Hi there,

I am having some issues with the Hyper-V 2012 R2. I have installed Hyper-V role, created a NIC team and then created a virtual switch. Event log show a MAC conflict: A port on the virtual switch has the same MAC as one of the underlying team members on Team Nic Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver

How can i fix this?

High Network Utilization on HeartBeat and LiveMigration networks - Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster

$

Hi all,

I have just setup a fresh Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster with 4 nodes.

Config:

    • Network:
    • 2 x Networks for iSCSI
    • 1 x VM network 1
    • 1 x VM network 2
    • 1 x Heartbeat
    • 1 x LiveMigration

  • Disks:
  • 5 GB = Quorum
  • 2 x 2.99 TB (Deduplication enabled)

The problem I am getting is that HeartBeat and LiveMigration (both configured with Cluster Only traffic) have alot of traffic on them even though no LiveMigration (the only card configured for LiveMigration) is going on.

All network configuration is the same as it was in Windows 2008 R2 SP1 cluster which these machines where running before (not upgrade, fresh install and migration) and did not have this "problem".

Has anyone experienced this or have a solution to this?

Regards,
Thorir

Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V extend CSV

Hi Experts!

Here is my problem: I have 2 CSVs in my hyper-v cluster: 1 is 1TB and other one is 500GB.

The 500GB we decided to add more 500GB, completing 1TB. The data center extended the lun to 1TB and I ran in the command prompt the steps (my hyper-v servers are core):

1) Connect per RDP to current CSV owner
2) run diskpart from Command Prompt
  2.1) rescan
  2.2) list volume
  2.3) select volume ###
  2.4) extend
2.5) list volume (size should be extended to the max capacity)

Now the diskpart shows me the correct size, but the cluster manager does not (look the attachments).

Is there anything else I need to do?

Hyper-V 2012 replication

Hi,

I have 2 test servers which are in the same domain. I want to use kerberos authentication but I am getting same error all the time.

The error is: Hyper-v failed to authenticate using kerberos authentication. The specified target is unknown or unreachable (0x80090303). Hyper-v failed to authenticate the replica server using kerberos.I can ping both name and ip. Dont know why is it unreachable.

This is strange because they are in the same domain. When I test this first time i didnt have problems with it.

Hope that someone can help with this.

My DC is Small Business server and maybe is because of that or.

Best regards/kaktak

Virtual Desktop Collection Provisioning - Issue with Naming

$

Hi all,

I have created a Virtual Desktop (Pooled) Collection using Hyper-V in 2012 and an RD Connection Broker.

My question is pretty straight forward, though I cant seem to find an answer anywhere. If I add a machine to the Virtual Desktop Pool using Tasks > Add Virtual Desktop, and the job subsequently fails, I cant see an obvious way to clear/retry the job.

If I use a naming convention like RDP00, RDP01, RDP02 etc I have found that on subsequent jobs, the next computer name in the sequence (that would have been created in the previous failed job) is skipped, causing me to have machines that are not sequentially named.

This is kindve annoying, and I was hoping that there would be some way to delete/retry the job to add a Virtual Desktop.

Input would be much appreciated - It's very possible that I have simply missed something.

Thanks, and Merry Christmas!

Hyper-V Network Performance Issues

I have seen many posts similar to my situation but no "fixes" have worked. I have a Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition machine on Dell PowerEdge C6100 hardware [Intel NIC's] with Hyper-V installed. I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition VM running. The throughput when copying from another server is about 2.5Mbps which of course is VERY slow! I've tried disabling VMQ, enabling JumboPacket and disabling Large Send Offload as some other posts have suggested but none of this gives any better performance. When copying data across the same network to servers NOT running Hyper-V there are no issues and the speeds are about 1Gbps.

What is the issue with the Virtual Switch that is slowing everything down? I've read that the Broadcom adapters have had issues but these are Intel adapters. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Guest cluster does not see a shared VHDX

Hi!

I have a 2 Hyper-V VM, that want create guest cluster, using shared VHDX.

1. I create two virtual Windows 2012R2 std (VM first generation) on iSCSI SAN
C:\ClusterStorage\Volume3\domain.local\server1\server1.vhdx
C:\ClusterStorage\Volume3\domain.local\server2\server2.vhdx

2. I added the shared VHDX files to the first SCSI controller on both virtual machines and create shared VHDX:
C:\ClusterStorage\Volume3\domain.local\cluster\cluster_quorum.vhdx (4 Gb)
C:\ClusterStorage\Volume3\domain.local\cluster\cluster_data.vhdx (8 Gb)

3. Open up the advanced settings of the shared VHDX on both VMs and check the box Enable Virtual Hard Disk Sharing.

4. I see both shared disks in storage console (4 and 8 Gb), but cluster not see any disks

Sorry for my english. Help please!

Select live migration network in Cluster migration - Script

$

Hey folks

I understand that this Cmdlet (set-vmmigrationnetwork) is not for the cluster . However In Hyper V cluster , By default It is selecting all the networks to use for live migration . Is there anyway we could script it to select specific network rather. ? . Also is there any chance we could name the cluster networks. Out of the box it is cluster network 1 , Cluster network 2 etc ...

Can we script it to name as ISCSI , Live migration, Cluster heartbeat etc . Just to make is easy to visualize.

Thanks

Divide Management and VMs traffic

$

Hello,

I can't find the answer on "what is the best way to divide management and VMs traffic" in failover cluster with hyper-v on Win 2012 OS

I have 2 physical NICs in a team

I've created a virtual NICs in the management operating system for Management, Cluster, Migration and Storage

Add-VMNetworkAdapter –ManagementOS –Name Management –SwitchName TeamSwitch
Add-VMNetworkAdapter –ManagementOS –Name Cluster –SwitchName TeamSwitch
Add-VMNetworkAdapter –ManagementOS –Name Migration –SwitchName TeamSwitch
Add-VMNetworkAdapter –ManagementOS –Name Storage –SwitchName TeamSwitch

I've used this blog

http://blogs.technet.com/b/josebda/archive/2013/03/30/q-amp-a-i-only-have-two-nics-on-my-hyper-v-host-should-i-team-them-or-not.aspx

but when I'm copying file on VM from LAN, traffic goes thru Management adapter

Thanks and sorry for my English

server 2012 hyper-v vSwitch performance is terrible

$

Running an HP DL380 G5 single quad core with 8GB of ram.

OS is on RAID-1 146GB 10k rpm SAS

VM's boot from EqualLogic SAN on 24 900GB 10k rpm SAS via iSCSI at 1Gb/sec (as a test lab)

Host OS is Server 2012 with hyper-v role (all updates)

Client VM's are all server 2012

I have been running bandwidth tests between VM's on the same node and have noticed that no matter what I do I cannot get the vSwitch to push more than about 2.0Gb/sec between VM's. I am using iperf as a test to generate bandwidth.

I have tried between 2 VM's, I have tried 3 VM's pushing to 1 VM, I have tried 2 to 2, but no matter how I structure the tests the overall aggregate bandwidth between all the VM's never exceeds ~2Gb/sec over the vSwitch.

Suppoesdly the vSwitch is a virtual 10Gb/sec adapter so I'm wondering why I can only push 20% of that traffic. I'm using iperf because it doesn't require disk I/O to test bandwidth because I want to eliminate the client OS or the SAN as the bottleneck.

Can anyone provide help on getting more performance out of the vSwitch?

Trouble getting virtual NICs to appear in VM

Hi all. We have the latest release of HyperV running on fully patched Windows 2008 host machine. We have 3 physical dual port NICs in the machine and we are having trouble creating virtual networks and having them show inside a guest VM.

Our guest VM is running Windows 2003 Web, SP2. No network adapters show up under Control Panel -> network connections

In device manager I notice a yellow exclamation under Other Devices. The details for this are as follows:

Unknown Device - Location: on Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to ISA bridge (ISA)

The drivers for this device are not installed.

Details: Value - ACPI\VMBUS\4&4B018EB&0

Here are the steps we took to create the virtual network:

1) Open Virtual Network Manager
2) Click Add on "External" virtual network
3) Select Intel Pro/1000 PT Dual Port Server Adapter (unused on host machine, but cable is plugged in) - External
4) Click OK to create virtual network
5) Go to Settings of VM and click Network Adapter
6) Select the virtual network we just created under Network: in Settings
7) Configure IP address etc on new VIRTUAL nic created on host machine. I have confirmed Hyper-V removed all checkboxes under properties of the physical NIC minus Microsoft Virtual Network Switch Protocol

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Is there some sort of driver/patch I am missing? Any help would be much appreciated!

RemoteFX GPU in 2012R2 (RD Session Host)

$

Kind of a dumb question for RDS guru's since there isn't much documentation on Remote FX in Server 2012 R2

Is there an advantage of adding a GPU to RD Session host running Server 2012 R2 (physical server - no hyper V) to improve performance of graphics in Remote Apps such as Word / Powerpoint?

Or is it better to upgrade the CPU instead?

Enable/Disable VMQ Setting on VMs in Server 2012 - Hyper-V

$

We have a cluster of 2012 Server Core where each one holds about 40 VMs. We are concerned that the limited VMQs on each node are full of low priority VMs instead of those that could really benefit.  Indeed, this article says VMQs should be treated as a scarce resource: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg162704(v=ws.10).aspx

However, it is not clear how to choose which VMs get to use the VMQ. There is a check box in VM Settings > Network Adapter > Hardware Acceleration called "Enable virtual machine queue", and it appears to be checked on all VMs by default. I can uncheck it manually, but I cannot find a PowerShell way to affect that checkbox.  We also have SCVMM 2012 SP1, and I cannot find any way to choose VMs to use VMQ there either.

So if it is true that I need to choose the VMs using VMQ, how can I do it with PowerShell, since there are so many VMs?

Multiple SSL Certificates for Hyper-V Replica

$

Hi, Good Day!

We are setting up a replica DR environment. There are three primary servers and one Replica Server operating in workgroup environment. We have used steps described in one of the MS KBs to generate SSL certificate using Makecert.exe.

We configure Replica Server > choose certificate and then click OK. Let's say the certificate name is "ReplicaSSL".

We enable replication for a VM on one of the primary servers > specific Replica Server Name > choose "ReplicaSSL" as the SSL certificate. The VM replicates fine.

We go to another primary server > enable Replication for a VM > choose "ReplicaSSL" as the certificate but the wizard fails to enable the replication.

Question: How do we enable one SSL certificate for multiple primary servers or is there any better way to do it? We generated 3 SSL for three primary servers and imported on Replica Server.

Thank you very much!

Windows 8.1 - Hyper-V Virtual Switch fails to create

$

I'm running into a problem with creating a new virtual switch on my Windows 8.1 RTM box. Frist time attempt at Hyper-V on this system.

The error I get is as follows:

Error applying Virtual Switch Properties changes

Failed while creating virtual Ethernet switch.

switch create failed, name= 'B57B7B7B-64314AF5-AB8F-4521CBAA9FFBA', friendly name = 'New Virtual Switch': The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)

The steps I have taken to try and resolve this issue.

1. Uninstall and reinstall Hyper-V...numerous times - no change.

2. Uninstall Hyper-V, reboot, uninstall NIC, reboot, reinstall NIC, reboot, reinstall Hyper, reboot - no change.

3. Uninstall it all again. Get new NIC drivers, for ASUS Sabertooth 990FX, first gen.  Reinstall it all again - no change.

4. Updated BIOS, and check for virtualization, and DEP are enabled. - no change.

5. User powershell to create virtual switch - no change.

6. Tried resetting Hyper-V networking using the netcfg commands posted here, failed, file not found.

Any help to resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Sean

Recovering VHDs

$

I have a problem whereby the SAN which was storing all my virtual machines developed a problem. I had to backup everything on the volume, delete it, recreate it and move everything back. During this, I think my VHDs became corrupted or developed problems. I have been trying to add them to new VMs in order to bring everything back online but am not having a lot of luck in doing so.

Hyper-V reports that one VHD is corrupt and doesn't seem to recognise the others. When I bring the server back online (this is my file server and has 8 disks) the drives show as offline in disk manager with blank grey spaces. When I try and bring them online they say "invalid". I can't bring the disks online or initialise them, leading me to believe they may be corrupt too.

Is there a way to recover from this? My backups are obviously not good.

Question on switch creation

Hi All,

I have a Hyper-V server (2012 R2), with two NICs. One is with a public IP (thus for RDP'ing to the server, internet access, etc), the other on a private IP and thus for communication within the LAN.

My goal is now to create two switches, one for inter-host communication on private IPs, and one for internet access. Do I do each of these respectively on the corresponding NICs (external switch bound to the NIC which has public IP, etc)?

Thanks

Hello, my friends,

I am using the ISO ( 9200.16384.WIN8_RTM.120725 - 1247_X64FRE_SERVERHYPERCORE_EN -US- HRM_SHV_X64FRE_EN - US_DV5 ) . This is HyperV Server 2012 Core version valid or am I using some RTM version? ( Do not want to use the R2 also want to use the latest stable summer )

When using a HyperV Cluster with a network card (no heartbeat network ) , what are the risks that I have ? With haertbeat what I get ?

Can I use two NICs in different VLANs connected to a nic teaming ?
If yes , in this case to add a VM vSwitch this I need to set the VLANID the VM settings so that it directs traffic for the network adapter that is in VLAN I want to communicate?

In this case the doors of swtich device must be in trunk ? ( the two ports used for this teamig nic ? each port on a different vlan . )

If I want this vSwitch to create a local network on the physical host , I need to set the VLAN ID as well, correct?

Excuse me for automatic translation .

Thanks to all friends .
