VM's not rolling back

$

Guys,

Running a pooled collection of windows 7 machines running in server 2012.

When creating I enabled "roll back"

Below is what I have noticed , my question is why is the machine not going back to a saved state after logging off ?  In Hyper V manager I see the "restoring" state and the VM still has a snapshot attached.

Any ideas ?

1.  After creating the collection all of the VM's were in a running state (i thought they would be in saved) AND they have snapshots attached

2.  When I logoff vm's go to a "restoring" state but the snapshot never goes away and the machine does not go into a saved state

Stop VM, copy vhd, convert from dynamic to fixed, restore and run VM

Hi All

I am experiencing a dumb problem that I should have prevented. Allow me to first explain my setup

Host:

C: 50 GB

D: 700GB

VM

C: Dynamic disk (now 40GB)

The trouble that I have now is that my VM c drive is now full which in turn filled up my host c drive. I wanted to convert my vm to a fixed drive but I cannot because the c drive of my host is almost full and I need free space that is equivalent to my VM c drive for me to do the conversion. My question is that I have 400GB free on my host's D drive and was wondering whether it would be possible for me to convert my drive and set the output destination as my d drive or perhaps start with copying my vhd file to my d drive then do the conversion there and then delete the old one from the c drive and restore vm using the new fixed vhd.

I must mention that I am new to hyperV

Thanks

Just FYI, new Windows Server Gateway Hardware and Configuration Requirements topic live on the Web

Windows Server Gateway (WSG) is a virtual machine (VM)-based software router that allows Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) and Enterprises to enable datacenter and cloud network traffic routing between virtual and physical networks, including the Internet.

WSG is deployed on a dedicated computer that is running Hyper-V and that is configured with one VM. The VM is then configured as a WSG. For high availability of network resources, you can deploy WSG with failover by using two physical host servers running Hyper-V that are each also running a virtual machine (VM) that is configured as a gateway. The gateway VMs are then configured as a cluster to provide failover protection against network outages and hardware failure.

When you deploy WSG, the host servers running Hyper-V and the VMs that you configure as gateways must be running Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview.

If you’re planning on repurposing or purchasing new hardware to deploy WSG, you can use the new topic Windows Server Gateway Hardware and Configuration Requirements, at http://aka.ms/Kenzts to ensure that your hardware and configuration are optimized for your WSG deployment.

Good day!

I want to create a parent-child domain infrastructure on a hyper-v client on windows 8 pro. I was able to installed and set-up a domain controller (with DNS, ADDS, DHCP). But I'm not familiar on how I can turn a winserv2008r2 as child. I couldn't find my pre-created domain to connect to it.

Hyper-V 2012 Core host memory usage increases after reboot till all memory is used up

$

Dear Forum!

I newly installed hyper-V 2012 (Core) on a Supermicro Mainboard with an ADM Opteron 6344 32GB RAM

System information:

Manufacturer        : Supermicro
Model               : H8SGL
Name                : HYPERV
PrimaryOwnerName    : Windows User
TotalPhysicalMemory : 34341036032

After configuration of the host and two guests with fixed memory (host1: 4GB RAM, host2: 12GB RAM no dynamic memory used) I discovered that after 2 days there was no memory available on the host anymore. The Taskmgr process list shows maxx 2GB used memory, the performance tab shows completely used memory.

I installed all the available updates, rebooted and the memory usage gets back to normal. But after another 2 days the memory on the host was again completely used. There is no third party software installed that would eat up memory. I also tried to set the registry key for limiting host memory to 2048MB with no luck.

I always log out from the server not only disconnecting, because I read that there could be a problem with disconnected RDP sessions.

I tried turning off NUMA on the host, gave less memory to the guests but still the same behavior. When the memory is completely taken by the host I am not able to add a new virtual machine anymore, because the host complains about not enough memory left.

Is there anything I am missing?

Any suggestions on what I could try?

Question about using a fibre channel SAN with hyper-V

$

Hi all,

I am brand spanking new to Hyper-V, i have literally just looked through Introduction to Hyper-V Jump Start on Microsoft Virtual Academy.

I have a question around how to set up a fibre channel san. It has confused me that I can see inside Hyper-V that i can set up a virtual SAN. but is this not so VM's can talk directly to the SAN? I would like my VM library to be on the SAN LUN's

I am properly well confused about this and it is properly fairly simple. but i would have thought you configure the Hyper-V Host to be able to see the LUN's on the SAN and then when provisioning a new VM you can select to put your VHDX files on those LUNS.

Does anyone have screenshots?

Thanks in advance.

Hyper-V 2012 Linux server turning Read-only

$

Hi,

We have a strange problem of our RHEL servers turning Read-only  with the following errors:

===========================

sd 0:0:0:0: timing out command, waited 60s
Buffer I/O error on device sda2, logical block 36435
lost page write due to I/O error on sda2
Aborting journal on device sda2.
EXT3-fs error (device sda2) in ext3_reserve_inode_write: Journal has aborted
journal commit I/O error
EXT3-fs error (device sda2) in ext3_dirty_inode: Journal has aborted
ext3_abort called.
EXT3-fs error (device sda2): ext3_journal_start_sb: Detected aborted journal
Remounting filesystem read-only
journal commit I/O error

=======================

We have set the SCSI timeout to 180s as per the recommendation from Red Hat  and it's still timing out at 60s. Anyone know what this happens ?

Here are the Red hat recommended settings:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[root@bash]# mount
/dev/sdb2 on / type ext3 (rw,barrier=1)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
/dev/sda1 on /boot type ext3 (rw,barrier=1)
/dev/sdd on /apps type ext3 (rw,barrier=1)
/dev/sdc on /opt type ext3 (rw,barrier=1)

[root@bash]# grep 180 /etc/udev/rules.d/*

/etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules: RUN+="/bin/sh -c 'echo 180 > /sys$$DEVPATH/timeout'"

[root@bash# cat /sys/block/*/device/timeout
180
180
180
180

--------------------------------------------

We have applied the setting above but still it's timing out at 60s and Red Hat recommends to check with Microsoft. Is there any setting in Linux Integration tools on Hyper-V which override this settings ?

What are the best methods to troubleshoot the issues with SCSI on guest OS on Hyper-V level ?

Regards

Root :)

An attempt to initialize VM saved state failed

$

Hi,

Just put clean install of windows server R2 on machine. Installed the Hyper-V role. When I go to create a new virtual machine using the default locations the process works fine. When I change the default location to a different folder  (i.e. on drive D: instead of drive c:) then although the virtual machine is created, when I START the VM to install the OS I get the message 'An attempt to initialize VM saved state failed'. It appears to be failing to create a saved state. I thought this might be a permissions problem but as far as I can see the permissions are identical on the default folder and the new folder on d:. I have tried recreating a different folder on D: but each time I get the same message.

I have read posts about incompatible snapshots and removing saved state before upgrading to R2 but I am not upgrading. I just want to create a new VM on a different drive.

Would be grateful if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks

Are Diff disks limited by the original parent disk

$

Hi

I have been building some win2012 diff disks with PS for my dev environment hosted in win8 hyper -v.

Now wrongly or rightly , I created my win2012 parent disk with 1 cpu and 60GB thinking that it would hold the o/s and some common utilities.

Now my win2012 diff disk based VMs are configured with 4 CPUs and 80 GB.

However, wen I run a status command for the vm , I see 1 cpu in play  (see below)

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-VM sp2013dev01

Name State CPUUsage(%) MemoryAssigned(M) Uptime Status
---- ----- ----------- ----------------- ------ ------
sp2013Dev01 Running 1 843 16:03:50 Operating normally

Furthermore, If I look at the disk proprieties of drive C in my vm I

Now I am starting to get worried as I thought with dynamic storage etc it doesn't matter about the parent disk. Should I rebuild my parent and subsequent diff disks.

Problems Installing Windows 7 onto Hyper-V Server

After installing and setting up Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 on my testbox, I went about creating a VM to install Windows 7. I downloaded an ISO image for the Enterprise x86 and Home Premium x86 versions. I copied the ISO for the Enterprise version to a folder on the Hyper-V server and attached it to the VM optical drive. However after beginning the install process, I was confronted with this error:

"A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing.  If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now"

I couldn't browse anywhere on the VM to help out with this problem. I looked at the drive controllers setup on the VM and found nothing out of the ordinary. Thinking that something in the Enterprise install might have a problem with a VM, I detached that image and attached the image for the Home Premium ISO. Same problem occured.

Any thoughts?

I use VMware workstation 9 for my virtual machines, Ubuntu 13.04 mainly. To develop windows phone 8 apps I installed Windows phone SDK 8.0 but to test apps windows phone emulator needs hyper virtualization installed so I installed hyper virtualization. Now VMware is not working with hyper virtualization, and virtual machines on hyper virtualization are giving very poor presentation without GPU acceleration. remote FX says none of my GPUs support remote FX . Please help I want to switch from VMware to hyper v. My notebook is Asus K55vm-sx086d. Few weeks ago when I was just exploring hyper-v it was detecting my gpus for remote fx but i wasn't able to install remote fx adaptor in Linux.

Random VM's within Hyper-V 2012 Cluster losing connectivity.

$

Folks,

I have a 4 node Hyper-V 2012 Failover Cluster.

The networking is

1*1GB Nic for Management

4*1GB Team for VM Comms

3*1GB Team for iSCSI, Heartbeat, Backups etc

2* FC HBA for storage

The problem here is that random VMS are losing connectivity. The VM is up; the nic looks connected, however it does not see its default gateway.

The problem VM can ping any other VM on that Node.

If I do an "arp -a -v" on the VM it has an invalid arp entry of 00-00-00-00-00-00

If I move the VM to another node the nic kicks back to life.

Any ideas on what could be causing this.

Cheers

Is it possible to access a kickstart file for a CentOS 6.3 installation from a HyperV guest?

$

I am trying to install a CentOS guest on HyperV using a kickstart file hosted on a temporary webserver on my workstation, however I cannot get the CentOS installation process to connect to my workstation.

I've verified that this works if I use a local hyper-visor like VirtualBox on my workstation.

I've also run through the installation by hand and the problem seems to be the fact that no eth0 device is present in the CentOS after installation. I've searched the forums here on why that might be and also dug through some CentOS FAQ but haven't found any answer that would help me get around the no eth0 present at boot time problem.
