Hyper-V Cluster Moves VMs during reboot. Easiest way to move them back to original hosts?

$

0

We do not have any System Center products.

When we reboot Hyper-V hosts for Windows Updates, the guests move to other hosts.  When the old host is back up, we have to find where the hosts went and then manually move them back.

These updates are done during scheduled down time, so it would be fine if they went offline at that time and we really don't need the guests to move back and forth during scheduled outages.  It would be easier if they just paused and resumed as the host shutdown and restarted, remained where they are and only moved to new hosts if there was an unexpected/unplanned shutdown of the host.

Is there a better way to do this or to automate moving them back to the original hosts when those hosts finish rebooting?

Win2008 VHD in WinSvr2012 Hyper-V?

Ran the new virtual machine wizard on Windows Svr 2012.  Pointed to a Win2008 VHD that I had created with sysinternals Disk2VHD.  Configured the network and memory and continued to the summary screen.  Clicked finish on the summary screen and the new Virtual Machine Wizard dialog froze for a very long time.  Once it finished, I started the VM and the console shows "Missing Operating System".  What am I doing wrong?

Virtual Machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running

Hi

I have installed Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition with a GUI. Default configuration, nothing special.

Whenever I want to turn on any machine inside of Hyper-V, the following error message appears:

"Virtual Machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running"

Whenever this happens, I run the following command:

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype Auto

and reboot the Server. After a reboot, all Virtual Machines can be started without Problems. However, as soon as I shut down the Server instead of rebooting it, the Problem happens again and I need to enter the command again and reboot.

Now my question is how to solve this Problem. I never had this Issue with Windows Server 2008 R2, maybe there are some differences regarding the Hypervisor in Server 2012. How can I make sure the Hypervisor is always on, even after a Shutdown? Thanks in Advance

How to Virtualise a user side server with SCVMM2010

Hi

We have a management server DC (2012) and a second management server (R2) both with Hyper-V role.  I have installed SCVMM2010 on the R2 box and was hoping to be able to 'RIP' user/public side servers straight into Hyper-V.

Have I got the SCVMM in the right place or should I reconnect the second server to the user side domain and then try?  I am currently unable to connect to the user side servers to rip them.

Thanks

Error when creating VHDX via Hyper-V Manager remotely

Hey all!

So, I installed Hyper-V 2012 Core on a box, patched it, and then joined it to the domain. If I connect to the server via Hyper-V Manager from either a Windows 8 machine or Server 2012 machine and try to create a VM, it says "There was an unexpected error in configuring the hard disk on [Insert VM Name Here]." I feel like I've tried everything. I can not create the disk manually via the Manager on its own, before or after the VM being created. I can, however, create the disk via PowerShell with out a problem! Via PowerShell, I can create a dynamic VHDX disk every time without an issue.

I was curious if anyone has had this problem and/or knows a solution.

Thanks in advance!

My Hyper-V no longer works - and it show VHDPARSER as unkown under devices

A guy at work patched a win2k8 data center server with the latest patches today, It took 21 patches (it had been a couple months) When it rebooted it sat at the (configuring windows fo updates) for over an HR, now keep in mind this is a (2)6 core Intel 3.4 Ghz (Dl380 g7) server so it shouldt take that long. The boss said sorry coudnt take it down any longer so he hit the power button. When it came back up it's VM's wouldnt start. thats when I got involved, I vpn'd in and tried to start them and they said a device wasnt connected. When I look in device manager (with hidden devices shown) I see one unknown device (which is yellow) it belongs to VHDPARSER. Several of the events say to reinstall Hyper-V so I tried that, (Server manager, remove role) Only thing is it whont completely uninstall when it reboots it goes into configuring fetures and bombs and reverts back. Anyone have any other ideas how I can uninstall and reinstall Hyper-V ?

Hyper-V switching arp issue with teaming

$

Hi

I hope you guys can help me with this problem. We have a Windows 2008 Ent. R2 installed over one HP BL460c G7 with NC553i (Emulex chipset). The server is connected to two Nexus 5000 with VPC through a pair of Virtual Connect Flex10. The server has two NFT teamings with preference order. First teaming carries VM production traffic and is connected to the first pair o Flex Nics handling Vlans. Each nic works as a physical nic (virtual connect emulation). This first pair os nics are connected to two 802.1q tunnel vnet. The second pair is connected to two VC shared uplink set that contains a set of vnets with their corresponding vlan association. This second pair doesn´t handle vlans as it are connected as access devices. I provide the environment info as a plus, but we don´t think this is the real problem. Everything is updated to the latest version available.

Let´s go with the tests. We have tried the high availability of the system, shutting down several cisco ports to ensure the teamings works as expected. All the tests were succesfull but those tests that involves the HyperV switch. I explain it deeply. If we try to ping the hyper-v host using a teaming that is NOT connected to one hyper-v switch it works perfectly. We remove a port, the team software changes the path and everything goes on. If we do the same test connecting an hyper-v switch to this team but we dont try to handle Vlan tags in the hyper-v switch it works smoothly. If we try to do the same test using a VM placed over the host and connected to the same hyperv switch or we try to make the server to handle vlans, it doesn´t work. We have noticed that is an arp issue since Virtual Connect doesn´t update the arp table until we force to send some packets from the vm. In the test we have also notice that we can get a mix of both situations. I mean, if we don´t use vlans in the hyper-v switch and we try to communicate via ping with the host and the vm, after the team change, the server works and the vm fails until manually we send traffic from it.

The funny side is we have a clone, almost exact, same hardware, same VC, same Hyper-V release and it works fine. The only differences are the windows version, datacenter vs enterprise, the network hardware HP IRF networking vs Cisco Nexus 5k VPC and the weather cloudy vs sunny..... I´m sure there should be anything else that have to be different.

I hope someone can help me. Any comment is more than welcome.

Thanks in advance.

VDI-like Setup for Household Use

I'm interested in setting up a VDI-like system for household use. In other words, I'd like to get some of the benefits of enterprise VDI in a much smaller scale - for example letting my kids connect to a virtual Windows 8 machine from school on their iPad. That said, I've got Windows Server 2012 loaded on a beefy server at my home that I use for development purposes. I've also used the real VDI capabilities of Windows Server 2012 at my work, so I have some idea that it's overkill for this project - I don't have DNS, Active Directory, etc. setup at home, and don't have any desire to set that stuff up.

So, the question is something like this... Can I use the Hyper-V functionality on my server, along with a few Windows 8 Pro virtual machines, and then allow each family members to connect to their own virtual machine via basic remote desktop. Actually, I know I can do that, the real question is can I get the benefits like RemoteFX, USB Redirection and high-quality media viewing?

I know those advanced features are often mentioned in the context of a real VDI deployement, but I'm wondering if they are also available in a simpler deployment?

Thanks in advance!

Windows Server 2012 - Can occasionally not access second virtual hard drive inside a VM

$

I run Windows Server 2012 RTM Hyper-V and I can occasionally not access the second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) attached to the VM through the virtual SCSI controller. I can however access the first hard drive that is connected with the virtual IDE controller.

I get the following warning in the event log under “Administrative Events” every 30 seconds when this happens:

  • Log Name: System
  • Source: Storvsc
  • ID: Storvsc
  • Message: “Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.”

I get this error once or twice a week and it has caused serious problems since one of the virtual servers that have this problem is a fileserver and the second hard drive contains all the data.

The only quick solution to the problem that I have found is to force the virtual machine to stop using the “Turn Off” feature since a normal shut down does not work (stops at shutting down the event log or similar) and then start the virtual machine again.

You can also wait for about 30 minutes or longer until the disk for some reason becomes accessible again by itself.

My research into this problem shows that:

  • Only 2 of the 10 VMs running Windows Server 2012 RTM that I have, have this problem.
  • Both these VMs have a second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) that cannot be accessed for 30 minutes or longer.
  • Check Disk of the virtual hard drive shows no errors.
  • The second hard drive is attached to the virtual SCSI controller.
  • I can find no problems at all with the physical storage on the (not related) 4 hosts that I have. The problem exists only in the VMs.

I have now attached the second virtual hard drive to the virtual IDE controller to see if this permanently fixes this problem (i.e. does not happen for at least a week).

Is there something wrong with the virtual SCSI controller or the virtual SCSI device driver that comes with Windows Server 2012 RTM? Does anyone else have this problem?

Windows Server 2012 Failover Cluster Virtual Fibre Channel Adapter Live Migration Error

Hello,

I've got a 3 node cluster running Windows Server 2012 on HS22 IBM Blades with 8GbFC HBA's connecting to a XIV SAN.  I am trying to get the virtual HBA's working in Hyper-V Guest running Windows 2008 R2.

I first created 2 virtual SAN Switches one connected to each port on my physical HBA (each physical port connects to a separate fabric).

I add two Virtual HBA's in my Guest, one to each VSAN Switch.

When I go to Zone the HBA's I only see side A of the virtual HBA's not both A and B.  On each fabric I should see two (A and B) WWPN but I only see one.

I can add disk and everything works, however when I go to Live migrate I get the following error due to side B not being zoned.

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine Win2012_01' failed.

Virtual machine migration operation for 'Win2012_01' failed at migration destination 'hv-cl07-c2'. (Virtual machine ID 2CE90D02-083C-4012-ACA1-BE8D35EFCA33)

'Win2012_01' Synthetic FibreChannel Port: Failed to finish reserving resources with Error 'Unspecified error' (0x80004005). (Virtual machine ID 2CE90D02-083C-4012-ACA1-BE8D35EFCA33)

Here are the Drivers I'm using for my Physical HBA's:

Has anyone see this issue yet?

Adding Folders to File Server in Hyper V

I am new to Hyper-V. I have created the role of file server and want to create 5 folders that different user groups can access. I am confused as to where I add these folders. If I click add a shared folder, it asks me for the path. What path are they referring to? Can anyone point me to step by step instructions.

Thank you

Hyper-V not supported on a VM?

$

I currently have 8 VM's running on a Dell 2970 (Dual Opteron dual cores, 2.8, 32 gigs, etc.) I previously had an applictation server and had remote application working perfectly. One of the users hosed the machine so i'm rebuilding it. The problem is that when I try to add hyper-V in the VM, I'm told that the CPU doesn't support it and I'm stuck. I've even installed SCVMM to set the CPU type to Opteron and still no joy.

The only significant change that I can think of on the host server is SP1. The new VM server install is also SP1

Guide to remote manage Hyper-V servers and VM's in workgroups or standalone

$

This guide is based on the following 3 products:
Windows server 2012 (core)
Windows 8
Hyper-V server v3 / Hyper-V server 2012

The following guide will enable you to:

1: remotely manage your Hyper-V Virtual Machines with Hyper-V manager
2: remotely manage your Hyper-V servers' firewall with a MMC snap-in.
3: remotely manage your Hyper-V server (2012) with server manager

! This should also work for Core installations of server 2012, but I haven't tried.

This guide is purely focussed on servers in a WORKGROUP, or as a stand alone.
I CAN NOT tell you what you need to do to get it working in a domain.

* You can run these commands straight from the console (Physically at the machine) or through RDP.
* You will need to be logged on as an administrator.
* Commands are listed in somewhat random order; I do however advise to follow the steps as listed.
* Commands with ? in front of them are only ment to be helpfull for troubleshooting,
* and to identify settings and changes made.
* Commands and instructions with ! in front of them are mandatory.

- server: means the server core or hyper-v server (non gui)
- client: means the machine you want to use for remote administration.
- Some commands are spread over 2 lines; be sure to copy the full syntax.

> To enable the Hyper-V manager to connect to your server, you need to perform the following 2 actions: (Assuming you have already installed the feature)

1:
! Client: Locate the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts file.
! right-click --> properties --> security
! click --> edit --> add --> YOURUSERNAME or Administrator --> OK
! then select this new user, and tick the "modify"-box under the "allow"-section.
! apply the change, and close.
! doubleclick the file, and open with notepad
! add the ip-address and name of your server (no // or other crap needed)
! Save the file
# I recommend putting a shortcut to this file on the desktop.
# If you change the ip-address of your server (e.g. move the server from staging to a live environment)
# you might forget to do so in the hosts file.
# Hyper-V manager, MMC, RSAT, and Server-manager all rely on the hosts-file to resolve the name.
# some of these might connect to their respective service on an i.p.-level, but some don't.
# This is the main reason you need to modify this file.

! USE AN ELEVATED CMD/POWERSHELL PROMPT TO CONTINUE !
# the next config needs to be done on windows 8.
# It seems that it's already preconfigured under server 2012

2:
! Client: dcomcnfg
! open component services --> computers
! right-click -> my computer -> properties
! select "COM SECURITY" tab
! under "ACCESS PERMISSIONS" select "edit limits"
! select "ANONYMOUS LOGON", and tick "remote access" under ALLOW
# Without this adjustment, you can't connect to your Hyper-V server
# with the Hyper-V manager if you're not in a domain.

> And if you haven't done so already... make sure you have enabled remote management number 4 on the Hyper-V server console.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

> Next, is to get the MMC firewall snap-in working.
The reason for this, is to have a GUI available to configure it.
If you're happy without it, you may skip this and use a shell instead to do so.

? server: netsh advfirewall show currentprofile
# shows the current profile (public/domain/private) and its settings
# depending on your needs, you should set the right profile to fit your needs.
# You can easily do this when the MMC snap-in is done. (after you've followed these steps)

! server: netsh advfirewall set currentprofile settings remotemanagement enable
# enables remote management of the firewall on an application level
# (In other words: allows the firewall to be remotely managed)

! server: netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Windows Firewall Remote Management" new enable=yes
# allows remote management of the firewall, through the required firewall ports with TCP protocol.
# 4 rules will be updated to allow access: public & Domain, dynamic and endpoint-mapper.
# You can disable/add/change the rule from the MMC snap-in after finishing this guide.
# e.g. set the firewall through the MMC-GUI to only allow specific ip-addresses etc.

? server: netsh advfirewall firewall show rule all
# Shows a list of available rules, and their current state.
# when run from cmd, the list exceeds the maximum length for review.
# (from cmd, type:) start powershell, and run the command from there.

! Client: cmdkey /add:YOURSERVERNAME /user:USERNAMEONTHESERVER /pass:THEPASSWORDOFTHATUSER
# I recommend you to use a username with enough privileges for management
# All capital letters need to be replaced with your input
# CMD answers "credential added successfully" when you're done

! Client: locate MMC, and run it as an admin.
# In windows 8/2012, go to search and type MMC. Right-click the icon,
# and choose run as admin on the bar below.

! Client: application MMC: select "file" --> Add/remove snap-in
! --> (left pane) scroll down to "windows firewall" --> select and click "add"
! select "another computer"
! type the name of the server you want to manage (NO workgroup/ or //, just same name as you typed for cmdkey)

* Part 2 is done.
# Have a look by doubleclicking the firewall icon in the left pane.
# It looks and works the same as the GUI version that you are familiar with.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

! Next is the Server Manager.
# Follow the steps listed to get your server listed and manageable in the server manager.

! Client: Open the created Firewall snap-in for your server.
! Find the 3 "Remote Event Log Management" entries in the list of INBOUND rules, and enable them.

! Open powershell --> in cmd windows, type: start powershell
! run the following line in powershell
! Client: in C:\Windows\system32> set-item WSMAN:\localhost\client\trustedhosts -value YOURSERVERNAME -concatenate

# WinRM Security Configuration.
# This command modifies the TrustedHosts list for the WinRM client. The computers in the TrustedHosts list might not be
# authenticated. The client might send credential information to these computers. Are you sure that you want to modify
# this list?
# [Y] Yes  [N] No  [S] Suspend  [?] Help (default is "Y"): y
#
# I recommend to choose yes; unless you like to pull some more hairs...

! server: winrm qc
# WinRM service is already running on this machine.
# WinRM is not set up to allow remote access to this machine for management.
# The following changes must be made:
# Configure LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy to grant administrative rights remotely
# to local users.
# Make the changes? y / n
!  select yes

! Client: open the server 2012 server manager
! click manage -> add server
! select the DNS tab, and type the name of your server

Done.

You can now manage your remote server through the familiar computer management GUI.

! Right-click your remote server, and select "Computer Management"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few side notes:

? The Performance tab seems to list the local machine's performance, in stead of the remote servers'
? If you want Windows server backup, you need to right-click the server in the server manager, and select "add roles and features.
? it will then become available under the "computer management" of the remote server.

If you liked this guide you may thank my employer, Mr. Chris W.
for giving me the time to work it all out.

Cheers!

Windows 2008 R2 Integration Services upgrade failure - Unable to launch one of the update programs

I have a patched Windows 2008 x64 Hyper-V host running multiple VM's.  One of the VM's is running Windows 2008 R2 x64.  When I click on "Insert Integration Services Setup Disk", I get a message " A previous version of Hyper-V Integration Services has been detected."  Clicking OK, it starts to update, but in the middle of the upgrade, I get a message "An error has occurred: Unable to launch one of the update programs".  Here is the end of the C:\windows\vmguestsetup.log":

Windows Directory = C:\Windows
System32 Directory = C:\Windows\system32

About to call preinstall

I'm not sure how to get these Integration Services updated.  (My Windows backup from the host is failing on this VM).  Any ideas?  I've tried to remove C:\WINDOWS \system32\DRIVERS\wdf01000.sys and C:\WINDOWS \system32\DRIVERS\wdfldr.sys and to redetect HAL.  Maybe I haven't done these things correctly...

How to Fix a Corrupted Hyper-V VHD File

Can't find virtmgmt.msc after upgrade from 2008R2 Core install to 2012 DataCenter Core

$

Hello,

Today I did an upgrade of our 2008R2 Enterprise Core server running Hyper-V to Server 2012 DataCenter core.  The install seemed to go fine and I was able to log into the machine and view the VMs from my local copy of Hyper-V manager.

I wanted to upgrade the disks from .vhd to .vhdx to take advantage of the new functionality.  Reading some blogs, I did the Minimal Server Install and then tried to run virtmgmt.msc to get access to the local Hyper-V manager.  However, it doesn't appear that virtmgmt.msc is installed on the server (couldn't find the file doing a directory search).

Is there something I am missing?  Do I need to uninstall and reinstall Hyper-V?

Thanks in advance,

Sean

High Availability Hyper-V 2012 Design Question

$

0

Below is a design that I am currently working on for our organization:

I am thinking that to provide the highest availability I will have a 2 node Hyper-V cluster at Site 1 and another 2 node cluster at site 2, each of which will have its own SAN. The Cluster at site 1 will provide redundancy for the servers and failover will occur between the 2 nodes if one server goes down. Having the second cluster with its own storage will provide redundancy for the storage as well. Then I will create failover clusters (starting with a print server cluster) of the VMs between the two clusters so that the VMs can failover in case of total failure of servers or storage at site 1. I have used the following to guide me through the design process:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/clustering/archive/2008/06/21/8628515.aspx

http://blogs.technet.com/b/josebda/archive/2008/06/17/windows-server-2008-hyper-v-failover-clustering-options.aspx

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29013

I am a bit unsure of the process for failover since essentially there are two possible failover paths (on the physical clusters or between the two with vm failover). Does anyone see any problems with this design? Is there something I am missing or am I making this more complex than necessary? Thanks!

NAT ing multiple VM's to seperate physical NICS

$

I have 3 host servers with 4 addictional NICs so that i have can have a 1 to 1 relationship between the vm and the physical NIC.  I have been able to create a seperate external virtual network and map those to the corresponding NIC.  That has been working great, however the company that i work for is implemeting 802.1x, and they are also using it as a billing mechanism.  So my problem with the scenario above is that i get "double" billed by the accounting group because my VM i configure for .1x and I leave the port on the server untouched.  It fails .1x, i could create a MAB object for it.  Again in this scenario i get hit twice for one machine.  I would like to NAT these, but i don't think I can NAT them in a 1 to 1 relationship,  which I want to keep.  does anyone out there have any suggestions?
