initial replication fails repeatedly

2102R2 hosts. Start initial replication for VM and after a period of time it fails, I resume replication and it goes on for a while longer and fails again. The event log shows Event ID 33680, followed immediately by 32086, followed immediately 32022. I cannot figure out what is causing the failure and the event id's provide no information. I am not sure how to start troubleshooting this one.

Hyper V and Vlan

hello I have a VM with a virtual switch, I assigned inside the setting of the VM a Vlan Id,  I have 2 virtual network, one is to connect my VM to internet and the other is to connect to my LAN, when I create the Vlan how that works in my physical switch, do I have to set the ports with the Vlan Ip address, what Ip address do I have to set in the port of my physical switch , that one that I am using in my VM or that one of my virtual switch, do I have to do all the recommendation in the creation of a Vlan in a physical switch?, like set all the parametres in the physical switch, or all those connection is already made with Hyper V? how it works then the ACL? kind of lost.

Thanks

Importing Hyper-V VM to Windows 8.1 Hyper-V from Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Export gives error

Hi,

On Windows 8.1 Preview with running Hyper-V I can't import any more exported VM's from Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V export. It worked great on Windows 8. Of course I manage to use just VHD, and everything is working, but this is additional step, first to create VM.

Is it a Windows 8.1 Preview bug or expected behavior?

Best regards,

Virtual Machine - high disk response time

$

Hi Everyone,

Got something strange happening in our lab at the moment and was wondering if anyone had experienced the same thing (and maybe has a solution).

Our lab environment in a nutshell:

2x Windows 2012 Hyper hosts cluster connected to a "home-made" SAN based on Windows 2012 iSCSI target.
Each Hyper-V host has two 1Gbps network cards to connect to the SAN via the Microsoft iSCSI initiator, with MPIO in load-balancing mode (least queue depth).

The SAN (Windows 2012 server with iSCSI target) has 4x 1Gbps cards, teamed two by two, so presenting two IP addresses used by each hosts to connect to it (via MPIO).
The disk subsystem on the Windows 2012 SAN is an external HP storage works with 25x HP 500 SATA disks, connected to the server via an INTEL RAID controller with 2x 240GB SSD caching enabled for read/write.

The iSCSI network is on a dedicated HP switch, with flow-control and jumbo frame enabled (tested ok).

Now the problem:

I've built a few virtual machines on the two hyper-v nodes and I'm getting very bad disk response time as soon as there is an increase in the disk traffic.
When the virtual server is doing very little, I get a normal 6-8ms, but I soon as I increase the traffic (by for example copying a big file, or installing an application), this figure shoots up to 200ms, 300ms and more!

So I first thought that it was my disk subsystem (and the SAN server), but while the spikes are happening within the virtual machine, the disks on the SAN Server are sitting at about 10ms, with some spikes to about 20ms (which is pretty good and what I would expect to see within the VM because of the SSD cache).

I then thought it could be the network, but during those times of activity, the network does not get saturated at all. Barely 150Mbps to 200Mbps per link.
I even tried to disable MPIO and run everything across one Ethernet link, but still the same result.

Am I missing something here? doing something wrong? or is this expected behaviour?

Thank you,
Stephane

Windows 2012 Hyper-V - Enable Replication Failed due to iSCSI disks

I have successfully replicated all VM's, but 1 VM failed due to the following error:

Cannot enable replication for 'VM02' because one or mor iSCSI disks are attached to the virtual machine.

What doesn't make sense is I am able to do a Live-Migration between Hyper-V host without a single issue, but you can't replicate!

Here is the VM / Host configuration:

The VM has a SAN connected via iSCSI Initiator.  I am not using a Virtual Target or VHD's.  There are 2 Volumes on the SAN and the Volumes are bound as drives E & G.  The SAN is connected to a dedicated switch and BOTH of my Hyper-V hosts have 2 NIC's each connected to the dedicated switch.  BOTH Hyper-V hosts have identical Virtual Switches named SAN1 & SAN2 so no matter what host the VM resides on it can connect to the physical SAN.iSCSI Initiator

Replica VM's not getting virtual switch set

I have successfully setup cert based replication between 2 of my clusters on different domains.

I have noticed that the replicated VM's don't have anything selected in the Virtual Switch. How do I get it to pick up the virtual switch based on name? Both clusters have both an "external" and "internal" virtual switch and the VM's (140 of them) have a varying combination of virtual nic's connected to these 2 virtual switches.

Does integration services need to be removed when converting a Hyper-V VM to ESX?

$

We run Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 currently for our Dev/Test.  We have a VM that doesn't belong in our environment and needs to be moved to our Prouduction which uses ESX.  When doing the V2V conversion do we need to remove Integration Services first?  This post suggests that since Integration Services is only enabled through the bios when started on a Hyper-V Host.  If the VM is converted to VMware Integration Services won't be started.

Can someone confirm for me if this is true?

Thank you.

Poor IO on fixed VHDX disks 2012 R2

I have a 7 node 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster (failover cluster) with SCVMM.  The backend storage is a Netapp 2040-2, cluster-mode, and I'm using SMB 3.0 for my storage protocol.  The hosts each have 4 1Gb bonded NICs using LACP and TransportPorts.

When I first setup the cluster, I did some testing from the guests and found that I could write to the storage at or near the speed of the network, 4Gb/s (512MB/s).  This last week, applications started performing slowly and I found that I could now write to the storage at only about 30MB/s.

I checked the storage, network, found no problems or bottlenecks.

Finally, I created a VM directly on the hyper-v host which is has not been added as a resource to the failover cluster and was not created via SCVMM.  This VM can write to the same storage (same volume, share, spindles, etc) at almost 4Gb/s.  I can test simultaneously with any VM on any one of my 7 hyper-v hosts and it continues to have excellent IO performance and the VMs inside the cluster continue to have poor IO performance.

I have run packet traces to try to determine if anything could be wrong with the conversation between hyper-v and the storage, but found no issues.

Hyper-V Windows 2012 r2 Poor network performance

Hi,

Since that I installed Windows 2012 R2 and Hyper-v, I notice that is very slow performing copy operations from the VMs to the physical machine (appears to be lock to 10MB). Firs I though that this issue was only between the VMs and the parent OS, now I realized that when copying between this Hyper-v physical host and another physical host in the same subnet I also get only 10MB of speed.

How do I unlock this 10MB limit??

The switch and all NICs are GIGABIT capable and before using Windows 2012 r2, using the same hardware boxes I was doing 400MB of transfers between physical hosts and VMs??!!

Thank you.

Hyper-V with Windows Server Essentials in a VM - adding a second physical disk to VM - now VM will not start

$

Hardware previously had Windows Server Essentials 2012 running fine.

Current setup, base is Hyper-V 2012 with Windows Server Essentials in a VM, which has been installed a few weeks ago and is stable, but only on the main SSD.

I decided to try to configure so that the physical disks were available directly to WSE, hoping that the management of them would be easier.

I had one SCSI in the VM, and aside from the SSD boot disk, I was able to add 1 3TB drive, and it all works.  If I add a second 3TB drive,  the WSE VM will not start.   It tries to start, but goes back to off in a few seconds.

I then decided to put the 3TB drives on a second virtual SCSI within the VM, to see if that was better.

No change, one drive ok, but two  and the VM will not start.

Then I booted the VM with the 1 3TB drive that worked, and then while the VM was on, I was able to add 3 more 3TB drives, and the VM stayed up.  I was able to create a storage space from the 4 drives, mirrored, thin provisioned, the standard WSE 2012 settings (I kind of wish it would give you a choice on these, but...).   Everything seemed to be working fine.

But, when the VM was stopped, it will not now restart.   I suppose I have to delete the 3 extra drives, which will cause storage pool disaster I presume.

Seems odd that I can add them, and use them in WSE2012, but then it will not restart.   And they were on a separate virual SCSI controller from the "boot" drive.

Any ideas?    (or let me know if this is the wrong forum... since the VM would not start, I am blaming Hyper-V...)

Thanks!

Trouble migrating 2008R2 VM to 2012R2 Host. Intergrated Components fail

Hello All

We have a new 2012 R2 server with Hyper-V.

I'm trying to migrate the VMs from 2012 Std Host but when I move a 2008 VM it seems to struggle to load the intergrated components or it's having trouble with the built in components from the 2008 VM.  It appears to be the same with our 2011 SBS VM too.  The 2011 fails to even create the virtual NIC within the VM.

I've successfully moved two 2003 VM's without issue.

Help please?

Thanks

Well, how did not get any results in searches, then checked the versions of the IC on client machines as clusters migrated from 2008 to 2012 some were outdated, updated them, even just to leave everything compliance.

So I decided to clear the "Backup (volume snapshot)" and now he backs up but does the same linux machines, saving the machine and causing downtime of it, and even if you are a linux machine with this option it can not perform the backup this because it tries utilizr VSS method (I think).

Please, anyone help-me?

thanks!

General Access Denied Error - Hyper-V

$

Hi

We have a Hyper-V 2012 3 node cluster, the VMs are stored on a Server 2012 based 2 node Scale Out File Server.

We created this setup from new in October 2013 and it has generally worked OK since but we do get the occasional "General Access Denied Error (0x80070005)" when we try to live migrate a virtual machine.  The instructions in the below TechNet article do not work for us - the result indicates success but when we try the Live Migration again we get the same error message.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2249906/en-gb

I have in the past resolved this by removing the virtual machine from Failover Cluster Manager, migrating it via Hyper-V Manager, logging on to the destination Hyper-V host and re-importing it to Failover Cluster Manager from there.

However last night I was doing some system maintenance and went to drain a host via Failover Cluster Manager.  The host had around 20 VMs on it and only two VMs successfully migrated - the other VMs did not migrate and now I cannot move them from that host for love nor money!

The Event Log for FCM indicates they have the "General Access Denied" error.

I have tried the following:

  • Use instructions in above mentioned TechNet article (shows success, but same error happens when I try to Live Migrate)
  • Tried the method I have mentioned above (removing from FCM etc.).  Get the Access Denied message
  • Checking the folder permissions on the "Virtual Machines" folder where XMLs are stored.  Permissions appear OK for all Hyper-V hosts (also checked the VMs VHD permissions)
  • Trying the Live Migration directly on Hyper-V host rather than via a Constrained Delegation scenario
  • Checking Constrained Delegation in AD (seems fine as per when I set it up in October)
  • Checking permissions on the Scale Out File Server

With regards to the Scale Out File Server I have noticed in the past some odd permissions things going on.  I have seen the permissions for the Hyper-V hosts going from (for example) "Full Access" on "This Folder, Subfolders & Files" to random things like " Read/Modify" on "This Folder Only".  Manually changing the permissions back to Full Control resolves the issue, but does not stop it recurring again.

So I'm a bit confused really!  It looks like a mixed basket of permissions issues going on!  Some of our most critical machines are on that host at the moment and they cannot be moved.  Any suggestions appreciated.

Many thanks

Hyper-V permissions reset themselves?

I have Hyper-v server 2008 r2 installed on a server, and we have our hyper-v software to access the servers installed on another pc. Starting a few days ago when we open the hyper-v software to access or reset a VM, we get the error that we do not have permission to access the server that hyper-v server is installed on. This seemed to happen out of nowhere, not having much experience with hyper-v I'm not sure how to go about giving that pc permission to once again access the server.
