Could Not Start Imported VM: Hyper-V 2012

$

I did an in-place upgrade of Windows Server 2012 on my laptop and enabled the Hyper-V role after the upgrade. The VMs could not be seen so I imported them into the Hyper-V server. I could not start the VM and am getting the following error message

"...failed to start worker process:Incorrect function (0x80070001)"

Even when creating a new VM and using the VHDs of my existing VMs, they still would not start. I have already granted Full Control permission to authenticated users on the folder where the VHD is stored to test if the issue is related to ACLs but could not get it to work. Any pointers on where to look will be greatly appreciated.

Minimum Free Space Requirement on Physical Hard Drive (Used as Storage of Virtual Hard Drives)

I have a second local, physical hard drive on a Hyper-V Server 2012 deployment.  This 500gb drive (and its RAID1 counterpart) have the sole purpose to store VHD(x) containers.  What is the minimum amount of free space required for normal operation of the Hypervisor, defragmenting, swap, etc?

  • ~100%?
  • 99%
  • 75%
  • Other?

Only references I can find on the subject:

New Domain Controller can resolve internet names but cannot browse/ping

Hello
I just set up a new DC on MS Hyper-V. I am on a home network. The IP is hard coded at 192.168.1.10. There is no gateway and the dns is set to 127.0.0.1. In DNS I have a forwarder set to my linksys router 192.168.1.1.

When trying to ping internet addresses (e.g. google.com) I get "Pinging google.com [173.194.43.34] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1.10: Destination host unreachable." So it appears I can resolve the names but that's it. I tried adding another forwarder for comcast's dns 75.75.75.75 and also tried manually adding that in DNS with no luck. Other machines in the domain can access Internet if I put the dns and default gateway as 192.168.1.1.

I am wondering if there is something I have to adjust in the virtual network manager but I feel kind of stuck.

Thanks,
Mike

Can I place a VM on a GPT disk?

I want to place a virtual server on a GPT disk. The Hyper-V host server is running Windows 2008R2 SP1.

The server is attached to a SAN Storage. I've created a 3TB volume on the SAN and mapped it to the host server.

What I want to do is define this 3TB disk as a GPT disk and use it to store a virtual server. I plan to create two VHDs but both will be placed on the same physical volume.

I plan to limit the size of the first VHD  to 100GB , this is where the Virtual server will boot from. It will be attached as IDE to the virtual server. Then I plan to add another VHD which I will limit to 2.9TB and attach to the Virtual Server as SCSI.

Will this work? I mean will the VM have any problem booting from the 100GB VHD just because it is defined as GPT on the host?

HA with 2 servers - Hyper-V or vSphere

Hello,

I have two physical servers and 1 shared storage (iSCSI with a Synology SAN) and I want to make HA with it at a small business. I tried to use Hyper-V, but it seems i need to join the Hyper-V machines to domain. But I don't have other servers, the DC will be a VM inside it. (i need to make the domain more fail proof)

Even if we buy another server to have the DC outside VM, I will have the same problems, the domain won't be fail proof, I don't want to have non-VM systems.

Joining the physical machine to a domain inside seems to be a bad idea. Are there any other options?

With vSphere I don' have such problems, two physical computers + 1 shared storage is working, but vSphere is free...

I didn't try the new shared nothing feature, but I think it needs SMB v3 which is only available with Windows Server 2012 so it won't work with a SAN.

Thanks

I just built a brand new Hyper-V lab from desktop class hardware and am experiencing STOP errors whenever I attempt to build a new VM.  The host is fine and is not experiencing any STOP errors or driver issues; however, I am getting some intermittant drive failures in the RAID array which I am resolving independently. In this configuration I have 4 drives in a RAID 5 array and a single dedicated drive for backups and snaphots. Until today, I was only successful building VM's hosted on the dedicated drive which led me to believe it was indicative of the RAID issues; however as of this morning I'm now getting the same error when building VM's on the dedidated drive. I will post the specifications at the end of the email - here is the error and sequence of activities:

  1. Create new VM
  2. Configure to boot from ISO (also on dedicated drive, also tried capturing DVD with same results)
  3. Start the VM, files begin loading, I think it gets just prior to the GUI portion of the Server 2008 R2 x64 installation
  4. STOP error

Virual Machine Management service is shutting down

Windows Server 2012 - Every day around 12:30 AM the VMMS service shuts down and I get event 14090 "Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service is shutting down while some virtual machines are running. All running virtual machines will remain running with no management access."

It is being shutdown by the Service Control Manager I can see it in the System event log. Although it does not get started back up.

Installing Server 2008 R2 on Hyper-V v1: drivers not found

I am trying to test Server 2008 R2 on an existing Server 2008 R1 64-bit box with Hyper-V v1.  However, when I begin the installation from my ISO I get the following message:

"A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing.  If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.

Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove is for this step."

This is AFTER the installer has booted and asked for localization information.  I have KB950050 installed on the host.

I am also seeing this in the event log:
"Device 'VMBus' in 'ACS-01-VSRV07' cannot load because it is incompatible with virtualization stack.  Server version 13 Client version 65537 (Virtual machine 54933EF0-4FF2-4C37-B777-031DE4DD4C8A)."  I read somewhere that that may be caused by the network adapter.  I have already removed it from this VM.  I have already installed Server 2008 R1 in a VM on this server.  Is there a set of drivers somewhere that I am missing?

Install Windows VM from a bootable USB image

I have a bootable Windows 8 USB drive that I am trying to use to install a new VM in Hyper-V. Is this possible? If so how do I accomplish this? The problem I am facing is that even though I added the USB drive as another hard drive to the new VM (after taking it offline in Disk Management) and setting HDD as the first boot option, I was able to go through the initial setup screens, but on restarting the VM to actually perform the OS install, Hyper-V popped an error that it was unable to find an OS.

Windows Auto Logon with Connection Broker possible?

$

Hello,

please consider this scenario: Clients may connect to a pool of identically configured WIndows 7 desktops per Connection Broker. They would all use the same Windows User to automatically logon to the Win7 desktops.

Is this scenario possible with a connection broker? (Microsoft RD Connection Broker?)

Is it possible to guarantee that no client may accidentally reuse/overtake disconnected session from other device/IP?

Is it possible to prevent disconnect of sessions with Windows 7 at all?

thanks in advance

Markus

Hyper-V Licensing

If you are using your maximum ‘free allowance’ of Windows Server VMs on a host (1 in this case), you must use the host machine to purely manage the virtual machines running on it, and nothing else."

This blog entry seems to imply that no other roles may be installed on the host machine.. Where in any of the Microsoft licensing documentation is this stated!

This statement tends to imply that AD/DNS/DHCP/Terminal Services cannot be installed on the host o/s and thusly the host o/s can't logon since the VM will be hosting those roles and you are left in a catch-22 situation.. host machine cannot logon as it cannot find a domain controller which won't start until the virtual machine that has these roles has started..

"Windows Server 2008 Standard Editionprovides a single license to run a single instance of the software.  My understanding of these terms is that this permits you to run a single virtual OSE on top of the Standard Edition server without requiring additional licenses.  This arrangement also means that you are only permitted to use the physical server itself to run the Hyper-V virtualization software and to manage the OSEs on the server.

Standard Edition is the most cost-effective if you want to run up to three simultaneous instances in a virtual OSE on the server.

Should read Enterprise VS Standard

could not create an hyper-v switch from a network team

Hello I tried to create a hyper-v switch.

It's created ok however I am receiving this error in event log: Port '7F5C72A4-63A6-457A-91FB-3F0262A1830F' was prevented from using MAC address '00-1B-21-CC-6B-CA' because it is pinned to port 'B383FB69-AF3F-4904-A8A8-066FAC4D1261'.

Yes, it was created from a team of 4 nics, intel ET2 adapters. I am guessing one of the adapters are using that mac?

Any ideas what do do next? this is an hyper-v server 2008 r2

Can Not Find An Accelerated OpenGL Mode

I have a Hyper-V VM running Windows 8 that I use to test games on, but when I open the game I get an error saying that it can't find an accelerated OpenGL mode. I tried using the RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter feature, and even upgrading from Windows Server 2008 to 2012. I tried running it outside the VM on the server and it worked but it will not work in the VM. Is there a way to fix this?

hyper-v installation problem

I am running windows 2008 standard R2 on an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T 3.20 GHz.  Trying to install feature Hyper-V.  The feature installs, but backs out after rebooting.  I am guessing the processor is causing the problem, but had the AMD utility check for supported Visual feature and all looks good.  No other problems with the installation.  Ready to go production ASAP.

Any help would be appreciated.

VHD and VHDX won't Compact

I also have the same problem.

If I compact a VHD or VHDX the compact runs for one second and ends, and the VM's remain uncompacted.

I am using REFS format on the drive, and the VM's are Windows 7 x86, if that makes any difference.

I have disabled System Restore in VM's, as that was a known problem with 2008 R2.

Can this be reported as a bug in Server 2012 RC.

installed Hyper V Server in error, Meant to instal Hyper-V Manager

It was late night friday i read it wrong it is all my fault.

I thought I had downloaded Hyper-V Manager but downloaded and installed Hyper V Server by error.

It was an .ISO so it did not complete the install when it rebooted.

I have now been able to get this same system back up and running on w7x64, but it does have missing files and does have some Hyper V Server files installed.

I am not sure my best course of action at this time, but it is looking like a  clean install might be my only option at this point.

System restored  (no good)

Boot to disk to repair, [(only  give you boot manager screen ) both choices are Hyper V server systems).

1 actually boots to my w7x64 OS, the other does not boot up.

This w7x64 OS: if I go to control panel\administrative tools\ | I only have four tools that appear, everything else is gone.

Hyper-V and iSCSI to tape backup

Hi,

I have a SCSI tape drive connected to a Windows 2008 R2. On this server I have installed another Windows 2008 R2 from which I want to run my backups.

I want to use iSCSI to connect the VM server to the host so that it can see the tape backup. I have not been able to configure iSCSI target so that it exposes the tape drive, or I am too dumb. (firewalls are off on both servers just to make sure I eliminated this possibility).

Has anyone done this before? If so, how? Detailed instructions if you can.

TIA

Paul
