ enabled on the virtual machines ?

Hyper-V with Windows Server Essentials in a VM - adding a second physical disk to VM - now VM will not start

Hardware previously had Windows Server Essentials 2012 running fine.

Current setup, base is Hyper-V 2012 with Windows Server Essentials in a VM, which has been installed a few weeks ago and is stable, but only on the main SSD.

I decided to try to configure so that the physical disks were available directly to WSE, hoping that the management of them would be easier.

I had one SCSI in the VM, and aside from the SSD boot disk, I was able to add 1 3TB drive, and it all works.  If I add a second 3TB drive,  the WSE VM will not start.   It tries to start, but goes back to off in a few seconds.

I then decided to put the 3TB drives on a second virtual SCSI within the VM, to see if that was better.

No change, one drive ok, but two  and the VM will not start.

Then I booted the VM with the 1 3TB drive that worked, and then while the VM was on, I was able to add 3 more 3TB drives, and the VM stayed up.  I was able to create a storage space from the 4 drives, mirrored, thin provisioned, the standard WSE 2012 settings (I kind of wish it would give you a choice on these, but...).   Everything seemed to be working fine.

But, when the VM was stopped, it will not now restart.   I suppose I have to delete the 3 extra drives, which will cause storage pool disaster I presume.

Seems odd that I can add them, and use them in WSE2012, but then it will not restart.   And they were on a separate virual SCSI controller from the "boot" drive.

Any ideas?    (or let me know if this is the wrong forum... since the VM would not start, I am blaming Hyper-V...)

Thanks!

Ross

Cannot add VM to Cluster

We have have Hyper-V 2012 Cluster with 2 Nodes that runs about 10 VMs, mostly Server 2008 R2 with a few 2012. Cluster storage is and iSCSI SAN with DSS7 from Open-e.

I have a VM that I cannot add to the Cluster.  Its Server 2012 that runs Exchange 2013 with about 50 mailboxes.   When I go to the Failover Cluster Manager the VM does not show up.  I have had no problems adding any other VMs.

I am trying to determine why I cannot add this VM to the Cluster.

Thanks,

Todd

Error creating virtual machine (Client Hyper-V, Win 8 Pro)

I'm using an AlienWare M14 machine. I tried to create a virtual machine locally using Client Hyper-V on Windows 8 Pro, but it still doesn't work (took me a lot of time). I added the Hyper-V features in "Turn windows feature on or off", and all of the requirements to run Hyper-V are fulfilled (SLAT, BIOS, 64 bits, ...) (I attach the msinfo32 output in this post). At the last step in creating a virtual machine, it says "... The system cannot find the path specified... (0x80070003)" (for details, check my attached image). I googled, tried some solutions but still no luck so far.

Thanks for any help.

VM on Hyper-V runs ver slow

We are running Hyper-V on windows 2012 R2 servers. VMs on one of 4 Dell PowerEdge servers run very slow. I have tried different OS such as windows XP and Windows 7. All have the same issue. If I move the VM to different Hyper-V host, it runs normal. If I run the VM without network, it works great. Only when I enable the network, it runs terrible slow. I thought it is network issue. I have installed the latest NIC driver. I have disable offload, but can’t fix the problem. Help please.

Hyper-V Manager - RPC Call failed

$

We have 2 Hyper-V servers that we are unable to connect to each other in Hyper-V manager.

This is the error that we got when trying to connect to the remote server:

An error occurred while attempting to connect to server "". Check that the Virtual Machine Management service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server.

When we are rebooting the servers, Hyper-V Manager is able to connect to the remote server for a certain period of time (like 1 minute) and then it disconnect and gives us that error: RPC call failed.

In event viewer, we are seeing this error:

DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer using any of the configured protocols; requested by PID     100c (C:\Windows\system32\ServerManager.exe).

We tried to change the DCOM permissions without any success.

When we are trying from another machine, we are able to connect to the server, with Hyper-V Manager. But when we are trying between these 2 machines, we got these errors.

We are using Windows Server 2012 R2.

Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V and Drivers

Hello all,

Question is regarding drivers on our Dell Systems we are deploying for use in a MSFT 2012 R2 environment.  Some of the systems are showing requiring NIC driver updates from Dell.  I'm a little leery of replacing the MSFT drivers with Dell Drivers so want to hear back on recommendations.  I'm concerned that MSFT may not have tested fully the drivers and/or Hyper-V has been tested extensively using MSFT drivers versus vendor NIC drivers.

Newbie Hyper V 2012 Host Full Install NIC teaming recommendations

Hello,

I currently have a hyper v 2012 host with 4 NICs and is domain joined using one of the nics(static ip, which i removed before creating team).  I was told to team all of them(assign the same static ip so it is still on the domain) link the new hyper v switch to the team.  Is this best practice or what do you recommend regarding setups.  I want to segregate my traffic for vm's, management, migration, and iscsi traffic.  Can you assist in the setup.  I have another server with the same number of nics and want to start deploying VMs.  I will be using switch dependent mode with LACP.

Thanks

Network device: PCI Passthrough support in Hyper-V (Windows Server 2012 R2)

HI,

I know that Hyper-V does support SR-IOV where it attaches a VF for a PCIe Network device and assigns a Network adapter to a specific Virtual Machine but I was wondering If Hyper-V has options to enable PCIe Passthrough for a network device without SR-IOV for a VM. Let me know If you need more details.

Thanks...

Hyper-V lab domain, on company network, with outside network access

$

I'm trying to setup a lab environment with Hyper-V on Win8. It's going to be a 2012 R2 domain controller, one other 2012 R2 server, and a Win8 VM. The purpose of it is to give me someplace to "play" while I go through some training videos for System Center, Config Manager, Powershell, etc etc.

I have everything up and running, including the domain, but the problem I'm running into now is that either I keep everything on the External Network virtual switch I setup, or isolate it on a Private Network switch. The problem with External is that I can't give the VM's static IP's, because I don't have access to the production DHCP server or the list of available static IP's. And the problem with Private is that when I want to test out software update deployments via SCCM, I'll need Internet access.

So basically what I'm thinking is to setup an IP range for use on the VM network, but which also has access to the external network. However...I've been running into roadblocks (AKA it isn't working). I've tried assigning static IP's to the VM's, and setting the gateway and DNS to the production IP's, but that doesn't work. Possibly because I used private IP's (192.168.1.xxx)? Any suggestions?

Hyper-V Project

Ok Let me try and post this into the correct forum this time.

Question for everyone, I am in a position now where I can start to build my Hyper-V infrastructure at work to replace the 4 servers that are currently in operation.

Am I better off installing Windows Server 2012, adding them to the current domain and maybe even making my 2 hosts DC's (so I can provide the network with DHCP and DNS) and then instal the Hyper-V role and building from it that way? Or should I just go with the core install (no gui)?

The reason why I ask is that I have installed the Hyper-V core on one server as a test and I have set the network settings and it wanted to use the DNS servers which are my current physical DC's servers (which obviously won't exist eventually)

My original plan was to build the Hyper-V Infrastructure, build 2 virtual servers and make them DC's (with dhcp and dns) and then I can decommission the 2 physical servers that do this job, but this will mean that the dns settings that I gave the core will be invalid.

My end result is to have a 2 host hyper-v platform, running a bare minimum of 4 servers, I only need 1 sql server, 2 dc's, an application server and a file server.

Just not sure which is better to have the hyper-v core of server 2012 with hyper-v role.
