Cannot remote to VM's from host

$

I have a simple lab set up on a test machine.

Lab consists of 3 machines, one Domain controller (dhcp, active directory etc) and some regular computers, all VM's.

Im trying to remote desktop to these VM's from the host OS via MSTSC but its not working.

I set up a virtual switch called "Lab", and a domain called "lab.domain on the DC, and all the VM's can communicate via this. the virtual switch is currently "internal" but i have tried "external" with no success.

On each VM Remote desktop is allowed, network discovery is enabled and firewall is disabled.

The host is not on the same domain as the VM's. i didnt think this should make any difference.

Does anyone have any idea why i cannot use MSTSC to connect to my VM's from my host?

create a team of virtual machines in hyper v

hi everyone,

in vmware workstation, we have the possibility of creating teams that group virtual machines. I think that is a very useful feature when we want to try different scenarios. I am planning to have an exchange and sharepoint lab but this time I am using hyper v in windows 8. But I can't see the feature of having teams. Can anyone advise on that?

custom resolution in hyper-v guest

Hello i see 1600x1200 is the max resolution supported in guest.
This is ok, since I need lower than that, but I need 1600x900 and all options seem to be missing.
Is there a way to use my custom resolution? I know rdp will do it but on a security policy here  I cannot use rdp on that machine...
Any help would be appreciated thank you.

exporting a vm from Windows Server 2008 R2 and importing it in Hyper V Server 2012

Hi Guys,

I have created a VM on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. I have even installed the OS and application as well. Now I found myself to export that VM on another server. So I have exported the VM to a folder on an external hard disk. On the new server, I have installed Hyper V Server 2012. Now I have to import that VM on that server. I have a raid 5 logical volume where I have copied the VM and its contents. To copy this VM, I had to use the command line.

First question, To manage the file system on Hyper V server 2012, is there any GUI tool for that? that is to create folder or assign permission and such.

Then to remotely manage Hyper V server 2012, I am using RSAT on windows 8. I can connect successfully to the Hyper V Server 2012. Now I am trying to import the virtual machine using the import wizard. The wizard is telling me that There is no virtual machines found.

What should i do?

please advise.

Здравствуйте!

Купили W2012, как настроить com порт физической машины на виртуальную?

В настройках виртуальной надо лишь указать название именнованного канала.

А как его определить на физической машине? Есть подробная инструкция?

Dynamic Memory Hyper - V 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 Not Working

Hello,

I working with approxmiatly 10 VM on my Hyper-V server running under 2008 r2 Enterprise SP1.

I have a Win8 VM that is able to utilize the dynamic memory with no extra setup.

I have a 2008 R2 Enterprise Sp1 that utilizes Dynamic Memory. (Don't understand why only this one works)

Then I have 10 other VMs that all have 2008 r2 Enterprise SP1 and NONE of them will utilize Dynamic Memory. They are all set at a flat memory.

I have dropped the minimum memory to 256mb and ran multiple RAM heavy applications and never see the dynamic memory kick in.

I have fully updated the Hyper-V Host and Guest OSs. I have tried to reinstall Intergratrion Services multiple times on multiple VMs.

I have created fresh installs of the 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 and still no results.

If anyone could help shed some light on the subject it would be greatly appreciated.

VM Virtual Nics Resetting when RDP connection established

Strange issue here:

Dell PE R510 servers running 2008 R2 w/ Hyper-V

2008 R2 Guest Vm's

While investigating complaints of dropped SQL connections, I discovered that our VM's are logging the following:

Source: netsvc
EventID: 4

"The miniport 'Microsoft Virtual Bus Network Adapter' reset."

The strange thing is, this quite often happens right after an RDP session is established to the server by myself or another admin. It doesn't appear to happen 100% of the time,  and also occurs without RDP session.

My first though was NIC drivers, but further investigation shows this is happening on multiple servers (different hyper-v hosts even) on both Broadcom and Intel Nics. I've since upgraded them to latest drivers anyways without any change.

I know this error was an issue in the past, with vm's under heavy load, but this isn't the case here. This is happening on servers nearly idle.

Looking through the logs, it appears to have been happening for approx.. 2 months. It's just gone unnoticed, since it's only a couple of times a day, and the event log entry is an "informational" event rather than a "warning" or "error" that would have been noticed.

Anyone have any suggestion on what's going on here?

Help understanding hotfixes

$

I'm posting in this forum because i happen to be working on a Fail over Hyper V cluster, but in reality it's a general Microsoft question.  It's been brought to my attention, that hotfixes are built against the latest build of a DLL.   So in trying to find out the necessary hot fix list for my base lined server I've got the following question.

So for example:  Let's say hot-fix 1 fixes problem A.  Hot-fix 1 then becomes the latest build. Then when Microsoft releases Hot-fix 2 for problem B, this hot-fix 2 would also include hot-fix 1 for problem A.  And, this just continues through out the duration of the production updates.  So, as i understand it, I should be comparing release dates of the individual .DLL and .EXE files to determine if i need to update for a system.

Can someone from Microsoft verify this?

Hyper-v and very slow network

$

Dear all,

I have a big problem with my hyper-v server and network card. I've found a lot of topic around this question but none of them helped me.

I have a Win 2008 R2 Server with only Hyper-V installed. I have 3 NIC , one is reserved to the host management and the others two are reserved for virtual machine .

All NIC are Intel, one is integrated on the Intel motherboard and the others are Intel Gigabit ET Dual port .

Before installing the role of Hyper-V all NIC worked perfectly with speed around 1Gb (file transfer average 90 MB/Sec, of course I have a Gigabit LAN) .

After Hyper-V install, the host system  is going very slow and the network file transfer using the dedicated NIC is about ten time slower (9-10MB /sec) . Same problem with all VM off and also if I remove all VM !

I tried all of suggestion found in old post (disabling TCP checksum / offload ...) but nothing happens.

What is really strange is that by removing all network card all the Host operating system seems to improve the speed... but, of course, I can't use  my LAN :(

I need help because every night I must make a full backup of Virtual hard disk from the host to a backup server in my lan.

My configuration:

- Server Win 2008 R2 SP1 with Hyper-V and no others role

- 2 Virtual Machine (one Win 2008 R2 and one Win 7 Ultimate)

- NAS Linux (access via SMB with no problem)

- Various Windows 7 Pro client

Thanks in advance to everybody,

Luca M.

Help understanding 2012 Hyper-V networking

Hi All

I have been asked to design a 3 node Hyper-V 2012 cluster using 3 DL380G7's connecting to HP lefthand P4500 storage.

I have 8 x 1GB NIC's in each server, I will dedicate 2 NICs from each server to iSCSI.

I am unsure of how to best use the remaining 6 NIC's.

I was planning to use

2 for mgmt OS

2 for Cluster / LM

2 for VM's

I keep reading about the converged networking capability's of 2012 but not sure how to use them or if they would be of benefit.

Can anyone help me on this or point me to any articles that have a good step by step guide

Many Thanks

Nick

MPIO using SAS

Hi.

We currently have a 2 host (Server 2008 R2 Core) Hyper-V environment. Both hosts are connected to an HP P2000 series SAN using SAS cables and HBA.

However when all connected up on the SAN i can see all for connectors showing as 4 hosts (or 4 ID's)

I have run the MPIO commands and restarted the servers but should the SAN be seeing them as 4 different hosts knowing that the connections 2 connections come from a single physical host.

Does this sound correct for SAS, as i dont remember it being like this when i used iSCSI in the past.

thanks

Windows 2012 Essentials and Hyper V Clusters

I have what is probably a stupid question but I'll ask it anyway.  Can WS 2012 Essentials, running as a VM on Hyper-V Server, along with WS 2012 Standard as a VM on the same server, be used in a fail-over cluster?  Thanks.

I have Successfully deployed hyper v 2012 server on my server. And i am able to manage it in Hyper-V Manager in my windows 8 Desktop.

My question is during hyper-v installation i created a partition of 50gb on the server hardisk and installed hyper-v over it keeping the remaining size of hard disk unallocated.

As diskmgmt.msc is not available in the hyper -v server. Could anyone help me to utilize my remaining unallocated hardisk space.

Anyone please help me.

Thanks in advance.

NEtBios over TCP gets disabled when adding NICs to Virtual Switch - Server Core

Server core Dell 2950 with two Dual Port Intel 1000 PT NICs and two onboard BRoadcom NICS.  When I create the Virtual Switches and add physical NICS to them NETBIOS over TCP becomes disabled.  I have tried to enable using registry located here HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters\Interfaces and changing the value of NetBiosOptions for each adapter from 0 to 2, but it does not seem to work.

Anyone else have any ideas?

RDP into Hyper-V VMs with domain account incredibly slow - local account just fine

$

Server 2012 Hyper-V 2 node cluster with latest patches. If I take a VM with a fresh install of Server 2012, I can RDP (or console) with a local account into it within a couple seconds (as is to be expected). If I use a domain account, it takes close to a minute. This is true for all the VMs on both nodes. It used to work just fine with domain accounts - not sure what happened. I did apply updates recently, so perhaps it's related to that. I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this, either. No particular step seems to take all that long, but every step takes way longer than it should, which adds up.

Any ideas?

Exporting Hyper-V Configuration

$

Is it possible to export the configuration of Hyper-V, not the VMs, but the actual Hyper-V installation.

For example VMware has the VM-support tool which creates a series of text and configuration files based on the ESX instance.  It holds network, disk,  VM and other important information.

Does Hyper-V have a similar kind of tool?

Many thanks.
