Hyper-V vCPU

Hello,

Have a guestion about vCPUs and programs. We have a client  who has a program which using only one core. When they start that program so program is using 100 % of CPU. Now they run server like VM and everything taking a lot of time and its very slow.  When i check in Task Manager i see that virtual server taking 100 % of CPU and when i check under Hyper-V (TASK MANAGER) then I see that those processors are almost on minimum usage. One core should be on full usage hmm??

I think that a lot of people gonna have problem with this when they have a program which only can use one core. Should be nice to know is it better to have that programs on physical server or not.

We have been waiting on server 2012 to be released , now that its out, I'm concerned about installing it on my 2008 R2 cluster after seeing Kb2526776. Has this been fixed? Im concerned about installing a patch that is not needed and causing problems down the road, however i dont want to loose a cluster node because we installed a 2012 VM.

Virtual SAN Setup on W2012 RTM

Hey everyone,
I have a lab I'm building.  I have a two node cluster running W2012 Datacenter edition on both.  Both systems have Brocade HBA compatible with Hyper-V and Virtual SAN technology.  I've created a Virtual SAN on HOST 1, created a Virtual Machine (W2008R2) with a Virtual HBA. Everything looks copasetic, I have my zoning configured, I see the Virtual HBA WWN on my Brocade DCX, and have zoned it appropriately to my Hitachi HUS150 storage with a 1TB LUN assigned to the HostGroup.

I don't see any DISK in the disk management.  I see 1 Storport Adapter in the VM, I have MPIO installed.  I have 4 UNKOWN devices in device manager.  Not sure what they are, but this is a clean install of W2008R2 into the VM.  I'm guessing it must have something to do with the Virtual HBA, but I'm not certain.

I've checked everything, and if this were a physical server it would be working correctly.  Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this, and further documentation to read to ensure I've setup everything correctly?

thanks for the help

OS - Server 2008 R2 SP1 with Hyper-V installed

Hi there...I would like to see traffic captured and sent to a loging server in the Hyper-V which needs promiscuous mode enabled...I have been going through forums...

Its just a doubt...will the VLAN Promiscuous work (in the link - http://www.hyper-v.nu/archives/tag/nic-team/ )

Alternatively, from this link - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/a3c0e8fa-976c-4100-88d7-ceba517d23aa/   -  OID_GEN_CURRENT_PACKET_FILTER doing it pro grammatically. If so, can you please provide me more information how that can be setup...

VM not recognizing virtual network adapter

$

I am evaluating Windows server 2008. Hyper-V is the only role added. I created a virtual network and it seems to be working fine, however, none of the virtual machines would recognize the virtual network adapter.
In the device manager of the VM, I have the yellow triangle with the exclamation mark for the following drivers: Microsoft VMBus HID mini port, Microsoft VMBus Network adapter and Unknown device. If I try to diagnose the VMBus network adapter, I get the following response:
The device cannot start (code 10) - Windows was able to successfully install device driver, but the driver software encountered a problem when it tried to run.
All drivers are up to date. I found the lates network adapter drivers on the Intel web site.
I even reinstalled windows and Hyper-V role from ground up with no luck.
My server has dual quad core (Harpertown) xeon processors, 16GB memory, 4 network cards with 2 set up as virtual network adapters.
Any help in getting the VMs to recognize the Virtual network adapters would be appreciated.

physical to virtual server using disk2vhd

I have a w2k3sp2 non DC that i want to move to a VM.  I run the disk2vhd and then create my virtual and move the VHD files to my w2k8r2 host.  I wait a month and then i add a NIC under hyper-v vm manager.  I then unplug the nic on the physical server.  after i reboot the vm it won't let me log since it says my machine account cannot be found and wilkl not let me login while the nic is attached yet my phyiscal server has been disconnected.  Did the delay of the month cause the problem and hsould i run the disk2vhd program move the vdh to the server in one day?  Thanks.

VHD & AVHD locations were moved - now cannot export and snapshots do not merge

The following changes that were made and are thought to be causing the problems were done because SCVMM 'migrate storage' feature wouldn't work when the vhd and/or the avhds were stored in a subfolder of the VM folder. So we moved them to the root folder using the steps below:

1. Switched VM off
2. Cut and paste vhds and avhds from the sub-folder to the root of the VM folder where the original vhd resided.
3. Used Hyper-V manager to view VM settings and updated the location of the original avhd that it was pointing to.
3b. When updating avhd location an error1 popped up: "Data loss may occur if you continue...if you want to retain changes, create another snapshot to preserve those changes." and it gives the options to take snapshot and continue or continue without snapshot.
3c. On clicking continue without snapshot option, a second error2 appeared warning "make sure the avhd file you are about to attach is not used by any other virtual machine".
4. We chose continue.
5. The VM starts fine and seems to work ok.
6. If we shut down the VM and try an export it gives the following error3:  export failed for vm the system cannot find the path specified (0x80070003)
7. It also gave a similar error when we tried to delete the parent snapshot
8. It did let us delete the snapshot subtree but it didn't merge any of the avhds even after shutting down the VM and leaving it off for 5 minutes. So we now have Hyper-V GUI showing 7 snapshots but there is 9 avhd files.
9. When we inspect the disk chain starting with the newest avhd its parent disk is different than if we use HypV GUI to directly look at the settings of the parent of the 'NOW' snapshot.

I know this is difficult to explain, ideally I think it would be best to be able to upload a video clip of the problem. It would be so much easier to show people the problem.
Ideally what we would like is to get the VM back in a healthy state. I would be happy to get rid of all the snapshots but I'm wary of corrupting this live system without being able to back it up using export etc.

Thanks for any advice.

NOTE: Some error pics are from test lab not actual production VM that has many more snapshots.

Server 2012 Hyper-V HA Live Migration - MAC Address Changes After Migration and Reboot

As the Title states "Server 2012 Hyper-V HA Live Migration - MAC Address Changes After Migration and Reboot".

I'm using Windows Server 2012 NIC teaming and not 3rd party NIC teaming.

2 Node Hyper-V Cluster Server 2012

1 Team on each Node used only for Hyper-V Virtual Network adaptor.

When machine is LM from node# to node# MAC stays static and everything works as expected. But if that Machine is rebooted at any point after that the MAC will change.

The Network Adaptor is also renamed in the VM to "Ethernet 2"

Setting a static MAC works but I don't think this is supposed to be happening, Please clarify me if I'm wrong.

Here is a similar issue with 3rd party teaming and server 2008: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverhyperv/thread/c4223e6f-65c3-4c59-aa6b-5fb70f0e5abf

Any suggestion I can take to fix this error?

Thank you.

Hyper-V Server 2012 - No Live Migration Settings?

I have installed Hyper-V Server 2012 on two machines, and I have Hyper-V Manager running on a Windows 7 client. Creating and running VM's seems to work fine this way. Next I wanted to try a live migration, but I'm stuck here. On the internet I see that I should right click a host, choose "Hyper-V settings", and then under "Live Migrations" I need to adjust some settings. The problem is that I have no "Live Migrations" when I go to the Hyper-V Settings... Under 'server', I only see the virtual harddisks path, the virtual machines path, and the NUMA thing.. What am I doing wrong here? Thanks for any help!

USB Printers on Server 2012 Hyper-V

$

hi,

we have recently installed server 2012 with hyper-v role only, and virtualised our dc and dfs servers under the same license. and we are now needing to connect a usb printer for use within our office. we cannot connect the usb printer direct to the virtualised dfs server (lack of usb support)

is it possible to connect the usb printer to the host install without invalidating our licensing?

is it possible to install the usb printer to the host, and use the print service from within the dfs server - therefore our clients are accessing the dfs server? how would this affect our licensing?

our other option is to go for a usb-network print server box, i am trying to avoid spending and would like to understand the licensing on this.

thanks

Rebuilding Hyper V after crash

$

I am currently having an issue with our Domain Controller network environment which is on Hyper V. Basically the machine that was hosting the Hyper V has crashed. The problem is not with hard drive but with the corrupted hyper v file.

We have all the vhds and xml configuration files in separate partition. Plan is to make a fresh install of hyper v and reattach all virtual machine. My question is how to do this so that we can retain same DC network?

Please let me know if you need further clarification.

Thanks,

Windows 2008 Hyper-V Vm can I add a processor after I have installed Windows 2008 and apps?

I just setup a Windows 2008 R2 Sp1 vm on my Hyper-v VM host.

Now I need to add another processor. Can I do that without installing the OS or any apps.

Would there be apps that are processor aware, like SQL so SQL would need to be reinstalled to see the additional processor.

Nic card not working

Good Day,

I am running a Windows 2008R2 SP1 fileserver, I was doing my Oct updates and after rebooting the VM the system came up and was sluggish.  I finally got into the system but noticed that I did not have any network connectivity.  On the lower right I noticed a yellow exclamation point for the network.  I looked over the application logs and System logs and sure enough I was not connecting to the network.  No domain found,  no policy, no time the normal stuff.

I checked device manager and the Nic was there no issues no other issues found in the event logs other than what I wrote above.  I rebooted and the same thing happened.  As a last ditch effort I disabled and then reenabled the Nic and it came up.  So I rebooted again and the same thing happened.  So I know I can reproduce the error.  I have three other servers on the host and I have updated all but one of my servers with the Oct updates.  Hosts are clean no errors.

I am looking for any idea on what could be causing this issue or if anybody has seen this before.

Thanks

Group Policy for DHCP Guard and ARP/ND spoof protection

$

Are there group policies for setting the new features of the Hyper-V switch, such as DHCP Guard and ARP spoofing?  I haven't found anything specific to these new settings.  And, since they are off by default, I would like to set this on all VMs created and manually turn it off only for those machines that need it off.

Alternatively, can I assume that the setting stays through sysprep?  I can't imagine why it wouldn't, and I'll get around to testing it when I find a bit of time.

Thanks for the pointers.

Hyper-V host 1Gbps NIC negotiated at 100 Mbps when used for Virtual Switch

$

Hi all,

Hoping someone can shed some light on this one as I’ve been trying to hunt down a solution for a week now.

Setup

  • HP ProLiant ML350 G6 with HP NC326i PCIe Dual Port Gigabit Server Adapter network adapters
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Core with only the Hyper-V role installed
  • SBS 2011 installed as guest
  • Port 1 on Dual port NIC configured a physical port or management of Host only
  • Port 2 on Dual port NIC configured for use as an External Virtual Switch port for use by guests only

The issue is that the physical port connected to the Hyper-V virtual Switch negotiates with the network switch at 100 Mbps full duplex while the management port negotiates at 1 Gbps full duplex. All clients (brand new HP Z210 workstations) also negotiate with the switch at 1 Gbps.

During file copies and backups the network port connected to the Virtual Switch does not show any errors and transfers data at close to 100 Mbps. File transfers between individual workstations and workstations and server core again show no errors, but transfers at 1 Gbps.

One observation is that the physical NIC connected to the Virtual Switch does not negotiate with the switch until the Hyper-V service has started (I’m guessing) the virtual switch.

Also, while staging the server the Hyper-V virtual switch created when the server was connected to a 100 Mbps switch not a 1Gbps switch as it is in production.

Has anyone encountered anything similar and if so how did you get the physical NIC to operate at full capabilities? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Saved state backup Vs crash consistent

$

Hi

I'm trying to understand Saved state backups and exactly what happens in a hyper V saved state backup. Is a saved state backup equivalent to taking a crash consistent backup or is it equivalent to taking a cold backup (offline)?

My understanding since VSS is not involved inside the VM is that these are not application consistent backups. What would a user need to do when restoring a saved state backup? would applications inside the VM have some data loss, inconsistent data?

Could somebody please explain the difference between a saved state backup and a crash consistent backup. Is a saved state backup considered equivalent to a crash consistent backup?

Thanks in advance!

Hyper-V 2012 Virtual Machine Management Service stops for no apparent reason

$

Starting initial testing for migration to Hyper-V 2012 (or is it referred to as v3.0?). Essentially out of the box install of Server 2012 Data Center RTM (Full), with Hyper-V role enabled. The day after the initial setup. I opened the Hyper-V console from a remote computer to start testing and was unable to connect to the Hyper-V Management Service. Logging in to the server directly I see that the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management services has stopped (Kudos MS for making that so easy to see!). After spending awhile in the event log and finding no reason (I see the service stop but no errors associated with it) I chalk it up to a fluke of the previous days initial install. Next day same thing. Except two other services have also stopped. More event log research but no trail to follow. It’s as if the service is being commanded by something to stop?? The only possible connection I see is ConfigMgr 2012 client activity near the same time frame as the service stopping.

Obviously I can’t move forward with further testing and migration until I sort this out. Sure I can set the services to restart but not the ideal option.

Any ideas? Or is 2012 too new to consider for production? I’ve included a couple of event log entries and a list of the services that get stopped.

Thanks, Ken

HyperV VMM Storage for Server 2012

I was reading the Server 2012 Microsoft Press RTM book and it mentioned Scale out File Server as a role in the cluster. Is this preferable to using the CSV after creating the HyperV cluster? If so would the file servers need to have HyperV roles and live in the same cluster to be accessed by VMM and HyperV?
