Office 365 Rich Co-existence environment with Hyper-V and NLB - renewing a wilcard cert
I appreciate any help in advance!
We began a transition from on premise Exchange 2007 to Office 365 (Education) late this past Spring. We have a rich co-existence environment at present, with DirSync, Ex2010 hybrid server, and TMG all running on a two node Hyper-V cluster with NLB attached to an Equalogic iSCSI SAN. We have a wildcard certificate issued through Digicert that is coming up for renewal in a couple of weeks. Dell Services handled most of the install dirty work and experienced some issues with getting the certs to work initially. However, Microsoft support was able to help them get it functional.
Now that I'm on my own, I need to renew these certs and am looking for some assistance with this. I can generate a new cert with certreq; I just don't want to break anything when it comes time to import the new certs. Any gotchas or issues I need to be aware of ahead of time before I take the plunge and attempt this next week?
Thanks,
Ben W
Hyper-V 3.0 standalone management through WinRM possible?
Hi!
is it possible to manage the new Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V edition (standalone in Workgroup mode) trough WinRM from Windows 8 solely?
Will it be possible with Powershell cmdlets?
If I want to manage it through a GUI, does the Hyper-V Management Snapin of the MMC requires DCOM?
Thanks

Access Device Manager in Hyper-V 2012
When I try accessing Hyper-V Server 2012's Device Manager via MMC I get "Make Sure that this computer is on the network, has remote administration enabled, and is running the "Plug and Play" and "Remote registry" services.
The Error Was: "The machine selected for remote communication is not available at this time.
I disabled the Hyper-V Firewall and followed the steps outlined here for "Allow remote access to the Plug and Play interface":
http://mikefrobbins.com/2010/12/02/enabling-remote-access-to-device-manager-on-server-core/
Any ideas?
The Hyper-V Manager works as-well-as the Policy Editor, just not Device Manager.
will Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) supports Windows 8 as a Virtual Machine(Guest OS) in the Hypervisor?
Hi all,
We have a requirement like need to check Windows 8 as a Virtual Machine(Guest OS) in Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1 (SP1). Is this supportable and need any driver or patches?

P2V – Hyper-V
Hi,
I just wonder if somebody could help me. I’m looking for free tool (or very cheap) which will move my Windows Server 2003 with 400GB HDD (almost full) to .vhd (or .vhdx as I’m going to use Windows server 2012 as a host).
I wanted to use Disk2vhd but unfortunately I have to increase size of the HDD to 500GB and it has to be fixed. I also prefer to do this as quickly as possible as basically, as file is quite big, create it directly instead of using imaging tools and restore it on Virtual Machine.
Could you advise please?
Thank you.
How to NIC Team in Hyper-V Server 2012
I'm trying to find literature for setting up NIC teaming in Hyper-V 2012 Server (ie: Server Core), all the literature uses the Server Manager GUI aside from
http://virtualisationandmanagement.wordpress.com/tag/nic-team/
which makes reference to using Power Shell Commands (but also requires a GUI for Network Connections)
How to Calculate Hyper-V virtual machine memory usage
Hi,
I have tried to calculate Hyperv Virtual machine memory usage percentage value.
But i can't get it correctly. Using wmi script to fetch the value with UUID basis. Please see the script below
(e.g)
"SELECT WorkingSetSize,Name FROM Win32_Process WHERE Name like 'vmwp%' and CommandLine like '%41FD4-DA31-4DC0-BED5-CB52A477D1%'"
Here I have check with vmwp process and with vm UUID ( I don't know, is this correct to get the vm metrics. ).
and used the below formula get the final value.
Memory Usage = ( WorkingSetSize/(1024*1024) ) / <Total Allocated
Memory> * 100
I have got a very minimum value like 1 to 5 percentage. i have connected the vm machine ( right click - Task Manager )
and physical memory value is totally different. Its around 25 to 30 %.
So kindly help to calculate hyperv Virtual Machine memory usage value.
Thanks in advance !

Windows server 2008 R2 host (with hyper-V installed) FREEZE when backing up data with DPM 2010 server.
Posted in DPM section to.
Here's my quick overlook of the simple architecture
- 1 Server DPM 2010 on win 2008 R2
- 1 Server 2008 R2 with hyper-v installed... 2 virtual machine on it... 1 is SQL server and the other one is a TServer.
i've read the folowing link but it`s about KB982210 : "The startup time increases or hangs at the logon “Welcome” screen if you frequently backup Hyper-V virtual machines on a Windows Server 2008 R2 system" and this aint what'S happening. My server FREEZE and stop responding during backup. Have to do a hard reset and that`s aint good cause all virtual machine stop working to.
server spec for my host :
Xeon E5645 @ 2.4GHz - 16Gb ram - Lenovo server.
Nothing is showing in log and i've read the net to... Thanks for helping guys !
Test laboratory setup with Hyper-V Server - USB dongle, RemoteFX and licensing
We are working on complex software combination setup for our client. It includes several MS, our own amd non-MS products. To meet project requirement we must have modeling environment to install it all and play with it to get proper solution. After reading a lot of stuff from MS site we've chosen Hyper-V Server as virtualization planform. It was told we don't need anything except client OS licenses we got as TechNet subscriber. No one of Windows Server Licensing datasheet on MS site references Hyper-V Server. So far so good.
One of software products uses USB dongle for copyprotection so we need to bring it to the test environment. RemoteFX was actively advertized as one of possible solutions. Why not use it on Hyper-V Server:
Hyper-V Server is a dedicated stand-alone product that contains the hypervisor, Windows Server driver model, virtualization capabilities, and supporting components such as failover clustering, but does not contain the robust set of features and roles as the Windows Server operating system. As a result Hyper-V Server produces a small footprint and and requires minimal overhead. Organizations consolidating servers where no new Windows Server licenses are required or where the servers being consolidated are running an alternative OS may want to consider Hyper-V Server.
So it was configured (btw. it requires extra video card - Intel onboard video is not enough) from Hyper-V Server console. We use RemoteFX for the only Win7 Ent vm for USB dongle injection. We got what we wanted. It functioned for months.
Now the sad part of story. Steel logic is (as usully it was found only AFTER we got problem)
- RemoteFX is part of RDS
- RDS have to be licensed on Windows Server
- We have to buy RDS CAL
- We have to install RDS licensing server, activate it and install bought CALs on it.
The problem is not to spend money but to do it in the right time. Now the work stoped. Technet doesn't provide RDS CAL for testing.
Now the questoins list
- Is my licensing problem insight correct?
- Who is responsible for missing exlanation of RemoteFX licensing policy on Hyper-V Server, or I'm wrong? Is it described somewhere?
- My test environment is not a part of oranisation domain but virtualization platform (Hyper-V Server itself) is. All my coworkers are also users of the domain. The lab virtual network is routed with phisycal LAN (one of VMs attached to
both networks and has RRAS configured).
Can I install licensing server required for the lab into the virtual network without joining it to the domain infrastructure? (I'd like to keep the lab as isolated sandbox as much as it's possible)
Thanks in advance for your help. I hope my English is acceptable.

XP/SP3 & Hyper-V RC1 - cannot upgrade integration services
I have two XP / SP3 vitrual machines, and on each one, after I dismiss the "found new hardware" wizard, and try to install the Integration Services, I receive the "A previous installation og Hyper-V integration services has been detected"
I click OK to "upgrade or repair", and I get the following error message:
"An error has occured: Fatal error during installation."
My event viewer doesn't seem to have any relevant information.
Ideas?

Standalone Hyper-V is too painful to use
This is really a complaint not a question. I've been using the free version of VMware ESXi for development testing for years. I keep reading about how Hyper-V is catching up to VMware in features. I was excited about the free stand-alone version and decided to try it out. I downloaded the Hyper-V 2012 RC standalone version and installed it. This thing is a trainwreck! There is not a chance in hell that anyone will ever use this thing in scenarios like mine. It obviously intented to be used by IT Geniuses in a domain only. I would really like a version that I can up and running in less than half an hour like esxi. How the heck is anyone going to evaluate it this in a reasonable manner? I feel like it was just thrown out there so Microsoft could claim they have a free virtualization server like MS?
Steps for free ESXi.
1. Download from website burn to CD/DVD.
2. Boot from disc, follow steps to overwrite hard drive and install.
3. After reboot, config management IP address.
4. Go back to my desk and open my web browser to Management IP and download client.
5. Install ESX client and start running VMs!
Steps for Hyper-V
1. Download from website burn to CD/DVD.
2. Boot from disc, follow steps to overwrite hard drive and install.
3. After reboot, config management IP address.
4. Scour the internet for server tools that install the Hyper-V management snap-in for Win 7.
5. Install server management tools pack.
6. Go to add/remove and enable the Hyper-V snap-in.
7. Open Hypver-V snap-in and connect TRY to connect to box.
8. Receive generic authentication error message.
9. Spend several hours scouring the internet looking for registry hacks, firewall hacks that actually allow you to connect to a damn hyper-v box!
10. Eventually you come across the website/project. http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/HVRemote
This site walks you through all the script changes/reboots you have to make to connect to bloody hyper-v!
Here is what I would prefer
I don't want to download any tools at all. I just want a HTML5 web server on this box that allows me to do everything I can from the Hyper-V console and doesn't make me configure anything other than a password. It would be great if it was themed similar to the new Windows Azure Virtual Machines console. I doesn't have to provide like a built-in viewer to actually interact with the VMs, I would be happy with a remote desktop style connection.

Event ID: 13100 The scope 'GUID' could not be found in authorization store.
Hello,
I am recieving these errors approximately 11 times with 11 different "GUIDS" every 30 minutes. I do have 11 VM's which are all working excellent and have all been running at least a year now. I am hoping this is not serious and there is a way to make these
errors go away. I searched through the registry for any reference to these guids as well as the "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\InitialStore.xml" with no luck. Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated!

setting up a server
ok now that new hypervisors and servers are coming out redmond, its time to work on my server setup
if i install hyper-v on bare hardware, what is the easiest way to get existing VMs onto the machine
given a cd or dvd with an OS on it, creating a set of vhds from them
for ex, windows 7 can be used until 2020 so i have a bunch of existing vhds with various skus of visual studio, 8 is another option too now
i am also considering some linux on the machine too so that I can use it for development purposes, which distributions are best integrated into hyper-v
finally the piece de resistance, some more vhds for a game server such as Halo 2 etc

Guest failover clustering attempt results in SCSI-3 Persistent Reservation not supported message
I have a fully working 4-node Hyper-V cluster with shared iSCSI storage. Hardware is an HP c3000 blade chassis and four HP BL460c G7 blades. Storage is an HP MSA p2000 iSCSI array.
The shared storage at the host level validates fine with no errors about SCSI-3 Persistent Reservations, and we are actively using this for several VMs with an 8 way MPIO configuration.
However, now we need to create a guest level failover cluster to support a SQL Server 2008 two node active/passive cluster. Having created the VMs and configured iSCSI and MPIO, I have run the cluster validation and unexpectedly received errors that indicate the storage does not support SCSI-3 Persistent reservations. This is the same storage (just different LUNs) that the hosts are working correctly with.
The only difference I can see between the guests and the hosts is the Virtual NICs. I have tried both synthetic and legacy (the former is our default) and neither seem to support SCSI-3 Persistent Reservations. I'm assuming that MPIO is contributing to this issue as we have successfully implemented this in the past WITHOUT MPIO.
Can anyone shed any light on what we may have missed please? This is rather critical to our build. Thanks in advance.

Using Differencing disks, SysPrep images are not activated.
Sysprepped imagaes (activated) when imported for a new VM stay activated. But incase the new VM is using a differencing disk which is a child of the activated SysPrepped disk on boot the image says its pending for activation.
Can this be fixed ?
