Hello All!
I realize there is a ton of other discussions on very similar issues but I've tried all the various suggestions with no success and I think this problem is unique (but probably applicable to many other people experiencing similar errors).
Environment:
Machine A: Client for remote management - running Server 2012
Machine B: Hyper-V Server 2012
- No domain - workgroup mode
- Firewall is disabled on both for troubleshooting purposes
- Setup the same Administrator user/password on both machines as well as another identical Admin user to test with
- allowed Anonymous Remote Access in DCOMCNFG
- hosts files are edited to add server/client host names
- set VDS service to start / automatic start
Problem:
When installing Machine B (Hyper-V Server) with client Machine A directly plugged into the same LAN and a static IP on the same subnet, all remote management works fine. I am able to use Hyper-V Manager fully as well as Server Manager, Computer Manager, Powershell
Remoting all successfully.
When I move Machine A (client) to a remote ISP and connected to our colo facility via VPN (has an IP on another subnet), and connect to the server in Hyper-V Manager, I get error "RPC server unavailable. Unable to establish communication between 'server'
and 'client'." Note that I can edit Hyper-V Settings, Edit and Inspect Disks, etc. all from within Hyper-V Manager and all other types of management work (Server Manager, Computer Manager, mmc, Powershell Remoting) with the exception of connecting to
the Disk Management service in Computer Manager which also throws an "RPC server unavailable" error.
The VPN is a hardware-based IPSEC tunnel from a Trendnet Router ISP-side (Machine A) to a Cisco Pix firewall colo-side (Machine B). There are no Pix rules restricting the data flow regarding the VPN tunnel.
I can ping in both directions successfully, and a tracert completes with a single hop both ways.
I noticed a Firewall rule for Windows Remote Management (HTTP-in) on public profile was restricted to local subnet only, so I added my VPN subnet as well. But this should not affect my outcome as all firewalls are disabled.
So, it seems this is directly related to being on a different subnet as everything works when on the same subnet. Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and have a great weekend!
Cheers, Rich
