Create Collection - Pooled machines on CSV fails

$

Hi!

I am having issues using CSV With Hyper-V RDS VDI functions. The lab worked perfectly, With local disks only. The Production environment is going to be Highly Available, and we will use CSV. Normal CSV functions, on manually created Virtual machines Works just fine.

However, when I run the Create Collection wizard, and use CSV instead of local drive, something goes wrong. Anyone seen this before?

Unfortunately my account isn't yet verified, so I am unable to upload a screenshot at this time.

Windows Server 2012 - Can occasionally not access second virtual hard drive inside a VM

$

I run Windows Server 2012 RTM Hyper-V and I can occasionally not access the second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) attached to the VM through the virtual SCSI controller. I can however access the first hard drive that is connected with the virtual IDE controller.

I get the following warning in the event log under “Administrative Events” every 30 seconds when this happens:

  • Log Name: System
  • Source: Storvsc
  • ID: Storvsc
  • Message: “Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.”

I get this error once or twice a week and it has caused serious problems since one of the virtual servers that have this problem is a fileserver and the second hard drive contains all the data.

The only quick solution to the problem that I have found is to force the virtual machine to stop using the “Turn Off” feature since a normal shut down does not work (stops at shutting down the event log or similar) and then start the virtual machine again.

You can also wait for about 30 minutes or longer until the disk for some reason becomes accessible again by itself.

My research into this problem shows that:

  • Only 2 of the 10 VMs running Windows Server 2012 RTM that I have, have this problem.
  • Both these VMs have a second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) that cannot be accessed for 30 minutes or longer.
  • Check Disk of the virtual hard drive shows no errors.
  • The second hard drive is attached to the virtual SCSI controller.
  • I can find no problems at all with the physical storage on the (not related) 4 hosts that I have. The problem exists only in the VMs.

I have now attached the second virtual hard drive to the virtual IDE controller to see if this permanently fixes this problem (i.e. does not happen for at least a week).

Is there something wrong with the virtual SCSI controller or the virtual SCSI device driver that comes with Windows Server 2012 RTM? Does anyone else have this problem?

Hyper-V DCs seem to update each other without a NIC

Hi, Can anyone explain the following please? I have been trying to import two VM DCs which are both global Cats on to a test bed. One to convince myself that I have a good backup and two to test out other issues before making them live on the production Servers. So I import the primary DC and it tells me that it know it has the FSMO roles but that it does not consider them valid. This server has not replicated successfully with any of it's partners.

So I kill that VM and import the backup DC and it runs OK and I can access it's AD. I then shut this VM down and remove it's NIC. I import the original PDC and run it up and it says the same as before. I kill this VM again and run up the backup DC and it now has the same issue as the PDC. Very Strange?

Unable to see website on virtual machine from public internet

I have server 2008 R2 with Hyper V running a single Virtual machine. The virtual machine is server 2008 R2 and hosting a website. I cannot access the website from the internet.  I have gone thru the configuration of setting up a virtual network, but still cannot access the site.

Hardware server has 4 physical NIC's.

NIC one is for the host machine only

NIC two is setup and running Microsoft Virtual Network Switch Protocol only

NIC three and four are not used.

Virtual NIC on host machine is setup and configured with Client for MS Networks, QoS Pkt Sched, File and Print Sharing for MS Networks, IPV6 (Obtain Auto), IPV4 (Populated with the IP that is NAT via Router, Sub, No Gateway, Internal DNS for Pref and Alt), Link layer Mapper I/O, Link Layer Responder.

Hyper V Virtual Network Name: Public

Notes: Microsoft Virtual Switch

External: Pointing to Adapter #2 (NIC 2 on Host)

Allow Managaement OS to Share NIC

Virtual Machine (2008 R2 running IIS 7)

Network Config:

Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter:

Client for MS Networks, QoS Pkt Sched, File and Print Sharing for MS Networks, IPV6 (Obtain Auto), IPV4 (Obtain Auto), Link layer Mapper I/O, Link Layer Responder.

Tested: The public IP is NAT correctly thru router (tested by placing internal IP on another machine and displays website.

The website on the virtual machine is up and running correctly when I use IE on the virtual machine and hit the address and site.

Looking for assistance on this.

Snapshot - Event ID 19542

Event ID 19542

Cannot take snapshot for 'xxxxxxxxxxxx' because one or more synthetic fibre channel controllers are attached. (Virtual machine ID xxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxx)

I get this error when trying to take a snapshot of a VM that does have a Virtual Fiber Connection to an HP SAN. The two VM's I am trying to snapshot are a SQL Cluster and I have using the virtual Fiber connection to present the cluster drives. Is there something special I have to do in Hyper-V 3.0 to get it to take a snapshot of virtual machines with Virtual Fiber Connections? I cannot find any details on this.

Thanks,

John

Hyper-V (RC) launch failed on HP DL-320 G5 Server

I'm having issues getting Hyper-V RC to run on a new HP DL-320 G5 Server with a single Xeon 3050 processor and Windows 2008 Standard Edition x64. Brief outline:

1. I have configured enabled Intel VT and No-Execute in processor settings in the BIOS

2. OS is set to US-locale in all areas (checked here http://www.servercare.nl/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=17)

3. I installed the RC update (Windows6.0-KB949219-x64) before adding the role

4. Checked on the Intel site and verified processor supports Intel VT, and the BIOS seems to support it as its an option.

5. The error in the system log is:

Hyper-V launch failed; processor 1 does not appear to support the features required by Hyper-V. (leaf: 0x1, required: 0x20, features: 0x0)

Everything seems in place, any ideas why its failing to launch?

Thanks,

Hi,

I have one host and another host as replica on Windows 2012. One of VMs' replication starts error out. Here is the error message:

'VMxx' failed to perform the operation. The operation cannot be performed for this virtual machine while it is in its current state. (Virtual machine ID 0D70D887-F66F-4A86-8BEB-152C09910D26)

Meanwhile other VMs' replications work fine.

VLAN Tags and Hyper-V Switches

$

Does the Hyper-V 2012 Virtual Switch support forwarding VLAN-tagged packets to a guest OS with the VLAN tags intact?  In other words, can I have a single virtual NIC handle multiple VLANs by doing the VLAN filtering inside the guest OS?

I would like to run a guest OS that sits on multiple VLANs, and while I could create and delete virtual NICs which are assigned to a single VLAN, it would be much more flexible in my environment to have Hyper-V simply forward frames with the VLAN (802.1q) tags intact so that the guest OS can see the tags and deal with them appropriately.  (looking at running a virtual router that sits across multiple VLANs).

I can't see any obvious way to do this.  I thought that leaving the VLAN tag for the guest off would cause packets to be forwarded unfiltered, but that appears to not be the case.  Does anyone know how to enable forwarding tagged frames through a virtual switch/NIC to a guest OS?

Thanks!

Hyper-V Guest VM's disappeared after orderly reboot (Not Virus Scanning Issue)

I wanted to perform some long overdue maintenance on a hyper-v host.  My setup is two Win2008 R2 Core Hyper-V machines with local disk storage (no san, no virus protection on the hosts).  I powered down the Guest OS's,  exported them from  Virtual1 and copied the to Virtual2.   The guest OS came up and worked no problem on Virtual2.   Later on in the day I powered down Virtual2.  When virtual2 came back up 2 of the 3 guest VM's have disappeared from the management console.

Some items of note...

  • There is no virus protection running on the hosts (others seem to have been having an issue with virus scanning).
  • Event logs show the orderly shutdown of the guest VM's,  event logs then show only 1 of the machines turning back on.
  • I see no useful errors in the event logs related to starting the machines back up
  • There is a single event log entry for "Hyper-v failed creating a new partition (status 11)".  Although, there is plenty of free RAM & Disk space

Anyone have any idea what's going on?  I'm kind of baffled as where to even begin looking.

Thanks for any help,

-eric

i have setup DHCP in domain which is Hyper-v guest. DHCP will issue IP address to system only when i enters MAC id in DHCP console. now the issue is  whenever a new machine or laptop connect to my network it get accessible hyper-v guest like my storage and WebServer. it gets ipp of different range my network range is 192.168.0.XXX

Dynamic Memory on Window Server 2012 RAM is Driver locked in Guest OS

$

Hi@all

i have migrated some HyperV Hosts to Windows Server 2012 and i enabled Dynmic Memory on a guest running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

The Integration Components in the guest OS are up-to-date, but i'm observing something mysterious.

When i open the Task Manager in the guest i can see that, 14500Mb RAM are assigned to the VM and 1700 Mb are available.

But the there no process that consumnes the delta between 14500 an 1700. With RAM Map i can see that 9000 MB are Driver locked.

HyperV Manager is showing that only 6147 MB are assigned to VM.

Does anyone have an explanation for this or observed somehing identitcal?

Thank you

Adrian

Memory settings trough out my VM's,

$

Hello,

My terminal server config is lacking performance with RDP connections and im searching through some possible faults.

I figured NUMA was enabled and want to disable it to see if performance is better.

Let me explain my setup:

I have a ML350 G6 with dual E5606 2.13GHz and 32GB memory.

My host has Hyper-V installed as role with nothing more to do.

My VM's consist of:

DC (Single CPU) with static 3072MB memory.

TMG (Single CPU) with static 3072MB memory.

TS (4 CPU) with static 12288MB memory.

Im unable to add more static memory as the TS VM then wont start.

Let me calculate:

3072+3072+12288= 18432MB

meaning i should have 14336MB free memory.

NUMA is diabled.

My question is, why cant i add more static memory then the 12GB? Is that used for pagefile purpose?

The reason im going for a static memory setup is to see if preformance will be better.

With kind regards, René de Meijer. MIEGroup.

Snapshot gives unknown error

Hello,

I'm not sure that this is the right forum to ask this, but here goes:

I have a Hyper-V machine that when I attempt to create a snapshot, it gives me this error:

Encountered an error while trying to take a snapshot

The snapshot appears in my list:

Snapshot

But, the name that I gave it (ddd) does not appear.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

Hard path limit of 8 in VM with Hyper-v virtual fibre channel?

$

Hello,

I am seeing a strange situation where I cannot exceed 8 paths in a vfc guest and wanted to see if anyone else has seen this.

I have server 2012 parent with Hyper-v and connecting to a storage controllers which have 16 target ports. 8 nodes, 2 ports each.

I have a brocade dual fabric and connect a single initiator to 8 targets in a zone on each fabric.

After enabling the zones I see on the parent 16 virtual ports in my qlogic qconvergedconsole on the Parent server. 8 on each HBA port. I go to my guest and I do not see a lun. I reboot the guest and check for a lun nothing.

After rebooting the server 2012, I check the vm and a lun is seen with 8 only paths. I check the parent and now I only see 4 virtual target ports per HBA.

I tried the same scenario with 4 node controllers and 4 target ports. Same behavior. 16 targets show up in HBA, after reboot of parent server only 8 ports.

Does Hyper-v have a hidden limit of only 8 paths and reduce the number of exposed virtual ports in the parent server?

Has anyone tried more than 8 paths and it work?

Thanks in advance.

Is there a MS equivalent of VMWare View?

Hi,

I want to virtualize desktops in my company -- small business. If possible, I'd like to use MS solutions from the server to the client. Is there a MS equivalent of VMWare View?

I like VMWare View's ability to allow user to continue working even if network connection is not available e.g. during a business trip, an employee can continue working during a flight from NY to LA.

Thanks, Sam

Hello,

I have been doing a live migrations with several machines and I am having an issue with only one of the VM's. It will not do a live migration and gives me the following error.

Error (12700)
VMM cannot complete the host operation on the (ServerName) server because of the error: Storage migration for virtual machine 'SERVER' (2C4C28E1-791A-4474-A74C-1D4E7436D134) failed with error 'Data error (cyclic redundancy check).' (0x80070017).

Migration did not succeed. Mirror operation failed for the source VHD file 'I:\SERVER\SERVER.vhdx' to the destination file 'D:\IMAGES\SERVER\SERVER.vhdx': 'Data error (cyclic redundancy check).'('0x80070017').
Unknown error (0x8000)

Recommended Action
Resolve the host issue and then try the operation again.

Anyone have any suggestions? the server is running fine and there are no other errors that can lead me to the problem?

Thanks,

Virtual Switch - having problems after setting static IP

$

Dell Server, Windows 2012 server, quad NIC teamed and Virtual switch configured. Team is configured on Cisco switch that its plugged into.

With just the Host O/S running and the virtual switch set to DHCP all works ok.

If I set a static v4 IP address the server doesn't communicate with the network properly. I can no longer connect via RDP and I can't ping it remotely by IP.

As soon as I set it to DHCP again all is working.

Any ideas as its got me baffled!

Undoing Hyper-V Cluster Migration Wizard Configuration

$

Hi,

I did a successful migration of a 2008R2 cluster to 2012 using the wizard in failover cluster manager activated by running "Migrate Roles..." (used the following for guidancehttp://blogs.msdn.com/b/clustering/archive/2012/06/25/10323434.aspx).

Everything worked fine from the perspective of the migration itself, but after a week we had to rollback to the 2008R2 cluster (as we were getting intermittent network drops and couldn't pin down the cause). The rollback also worked fine by just taking the resources offline in the 2012 and re-activating them in the 2008R2 cluster.

It will take us some time to get to the bottom of the issue, but that leads me to the problem of doing the migration again once it is all sorted (the problem being that the configuration on the 2012 cluster is stale).

Is it safe to simply delete everything (disk resources, virtual machines, etc) from the 2012 failover cluster manager so that we once again have an empty environment for running the cluster migration wizard?

I am worried about for instance not being able to delete a virtual machine configuration if its clustered resource is offline - I am also thinking maybe destroy the cluster and re-create, but again what if it errors during the destroy because of offline resources and gets itself into a bad state requiring loads of manual clean up and no confidence that it is back to its clean state. I don't have the ability to test this so I want to be sure (if anyone has any advice) before I do anything!

Cheers

The following articles on technet say, that AzMan is deprecated in Windows Server 2012

First article. What's new in Hyper-V. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831410.aspx

Second article. Things that are removed or deprecated in Windows Server 2012. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831568.aspx

Both articles refer to some mythycal new management tools. The question is: where do I get these tools and how should I manage access to the virtual machines now? Will appreciate any information about this topic.
