Is Hyper-V Smart Paging supported for linux virtual machines?

hyper-v host netwok

hello

I have installed Windows 2012 R2 with Hyper-V role with two physical network cards (intel 1, intel 2) connected to the same physical switch, i know that the best practise is to dedicate one network card (intel 1) to the VMs, so i create a new virtual external switch based on network card (intel 1) and i do not check the "The Allow management operating system to share this network adapter ".

So for the second network card (intel 2) which is dedicated to manage the host remotely, i have to create a virtual external switch based on network card (intel 2) ... do i check the "The Allow management operating system to share this network adapter" or not.

thank you

Disable NIC on Host but enable in VM - Hyper-V Core 2012

I have multiple NICs on my hyper-V Host.

I am running a router/firewall as a VM on this host. This is my perimeter/border protection.

The issue I am having is that one of the NICs on the Hyper-V host is dedicated to WAN connectivity for this VM. I want to somehow disable this NIC on the host but have it enabled for the router/firewall VM. Is this possible?

So logically, what I want is: Modem --> Router/Firewall VM --> rest of network (including other NICs on Hyper-V host)

Currently it is: Modem --> Hyper-V Host NIC --> Router/Firewall VM --> rest of network (including other NICs on Hyper-V host)

Obviously without doing anything, the host got assigned an IP and it had no firewall in front of it. I have since given it a static IP (10.0.0.24/255.255.255.224), but is there any way to just disable it on the host level?

Thanks!

Hyper-V Events-- 10170 and 16010

Hi,

On a windows 2012 when I take a backup, I see error in windows event viewer, though my backup job is successful.

"Requester reported unsuccessful backup for the virtual machine '<computerName>'. (Virtual machine ID)"

The exact snippet of the event message is as below.

Error 11/28/2013 8:39:42 PM Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS 16010 None The operation failed. Warning 11/28/2013 8:39:42 PM Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS 10170 None Requester reported unsuccessful backup for the virtual machine 'ABC-Eng01'. (Virtual machine ID XXXXXXXX-YYYY-DDDD-DDDD-BBBBBBBBBBBB)

What does this event message mean?

Does it mean that my backups aren't successful? Do I need to take care of something in my setup so as not to see this error events?

Is there any known windows issues already logged around this? I dont find any KB article for the same.

Thanks,

Santosh

hyper-v 2012 r2 teaming bug?

$

2 hyper-v host with 5 nics each.  Shared stored is a iSCSI SAN.

With hyper-v 2012 no issues with teaming.  3 nic team for vmswitch no vlan, Live migration vlan 10, cluster heartbeat vlan 20, and host management IP no vlan.  When I created the vmswitch I stated allowmanagmentos 1.  Works great.

hyper-v 2012 r2 not so much.  Whenever I create the same team configuration as above I loose all IP communication, both in the vmswitch and management IP.  I soon as I break the team and assign the vmswitch to a standard NIC the VM's can get an IP address and the other NICs that were in the team get a DHCP address.  Recreating the team I again loose all IP communication.

Any help would be appreciated.

Network Virtualization and Gateway

Hi,

We have configured a VM running on Hyper-V and connected to a Hyper-V virtual switch. VM is using 10.x network and there is no gateway configured for the VM. We have configured Hyper-V Network Virtualization and setup necessary routing rules. The host PA IP is 180.170.20.68 and gateway IP is 180.170.20.1.

Problem is that from within the VM, we cannot ping 180.170.20.1 gateway IP Address or any other network devices.

Do we need to assign gateway IP to the VM or Lookup Records are incorrect?

Another question is: -NextHop switch is available to both CustomerRoute PowerShell cmdlet and ProviderRoute cmdlet. What is the difference between these two?

Thank You,

A

Optimizing Hyper-V - Server 2012 R2

I find myself using Hyper-V for work more and more for our customers so I decided I would put a build in place at my home as I find breaking and fixing my own setup without fear of hurting the production of a customer helps me to learn the most in these kind of situations. With that being said I have put a server in place and setup VMs but I am now looking for optimization and best practices for my specific situation which tends to be a common one among my customers.

My Setup:

Server 2012 R2 - Datacenter (Host) - Running HV - sharing a very large raid 6

Server 2012 R2 - Standard (DC VM) - DNS, DHCP, AD etc.

Server 2012 R2 - Standard (Cloud Server) This is basically my desktop which I use for everyday tasks browsing, email, and productivity work etc.

My understanding of HV is getting better however, I must admit that I am very much a novice and what I have learned is purely trial and error and what I have learned on the web. I have spent hours scouring for information but feel my setup could be optimized. I wanted all the VMs to have internet access so I have three NICs (one for each VM and the host) probably overkill. My reading has brought me to believe the only way a VM can have internet access is if it is setup as external meaning one VM per NIC. If this is not the case I would love to hear the real difference in External, private, and internal. My understanding is private can only see other VMs, internal can only see machines on the private lan, and external can access the web.

My question:

My RDP sessions tend to disconnect for a short period of time when when the NIC traffic rises. For example, I start an FTP transfer at about 50 Mb/s, I can expect when I do this that I will disconnect from the RDP sessions for about 30 secs and reconnect. This is true for both VMs but not for the host machine. I feel it may perhaps be due to either the NIC driver or the advanced settings on the NIC as I have not really changed their default settings and perhaps need to be adjusted for use with a VM. I have read about turning off tcp offloading and then read to leave it on so I am a bit confused here. I would love to get a definitive answer on NIC settings for a VM.

Lastly, I have the host and both VMs on a single SSD. I started with the VMs on a standard disk of their own but the performance was poor and all seemed to work better when I moved them to the SSD. I know it is best practice to have them on their own disk but I imagine this is assuming the performance of the disks are all the same. As said, the VMs perform much better on the SSD with the host since I do not have another SSD of sufficient size to move them to. Could the IO be causing my disconnects? I would imagine though the SSD is faster then whatever my internet is bringing in so I cannot imagine this would cause the problem.

I appreciate anyone's time in pointing me in the right directions.

Hyper-V - Not enough storage is available to complete this operation

Hi,

I'm running Hyper-V on Windows 8.1.

This is what I've one so far. I installed Hyper-V and everything was working fine (i.e. Hyper-V started and I was able to create a VM).

Then when I created a new VM I ran out of diskspace, and that seems to be where the problem started. I resolved my disk space issue. However when I tried to start the Hyper-V service I'm getting:

error 14: Not enough storage is available to complete this operation.

I tried removing Hyper-V and then reinstall Hyper-V but this still gives the same error. I'm guessing that something got corrupted when I ran out of disk space, however a reinstall should have done the trick.

The event log ( System log) only shows :

The Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service terminated with the following error:

Not enough storage is available to complete this operation.

Any ideas?

Very slow opening VM settings page when hypervisor has lots of logical disks.

I am running a LUN-to-VM mapping with between 256\512 LUNs per hypervisor (please don’t lecture me, this is an experiment with custom orchestration software we have written and a 3rd party SAN, and it's working great in almost all ways).

One of the only scaling problems I have seen is in the Hyper-V manager (GUI only) when opening the settings for any VM.

It can take between 5-10 minutes to open the settings page. I presume this is because the GUI is enumerating all possible volumes as potential selections for a pass-through disk? The GUI must be doing it in a pretty inefficient way, as I can enumerate the volumes  via diskpart  in seconds, or refresh all iSCSI targets system-wide in between 6-11 seconds.

It is feasible this could be tweaked in any way?

Cheers.

Redundent site Setup

Hello Everyone

We are migrating from a manly physical environment with a few stand alone virtual hosts to a fully virtual environment over the next few months.

Were currently putting into place the supporting network infrastructure and had a question on how Guests handle migration between sites.

For example a guest which currently resides on a host in site 1 has an IP in the range of 192.168.5.0/25

If this guest is migrated to a host in site 2 the IP rage in that site is 192.168.5.128/25

normally IP addresses would be set statically on the host and would therefore be invalid on site 2. Does VMM have routines to support this? and could you point me in the direction of some documentation.

Thanks

Adam

Hyper-V General Best Practices

$

I have worked some years with physical machines; but I am approaching now Virtual Environments and I don't understand well how to configure a virtual environment.

I am interested in installing Virtual environments in little firms that often can only afford a single server with some virtual machines

So Here are the points I am currently trying to understand:

Storage:

If I have a raid 10 with enough disks (as 6); I think that in this case I have not to split the disk in volumes because the performances (I/O) are the ones of the raid controller and disks.

But is it better to make two different Raid groups (4 disks + 2 disks) or make only one raid group?

Virtual Machines:

If I have a single volume (raid 10) and have Exchange server and sql and other software; it is better to create a single virtual machine or smaller dedicated virtual machines.

I think (but I really don't know) that a single bigger virtual machine should have better performances while dedicated virtual machines are better if I want to move part of the load on another physical server.

Location of Virtual Machines:

If I have only one volume (Raid 10) I think that it is not important where I place stuff; but it is important to avoid automatic adjustment done by the operating system; such as:

Make a swap file that is of fixed size and in a defragmented area (all blocks contiguous)

Make the Vitual disk of fixed size

Allocate a fixed RAM for each virtual machines; etc.

In my vision a virtual machine is something that allows me to be hardware independent (in case of hardware malfunction) and allows me to backup all the server (not only the data); but not more (for the environment I am working in); I have seen several shadow-copy backup solutions that invalidate my ideas; what you suggest for such little environments; virtual machines or physical machines (we are talking  of environments that can be serviced by SBS).

Any suggestion is appreciated

Thank you and Regards

VM's Stuck in "Backing Up..." State

$

We are using System Center DPM 2012 SP1 to backup our Server 2012 Hyper-V Cluster and sometimes we have VM's that are stuck in a state of "backing up..." on the Hyper-V manager however DPM and the VSS Writers both say that the backups have failed. We are unable to migrate or shutdown the guest VM's that are stuck in this state.

So far the only workaround we have found is to fail all the VM's that are not in this status to another host, then kill the cluster service on the host with the stuck VM's to force them to migrate to another host which also causes an unexpected reboot of the guest.

I was wondering if there is any other method to cancel or get the VMs out of this state and/or fail them over to another host without having to kill the cluster service?

Hyper-V installation and setup of WSE 2012 R2 virtual machine

$

My goal was to setup a virtualized environment running two VMs, one Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 and one Linux.

I have installed Hyper-V, but note that it only has a command line shell.  That might work for me.  My one windows 8.1 machine in the house is not Pro, and my brief home experience with WSE preview and having a domain was not very satisfying, so I am thinking about not upgrading to Pro to avoid having to join a domain.

Questions:

1. Is installing Hyper-V as the initial install and then installing two VMs different than installing Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 and enabling Hyper-V and installing a VM from there?   Am I correct in assuming that in the first case Hyper-V is the host OS whereas in the second case WSE is the host and is not running in a VM.

2. The remote server administration tools for Windows 8.1 will not install on my Windows 8.1 machine.  Is that because when the requirements say Windows 8.1 they mean 8.1 Pro?

3. Is there any place with a step by step for creating a VM and installing WSE 2012 R2 in Hyper-V?  I am running it on a Xeon E3 and 16 GB of RAM, one boot SSD and 8 HDs.   I think I can try the power script commands to create the VM, but don't then know how to proceed to install on the created VM...

THanks!

MS Hyper-V and USB Ports routed fom Host to one Client

Hi,

we did setup Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1 with only the Hyper-V Roll. In all its working fine. Into the BIOS Settings we have enabled Intel VT-d for i/o Support. But now we are looking for the right way to arrange a routing of some USB Devices (Printers) from the Hyper-V Host to an Hyper-V Client (MS SBS 2011). I haven't found any Information about this. Not if it it possibe generally, nore how to configure it out.

Maybe any Guy can help us with a link where is told how to set it up.

Many Thanks and best regards

Use only 3 of 4 monitors when connecting to enhanced session.

I have 4 displays connected to my physical machine(1 over 3). RIght now I am trying to test multiple monitor functionality within a VM. I am connecting using Enhanced Session and can successfully use all available displays. However, I would like to only use the lower 3 displays for the VM, and use the upper display for the host machine. I have attempted to alter this setting

Local Computer Policy>Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Remote Desktop Services>Remote Desktop Session Host>Remote Session Environment>Limit Number Of Monitors=3

However, when I connect using this, it will only use a single monitor. When I un-configure this policy, or set the limit to 4, it will use all monitors.  I want to be able to use all 3 lower monitors, and leave the top monitor for the client system. Can anyone test this and confirm functionality, or suggest an alternate method?

Hyper-V 2012 replica giving timeouts

$

We have two Hyper-V clusters in two separate datacenters. These datacenters are connected with a 100 Mbit/s redundant connection. Redundancies is achieved with spanning tree and the two sites share the same private IP range. In both datacenters are two domain controllers in the same domain. We use Hyper-V replica to replicate about 50 VM's to the secondary datacenter. We use the primary datacenter as our production environment and the secondary datacenter as our failover location, backup location and test environment. When everything was working and all the servers were being replicated the bandwidth that was used over the WAN connection was about 10 - 15 Mbit/s. We use http for replication.

After a failure, which was caused by a rebooting Hyper-V host (wrong configured automated update settings) several VM's stopped with their replication. After that incident I could not get the replication working properly. I get timeouts errors and other error messages indicating that there is no connection at that moment. The replication works but not all the time. Replication status are going to warning when more than 20% of the replication cycles are missed. Eventually we even see a status of critical on several VM's. After that we have to resume the replication manually.

I have the feeling that this is caused by the limited amount of bandwidth that is available. I had to do a complete new initial replication for some servers because these servers would no longer resume replication after a manual resume command. Even the resynchronization command did not work, so I had to stop the replication and start again. The problem is that the initial replication uses all the available bandwidth and I have the feeling that there is not enough bandwidth left for the regular replication of the other VM's and that this is causing the timeouts. I am however not sure about this theory. Is it possible that initial replications drain so much bandwidth that regular replications are getting timeouts or is there a mechanism that prevents this. Are there possible other causes of these problems?

below you see the error messages that I frequently get. I get these errors on VM's with a normal replication status as well as VM's with a warning status or a critical status.

DVD attaching but not reading data

Upgraded my Host servers from server 2012 to server 2012 R2. Created new guest image with ISO which is datacenter 2012 R2 operation system for guest. When I tried from the virtual server I had to first install a DVD on SCSI. These are generation 2 Hyper-v servers which do not use IDE. The DVD installed and I checked to ensure that no other hyper-v server on the host was using the physical DVD. I can also see it in File explorer and map to the physical DVD. However, when I place a DVD with data in the physical player the hype-v server does not show anything and lists none. Also you can not select to use the physical DVD as before in generation one hyper-v servers in the settings area. What am I missing?

Hyper-V hangs when accessing a Cluster Shared Volume

$

Hi,

We have 2 windows server 2012 Datacenter member of windows cluster, servers are running hyper-v. the 2 nodes hang once we try to access CSV volume (c:\clusterstorage\volume1) when i tried to do live migration from node1 for virtual servers and move it to node2 it fails. also when i restart node1 the server keep on "Please wait for the System Event Notification Service"

cluster events:

1- Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine' (resource type 'Virtual Machine', DLL 'vmclusres.dll') did not respond to a request in a timely fashion. Cluster health detection will attempt to automatically recover by terminating the Resource Hosting Subsystem (RHS) process running this resource. This may affect other resources hosted in the same RHS process. The resources will then be restarted.

The suspect resource 'Virtual Machine' will be marked to run in an isolated RHS process to avoid impacting multiple resources in the event that this resource failure occurs again. Please ensure services, applications, or underlying infrastructure (such as storage or networking) associated with the suspect resource is functioning properly.

2- The cluster Resource Hosting Subsystem (RHS) stopped unexpectedly. An attempt will be made to restart it. This is usually associated with recovery of a crashed or deadlocked resource.  Please determine which resource and resource DLL is causing the issue and verify it is functioning properly

3- Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine Configuration' of type 'Virtual Machine Configuration' in clustered role  failed.

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

4- Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('Cluster Disk 2') is no longer accessible from this cluster node because of error 'ERROR_TIMEOUT(1460)'. Please troubleshoot this node's connectivity to the storage device and network connectivity.

5- Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('Cluster Disk 2') is no longer available on this node because of 'STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT(c00000b5)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.

Verifying if the disk is Passthrough / VHD / VHDx

While working on a VM, is there a way to identify if the storage is PassThrough, VHD or VHDx?

Possibly through WMI / PSH and something that can also be executed remotely.
