Domain controller VMs using dynamic VHDx corrupt after power failure

$

Over the past couple of months I have experienced 4 dead 2008 R2 SP1 domain controllers after power failure on Hyper-V 2012 hosts. The domain controller VMs will start after power failure and have varying degrees of file system corruption. In each instance the corruption has rendered the domain controller unusable. The problem has not occurred with every power failure, but in testing the failure rate has been over 10%.

The Hyper-v 2012 hosts are as follows:

  • Dell PowerEdge r720 with flash backed write cache on Raid controller
  • Dell PowerEdge T710 with battery backed write cache on Raid controller
  • Dell PowerEdge T310 with a single SATA hard drive and write cache disabled
  • Generic system with a single SATA hard drive and write cache disabled

The VM configuration experiencing corruption is as follows:

  • Each VM was created from a base 2008 R2 SP1 syspreped VHDx image template file (40 Gigs)
  • The image template was originally created as a VHD and was then converted to a VHDx
  • The VHDx file has 512k sectors instead of the native 512e of VHDx files (a result of VHD - VHDx conversion)
  • Each VM was assigned 1024 Meg RAM and 1 virtual processor
  • The domain controllers were created by promoting the base 2008 r2 install to a DC after base image deployment
  • Only one corrupt VM was not running the 2012 integration components. The rest were running current 2012 integration components

I have done extensive testing on this issue and the problem for me seems to revolve around the VHDx file format. I have managed numerous Hyper-v installations since the original 2008 server version was released and I have never seen corruption like this until 2012 and VHDx.

For the past few days I have been testing fixed sized VHD VMs on a 2012 host and I have not been able to reproduce the data corruption issue. I seem to only be able to reproduce the problem when using dynamic VHDx files. I have not done any testing on 2012 hosts with fixed size VHDx files or dynamic VHD files.

It would be great to hear from anybody else experiencing similar issues so that we can compare notes and hopefully get to the bottom of this problem.

Enabling SR-IOV feature in two places? Is it needed?

Hi all;

As you know, we can enable SR-IOV feature in two different places: 1) An external virtual switch and 2) In a Virtual NIC.

Now my questions are:

  • Why we enable this feature in an external virtual switch, as by definition, this feature makes it possible to bypass the virtual networking stack in a guest?
  • Can I only enable this feature in a vNIC, without configuring the corresponding vSwitch?

Thanks

Trouble with passthrough disks when migrating a VM into Windows Server 2012 cluster

I am in the midst of upgrading my failover cluster servers to WS2012.  I created a new cluster and I am migrating my VMs into it.  Most VMs are working fine in the new cluster, but I am having trouble with one VM which has some passthrough disks attached to it, which are connected to an iSCSI SAN.  The host connects to the SAN, and the disks are connected to the VM in Hyper-V settings.

I got that VM running on one of the WS2012 cluster servers, but when I try to add it into the cluster, I have trouble with the attached disks.  I tried adding the disks to the cluster before adding the VM to the cluster.  I also tried not adding the disks to the cluster.  I tried attaching them to the VM before and after adding the VM to the cluster.  I can’t seem to get it to work no matter which way I do it.

In most cases, the VM fails to start with the following error:

'Virtual Machine DB1' failed to start.

'DB1' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID 11B3CCBE-0F7F-4774-8156-810E969D1954)

'DB1' Synthetic SCSI Controller (Instance ID 6F38B394-4E10-4CB9-BFA9-A22A970F8BCC): Failed to Power on with Error 'General access denied error' (0x80070005). (Virtual machine ID 11B3CCBE-0F7F-4774-8156-810E969D1954)

'DB1': Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service Account does not have permission to open attachment '\\?\scsi#disk&ven_scale&prod_storage_node#1&1c121344&0&000002#{53f56307-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}'. Error: 'General access denied error' (0x80070005). (Virtual machine ID 11B3CCBE-0F7F-4774-8156-810E969D1954)

Under WS2008R2, I was able to use this procedure to set it up.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2009/02/20/adding-a-pass-through-disk-to-a-highly-available-virtual-machine.aspx

But as WS2012 does not have a “refresh virtual machine config” feature, I cannot use the same procedure.

Does anyone know what the procedure is in WS2012?

I have two Windows2012 server(serverA,serverB) and installed Hyper-V.

I tried Hyper-V replica replication from serverA to serverB.

One guest Windows2008R2 of serverA is replicated and still working fine.

But the other Windows2008R2 guest of serverA can not be replicated.

When I tried to replicate , I had failed to enable replication with 0x80004004 error like the below.

I tried solution 1 and 2 of the below link but same error still happen.

Importing Hyper-V VM to Windows 8.1 Hyper-V from Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Export gives error

Hi,

On Windows 8.1 Preview with running Hyper-V I can't import any more exported VM's from Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V export. It worked great on Windows 8. Of course I manage to use just VHD, and everything is working, but this is additional step, first to create VM.

Is it a Windows 8.1 Preview bug or expected behavior?

Shared storage in a Replica Environment

Hi everyone,

I have a question to ask. I'll setting up a 2 host Hyper-V 2012 Datacenter with Replica function and 4 VM's inside them. I would like to know if it's good practise to configure the Virtual Machine Disks in a shared location located in a physical File Server.

- Is there any problem or consideration to setting up this shared storage in a Replica infraestructura based in certificates?

- It's better to have the Virtual Disks in the same Virtual machine location or it doesn't matter if I put the virtual disks destination to an external File Server?

I've read many TechNet Articles and forums but I haven't got the correct explanation.

Thanks in advance.

Multiple Replication

I'm using Windows 2012 Hyper-V and enabled replication of a virtual machine. Which works great.

Is it possible to replicate this specific VM to a 2nd server? IE have multiple replications running of a specific VM.

One --> Many Replication

I've just started looking at Hyperv2012 this morning and I'm impressed with what I see, and got live migration and replication working between two servers with DAS without any problems.

My question is this. Is it possible to have replication from one source server to multiple destination servers. The reason you may want to do this is to maintain both local and remote DR recovery systems?

I'm pretty sure the answer to this question is no, so if anyone from MS is listening could it go on the wish list.

Sleep and hibernation is working on Server 2012 with started hypervisor! I do not know why...

Hi,
I enabled Hyper-V role in the Microsoft Windows Server 2012 on testing computer (PC with i7 CPU and 16GB RAM). I found very strange behavior. The sleep mode was enabled and after command “powercfg /hibernation on” the hibernation is also working.

I tested sleep (S3) and hibernation with started hypervisor and with running virtual machine. I tested sleep and hibernation triggered by power button and even with time-out that was set in the Power Options (I set sleep after 1 minute and later hibernate after 1 minute and wait).

Sleep and hibernation is working! I do not understand why. Sleep and hibernation should be functional only on Client Hyper-V on Windows 8 and not on the Server 2012.

Some examples:
--------------------------------
Testing workstation (i7, 16GB RAM) with Server 2012 and with started hypervisor:
--------------------------------
C:\Users\Administrator>powercfg /a
The following sleep states are available on this system:
    Standby (S3)
    Hibernate
    Fast Startup

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
    Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

    Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

    Standby (Connected)
The hypervisor does not support this standby state.
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

    Hybrid Sleep
The hypervisor does not support this standby state.

--------------------------------
My laptop (i5, 8GB RAM) with Server 2012 and with started hypervisor:
--------------------------------
>powercfg /a
The following sleep states are not available on this system:
    Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.
An internal system component has disabled this standby state.
                Hypervisor

    Standby (S2)

An internal system component has disabled this standby state.
                Hypervisor

2012 Server VM VHDX appears corrupt

Had some disk issues with the raid on my Hyper-V 2012 server. However now that I've resolved those issues I was powering up all my VM's and the all powered up properly except for one. The problem VM is of course my Exchange 2013 VM. The VM won't boot properly and I get an error saying unmountable boot volume. I tried mounting that disk in another 2012 server so I could run checkdisk. It gets a drive letter but chkdsk just sits there and doesn't run. It's a lab environment so I do not have a backup so I'm hoping I can fix the disk somehow.

When installing guest OS by Hyper-V or Vmware Guest,

If we temporarily increase the CPU and memory resource of that VM machine, installation speed will speed up ?

I'm installing in the hypervisor that is currently running hyper-v 2012 or a new hypervisor (both are having the same issue)

hyper-v 2012 has no problem finding the drives but R2 seems to have this problem.

does R2 missing any driver that R1 has?

when I try to rescan and browse to the hyperv 2012 R2 iso file (preview beta), the following error found

No Signed device drivers were found.

anyone has the same problem as me?

Thanks

Hyper-v Network Configuration.

Hi Team ,

we have 1 network card with dual port with each hyper-v node for 6 Node cluster. we are thinking about keep different VLan for each type of traffic. Diffrent Vlan for Mgmt,Heartbeat,CSV and 2 VLAn for virtual machine.

Please let me know how we can setup the  6 node Hyper-v cluster in best way by keeping diffrent traffic in different VLAn.

please verify our assumption.

will create two virtual switch on two network ports and than use one for MGMT,VMtraffic1 and VMtraffic 2 and than second vswitch /nic for heartbeat and CSV,live migration.

Anu suggestion if we can do it more better way.. cant have more than two network ports

VM hiccups during file copy in Windows 2012 and SMB 3.0

$

Hello!

I have built the cluster with 4 Hyper-V cluster hosts and a storage over SMB 3.0. Everything is working fine on the hosts and storage when I copy a file of 4GB+. The problem appears when I copy the file to one of the VMs that is hosted on the storage.

Here is what I get:

The speed in this case falls to 15MBps. In the beginning it was looking good for about 10 seconds. The speed was averaging to 90MBps. I am copying the file from another physical workstation outside of the cluster but connected to the same physical switch.

Any idea on why it can happened? Have I created the SMB Share wrong? Configurations? The same host can accept the same file with the full 1Gbps speed.

Thank you!

Network adapter Configuration error in Hyper-V 2012

$

We have a Server 2012 Failover Cluster with 4 nodes in the cluster.  We just migrated from Server 2008 R2 SP1 using the cluster migration wizard last week.

When a VM is in a "Stopped" state and I do a "Quick Migration" to another node in the cluster, the network adapter loses its connection to the virtual switch and I get a "Configuration Error".

When a VM is powered on, live migration and quick migration work fine.

This was never a problem before in Server 2008 R2 SP1 and there was a refresh vm configuration option which resolved some of these issues but that doesn't exist in 2012.

Is this a bug or is there something I am missing?

AVHD files exist despite there is no snapshots

$

Good day,

I have a virtual machine on a host server , it have one virtual hard drive that is fixed size , no snapshots was taken . 2 AVHD files exist that belong to that virtual machine in addition to the original Virtual hard disk:

harddisk_1.avhd , harddisk_2.avhd , and the original vhd file : harddisk.vhd

when inspecting the Harddisk on the settings of the VM it shows that

"differencing virtual hard disk" and it is harddisk_2.avhd , when click on inspect (from within same windows) it shows "differencing virtual hard disk" and it is harddisk_1.avhd , when click on inspect (from within same second windows) it shows "fixed size virtual machine hard disk" and it is harddisk.vhd ....

how can i get rid of the avhd files ? note that I shut down the VM and start up , but avhd files still exist.

another question, how did they have been created, I didn't create any snapshot nor added virtual hard disks !!!
