Single VLAN ID out of 5 not working in Hyper-V 2012 Cluster / SCVMM 2012 SP1

I am having strange issues with one specific VLAN in a Hyper-V 2012 cluster.

The cluster has 3 servers, each one has a "Management" adapter and virtual switch for management traffic and "VM Data" adapter and virtual switch for virtual machine traffic. Host access is enabled for the "Management" virtual switch and disabled for the "VM Data" virtual switch. 5 VLANs are enabled for the "VM Data" adapters with IDs 1,2,3,5 and 7. A virtual machine with the virtual network adapter set to untagged or VLAN IDs 1,2,5 or 7 will work just fine, but there's no network access with VLAN ID 3. I triple-checked everything from switch config, host adapter config, virtual switches and the corresponding enabled VLANs, VM networks and logical networks... no luck. This issue happens on all 3 servers of the cluster.

Server 1+2: HP ProLiant DL380 G7 with HP (rebranded Broadcom) NICs

Server 3: Dell PowerEdge 2950 III with Broadcom NetExtreme II NICs

If i directly connect a PC to the switch ports, communicating with VLAN 3 works without a problem.

When enabling host access for the "VM Data" virtual switch with VLAN 3, the host also cannot communicate through the vEthernet adapter. Two virtual machines with VLAN ID 3 on the smae host can communicate with each other.

Assistance would be much appreciated, i ran out of ideas.

Best regards,

BS

VHDX Fails To Mount after copying

I have a Windows 2012 Hyper-v cluster with two nodes. All my VMs and VHDs reside in the CSV on an Equalogic SAN. Recently, I had a data VHD become corrupted on my file server, so I moved all my data from the corrupted VHD to a new VHD. After that was complete and the server was back online, I copied my old corrupted VHD onto an external USB hard drive. Now I am trying to access this old VHD by mounting it directly on the 2012 node and I get an error:

Couldnt mount file

the disk image isnt initialized, contains partitions that arent recognizable, or contains volumes that havent been assigned driver letters. please use the disk management snap-9in to make sure that the disk, partitions, and volumes are in a usable state.

When i go to disk management, I go ahead and set it to online and then it just shows up as a drive with no partition on it. Have i lost this data? what can i do to get this vhd to mount properly again so i can recover some data from it?

Best backup software for a virtual environment

Dear all,

I'll implement a virtual basic infraestructure with 2 VM's with an Hyper-V hipervisor. So, I have experience with Backup Exec in a Physical environment, but I think in Virtual infraestructure the things are a bit different.

Then, what solution would you recommend me to backup the VM's? Veam Backup? Backup Exec?, etc...

Thanks for your help.

Hyper-V speraticaly running WinPE very slow

$

I'm not sure how to go about looking into this for a solution. so I thought I'd ask the community. This maybe the wrong forum to ask.

I am developing our deployment system using MTD/WDS to Hyper-V guests (Win7 x64/x86) network boot from WDS.

Sometimes WinPE runs very very slow. Sometimes it runs almost as fast as a bare metel WinPE boot.
Copy Wim from server and initial Wim boot seem normal.
Its after that WinPE slows to a crawl launching MDT BDD and through out WinPE phase of the deployment.

The things running on the server (Server2008 r2 sp1) is Hyper-V, WDS, MTD, MS SQL Server 2005, DHCP, DNS, WSUS.

I see little to no CPU activity and memory usage is under 30%.

Before I religate this to the "Restart System Because of Unknown Issues" category, I wanted to see if there are known issues to cause such speratic behavior.

Thank You,
Greg.

Synthetic FibreChannel Port: Failed to start reserving resources with Error 'Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.' (0x800705AA)

Hello Gurus

i have installed windows server 2012 RTM with Hyper-V. i already created virtual machine with virtual fiber channel adapter connected to physical one. sometimes when i restart the virtual machine it gets failed to start again and the following error appears in the event viewer of the host:

error id 21502
'Virtual Machine xyz' failed to start.

'xyz' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID number)

'xyz' Synthetic FibreChannel Port: Failed to start reserving resources with Error 'Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.' (0x800705AA). (Virtual machine IDnumber)

'xyz': Operation for virtual port (C003FF18F98C000E) failed with an error: No physical port available to satisfy the request (Virtual machine IDnumber).

error id 1069
Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine xyz' of type 'Virtual Machine' in clustered role 'xyz' failed. The error code was '0x5aa' ('Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.').

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

appreciate your help

I captured packets on Windows Server 2012 when ping the servers teamed interface and the ping succeeds only if you ping from the same subnet. If I ping from another subnet I see the request come in but no reply from network captures.

Hyper-V Wifi VPN without Host

Hi,

This is likely a strange question, and the opposite of what most people would like. I will try to be as clear as possible. Is there a way to allow internet access to a VM on Hyper-V and while not requiring (or allowing) the host access to the connection?

The reason for this is simple. The location from which I am required to connect to the internet requires installation of specific VPN software, which then requires certain security measures be turned on/off. Needless to say I am security conscious and I don't like giving away this type of permission. I would like to spin-up a VM, install their VPN software, and surf the web from there (leaving my Host unmolested). Is there a way to do thiswithout first signing onto the internet from the host? Remember, the whole idea is to not install the VPN software on the Host.

If you have any pointers, or possibly even links to articles regarding this, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your help,

Hyper-V 2012 Trunk to a vmware administrator

$

I'm setting up my first Hyper-V server based on Hyper-V 2012 on a server with 2 10gbit (which I team). In vmware I would create a virtual switch with the two physical nics and add a number of vlans to the virtual switch (and by that creating a trunk). And more important setting the network on a vm, I select one of the vlans I've created.

In Hyper-V the virtual switch part looks the same, but the vlan and vm part is very different as far as I can tell. I can add several vNICs using powershell, but when I want to select a vlan in a vm I only see the virtual switch or I can manually type a vlan ID (which is too error-prone and management wise too time-consuming).

The only doable thing I've seen so far is to create a virtual interface for each vlan (I need about 32 vlans), create a vswitch for each virtual interface, and assign the right vswitch to a vm.

Are there a better way to do it without VMM?

Cheers,

 Anders

Converting VMware files to VHD

$

Hi.

So scenario is:

  • 2 separate domains, no domain trusts and a very slow internet connection on 1 end.
  • I need to mount one VMWare VM from the source domain in Hyper-V in the destination domain, to transfer between the two, the VM or VM files needs to be transported on an external USB disk via mail.
  • I only have Hyper-V (2008 R2 - 2012) available in the destination network and only VMWare ESXi 5.1 available on the source network.
  • The process of getting the VM or VM files should not alter the original VM or VM files in any way.

I gather System Center Virtual Machine Manager and 5nineEasyConverter both requires me to have VMWare and Hyper-V on the same network which I dont. Or am I wrong?

The tool StarWindConverter works on a file level, but I am failing to copy the *.vmdk files to a Windows drive using the PowerCLI from VMWare (The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server error). So I cant run that tool unless I manage to copy the files from the VMWare datastore which I'm stuck on.

I'm looking at MS Virtual Machine Converter (MVMC) but cant gather if this tool will leave the original VM intact or not. Also dont think it works for ESXi 5.1.

The VMDK2VHD isnt going to work unless I manage to copy the vmdk file from the VMware store and seems StarWindConverter works better for most people anyway.

Seems VConverter was discontinued by Dell/Quest.

I'm running out of ideas! I realize this isn't a Microsoft question per say, but I am hoping some forum users might have had similiar needs and found a way to achieve the objective.

Thank you.

Hyper-v 3.0 VM NPIV WWPNs Switching Fabric Ports

$

Hi,

I am using virtual fibre channel adapters on VMs in Hyper-v 3.0 and experiencing an issue with one of my storage providers. Basically, I am sometimes seeing LUNs on a VM that they are not presented to. The storage provider thinks that this is because each time the VM restarts, it appears on a different SAN port ID. If multiple VMs restart simultaneously, there is a chance that one VM's WWPN will log in to a port that was previously used by another VM. The storage provider does not seem to recognize this change and continue to present LUNs to the old PID.

This happens with both Qlogic QMH2572 and Emulex LPe1105 HBAs.  I am using Brocade switches running FOS 7.1.0a or FOS 6.2.2f depending on the hardware.

In the Brocade logs, with 'nsdevlog --show -wwpn <vmWWPN>', I see these events. The "Device Del" corresponds to the shutdown of the VM, and "Port Add" to the startup login.

The question is: is this expected behavior? If so, is the problem on my storage provider's side for not picking up on the "Device Del" event?

Thanks,

Matthew

SR-IOV to guest of different OS?

$

Hosts are 2012 hyper v. I have SR-IOV working great with the 2012 guest.

On the windows 7 guests and the 2008 R2 guests I cannot see the "virtual hardware nic" show up under device manager and the hyper v manager network tab says SR-IOV is degraded.

The NICs are Broadcom dual SFP.

Does SR-IOV not pass to guests other than 2012 server?

Hyper-V replica and iSCSI

Hi All,

Running Server Enterprise 2012.

The issue started with trying to enable replication for Hyper-V replica. A bunch of guest had no issues in enabling replication but then I started to run into issues with servers running iSCSI. After lots of googling I discovered this solution:

http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/282744-windows-2012-hyper-v-replication-issue-with-iscsi

The solution works great for me, except what issues may I encounter down the road by unchecking thebackup (volume snapshot)?  I have done a bunch of looking around and I am now more confused than ever on snapshots.

Thanks.

Migrating VM to another 2012 Hyper-v causes Network Adapter to be unknown

Currently have server 2012 running hyper-v. Installed Server 2008 R2 with all updates and service packs. Exchange 2010 installed. Running good, no issues on a Dell 2950. We now have a Dell R720 running server 2012 with Hyper-v. I shutdown the server and copied the VHD files over to the new server. Configured a new Server in the manager and attached the drives. Server boots fine. But there is not network. If I go into a dos prompt and check with ipconfig the adapter is not there. Going into the device manager I can see that the network device is a unknown device. I have uninstalled and rescanned. Tried updating the drivers and get the error that this device is not configured correctly (Code 1). I have tried removing the adapter and installing the legacy adapter. Same thing. I have also tried installing the integration services. And though it tries to install it it hangs on the Windows Framework. I am unable to boot in safe mode, once I try and logon it reboots. So I am stuck. I have installed Server 2012 as guest and it works fine. I have also downloaded Server 2008 R2 Trial and it also works fine. So I am at a loss as what to do. I can't go into Networking and Sharing center as it hangs when I try. Sounds like its an issue with Integration services but you can't uninstall it. I am at a loss. There is no nic teaming going on. I have a quad broadcom Nic (which doesn't work as a virtual switch) as the management, and dual port Intel Nic for the virtual machines.

Hyper-V Path Not Found while Enabling Replication

Hi,

I have configured a Hyper-V server running Windows 2012 DC edition. I have 3 VM in the server and 1 of the VM, I manage to configure replication without any issue. This VM sync successfully to the replica server.

However, when I try to add another VM to the same replica server, it shows this error:

Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'VM name'. The system cannot find the path specified. (0x80070003).

Any suggestion as to how to fix this? How come 1 VM works and the other not?

Thank you.

Online CSV expansion

We would like to expand our running CSV volume of two node cluster. Windows 2012 servers.

In our understanding we can expand the volume from the node which owns the CSV in failover cluster and that would increase the size in all nodes.

Can this be safely achieved while VMs are running on that CSV volume ?

Hyper V Guests "No Internet Access" then suddenly they have it after 5 to 10 mins

I have two Windows 2012 Hyper-V Clustered Machines. Migration between the two was flawless for some time and now I am seeing networking issues after a guest is migrated from one clustered host to another. It takes anywhere between 5 and 10 mins for the guest (Static IP) to finally resolve and connect to the network. I run IPCONFIG and it sees the static IP yet can not ping any other server on the network.

http://i.imgur.com/rjmKYNy.png

Like I said 5 to 10 mins later it is suddenly working.

Any ideas?
