Configure networking Hyper-V cluster

$

Hi!

Are playing around with Windows Server 2012 and have some questions regarding network configuration.

We have Team 0 that we are using for Administration and Live Migration.

We have Team 1 that we are using for Production.

Should we configure these be on different net? for example say Adm/LM be on 10.0.0.0 and Production on 192.168.0.0 or could both be on the same network ?

Thanks for answers.

VM with dynamic Memory in Bootloop

Hey there,

in a Server 2012 Cluster there is a VM with Server 2003 Ent. SP2 x86 with dynamic Memory which hangs in a bootloop. There is no Bluescreen or something like this. Change it to static memory, everything is fine.

tried:
- reinstalled the Integration Services
- exported and imported the VM
- installed older integration services
no changes to the behavior of the VM in startprocess.

Can anyone help with a solution?

Thanks!

Hyper-V 2012 failover cluster design questions

Havn't found answers in MS documentation and blogs for the following two questions:

1. With Hyper-V 2012 and failover clustering, it's possible to deploy HA VM's either to HA SMB 3.0 fileshares or to CSV's (like with previous Windows server versions). What are the advantages and disadvantages of using SMB 3.0 or CSV's? Is there any comparision table available of both solutions?

2. Have to deploy a 2 node cluster with a HP MSA 2000 G3 shared SAS storage. This should be supported and is documented in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj822937.aspx and http://blogs.msdn.com/b/clustering/archive/2012/06/02/10314262.aspx. But both guides mention that it's necessary to create storage space(s) either before or after creating the failover cluster. But I can't see the reason why I have to create a storage space as an "additional layer", because the MSA 2000 can provide several different RAID protected volumes to Windows with the internal SW, like any other iSCSI or FC SAN provides LUN's. Are "storage space(s)" mandatory with Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) connected physical disk?

Thank you all in advance for any help!

Hyper-V Role installation fails without reason (Windows Server 2012)

Hi,

We are building a new Hyper-V infratructure, based on Windows Server 2012 Datacanter and multiple HP ML350p Gen8 servers. We've been deploying lost of Server 2012 Hyper-V projects lately (all HP G6 servers), without any problems at all, but this project is a real pain:

We are unable to install the Hyper-V role on any server, at all! There's four of them! All hosts are HP ML350p Gen8, Server 2012 Datacenter, latest updates/firmware/drivers (HP SPP 2012.10.0). BIOS settings are correct/verified for virtualization.
We simply install Hyper-V via Server Manager without any modifications (not selecting any network adapters either, this is all done later using Virtual Network ).

The installation reboots the server, and during boot, the installation fails. After reboot, the Server Manager sais there's been an unexpected error, and have a nice day.

I've been digging through the CBS.log file, and there a very small ERROR portion during installation:

Network adapter Configuration error in Hyper-V 2012

$

We have a Server 2012 Failover Cluster with 4 nodes in the cluster.  We just migrated from Server 2008 R2 SP1 using the cluster migration wizard last week.

When a VM is in a "Stopped" state and I do a "Quick Migration" to another node in the cluster, the network adapter loses its connection to the virtual switch and I get a "Configuration Error".

When a VM is powered on, live migration and quick migration work fine.

This was never a problem before in Server 2008 R2 SP1 and there was a refresh vm configuration option which resolved some of these issues but that doesn't exist in 2012.

Is this a bug or is there something I am missing?

Hyper-V 2012 with guest OS running 2003r2 losing network after switch ARP table showing 0000.0000.0000 for only VMs running 2003r2

I have built a Hyper-V failover cluster using Windows 2012 on 3 Dell PowerEdge M520 Blades connected to a Dell EqualLogic PS4100 array. The blades plug into Dell PowerConnect M6348 switches in the back of the chassis. The network cards are Broadcom. In total 12 cards, 4 are plugged into the iSCSI network. 4 are teamed using the inbuilt windows teaming with networks created to carry internal production vLANs, CSV, heartbeat, Live Migration and Management. The other 4 are used in a team for carrying external DMZ vLAN traffic.

All updates applied and all drivers and firmware are up to date.

I have migrated and now have 18 guest OS running on this cluster, Windows Server 2003r2, 2008r2 and 2012, a few client OS, XP and Windows 7.

The problem I am having is only with the 2 Windows Server 2003r2 and 1 XP VMs. Every 20-30 minutes the VMs lose the ability to connect to anything outside of the vLAN they are assigned too. They can ping each other but not the gateway. Looking in the ARP table of the switch the mac address for these VMs change and become 0000.0000.0000. Before they change to this they are the static assigned mac assigned to the VM. To get the VMs network to work outside of the IP range it is on I have to just simulate the network cable being unplugged. Be that repairing the connection on the VM, live migrate the machine to another host or just change the setting to not connected and back. 20-30 minutes later the mac address becomes 0000.0000.0000 again.

An ipconfig on the VM show the correct mac at all times. No events in the events logs at all when this happens, host or VM.

I have tried the following;

Fully patched the VMs

Update the host integration services

Removed the adapters and added new ones

Changed IP

Changed IP Range

Changed MAC address of VM

Removed hidden devices

Removed entries in the register for network adapters

Tried legacy adapter where possible

Disabling TCP Task Offload settings, physical and VM

Enable VMQ and disabling VMQ, physical and VM

Yet still after 20-30 minutes the VM lose connection outside of the IP range they are on, the MAC address in the switches ARP table changes 0000.0000.0000 hence the loss of network outside of the IP range.

I have check for rouge devices on the network, doubled checked all VMs to make sure no duplicated MAC address have been used. I have gone over our switch settings but cannot find anything here that would or possibly only affect VMs running 2003r2 or XP. I don't believe it is a switch network problem anymore as it is only these 3 VMs with 2003r2 or XP that are having this issue, the other 15 VMs that are 2008r2, 2012 or Win 7 are working great on the same hardware connecting to the same switches in the same IP ranage.

I am now at a total loss as to what to try next to get the 2003r2 and XP VMs.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Barry

I have a server that I have installed HYPER-V with 8 windows 7 guest VM's. when I configure the VM with a static IP Microsoft security essentials will not update the AV database on its own. To test my theory I left a few VM's with DHCP and they update with no issues.

NIC Team - Live Migration performance

$

I've got a 2 node Server 2012 Hyper-V cluster, and each node has 6 gigabit NIC ports. 2 are dedicated to iSCSI traffic, but the other 4 are in a Team. When I Live Migrate 20+ VMs, it seems to me that I should be able to achieve at least 2-3Gbps (adjusting for network overhead and such) transfers. I realize there are a great number of ways to configure a team in Server 2012, and I've experimented with all of them: Static Teaming, Switch Independent, LACP, and each of these can either be Address Hash or Hyper-V port. I've occasionally seen brief spikes up to 1.5Gbps, but that's it. The rest of the time it's at a very steady 1Gbps.

I've got these servers connected to 2 ProCurve 2910al switches with a 10gb backplane, and the switches are not being taxed with any other workloads. When I use the LACP teaming, I have tried both LACP-enabled trunks and enabling Active LACP on the relevant ports.

My biggest question is: is this even feasible? Has anyone achieved 2Gbps+ Live Migration speeds without using 10gb NIC cards?

Anyone? Bueller?

Starting a VM while Backup runs...

Hi,

I just discovered that I cannot start (from stopped or saved state) a Hyper-v- VM while Windows Backup is doing his job.

Do I realy have to wait (can be long) that backup finishes? Is there another solution?

Isn't VSS supposed to help with this kind of issues?

Any help?

Thanks.

Server Down! 100% CPU on all VMs

$

This started early Thursday morning, shortly after which I opened a support case with Microsoft. Over the past 30 hours they haven't been any help--they've bounced me around from team to team, trying to figure out who knows anything about Hyper-V. More than one tech has asked me where the Desktop is or to run Internet Explorer for him. In the meantime I must wait 4-5 hours at a time for a callback from yet another team. Ouch.

I'm hoping someone here might be able to assist.

I believe the problem must be on the host, as it's common to all VMs--even brand new ones that I create. The offending processes in each VM are:

  1. PerfMon.exe
  2. TaskMgr.exe

My customer is undergoing a critical server-down-level incident--counter sales are severely impacted due to the loss of the accounting system and staff are unable to work. I need to figure this out ASAP.

Thanks,
Jeff Bowman

I have just installed my 1st HyperV server and it seems a bit sluggish.

Does Microsoft have a program to stress test the system(CPU, memory, NIC, Harddrive) and provide a report...?

Cannot create Virtual Network Switch Windows 8

$

Good day,

I hope someone can help.

I have previously created Virtual Network Switches, but if I remember correctly, I disabled something regarding Hyper-V in order to run certain application(s).

Currently, when trying to create a new Virtual Network Switch (Internal, External, or Private), I get the following Error:

[Exclamation Window Title] Virtual Switch Manager for SR21694-PC

[Error Caption] Error applying Virtual Switch Properties changes

[Error Description] Failed while creating virtual Ethernet switch.

Event viewer does not log any of the errors, only the following:

[Event ID: 20003]

Driver Management has concluded the process to add Service VMSMP for Device Instance ID ROOT\VMS_VSMP\0000 with the following status: 0. (As far as I understand the "0" result means "successful")

[Event ID: 9]

Switch ******** (Friendly Name: New Virtual Switch) successfully initialized.

I have fully updated Windows 8 (Enterprise x64) and disabled and re-enabled the Hyper-V features as provided as solution in other forums, but with no result. All VCRedist packages installed, all versions of Dot Net Framework, All features for Hyper-V enabled.

I also disabled and enabled DEP, which made no difference.

Any assistance or opinions would be highly appreciated.

Kindest regards,

Henri

Fix a WiFi Hyper-V Switch

$

I am getting a "Failed while adding Virtual Ethernet switch connections"  when trying to establish a virtual switch over a WiFi connection which I had previously used.  The details say "Ethernet port {GUID} bind failed.  The requested resource is in use. (0x800700AA).  "

Uninstalling and reinstalling the WiFi adapter changed the value of the GUID but still same error message.

There is no vEthernet adapter showing in the adapter properties window. My assumption is that the adapter is hidden from view in the window and / or there is some binding stored in some xml files or registry keys someplace linked to the Virtual Switch that needs to be manually cleaned.  However, I have not yet found where these are.

Has anyone figured out a good way to resolve this issue?

Unable to Ping Minimal Hyper-V Server after Setting up a External Virtual Network

$

I was on my client machine in the Hyper-V remote Manager studio and was connected to the hyper-v server and setting up the external virtual network so I could create my first virtual machine. In the networking section when I selected external as the type for the networking of the virtuals, the manager warned me that communication might be lost and asked if I wanted to proceed. To which I selected it.

Then a small box with a continously running progress bar came up and it never exited. After 2 minutes I killed management studio from the task manager for the modal dialog box never exited. Upon restart of the manager, it couldn't see the server.

I rebooted both the server and the client and there appears that communication to the server is now impossible. I can ping from the server to client, but not visa versa. Here are the stats

  • Hyper-V server 2012 RC (stand alone not as role)
  • Windows 7 client
  • Installed Hyper-V remote management configuration on both machines
  • Ping fails going from client to server (or all machines)
  • Ping succeeds going from server to client.

What can I do to resolve this issue? Can I roll back the virtual network settings using PowerShell? If so what are those commands?

VM hot copy?

$
0
0

I'm trying to figure out how to do a VM hot copy of individual running VMs and would appreciate any insight or suggestions.

Goal

To be able to make copies of running virtual machine VHD files to another location.  We want to be able to have copies of the VHD files themselves of the running systems available on another failover system.  The idea is that if the single blade chassis/network/SAN go offline we have all of the VHDs in another location that we can quickly bring online without having to do a long VHD retrieval process but only what data content has changed since the VHD was last backed up.

Enviroment

Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter running on several blades in 1 blade chassis (that's all we have)

Hyper-V VMs running in a cluster between the blades

SAN attached as a quorum drive to the cluster (we only have 1 SAN)

A large Dell server with lots of RAM/CPUs/HDD space to be the failover machine (it's what we could afford)

Ideas

The problem is 90% of these VMs need to stay online so I want to be able to hot copy the running VHD files.

VMM cloning requires a VM to be offline which is not possible as does copy/paste or robocopy.

Backup software like DPM & BackupExec backup the entire VM Host server in one giant backup but I want a direct copy of the VHD itself.

Windows Backup Services makes a VHD of the device being backed up but these are non-bootable VHD files.

We've looked into Symantec System Recovery as it is what we use on our physical systems but that requires doing a drive clone image and then converting to VHD and is time consuming.  It's also rather expensive even for educational licenses.

I've looked for hot copy tools for Hyper-V VHD files and I've had no luck finding good resources.

Suggestions?  I'm not looking to be told to do it some other specific way, this is what I'm trying to accomplish so I'd appreciate only comments that help me attain my goal and not something like "just backup the entire host with DPM and deal with it."

Hyper V 2012 - No Options to set up replication

Hello,

I have two servers running Hyper V 2012 Core.  I want to set up the replication feature.  There are many resources that explain how to do this, and it seems pretty easy.  I do not have any options to configure replication in the screens referenced by the instructions.  I have spent hours researching this and have come up empty handed.   There should be options to enable Replication and Migration and they don't appear.

Should my Hyper-V 2012 iSCSI switches be in a stack or independant?

I'm getting ready to setup a Hyper-V 2012 cluster with 2 host servers. I have two HP servers, two HP iSCSI switches and an EMC VNX SAN. Should my two HP switches be in a switch stack or should they be two individual switches?

Services set to automatic like Exchange, SQL, System Center, don't start in Hyper-v VMs

I have a number of VM servers running on a Hyper-v cluster. Whenever I start more then a couple at the same time the services on the server don't start automatically.  Normal system services seem to start fine, but the Exchange services, SQL, System center, Citrix and other services like that do not start automatically.

Any ideas where I can start to figure out this issue?
