Windows Storage Server 2012 ISO

Windows Storage Server 2012 Standard also includes 2 licenses for VMs, but I cannot find an ISO to create a Storage Server VM... Could somebody help me on this?

I'm running on a Dell PowerVault NX3200, and if I use the provided Dell OS DVD, I get an error "This is not a Dell Powervault device", which is indeed correct since it is running virtual. So that's not working, and I only find an evaluation version on the Microsoft website which can not be 'upgraded' to a full version.

Then I also contacted Dell, but they say it is not possible to do this... But since Microsoft indicates you can run the 2 VMs just like on a Windows Server 2012 Standard, I believe it should be possible...

Any suggestions on how to get this installed?

Thanks!

PowerShell script available to create backups from Replicated VM's

Just in case you are looking for such a solution; I have created a powershell script that makes a backup from a replicated (Hyper-V 2012) VM. To do this correctly it pauses the replication while the copy is in progress. Additionally it adds a timestamp to the name of the backup, so that backups do not get overwritten.

It's a cheap & simple solution, but so far seems to do the trick, as long as you keep an eye on your storage ;-)

Script can be found here: http://www.servercare.nl/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=117

Hyper-V VM deletion with snapshots without having to merge snapshots first.

Hi all,

I have a quick one; I have a VM in the production environment that is currently not in use. It was one of our exchange servers that had HUGE snapshot files. I circumvented the issue by using Disk2VHD and recreated the machine. Only problem is; I now have this VM sitting there using up almost 2 TB of space including snapshots.

Now I know from experience that if I delete the machine from Hyper-V Manager, it will start the merging process. Which to me is unnecessary as I do not even need it. The other problem is; the LUN has about 20GB free (It is currently not in use) which is not even close to enough to merge those snapshots.

My question is: Is it safe to delete the files directly from the volume and then delete it from Hyper-V Manager? Keep in mind that I do not care if I corrupt the VM, as I want it gone without the lengthy process of merging.

I have tried to do it in a test environment and I got an error message back complaining that the VM was stuffed, and removed the VM. However this was a test environment.

I'd like to know the Technet experts thoughts on this one.

Hyper-V setup: 3 Node cluster, Server 2008 R2 Ent, Storage: HP MSA 2000 RAID 5.

Thanks in advance.

Hyper-V 3.0 and PVLAN question

I'm messing around with PVLAN and have a couple questions:

  • During my test I configured one VM as promiscious and another isolated. I got the isolated to talk to the promiscious
  • Does the PVLAN configuration not move with the virtual machine when the host is changed?

Reason I'm asking is because I had traffic talking from isolated to promiscious and visa vera... but after moving the VM with promiscious to another host it stopped talking. It is like it is lost the PVLAN configuration.

Surely these commands I ran will move with the VM right?

Timeout exception error for Hyper-V virtual machine

Hi,

I've created a windows store app that allows user to start and stop a VM in hyper-v.

When the start button is clicked, the following await methods are invoked:

//Start and connect to the VM
await objService.ConnectVMAsync(vmDet);

//Call method to create the snapshot
await objService.CreateVMSnapshotAsync(vmDet);

On the other hand, when the stop button is clicked, the following methods are invoked:

//Stop the VM
await objService.StopVMAsync(vmDet);

//Call method to apply the snapshot
await objService.ApplyVMSnapshotAsync(vmDet);

//Call method to remove the snapshot
await objService.RemoveVMSnapshotAsync(vmDet);

Here's a scenario:

If a user starts a VM, the VM will start and snapshot is created. When the user stops it, the VM is turned off, the snapshot created earlier is being applied to it and then it is removed. However, subsequently when user starts the same VM again, it hangs and takes quite some time to start up. This causes a timeout exception error to occur.

Thus, are there ways to overcome this error?

Thanks.

Windows Server Backup & Hyper-V Host Component

Because I was having inconsistent backups use the Child Partition Snapshots, I have each of my VM's doing their own backup. So I an preparing a custom backup schedule for the actual server, excluding the VM's. Should I back up the VM Host Component?

windows hyper v 2012 r2

I installed this for class needing a Virtual machine since version of windows 8 (upgrade not pro) thinking it would install the hyper -v that windows 8 kept boasting about. It is a separate install from my windows 8 (on a separate hard drive) . it is dual boot configuration. How do I uninstall this (since its not a VM software that I have time to configure and use) and can I get hyper-v for windows 8 without having to install a the server?

Virtual machine import fails

Hi everybody,

I have problems re-importing VMs on my Hyper-V server.

I had to rebuild the raid container on the volume where the original hyper-v VMs were saved. So I exported them to an external harddisk, rebuild the raid container (all data on it was deleted) and tried to re-import them again. Before reimporting them, I removed the list of VMs from the Hypervisor Manager because all machines were marked as offline.

The import of the machines will fail with the following error message:

"The operation failed because a machine with the same identifier already exists. Select a new identifier and try the operation again"

What can I do here?

Thanks

Hyper-V causing "stuttering" on Windows 8 Pro

When I'm running a Hyper-V VM (which I run most of the time) that is set to use 8GB of RAM, occasionally my mouse will experience "stuttering" or lag.  It can happen multiple times in a row, and sometimes is spaced out over hours.

Machine specifications:

Windows 8 Pro

i7-2500

16GB RAM

nVidia GeForce 470GTX

Hyper-V VM is on a secondary SATA drive that is only used for Hyper-V

Hyper-V VM is using 8GB fixed (another one is using 8GB min, 12GB max -- not running at the same time of course) with 2 vCPUs and two VHDX's, fixed.

Move virtual machine storage corrupting disks

$

Hi,

I have now had 2 VMs corrupted when using Move Virtual Machine Storage.

After the move has completed the server fails with a BSOD and on reboot gives the error 'A disk read error occurred. Press ctrl alt delete to restart'

This event is logged on the HyperV host:

Log Name:      System
Source:        Virtual Disk Service
Date:          1/08/2013 7:45:13 AM
Event ID:      9
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      HPV10

Description:
Unexpected provider failure. Restarting the service may fix the problem. Error code:80004005@02000014

I have not been able to recover the disk - I made a thread about this after the 1st corruption -

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/701159e2-b548-4951-a28e-713a903e450d/a-disk-read-error-occurred-after-moving-vm-storage

Since then I have rebooted the cluster (+ windows updates) and taken SAN snapshots before attempting to move another VM.

I am now very nervous about using this feature again. What can I do to identify the cause of these issues?

Move Virtual Machine Storage on a Clustered vm = Disk Read Error?

$

Having an issue when moving Virtual Machine Storage on a Clustered vm is breaking (corrupting?) the vhdx.

Setup:

2-node Hyper-V Server 2012 (the free one) Cluster connected to an EqualLogic PS6100E using a CSV.  (2) Teamed (Hyper-V) LAN nics and (3) iSCSI MPIO nics each.

Starting Location:

  • VM named "vv-2012" is built from an ISO and running on a server in the node - NOT added to Failover Cluster Manager as a role yet.
  • Disk lives at "C:\ClusterStorage\volume1\vv-2012\Virtual Hard Disks\vv-2012.vhdx"
  • VM lives at ""C:\ClusterStorage\volume1\vv-2012\Virtual Machines\xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx.xml"
  • Machine is Running at Login Screen directly after setting the local Administrator password
  • Running current Integration Services

Test 1 - From Starting Location - Move VM Storage using Hyper-V Manager - Move just the vhdx one folder up ("C:\ClusterStorage\volume1\vv-2012\vv-2012.vhdx")

  • SUCCESS - vhdx moved and machine still running

Test 2 - From Starting Location - Import into Failover Cluster Manager - Move VM Storage using Failover Cluster Manager - Move just the vhdx one folder up ("C:\ClusterStorage\volume1\vv-2012\vv-2012.vhdx")

  • FAILED - Disk Read error in the running VM as soon as the move starts (see below image)

Test 3 - From Starting Location - Import into Failover Cluster Manager -SHUT DOWN RUNNING VM - Move VM Storage using Failover Cluster Manager - Move just the vhdx one folder up ("C:\ClusterStorage\volume1\vv-2012\vv-2012.vhdx")

  • SUCCESS - Started VM - no errors

Working on the, now, broken vhdx:

- Searching technet (and the Internet - Google/Bing) returns almost exclusively P2V conversions using disk2vhd.exe from Sysinternals.  That is NOT the case here - reading these posts talks about partitions not being imported (boot partition) or incorrect IDE/SCSI settings on imported vhd's.

- Attaching the vhdx to another vm (or my local machine using Disk Management) and running chkdsk returns "Corrupt master file table. Windows will attempt to recover master file table from disk."  "Windows cannot recover master file table.  CHKDSK aborted." (also tried with /F even though screenshot does not show that - same result) - I see the 2 partitions (boot and system) but cannot browse them - marked as RAW

- Running TestDisk returns invalid MFT (I think, not an expert on this program).

Summary:

- Moving vm vhdx's that are turned off either through Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Managerwork fine

- Moving vm vhdx's that are running through Hyper-V Managerwork fine

- Moving vm vhdx's that are running through Failover Cluster Managerbreaks (corrupts?) the vhdx.

So my questions are 3 fold:

  1. Can anyone else reproduce this?
  2. Is it a Hyper-V / Cluster bug?
  3. Can I recover the vhdx?

Wasn't sure if I should post here or Cluster forum?  Both?

VM windows 2008 Cluster on Hyperv 2012 Server FC Disk error after Live Migration of the active VM Cluster Node

Deployed a 2 nodes Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Failover Cluster on a HyperV 2012 Server cluster deployed on IBM HS23 blade.

Disk susbsystem is IBM Storwize V7000. MPIO driver installed plus IBM DDSM.

Lun presented to the VM are connected with Virtual FC Adapter and everything works fine in the cluster until we start a live migration of the VM which hold the cluster disks online.

After migration complete positively, at the moment the MPIO of the migrated VM goes crazy with a lot of errors (source: mpio eventID 16 ) and warnings (source: mpio EventID: 17) in the system event log. After that the disks becomes unavailable.

Consequently everything hangs until power off the migrated vm, so the services on the cluster switchs on the second node.

I try to set the registry key HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Disk\TimeOutValue to 190 as i found on various articles but nothing seems to change....

Any idea?

Hyper V2008 R2 CPU Allocation

HI,

I have a server with specs. DL360 G5, 2x Quad core processor and installed hyper v 2008 r2 on server.

When i create a vm. i can see only 4 logical processor for assignment to vm.

But i have 2 quad core cpu. its mean i have 2*4= 8 cpu cores in my server.

I know the limitation of the Hyper V it support only 4 logical processor,

My question is about 2nd processor of my server. Will 2nd cpu useless for me.? because hyper v 2008r2 support only 4 logical processor for vm.

Plz clarify me. im confusing .

Thanks

Hyper-V vs VMWare on a real life example

$

We are a Windows shop and for virtualization we have been going the VMWare route for a while. With Hyper-V 2012 entering the market, I wanted to get a better idea of fault tolerance options and pricing for Hyper-V. All the articles I have read indicate significant savings on the Hyper-V licensing. I enclose a picture of the VMWare VSA cluster we opted for recently and would like some information on the Hyper-V equivalent. Apart from potential licensing savings are there any potential hardware savings in regards to how Hyper-V operates vs VMWare?

The price for the vmware licensing related items:
VMware vSphere Standard Acceleration Kit for 6 processors +
Production Support for 1 Year 24x7
$6885
VMWARE Backup 1 $488

Please feel free to refer me to another resource or if you believe they can more properly address the question.

Problem renaming a vm's data root folder in Hyper-V 3.0

$

I keep my virtual hard disk .vhdx files and Virtual Machines folders together in a single folder for each vm.  This folder is not the Hyper-V default.  I want to organize folders and files better using a naming convention.

I can change the name of the .vhdx and then change the hard drive setting in Hyper-V and have the vm start up OK.  But when I change the name of the folder containing it and the Virtual Machines folder the vm no longer starts up.  (if I understand correctly, the folder that I am trying to rename is called the data root.)  I tried modifying the configuration xml file manually but to no avail.

At first I was getting a Critical-Off status in the Hyper-V Manager so I undid the rename.  Now the Hyper-V starts the vm but fails with the message that the .vhdx file is in use. I have confirmed that no other vm is configured to use it.

What does it take to rename a data root folder?  I could live with importing and exporting, which I am attempting now, but I would like to know it there is a simple way to rename the data root and have Hyper-V accept it.

Enable VM Direct Disk in Hyper-V 2012

I used to attach physical disk to vm's in Hyper-V 2008. In Hyper-V 2012, it's gone.

Disk have been offline in Hyper-V. (diskpart, select disk X, offline disk), but none appear on the console physical disk that can be attach to a VM.

Can anybody help?

Can't initialize 3 TB external usb hard drive in server 2008

I have been trying to get W2008 SBS to recognize a 3 TB external usb drive (WD Element) and it has failed to do so after several tries.

Is there something aside from the standard procedures (in disk management) I should be doing.

And for you Microsoft fans out there, this should be just a simple PnP not this convoluted process I've been going through.

2008 R2 VM cannot browse the web

I have a 2012 server with a 2008 R2 VM running on it.  I staged this at home and all was fine.  I then changed the IP's to static and moved it to the client site.  Once there for some reason I can no longer browse the web from within the VM. I gat back "cannot display page" errors.

Tracert to a site goes all the way through

Cannot get to a site by IP or name.

The host can still browse the web fine.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Concurrent Remote Desktop, Exchange in a VM, using Windows 8.1 + Hyper-V

$

Hello all,

I am attempting to configure a specific setup, and was wishing to get some initial inputs on any potential barriers in my intended setup before I make any large changes.

Current Setup:

One Windows 8.1 desktop, used by myself for work + personal hybrid use, and another user for personal use (AMD FX-8350, 16 GB Ram).

Changes:

I am looking to setup Hyper-V with a VM for Windows Server 2012 Standard, containing Exchange Server 2013 Standard, for learning purposes (work-related intent) and for light use (personal-related intent). I have considered making this the host OS, but then there would be issues in maintaining the benefits of the above current setup for personal use.

Questions:

  • Will there be any issues in remotely connecting to this VM to utilize the Exchange Server?
  • If User2 is logged in physically, will that block RDP into the VM? I have read that you cannot have concurrent logins on Windows 8.1, does this still apply if you have a VM running under User1's account which may accept RDP?
  • Any other concerns with my desired setup?

Thank you for your time and expertise,

Jason
