Clarification re: export-VM on 2012 R2

$

Could someone please explain to me exactly how the live export is working?

If I export a live VM that is running MS SQL, for instance, is there any danger of my database becoming corrupt when the exported VM is subsequently imported somewhere else?

Previously if i wanted to take a live-ish copy of a running VM, i'd script the process of a VSS shadow creation, excluding the writers I didn't need, copy the VHD off and start it up somewhere else. I presume i no longer need to do this?

Cheers!

Slow VM disk performance on WS2012 Hyper-V cluster

$

Hi everybody,

I am having a pretty annoying problem with our Hyper-V Cluster. One, and only one of our VMs keeps getting into a state where disk performance is absolutely horrible (a few tens of KBps on sequential transfers). The interactive performance in a RDP is also affected.

However, as soon as I do a Live Migration to the second node in the cluster, the performance goes back up to where it should be. Live Migrating it back to the original cluster node keeps the performance up, that is until a few hours later, at most a couple of days, the performance goes back to being horrible. Apply, rinse, repeat.

In the parent partition on that cluster node, the disk performance is just fine, irregardless of what happens in the VM. No abnormal CPU usage to be seen, either in the parent, or in the VM. No particular events logged either. The Live Migration is also pretty slow when the VM is in the affected state, moving it back performs observably faster (i.e., once the problem is "reset" through live migrating it on the second node).

The cluster is WS2012, the VM is also WS2012. It only functions as a file server, no other software installed, not even an antivirus. The VM is however relatively large (4 vCPUs, 32 GB RAM, a 120 GB dynamic VHDx as a system drive, and a 24 TB dynamic VHDx as storage for the file share).

There are a few mentions online about similar problems, but no concrete tips on what could cause it. Anybody have any ideas?

What are Microsoft equivalents of VMWare products?

$

Hi,

I am familiar with the VMWare products - Player, Workstation and ESXI and want to know what the Microsoft equivalents are. The host will be either Windows 7,8, 2012 and the guests will also be those. I am looking into producing VM's to help with product evaluations and development.

I have heard about Hyper-V but I don't understand if this is a client or server system.

Can some explain what are the equivalents of VMWare Workstation, Player and ESXI?

Thanks

Jason

HYPER V 2012 R2

I have installed hyper v 2012 R2 on a dell r720XD, When my laptop is connected to the same router I can manage everything. I have a static IP connected to it.

But when I am at home or somewhere, I want to connect to it and manage it. I am simulating a situation since we are sending it to a colo location. NO VPN just a public IP.

At home I can not access disk management and the hyper v manager from my windows 8.

I can do RDP, access services, use mmc for firewall but not disk management and hyper v manager.

I modified the host to list the IP address of the server and the name.

I did the cmdkey, server, name, password

I did the

set-item wsman:\localhost\Client\TrustedHosts -value * -concatenate -force

I did the edit limits allow anonymous logon,

i did these

netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Remote Administration” new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”File and Printer Sharing” new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Remote Service Management” new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Performance Logs and Alerts” new enable=yes
Netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Remote Event Log Management” new enable=yes
Netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Remote Scheduled Tasks Management” new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Remote Volume Management” new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Remote Desktop” new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Windows Firewall Remote Management” new enable =yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”windows management instrumentation (wmi)” new enable =yes
 net start vds

Is there a setting I missed so I can fully manage my server from another location?

Error creating virtual machine (Client Hyper-V, Win 8 Pro)

I'm using an AlienWare M14 machine. I tried to create a virtual machine locally using Client Hyper-V on Windows 8 Pro, but it still doesn't work (took me a lot of time). I added the Hyper-V features in "Turn windows feature on or off", and all of the requirements to run Hyper-V are fulfilled (SLAT, BIOS, 64 bits, ...) (I attach the msinfo32 output in this post). At the last step in creating a virtual machine, it says "... The system cannot find the path specified... (0x80070003)" (for details, check my attached image). I googled, tried some solutions but still no luck so far.

Thanks for any help.

iSCSI connected but no disks showing

Hi,

we have 2 windows server 2012 (not R2) boxes. 1 physical acting as the storage server and 1 virtual connecting to it via iSCSI.

The iSCSI initiator connects and no errors are posted in the event log, but no matter how hard we try the disks do not show up in disk manager.

Does anybody have any thoughts on what could be causing the problem. Windows firewall is disabled on both boxes.

thanks

Xendesktop 7.1 - Connecting to Provisioning Services - Please wait

Hi,

We have a problem with Hyper-V 2012R2 and Citrix Xendesktop 7.1:

When PXE booting our VM's we get a delay from 1 minute before the connection to the PVS server will be made and the vDisk will be found. It shows:Connecting to Provisioning services. Please wait....
When we take a 2012 server instead of 2012R2, everything works fine and fast...

What's changed within 2012R2 what could cause this problem?

Somebody?

Kind Regards,

Kris

HyperV Replication

$

I have a 2 server cluster, FiberChannel DAS.  Less than 3 TB total data on CSV, so NOT a huge shop.  2 HyperV hosts with 8 total VM's, 4 running on each server.  HyperV host at remote site for VM replication.  No known issues with setup or configuration.  I am at this time only replicating 3 VM's.  We had to remove the replica host from the datacenter because the cost of data overages was going to get me fired.  We were seeing almost 3 TB data a month.  Opened TechNet support ticket and were not able to find any issues to explain the inordinate SIZE of data being moved.

I know that from time to time the VM's are resynchronizing instead of simply replicating, but I don't know why this is happening and I don't think it explains everything.  At this point i'm wondering how many people are using HyperV to replicate to an off-site server??

With the bare minimum 3 servers I am currently replicating I see 40 to 80 GB of data a day.  Over the course of the last 2 weeks the average amount of data pushed to this server is 58 GB per day, which runs in the neighborhood of 1.8 TB per month.

Industry software package with SQL backend and front end server.  FE have very little config and rarely changes.  The main db is roughly 300 GB in size.

The 3rd VM being replicated is a sharepoint server, again, small shop with about 70 employees, this server changes very little.

As I mentioned, the MS HyperV support team crawled all over my servers and declared my configuration to be correct.

Anyone else see this kind of volume on replication traffic?

Very poor recovery performance

Hello,

When we use use either Windows RE or a third party image based full system restore into a Guest VM, the data transfer speed is painfully slow. we're talking over an hour for 52GB when it should be around 10 minutes!

here is the setup:

Server 2008 R2 hyper-v

broadcom netextreme ll 1Gbps network adapter - this connects to an iSCSI target which holds the recovery images, the iSCSI target resides on a NAS which has several disks in RAID 0 and also has 1Gbps network adapter. the transfer speed achieved to and from the Host (local disks) and NAS is getting around 100MBps, approx 80-90% of the 1Gbps adapter. this is fairly decent performance for us. the disks in the server and NAS achieve much higher than 160MBps.

second broadcom netextreme ll 1Gbps network adapter which assigned to the virtual switch, and shared with the management adapter - again, transfer speeds using this adapter on the host to the NAS is the same as the other one. the virtual machine's OS VHD file exists on a seperate iSCSI target which is on a seperate physical NAS (performance from host to NAS is fine at around 100MBps)

i offline the iSCSI target so I can attach it to the SCSI controller of the VM guest, i start the guest and perform a recovery, the data transfer speed was around 5MBps regardless of restoring a windows image or a third party image, this is nowhere near what I am expecting.

i enabled flow control on both adapters and the performance has gone up to around 10-15MBps, sometimes spiking at about 20MBps, this is still a long way off what I am expecting.

I believe this has to do with the network adapter on the hyper-v host, there must be a setting which needs adjusting but I am unsure what. if I am looking at transfer speeds to all the locations involved, I am easily getting 80MBps -110MBps depending on what I am transferring to and from various locations, so I am expecting a recovery speed within the VM guest of going a minimum of 80MBps, preferably 100MBps really.

any ideas? many thanks

Steve

AVHDX files maxed out disk space in the middle of a merge

$

Yesterday I deleted a bunch of snapshots of a VM, because they were no longer needed and I thought that by doing so, it would free up some space. However, I walked in this morning and discovered that the VM was in a merging state, and there were three AVHDX files sitting on that disk...and had subsequently taken up all my disk space. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get the VM back up and running. Can I just delete the AVHDX files?

The virtual machine management service is not available

Both my server core and client machine is in workgroup..

i ran the commands in client for server core and client machine:

for server core i typed something like this: hvremote /mode:server /add:user << this is acceptable right? cause i cant run the command IN the server core.. should be okay i guess, since i'm able to connect the server core in hyper v manager.

I already enabled what's required to enable in the BIOS settings (eg. virtualization technology etc) for both the server core and the client machine. after enabling i did shut down and on again.

i used hvremote to configure all the necessary configurations.

i can connect the server core from the client machine in the hyper v manager but i got the error 'The virtual machine management service is not available'.

i asked this before in previous threads: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/cc66908d-fd28-482c-acbe-b6d7a9c8fc6c/#30fc45aa-8319-4632-aab8-be6781b0c67f

how come? what did i miss out? i really have no idea..

Hi,

I have a laptop with dual boot on two Windows 8.1 OS.

I have Hyper-V on both Windows 8.1 installation. One boot for work and other for personal use.

But sometime i need to work in my hyper-v machine in the both Windows 8.1 installation.

It is possible du share hyper-v machine between the OS ? Is not very useful to export or copy the vm each time i need to boot in my other Windows 8.1.

Thank you!

Does Hyper-V alternate WWPNs in Pair Only ?

Can anyone please suggest quick resolution ? if any,

As per practice I have created VM on hyper-v Host1 under fail-over cluster and added Two Virtual Fiber Adapters (i.e Set A WWPN Set B WWPN) due to being Dual Port HBA on Host1 & Host2 and then these ports were connected with Virtual Fiber Switch created on both Hyper-V.

Live Migration is OK with these setting and Additional Virtual Drives are also moved from Host1 to Host2

But when we unplug on Physical Connection from any of Hyper-v Host, Live migration dot allow me to move as per my understanding Hyper-v actually does back and forth between A and B WWPN pairs, My quick question is, when we disable or unplug one port of HBA on Host2 and try to move VM from Host1 to Host2, it does not work and returned back with the following error,

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine Win_2012' failed.

Virtual machine migration operation for 'Win_2012' failed at migration destination 'Host1'. (Virtual machine ID 80301667-7C11-4C61-8E32-0D79C4066F3C)

'Win_2012' Synthetic FibreChannel Port: Failed to start reserving resources with Error 'Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.' (0x800705AA). (Virtual machine ID 80301667-7C11-4C61-8E32-0D79C4066F3C)

Hyper-v on windows server 2012

Dear All,

I have IBM Blade center and 2 Blade Servers and installed windows server 2012 standard, and planning for virtualization through hyper-v. i.e. one physical server can use for two applications(VM's), two physical serves will give four virtual machines.

1. here do I need  three windows server 2012 licenses ? one for physical server and remaining for two virtual machines. i.e. for two physical servers to virtualize with hyper-v, we require six windows server licenses and will get four virtual machines only.

2. System center is required for to manage VM's,  is it possible to manage VM's without System center

Thanks & Regards
