Forum FAQ: You cannot allocate page file to Microsoft SCSI Virtual Disk and boot from a Microsoft SCSI Virtual Disk in a guest.

$

Symptom

A Hyper-V guest could not boot from Microsoft SCSI Virtual Disk; in addition, you cannot allocate page file to a Microsoft SCSI Virtual disk.

Cause

The SCSI controller is synthetic only and it would not be loaded yet when trying to create page file. It’s the same reason you can’t boot from SCSI.

Answer

In a Hyper-V guest, you can have 3 IDE disk plus the CD/DVD. Instead of SCSI virtual disk, you can use IDE virtual disk. You don’t lose any performance. IDE is just as fast as SCSI.

Connection to DC lost and enabling GUI impossible

$

I transferred my AD lab from VMware ESXi 5.1 to Hyper-V 2012 Core. I have only 1 server to act as Hyper-V host, but during the migration I wanted to join the host to my domain, so temporary I had another Hyper-V client on W8 machine, started the DC.

Everything else worked fine, I even managed to create several networks via virtual switches, and I also enabled RRAS on a Hyper-V host. Then I created last network for nodes in different pool, and after next time, when I powered up my Hyper-V host, connection the DC was lost.

I have 3 different units, lets call them:
A = Hyper-V host with RRAS, and several NICs
B = W8 client with Hyper-V client
C= DC sitting on a client Hyper-V

A can access B, but not C
D can access both
C can access B, but not C

I copied DC to Hyper-V host, thought I could start it from there, reconfigure network and access to DC there. Nope - DC will start, but console connection via Hyper-V is not possible, because of some layer of security.

Last option - I´m trying to enable GUI on Hyper-V host. Tried to used powershell, dism, server manager dashboard from B to A. Everytime the result is the same - cannot download source files, even if I specify source as DVD media or install.wim

High Memory Utilization on Windows Guest on Hyper-V 2012 Server

Hi All,

We have installed Hyper-V 2012 Datacenter Server having 64 GB ram on physical Server, we have created three Virtual machines of Windows Enterprise 2008 R2 SP1 with 16 GB or ram each,we have configured dynamic memory but all three VM's are utilization memory above 95 % constant, for the same we have installed latest integration services but still utillization is high.

And check the process also no process found that can be suspected for high mem utilization.

So need help how to configure dymanic memory and how to set buffer setting options for 16 GB of ram.

Hello everyone,  I suspect that the answer is yes but would like confirmation on the following:

3 (Server 2012) Hyper-V Hosts in a cluster:

Node1

Node2

Node3

Node3 has alot of Local storage space.  Is it possible to replicate a couple of clustered VMs to Node3's local storage?  Also, is it possible to replicate a VM to multiple nodes?

Thanks in advance,

Hey!

I have two Hyper V Windows 2012 Hosts, on the first host a running 3 virtual machines.
for all the 3 guests hyperV replica is activated to the second machine.

I try to do a planned failover, which didn't work (it stopped in the last step with the following message:)

'xxxxxxx' could not initialize. (Virtual machine ID D0DE6F58-101F-4F45-94A8-1AF19E4A7F1B)

'xxxxxxx' could not create or access saved state file D:\HyperV\Hyper-V Replica\Virtual Machines\D0DE6F58-101F-4F45-94A8-1AF19E4A7F1B\D0DE6F58-101F-4F45-94A8-1AF19E4A7F1B.vsv. (Virtual machine ID D0DE6F58-101F-4F45-94A8-1AF19E4A7F1B)

The same message appears when i try start it manually on the second server

Why is hyper-v better than virtualbox?

We have 4-5 people in a software development environment with access to 4 servers, each with 2 quad-core or dual-core cpu's (core-based, before nehalem), and 8gb or 16gb RAM, so I think we have a good amount of power for virtualization. Total, we have a team foundation server, oracle server, web server, 2 virtualization servers, and multiple workstations, some virtualized, some not.

When we started virtualizing about a year ago, for whatever reason, and although everyone has an MSDN sub, we started using VirtualBox instead of Hyper-V. I'm no expert (and that's why I'm here) but I think they operate at different levels of interaction with the hardware, and that VirtualBox is a bad idea for this environment.

Can someone give some good reasons why we should be using Hyper-V? Also is it possible to convert the virtual machines?

And then I would like to know if it's okay to also be virtualizing our web server and oracle server, etc. We have only been virtualizing workstations. I think we really need to make good use of virtualization if we are going to be doing it at all.

Advice welcome also for virtualization best practices, backups, management, infrastructure design, etc. I would like to start with a domain controller, and maybe a Lync server so we can share desktops, etc. Thanks for all input!

Hi,

i am looking for an app to control and manage our hyper-v servers from the mobile phone.

Did someone try this ServerManager free app for hyper-v? (https://itunes.apple.com/de/app/servermanager/id612970583?mt=8) I also found something from solar and rover but they are very expensive.

Are there other applications avaliable?

HyperV %Guest Run Time Counter in Milliseconds?

$

In the HyperV Hypervisor Virtual Processor Counters there is the %Guest Run Time Counter that gives me a percentage value. Is there any way to get a value in milliseconds? I think i could convert it with the knowledge of the time frame for the measurement. My calculation would be: TimeFrame * %GuestRunTime / 100.

Does anyone know how long the timeframe for the measurement is?

Hyper V virtual machines unable to capture mouse pointer

Hi All ,

I came across weird issue last week. I have two 2008 R2 Hyper V hosts. Each of the hosts have around 15 virtual machines running. One fine day , i found that virtual machines have stopped capture mouse pointer.

everything was running fine day before. I used to access the virtual machines from Hyper V manager. There was no changes nor any reboots. Suddenly virtual machines stopped capturing mouse pointer. Keyboard capture worked.

Say out of 15 virtual machines atleast 10 faced the similar issue. Most of the VM were 2008 R2 and few were 2003. It should be issue of Integration Services component as everything was working fine before.

Only way out for me was reset the virtual machines , which got there issue resolved. Luckily they were DR servers , so i could afford reboot. I also tried to RDP into those virtual servers , still no go.

I did check out the event viewer , especially the Hyper V logs , but couldnt find anything.

Hyper V Create VM with custom settings using WMI attach VHD

$

Does anyone have a complete example of how to create a VM that has custom settings and VHD's attached using WMI from PowerShell? (need to use WMI and not the library from codeplex)  I have found a lot of partial scripts that create default vm's without vhd's attached and a lot of broken links pointing to solutions.  Have also seen reference that it can be done with AddVirtualSystemResources but have not seen any examples.  Here is what I have so far, and thanks in advance!

Create VM with no VHD's, and create VHD but don't know how to connect the VHD or create it during the VM creation steps:

#get the current computer name
$currentname=get-wmiobject Win32_ComputerSystem

$namespace=$currentname.name

#create a VHD
$disk = Get-WmiObject Msvm_ImageManagementService -namespace "root\virtualization" -computername $namespace

$disk.CreateDynamicVirtualHardDisk("$env:systemdrive\nameofvhd.vhd", 20000000000)|out-null
$newvm="Test"
$description="This is the Description"
$path="$env:systemdrive\testvmfolder"

# Create a VM

# Get a new instance of Msvm_VirtualSystemGlobalSettingData

$vsgsdClass = [wmiclass]"root\virtualization:Msvm_VirtualSystemGlobalSettingData"
$vsgsd = $vsgsdClass.CreateInstance()
$vsgsd.ElementName = $newvm
$vsgsd.Description = $description
$vsgsd.ExternalDataRoot = $path

# Get the managment service and define the system from the embedded instance
$vmms = gwmi -namespace root\virtualization Msvm_VirtualSystemManagementService

$result = $vmms.DefineVirtualSystem($vsgsd.GetText(1))

if($result.ReturnValue -eq 4096){
    # A Job was started, and can be tracked using its Msvm_Job instance
    $job = [wmi]$result.Job
    # Wait for job to finish
    while($job.jobstate -lt 7){$job.get()}
    # Return the Job's error code
    return $job.ErrorCode
}
# Otherwise, the method completed
return $result.ReturnValue

Self-Service Users Can't Create Templates

$

We have created a self-service user and given necessary "Author" permissions to the group. Everything works great for the user other than creating Templates. When they go through the wizard they get an error at the end...

Connected role SELF-SERVICE_GROUP doesn't have access to .
Contact Administrator to get access to the desired path or use the R /W path to which the role has access to.
ID: 24372

This works with no problems as a VMM Admin, error only occurs for the self-service users. I noticed the wizard has less options as the Self-Service User as well the user is never prompted to choose a location.  Clicking OK to the error closes the Wizard and no template is created. It is odd that there is no path in the error message that occurs, just a blank space. I have used ProcMon to see what files are being denied access to on the VMM server but I can't find any.

This environment is running on all Windows 2012 servers with VMM 2012 and SP1.

Thanks in advance.

Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 Error 0x80070422 starting VM's

$

I've been working at a customer site most of the day where they have a 2-node Hyper-V Server 2008R2 cluster that hasn't been maintained since it was built a few years back.  I patched and put the latest HP BIOS & drivers in place on one node, and the result has been that whenever you try to start a VM on that node, it fails with an error 0x80070422 relating to the emulated IDE controller.  I've looked all over the logs and can't find anything to indicate what might be going on.  This happens even if you create a VM that isn't clustered, and is on local disk so it appear to be something quite fundamentally wrong.  I'm planning to just rebuild the host tomorrow, but if anyone has any bright ideas while I'm asleep they would be greatly appreciated...

Error opening settings in hyper-v 2012 clustered VMs

$

Hello,

We have a 2 nodes hyper-v cluster, with 2 VMs in each node. It was working fine, but suddenly we can't open the settings of none of the VMs in none of nodes. The error that appears if you click on "connect" is:

"An error occurred trying to find the virtual machine 'xxxx' on the computer 'xxx'. The computer 'localhost' failed to perform the requested operation because it is out of memory or disk space."

And the error that appears if you click click on VMs's "settings" is:

"Devices cannot be displayed for this virtual machine. Hyper-V encountered an error trying to access an object on computer 'localhost' because the object was not found. The object might have been deleted, or you might not have permission to perform the task. Verify that the Virtual Machine Management service on the computer is running. If the service is running, try to perform the task again by using Run as Administrator."

We are trying to open it with the "Administrator" account, and we have already restarted both servers. The VMs are Exchange 2010 servers and they are working fine, and we can connect them through Terminal Services.

Thanks in advance.

I am not sure how to get rid the of the SPN error in hyper-v events.  It appears whenever I reboot this server -windows 2008 R2 enterprise.  I have tried restarting VMMS service as well as confirming that permission of "self" user  has write permissions for SPN for this server object in AD.     Please suggest a solution because currently I just build two new VM on this box and would not like to remove this server from the domain and readd it.

Hyper-V 3.0 Snapshot Merge use too much disk IO / Missing QoS

$

Hello,

Today i was confronted to a serious incident, after starting a snapshot merge.

Context : Windows Server 2012, local storage (12+ disk Raid 10), WinServ2012 VM, heavy snapshot to merge (700Go avhdx)

The VM was stopped when i deleted the snapshot.

Problem : after a few minutes, snapshot merging was taking ALL available disk IO (500+ Mo/s to the VM vhdx and avhdx), slowing the whole server to death, and making all running vm unreachable. Took me 30 minutes just to be able to restart vmms.exe, and to finally cancel the snapshot merge. Now it seems the merge process has started again, but with the usual and reasonable disk usage (around 50Mo/s).

Any idea :

- Why it happened ?

- How to stop it fast if it happens again ? (is there a powershell command to stop/pause a snapshot merge ? The UI was not responding)

- How to prevent it ?

Thanks a lot.

Failoverclusteringproblems on one Hyper-V-Server with Hyper-V Clients

$

Hi,

I hope this is the right Forum to post my problem, because it is a little bit mixed up with hyperv and windows failoverclustering.

My problem is the following:
I have three physical server, that host some hyper-v clients. Lets call them srv01, srv02 and srv03. All three are running Windows Server 2012 Datacenter with all updates and actual drivers. All Servers are Dell PowerEdge R710. srv02 and srv03 are absolute identical except that srv02 has 288GB RAM and srv03 has 144GB RAM. srv01 has a different processor and motherboard. RAM is 288GB too.

I installed a Windows Server 2012 Datacenter on srv01 and srv02 as a hyper-v client. Lets call them hv01 and hv02. I installed all available updates via Windows Update. After this, I tried to create a Failovercluster with using the windows-feature. While creating the cluster from hv01 with hv01 and hv02 as a node, the creationprocess failed with a timeout to hv02. When I try to create the cluster from hv02, the process timed out to hv01. When I created the cluster with just one node, the creationprocess finished successful. Then I tried to add the second node to the existing one-node-cluster, but it failed again with a timeout.

After two days of searching analysing etc. I moved hv02 to srv01. So hv01 and hv02 are running on srv01. After doing this, the clustercreation with both nodes was successful. Now I moved hv02 back to srv02. That results in a not available clusternode - so hv02 was not available in the failovercluster.

Then I moved hv02 to srv03. And voila: the cluster was up. I tested some configurations and figured the following out:
hv01 and hv02 on srv01 - works
hv01 on srv01 and hv02 on srv02 - fails
hv01 on srv01 and hv02 on srv03 - works
hv01 on srv02 and hv02 on srv03 - fails

After this, I was a little bit confused, because I thought it might be the different hardware, but that doesn't make sense, because srv02 and srv03 are identical and srv02 is not workling.

So: Anyone has an idea what the problem can be?
