Redundant storage for Hype-v Failover Cluster

0
0

Hi all

I have been using QNAP storage device as the storage for my Hyper-v fail over cluster successfully. I currently have two  Hyper-V servers in the cluster. Each server is conneted to QNAP via iscsi. The cluster shared volume which include all my virtual machines  is located in one QNAP storage device as a 'LUN'. Generally speaking, it is a IP SAN environment.

I now want to create a fully redundant setup using a Hyper-V cluster consisting of two clustered Hyper-V servers, two 10GB switches and two QNAP device. The final result would be a configuration in which ANY single device could fail but the overall system would continue to function. The redundant switches are easy to set up. Now the problem is I want two QNAP device can synchronize with each other in real time. So that when one QNAP device is down, the other can take over immediately or within 24 hours by manual action.

Unfortunately I have got the reply from QNAP support that their products can not support this either by LUN snapshot or LUN backup/restore.

So my question is what other products I can consider for storage redundancy? Cheap and suitable for company below 1000 users and service downtime within 24 hours is allowed. IP SAN storage or SAN storage both will be considered.

Any direction or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

HyperV: backup failing with offline Hard drive

Platform: Server 2008 R2 with Hyper V enabled
VM'S (2): SBS 2011 and Server 2008R2 with SharePoint and SQL Standard installed

Hello there
We configured the server with an offline hard drive attached to the SBS server to run its own backups for efficient recovery, and it works well.  We have had problems recently backing up the Host server using the native Windows backup. The consistent error we receive is:

------------------------------
Event ID 521

The backup operation that started at '‎2012‎-‎09‎-‎24T12:01:22.752000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348001'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
---------------------------------

As this error is generic in nature we found the following error in the Hyper-V-VMMS event log:

-------------------------
Log Name:      Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS-Admin
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS
Date:          24/09/2012 10:17:46 PM
Event ID:      10107
Task Category: None
Level:         Warning|
Keywords:
User:          SYSTEM
Computer:      VMHOST

Description:
One or more physical disks are attached to virtual machine 'SBServer'. Back up programs that use the Hyper-V VSS writer cannot back up volumes that are attached to virtual machines as physical disks. To avoid potential data loss, use another method to back up the data on the physical disks. If you restore the data on this virtual machine, make sure to check the data of the physical disk for integrity. (Virtual machine ID 2312B5E9-BA77-4499-AF2A-25755DDE7C84)
--------------------------

The information on offline hard drives used for this purpose is fuzzy. The question we have is: will or could an offline hard drive configured in this way cause the native backup on the VM Host to fail?

Many Thanks

Promiscuous mode in hyper-v server 2008 R2

OS - Server 2008 R2 SP1 with Hyper-V installed

Hi there...I would like to see traffic captured and sent to a loging server in the Hyper-V which needs promiscuous mode enabled...I have been going through forums...

Its just a doubt...will the VLAN Promiscuous work (in the link - http://www.hyper-v.nu/archives/tag/nic-team/ )

Alternatively, from this link - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/a3c0e8fa-976c-4100-88d7-ceba517d23aa/   -  OID_GEN_CURRENT_PACKET_FILTER doing it pro grammatically. If so, can you please provide me more information how that can be setup...

HyperV VMs go missing

0

We have a HyperV 2008 cluster and every so often the VMs will go missing from the network. You go to the console and it says you can not use your mouse, and the screen is small, you can not resize it and it has no bars to move up and down, so all you can see is the top left hand side of the screen.

We can recue it by migrating it from one machine to the other and its then fine but we would like to stop it happening in the first place. Any one seen this before?

Windows 8 Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management Service

0

So I've recently switched from Server 2008 R2 to Windows 8 Client RTM on my work station thanks to the addition of Hyper-V.  The transition has been fairly smooth with a few exceptions.  Before I get to my problem, my only real complaint is that the RSAT tools are useless for managing older Hyper-V hosts/clusters.

So after two weeks of use I encountered a problem.  I have two VMs created, one Ubuntu 12 and one Windows 7 (for the older RSAT tools :( ).  These machines has been shutdown for a few days and today I tried to start the Windows 7 machine.  I then received an error: "An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine(s)....failed to start worker process: Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer".  For a minute I considered adding my account to the logon as services GPO setting, but I really didn't want to.  So before going that far I tried to restart the "Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management" Service and all of a sudden I was able to start my VMs, YES!!

So I solved my own problem, but my general question:  Are there know problems with Windows 8/Server 2012 Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service?  I am now leery of solving my RSAT tools problem by upgrading my Hyper-V infrastructure to 2012.  I was bleeding edge with 2008 R2 Hyper-V/Clusters and it was a painful year or so of problems until stability was finally found.  Things are great now and I'm not sure I want to rock that boat.

Hyper-V backup of guests - truncating the log

Hello

I've found a few documents about the backing up of Hyper-V guests but can anyone confirm:

Windows server 2008 running 2 VMs:

Exchange 2010
SQL 2008

What is the best practice for backup?

Run internal backups on the guest VMs, then backup the VMs from the host (windows backup/diskshadow)

I'd rather not install an agent on the guest.

Thanks

John

How to list hard disks and locations attached to the given Hyper-V VM using WMI?

I would like to list the hard disks and its corresponding locations (VHD path where it stored) attached to the given Hyper-V VM using WMI. If you provide any C# sample it would be helpful. We can see those information if you right-click the VM and goto settings under IDE and SCSI controller. I want to get this information programmatically.

Thanks.

Vmware or VirtualBox like NAT functionality on Hyper-V 3 under Windows 8 host

Hello,

I use virtualisation for multiple purposes, and unti now I use both Vmware workstation, and virtualbox for that.

I switch to Windows 8, and tyr to use hyper-v on it instead of the above two, but I have a problem with it.

My host system connects to a special network, witch has Cisoco switches with port security configured, so if a MAC address other than my physical machin's MAC appear on the switch port, it disable the whole port. Thts's why I use NAT option in both vmware and virtualbox.

How can I create a functionality like that, in hyper-v 3?

I tryout this solution: https://community.emc.com/docs/DOC-15875 , and it worked for some time, but very instable and most of the time, not work.

Any help are welcomed!

Thank's, Peter

Is fault tolerance possible with Hyper-V Server 2012?

Hi all.

Can the fault tolerance feature be used with Hyper-V Server 3.0 (2012)?  Or do I have to have use Windows Server 2012 with the Hyper-V role and the fault tolerance role enabled?

Thanks!

Assigning IP Address to Virtual Network Adapter

0
0

Here's the scenario:

I'm migrating a physical machine to a virtual machine hosted on Hyper-V Server 2008 R2. The Hyper-V Server is configured with an external virtual switch that is shared with the management operating system. When the VM is started for the first time, a "Microsft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter" gets created inside the VM. This virtual network adapter is set to obtain an IPV4 address via DHCP.

My question is:

Working from the Hyper-V Server, how can I assign an IPV4 address to the virtual NIC when there is no DHCP server on the LAN?

Saved state backup Vs crash consistent

Hi

I'm trying to understand Saved state backups and exactly what happens in a hyper V saved state backup. Is a saved state backup equivalent to taking a crash consistent backup or is it equivalent to taking a cold backup (offline)?

My understanding since VSS is not involved inside the VM is that these are not application consistent backups. What would a user need to do when restoring a saved state backup? would applications inside the VM have some data loss, inconsistent data?

Could somebody please explain the difference between a saved state backup and a crash consistent backup. Is a saved state backup considered equivalent to a crash consistent backup?

Thanks in advance!

I have a machine running 2008 R2 SP1 and all the latest updates that got a BSOD all of a sudden. I don't really find any particular reason so I'm posting it here to see if any of you have an idea.

This is the BSOD message:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x00000018 (0xfffffa8048be5d80, 0xfffffa804a2aadd0, 0x0000000000000001, 0x0000000000000800). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 101612-23415-01.

This is what the dmp bedug gives me:

Arg3: 0000000000000001, Reserved
Arg4: 0000000000000800, Reserved
The reference count of an object is illegal for the current state of the object.
Each time a driver uses a pointer to an object the driver calls a kernel routine
to increment the reference count of the object. When the driver is done with the
pointer the driver calls another kernel routine to decrement the reference count.
Drivers must match calls to the increment and decrement routines. This bugcheck
can occur because an object's reference count goes to zero while there are still
open handles to the object, in which case the fourth parameter indicates the number
of opened handles. It may also occur when the object’s reference count drops below zero
whether or not there are open handles to the object, and in that case the fourth parameter
contains the actual value of the pointer references count.

Windows Server 2012 and hyper-v storage redundancy

0
0

Hi all,

I have been using QNAP storage device (NAS storage) as the storage for my Hyper-v fail over cluster successfully. Now the problem is I want two QNAP device can synchronize the cluster shared volume. Unfortunately QNAP did not provide such solution.

Some experts have suggested me to use third-party software such as Veeam or Starwind, which are good choices. But additional license fee is required.

So what about windows server 2012? In Server 2012 live migration of non-clustered VMs can be done and most importantly two hyper-v server don't have to share the the same volume (previously known as CSV) . This is incredible! So  here are my new plans with Server 2012:

1. Install Windows server 2012 with hyper 3.0 on two hyper-v hosts. Host A connects to NAS A via ISCSI initiator, and host B connects to NAS B via ISCSI initiator.

2. Put 10 VMs host A, and the rest of 30 VMs on host B. No fail over-cluster is configured. (All VMs are running non-critical services)

3. Configure hyper-v replication to make sure that each NAS has a copy of VMs located on the other NAS. (e.g. The replication is done every 30 min)

In the scenario above. If any host A is down, I can still manually boot up the copy of 10 VMs on host B. If NAS A is down, I also can manually boot up the copy of 10 VMs on host B since NAS B hold a copy of these 10 VMs

Am I wrong? If so, please let me know because I believe it is possible to achieve hyper-v ' high availability', though it is done manually

Any advice is appreciated..
