Official support for 100mbit networking?

$

I have a remote office or two with 100mbit only.  I could use a crossover cable to provide 1gb for live migration, but is 100mbit even officially supported?  I think I saw an official document somewhere saying 1 or 10gbit, but if I had solid documentation of it I might be able to acquire new switch hardware.

What do you think?  I tried 100mbit in the lab and it works OK.

Running 2012 DC on a 2008 R2 Hyper-V server

Is it a safe solution to run a virtualized 2012 server who’s only role is a Domain Controller on a 2008 R2 server running Hyper-V and two other logical partitions also running 2008 R2 ( one is File / Print, the other is a distribution point for SCCM )

I will also have two dedicated DCs running 2012 at my data center ( as well as multiple DC at my corporate parent site ) and these remote DCs will be supporting less the 40 users each and are in place to support the remote sites during WAN outage.

The other option with the licenses I have is to upgrade the Hyper-V Manager with 2012, building the new DC partition as 2012, and run the other two partitions as 2008 R2.   Can 2012 upgrade over the existing 2008 R2 server without clearing the logical partitions?

VM's going into a saved state

2 specific 2003 VMs running on Core Server 2008 R2 are periodically going to saved mode without an obvious cause in Event Viewer (no resource or backup activity noted in the Event Log). Any ideas of what it could be?

NO backups are occurring when it happens, frequency is about once a week.  No discernible pattern as to time.

High ping latency on Windows Server 2012 virtual machine on Hyper-v

Hello team,

I've been experienced an issue that is affected the performance of my environment. I have the following scenario:

1 - Server Dell R720

1 - SAN DELL MD3220i

1 - Switch Cisco 3750G

As the picture shows, I just have a switch, I'm pretty know that the recommended setting is with two switches, however I just have one of them. A personal of Cisco has configured this device with different vlan's so that means that the connection between the storage and the host works so nice.

The problem is the latency that the virtual machines are experiencing. I have Windows Server 2012 and I'm using Hyper-v to virtualize my virtual machines.

Does anyone know which parameters May I need to modify, enable or disable on Windows Server 2012 - Hyper V to work fine?

I would appreciate your help in this regard!

Thank you in advance!

Regards,

Paul Mendoza.

"BOOTMGR is missing" error when I use bootable VHD in Hyper-V manager.

I have Windows 2008 R2 RC x64 bit VHD that I created for native boot. Then I decided to use this VHD from Hyper-V manager.

I created new VM and added that bootable VHD as HDD.
But, when I try to start this VM in Hyper-V manager system can't boot, saying "BOOTMGR is missing" (but I still able to boot natively from this VHD)

Are there any workarounds for this?!
I have the same Windows 2008 R2 RC x64 as host and guest system with the same hardware.
How can I use VHD for native boot and via Hyper-V manager?!

Ubuntu 12.10 GPT partition >2TB not working

Hi!

Hyper-V on 2012.

I've got a Ubuntu, 12.10, server installation which i try to add some storage to. I've created 64GB harddrive (VHDX) as the 1st drive. And then a 2nd drive 4TB (VHDX). Thin.prov on both.

Creating and formating: Using gdisk, parted or gparted (livecd) on ubuntu I'm not able to partition, GPT, and initiate a filesystem on the the large VHDX.

Is there a problem with Hyper-V 2012 and drives (VHDX) >2TB when used by guests?

Edit: :) Typo in title... Ubunut...

Hi

I am planning to deploy Hyper-v Replica with SAN Storage as I need more disk space for the  Virtual Machines.

Can anybody share their thought the drawbacks and advantages of this deployment.

Anti-Virus on Hyper-V Standalone

I was wondering if there is any Microsoft recommendations for installing or not installing anti-virus software on Hyper-v Standalone. I have some people who are saying we should be installing it so I'm trying to find some Microsoft Documentation saying not to install a/v on hyper-v standalone.

VM hypervisors fail to work on Windows 8

I just bought a Asus CM6730, i7 (4 core with HyperThreading enabled) with Windows 8, and I enabled VT-x in the BIOS before installing both VMplayer and VirtualBox. When trying to create a VM both hypervisors get stuck at the same point in the boot process of the client. I have narrowed it down to the USB device enumeration. The guest OS gets stuck in the USB discovery:

Both VMplayer and VirtualBox behave the same way. Here is a log of VirtualBox:

00:00:29.239299 PIT: mode=2 count=0x4a9 (1193) - 1000.15 Hz (ch=0)
00:00:29.493314 PIT: mode=0 count=0x10000 (65536) - 18.20 Hz (ch=0)

00:01:29.894568 EHCI: USB Operational

...

The last lines are the result of my attaching and detaching a USB device to see if I could get the process going again.

Is there a special trick that needs to be completed before I can run hypervisors on Windows 8?

I was looking if I could do a similar experiment with Hyper-V but it does not appear in my Windows Features list, and I could not find the answer how to enable it.

Hyper-V - Host Loses Internet Acess with External Virtual Switch

$

Just moved to Win8 Pro, and looking into Hyper-V to fit my VM needs, specifically running a VM for Windows XP.

I only have a single, physical NIC in this machine (chipset-based Intel 82579V), and I've installed the latest available drivers for Win8.

I want the VM to have Internet access, so I created an external virtual switch, and because I only have the 1 NIC, I ensured I checked the "allow management operating system to share...." box.    I have unique VLAN IDs for the management OS (host) and within the VM itself.

Problem is that as soon as I create the external virtual switch, the host loses Internet connectivity.   (The VM doesn't have Internet access either.)    I must revert the virtual switch to "Private" or "Internal" and reset the NIC in order to regain connectivity.

I have tried assigning an IP manually, but no change.    Tried disabling TCP/IP offloading on the NIC, no change.   Reverted to older drivers, no change.

Any other ideas?

Shut down all Hosts without HA moving the VMs

Hello
We are going to perform maintenance on our entire Server-Blade system witch contains 5 Hyper-V hosts (win 2008R2 core) and 4 physical DB-servers. We are upgrading the Blade's NIC's to 10Gb.

To do this I will need to shut down all physical servers including the Hyper-V hosts but I do not want the vm's to perform the automatical HA move of wm's during this Maintenace.

So my questions are:
What is the best way to shut down all hosts without moving the vm's?
Can I put the HA in "Maintenace mode" or temporarily disable it?
Do I need to put the Hosts in Maintenace mode ?

Sleep and hibernation is working on Server 2012 with started hypervisor! I do not know why...

Hi,
I enabled Hyper-V role in the Microsoft Windows Server 2012 on testing computer (PC with i7 CPU and 16GB RAM). I found very strange behavior. The sleep mode was enabled and after command “powercfg /hibernation on” the hibernation is also working.

I tested sleep (S3) and hibernation with started hypervisor and with running virtual machine. I tested sleep and hibernation triggered by power button and even with time-out that was set in the Power Options (I set sleep after 1 minute and later hibernate after 1 minute and wait).

Sleep and hibernation is working! I do not understand why. Sleep and hibernation should be functional only on Client Hyper-V on Windows 8 and not on the Server 2012.

Some examples:
--------------------------------
Testing workstation (i7, 16GB RAM) with Server 2012 and with started hypervisor:
--------------------------------
C:\Users\Administrator>powercfg /a
The following sleep states are available on this system:
    Standby (S3)
    Hibernate
    Fast Startup

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
    Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

    Standby (Connected)

Hey folks,

I have been given the task of finding the physical machine of a zombie VM .The problem here is we have don't have any records of this zombie machine computer account in active directory .We can ping the zombie vm but can't connect . we don't know the physical machine of that zombie . we have around 1000 servers mixture of pyhsical and virtual  .we are using Hyper-v

Ask . how can we find the zombie vm's physical machine based on ip address

How do I download Hyper-V for windows 8

$

I have recently bought a HP Pavilion G6 laptop
for PC World with windows 8 pre-installed.<o:p></o:p>

I find that Hyper-V is not installed as part of
the suite and therefore I can't run a virtual machine.<o:p></o:p>

PC World have said they don't install all
windows features and to contact Microsoft direct.<o:p></o:p>

I have tried endlessly on line to find and
install hyper-V, but always end up with a version for W7 which will not
run in W8. This is even though it says it is for W8.<o:p></o:p>

I have spoken to Microsoft Support and was just
passed around the houses, I spoke to 7 different people and got no answers!!<o:p></o:p>

To be honest I am hacked off with the whole
issue as nobody at Microsoft will give me a straight answer to my problem!<o:p></o:p>

Question again: "Can I get and
install Hyper-V for Windows 8 or not"?
<o:p></o:p>

 <o:p></o:p>

Thank you.<o:p></o:p>

Windows 2012 Hyper-V Live migration Failed with An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host error.

I have a domain-registered clustered Windows 2012 Hyper-V server group with three servers.  They have a hardware based iSCSI connect to a shared LUNS.  After working perfectly for over six months, the Live migration suddenly stopped working yesterday with the following error:

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine VSVR-xxx' failed.
Virtual machine migration operation for 'VSVR-xxx' failed at migration source 'SVR-xx'. (Virtual machine ID xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx)
Planned virtual machine creation failed for virtual machine 'VSVR-FTP': An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. (0x80072746). (Virtual Machine ID xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx).
Failed to receive data for a Virtual Machine migration: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. (0x80072746).

The Quick Migration still works.  I have no idea what went wrong or what changed.  The servers and the cluster still seam to be registered with the domain controller.  Sense this is classified as a development server we don't take backups.  I would like to try to fix it before I go to the time to completely rebuild the cluster.

Does anyone have an idea what went wrong and how to fix the live migration?

VM Connection screen and hyper-v manager not in sync (black screen)

$

Hi,

First time poster, please be gentle...

I have a problem which is similar to the black screen issue, my presentation is a little different though. I find that the HV Manager seems to "get stuck". For example, I make a HV connection to a shutdown machine, see the "blank" screen as expected. If I then start the machine in HV manager, the machine starts OK and comes up in the VM Connection. But in HV manager, nothing seems to be happening, as if the machine has not started. However if I go into the settings on the guest when I know it's started (sometimes after a little clicking around as it seems stuck at "Help" on the right-click) HV Manager then seems to wake up and starts to display stats and the thumbnail screen.

I did start using RSAT on Win7 and that seemed much more reliable and this issue has been more noticeable since I moved to Windows8. I've also started moving some disks to VHDX. As an aside, I noticed that the first time machines are started in the Windows8 console, they seem very slow to start but I'm not sure if that's coincidental. After the first time startup, they seem OK.

If anyone can offer advice/information as to whether these are known behaviours/issues, I'd appreciate that.

Network Requirements & Real World Consolidation Ratios

$

Hi All,

Looking at creating a small 2~3 host Hyper-V environment for development which will be colo hosted and just wanting to check that the only requirement of the physical network for live migration/shared nothing functionality is that my VLAN is trunked (802.1q) between all the switches my hosts are physically connected to?

Also, I'm currently running MAPT across our fleet and would just like to get some feedback on real world consolidation ratios being achieved with Hyper-V. The hardware in our Hyper-V hosts will be as follows;

  • Single Intel Xeon E5-2620
  • 128GB 1600Mhz ECC DDR3
  • Intel 840 Pro based SSD (100k IOPS read & write)

Most of the VM's running in this environment will be low~medium web traffic with a a few Database Servers here and there. Any feedback on how many VM's (ball park figures) we should be able to achieve here? Currently it is being slated for up to 100 VM's per host, and I am wondering if this is overshooting it a bit.

Snapshot - Event ID 19542

Event ID 19542

Cannot take snapshot for 'xxxxxxxxxxxx' because one or more synthetic fibre channel controllers are attached. (Virtual machine ID xxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxx)

I get this error when trying to take a snapshot of a VM that does have a Virtual Fiber Connection to an HP SAN. The two VM's I am trying to snapshot are a SQL Cluster and I have using the virtual Fiber connection to present the cluster drives. Is there something special I have to do in Hyper-V 3.0 to get it to take a snapshot of virtual machines with Virtual Fiber Connections? I cannot find any details on this.

Thanks,

John

Change Hyper-V Server 2008 Administrator password

$

Hi! I have a machine with Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 running. I put the Administrator password when I installed the system, but now... How can I change it?

I access the Hyper-V machine through Remote Desktop, and I can't see any option to change the Administrator password in the auto launched menu, only a option to add local admin accounts. The machine is not in a Domain.

Can I do from command line?

I also tried to using mmc from my computer, and selecting "connect to other server", but it gives me a error like "winrm client cannot process the request"

Thanks
