2012 HyperV - guest vm's are not discoverable via network browsing

I've set up a Windows 2012 HyperV parent with 2x Windows 2008 R2 guests (LOB requirement).  The domain controller is on real steel and all are domain connected.  All can be pinged and shares on the two guest OS's can be reached by UNC paths.  The Network Sharing appropriate network discovery checkboxes have been checked.  After some googlefu I've also now enabled and have running the Computer Browser service.  Although no WINS server had been in the domain I even added one yesterday and configured the two server's NICs so that they use it; consequently they are listed as active reservations.  The DHCP options for the network have been appropreately added.  Of course I've installed the latest updates on all OS's and the vm's have the latest integrated components installed.  The Parent is using NIC Teaming and on each vm I've drilling into the adapter settings to see if any related settings are there and now are.  All hoops that I can imagine jumping through have been done.

What else?  What stone haven't I turned over?

VHD corruption issues

I am getting a very frustrating problem with with corruption on the Vm's virtual disks.  we have had numerous instances where a virtual machine has reported problems and upon restart it won't boot up until you have run windows repair tool at boot up and in some cases it hoses the Vm entirely.  We have 2 Dell R515's connected to a Netgears ReadyNAS 4200 over a 10gb fibre, so bandwitdh can't be an issue.  On the last one the host reported several iscsiprt errors and it appears to be related (ie the errors occurred between the machine being ok and the machine not being ok).  My question is Has anyone else experienced these type of issues with similar equipment?

At the moment we are in the process of installing HDD's in the server to run the VM's on DAS, bue this is by no means an ideal solution as we have invested a lot of money in this.  we would like to get this configuration running but need it to be rock solid.

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

NAT ing multiple VM's to seperate physical NICS

I have 3 host servers with 4 addictional NICs so that i have can have a 1 to 1 relationship between the vm and the physical NIC.  I have been able to create a seperate external virtual network and map those to the corresponding NIC.  That has been working great, however the company that i work for is implemeting 802.1x, and they are also using it as a billing mechanism.  So my problem with the scenario above is that i get "double" billed by the accounting group because my VM i configure for .1x and I leave the port on the server untouched.  It fails .1x, i could create a MAB object for it.  Again in this scenario i get hit twice for one machine.  I would like to NAT these, but i don't think I can NAT them in a 1 to 1 relationship,  which I want to keep.  does anyone out there have any suggestions?

Hyper-V 2012, removed from domain, lost VM's

I have a Hyper-V 2012 server, it was running my DC and VMM 2012.  I removed the Hyper-V server from the domain and rebooted.  The Hyper-V host was being managed by VMM.  Doesnt appear any of the VM's started back up automatically.

Now I can't see any of my VM's in Hyper-V manager.  I know I can get them back by creating a new VM and pointing them to the existing VM HD's or even copy the contents of the XML files and copy to the new guid XML, etc etc.

Is there an easier way to recover in my siguation?

VHDMP event ID 3 while running Windows Server Backup (wbadmin)

Hi

I am running Hyper-V on WS2008 R2. I've applied the registry fix for FsDepends.sys as it is suggested in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2013544 but I'm still getting VHDMP enent ID 3 errors every time when I run wbadmin:

Level Date and Time Source Event ID Task Category
Error 13/03/2010 01:00:53 Microsoft-Windows-VHDMP 3 None Failed to surface VHD \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy113\VHDS\VM05-###### Hard Disk.vhd. Error status 0xC0000061.
Error 13/03/2010 01:00:41 Microsoft-Windows-VHDMP 3 None Failed to surface VHD \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy113\VHDS\VM01-###### Hard Disk.vhd. Error status 0xC0000061.
Error 13/03/2010 01:00:32 Microsoft-Windows-VHDMP 3 None Failed to surface VHD \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy113\VHDS\VM03-###### Hard Disk.vhd. Error status 0xC0000061.

The fix that registers the Hyper-V VSS writer is also applied.

VM01 is WS2008 R2 virtual machine
VM03 is WS2003 R2 SP2 virtual machine
VM05 is WS2003 SP2 virtual machine

The integration services are installed on all VMs.

The VHD drives are located on iSCSI connected Dell MD3000i array.

Does anyone have a clue what those errors mean?

Thanks.

Trying to manage Hyper-V server from Windows Server 2012

I've been trying to do a test of of Hyper-V 3 for our environment, and I've got to the step where I'm setting up the second of five physical servers allocated for this trial.

The first server was installed with Windows Server 2012 to give us a management platform, and then the Hyper-V role was added.  That seems to be working OK.  The second server, I have installed using the Hyper-V Server bare metal option.  That seemed to go OK as well, although of course it lacks the management console.

So the next step is to add the second machine ("hv2") to the Server Manager of the first machine ("hv1").  I did that, and it clearly sees it, but I just get an error under "Manageability" about "WinRM Negotiate authentication error."  However, I'm not getting an option to fix it and searching that text hasn't turned up any good results.  It does sort of make sense that it wouldn't be able to authenticate, because it didn't ask for access credentials at any point.  So how could it?  But I don't know what to do to fix it.

For example, in our existing vSphere cluster, you just enter the new host's admin username and password into vCenter and it temporarily uses those to go in and create the internal credentials it needs to manage that host on a permanent basis.  What is the equivalent step here?

Thanks for any help!

Hi Everyone,

I have a VM running on Hyper V Serer 2008 Enterprise SP2. The guest OS is also running Server 2008 SP2

My VM is blue screening on startup. Same happens if I try and boot into safe mode. One of the messages displayed on the blue screen is  suggestion to run Chkdsk /F.

My question is how can I run Chkdsk on a VM.

BTW Booting into safe mode with  command prompt also blue screen.

Advice welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

recently we have installed hyperv 2008 r2

we have assigned LUN's From EMC San Storage we have not installed EMC powerpath software we r using EMC non power path we r using 2 FC nic's on each server which means it has 4 paths

my question is how to identify how many paths r there for my assigned LUN's on HyperV 2008 R2

as per EMC we can identify it using EMC powerpaath software but as we install the software  it gives us Blue Screen of death (BSOD)

Need to release/renew IP every time I change to new wifi network

$

I'm running Server 2012 with a Hyper-V VM of Windows 8.  As it's on a laptop, I've installed the wifi feature and take the laptop to work at times.

My server 2012 host machine is set to connect to my home wifi with DHCP, and when I reach work I connect to my work wifi.

My problem is that whenever I connect to a new wifi network (be it work, home, café etc), I get a "limited" connection, and need to deactivate/reactive the NIC on BOTH the host and then the VM (or release/renew the ipconfig).  In other words, the existing IP and gateway from the last wifi network remain, even when connecting to my new wifi network.

Both the NICs are set to default "auto" (DHCP).

Any thoughts would be appreciated.  Thanks

Delete all snapshots while retaining the "NOW" one as only one

$

Hello,

we have a virtual server where we're doing a troublesome installation of a product. We made some snapshots, then other ones after that, then reverted a couple of times and created new snapshot subtrees, and so on. Now we have a situation where we would like to delete all snapshots and merge the "NOW" condition to the original VHD, to have a clean state, because we installed all we had to and are happy with it. That way we'd free space and could continue to make new snapshots while installing another application on the same server.

What I did so far was to delete all the snapshots (via Hyper-V manager) that weren't directly linked to the "NOW" state we want to keep. After that, we have a situation like in this picture:

On the sotrage we have one VHD file and two AVHD files. So, how do I do it? How do I keep the "NOW" state and make it the only available state, thus deleting all the other states/snapshots? I read the instructions multiple times, but I am simply not sure because once before I tried something similar and I ended up with an unusable VHD.

Thanks for the help!

Hyper-V 2012 vs Windows Server 2012 w/ Hyper-V Role

I was looking online and it looks like clustering and all the big bad ESX features that Microsoft touts as having in their VM product only work in Server w/ Hyper-V role and won't work with just the Hyper-V server. Am I reading their site wrong? Can someone point me towards the correct information if that isn't right?

2 nics 2 subnets 2 internet connections

Situation: Physical-- Server with multiple NICs: NIC 1 set w/ip for subnet 1, NIC two set for subnet 2. Subnet 1 gateway has access to production LAN and internet . Subnet 2 has access to internet and not to subnet1.

Situation: Logical-- VM's on server, some are on subnet 1 and have virtual switch set up using nic 1 for that access (physical NIC 1 for host is used for this).  [Question one: In total context, is this a good idea? Should I set aside the Physical NIC for the host only and use a third nic on same subnet for this.] Some VM's are on subnet 2, using physical NIC 2, which I've assigned an ip address on that subnet and used with hyper-v network swtich to give access. No internet access: [MAIN question: No internet access. g/w of second subnet disappears. consistency of nics very odd. help.

Goal: VM's on two subnets with segregated internet access. Those on subnet 1 see lan and internet and subnet 2*, those on subnet two see only internet. Capability for static IP's on subnet two are absolutely essential.

Running WINSERVER2k12 RC Build 8400

General question I can't find an answer to:

When Import a VM via Hyper-V Manager GUI, after the VM folder is located and the VM is selected, at step 3 I am asked to "Choose Import Type" and I have three options to choose from:
•Register the VM in-place
•Restore the VM
•Copy the VM

Can anyone please explain to me the difference between  the options?

Thanks!

Cannot find driver for Virtual HBA on W2008R2 Guest

$

Hello everyone.... this should be a simple fix:

I have installed a fresh version of Windows Server 2012 Datacenter on a Physical Server.  The server is connected and communicates with the SAN, and has the Hyper-V role installed.  Using the "Virtual SAN Manager" in the Hyper-V manager, I have created two Virtual Fibre Channels.  (According to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831413.aspx, Windows 2008 R2 is a supported guest which can connect to the SAN directly.)

Now, if I create a new virutal machine running Windows Server 2012 and open device manager, I see this (which is good):

On the W2012 VM, I can connect directly to disks on the SAN.

If I create a new virtual machine running Windows Server 2008 R2 w/SP1, and open device manager, I see this (which is bad):

With the exception of .NET 4.0, I have installed every available update from the Windows Update and Microsoft update site on the W2008R2 machine.  The Device manager cannot find drivers on it's own.

Does anyone know where I can get the drivers for this?

Thanks!

Forch
