P2V Migration of a Windows 2008 R2 Server

Hi,

I hope I am asking this question on the right forum...

I want to P2V a Windows 2008 R2 OEM server to Hyper-V but I am concerned about the fact that it has a OEM license installed (serial number would most likely fail, right?).

I have purchased Open Licenses of Windows Server and I was wondering if I just can go ahead and change the serial number of my server to an Open License before starting the P2V procedure. Will the change of serial number work since this server was installed using an OEM disk?

One thing is sure, if I had to do it again, I would never buy OEM licenses anymore.

Thanks in advance.

Windows 8 - Hyper-V Guest networking issue at boot...

$

Every time I boot my Windows 7 Hyper-V guest I have no networking connection. The only thing I can do to get a networking connection is to switch the virtual switch to use another physical driver and then switch it back.  This causes a spike in the CPU of the guest, after which I have networking access again.  Does anyone have any thoughts?

I am trying to perform a reverse replication after an unplanned failover in a lab environment. I receive the following two errors:

Event ID 32086

Hyper-V suspended replication for virtual machine 'hsral-test-svr1' due to a non-recoverable failure. (Virtual Machine ID 7A21E1DB-2365-4424-B5F0-8B0BFACDFF83). Resume replication after correcting the failure.

Event ID 32022

Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'hsral-test-svr1': One or more arguments are invalid (0x80070057). (Virtual Machine ID 7A21E1DB-2365-4424-B5F0-8B0BFACDFF83)

The replication fails at 88% everytime. I can resume replication and it completes. But I am not sure how to start troubleshooting why the failure occurs.

Thanks for the help

Hyper-v stopped working after dell Bios Upgrade

$

I had installed hyper-v on Win8 on my Dell XPS One 2710 After I did a Bios upgrade (A9=>A10) I'm told that my VM won't start because the Hyper-V service is running. But the service is indeed running. What gives? I worked fine under the previous BIOS.

The only change was that I added a virtual LAN after the BIOS upgrade but before I had tried running the VM. I remove the VLAN just in case but it didn't solve the problem. Otherwise nothing significant changed as far as I know.

FYI: In http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/780cdcb6-2a3c-4d1c-8d88-3fca691a138a a similar problem was resolved by upgrading the BIOS. Here I have the opposite problem -- broken by upgrading the BIOS. Since this is a different model Dell I decided to start a separate thread because the problems seem to be associated with specific hardware/BIOS configurations. Perhaps not many are using W8?Hyper-V on this particular machine so the problems have not been shaken out.

Joining Hyper-V 2012 Servers to a Virtualized Domain Controller

$

I am in the process of setting up two new Hyper-V Server 2012 hosts, the plan is to use one to host 4 server guest operating systems and to use the other for replication. I plan on installing a domain controller as one of the Hyper-V Guests and my question is whether or not it is safe to join the Hyper-V Server hosts to the domain when the domain controller is running as a guest on the Hyper-V Server itself.

From what I can gather administration of the Hyper-V Servers will be much easier if they are joined to the domain, however I am not sure if this will work since the domain controller would obviously be unavailable to the Hyper-V Host at start-up.

I know that best practice would be to have another physical domain controller for the network, and in the long run that is my goal, however the hardware I would like to use for that is a production server running ESXi now, once my migration to Hyper-V is complete I will be able to repurpose that server, but that may be some months down the road.

Would the best practice be to join the Hyper-V hosts to the domain or leave them in a Workgroup?

Thanks in advance.

Hpyer-V guest NIC Teaming with legacy and VMBus NICs mixed

I tried NIC teaming (Guest/VM teaming) several times combining Hyper-V network cards(VMBus NICs) and legacy network cards (emulated NICs).

Everytime I try it, NIC teaming does not work with the legacy NIC. It does not matter if I dedicate it as a "standby" nic or spread the load. You may ask, why I try this: simply to demo the fact that NIC teaming should work vendor independent.

My question is: should this configuration work? If not: is this documented?

Hyper-V 2008R2 live migration stuck

I have a 4 node cluster. Live migration is working except for one host. Live migration of a vm from host a,b, or c to d is stuck at 10%. A live migration from host d to a, b or c is working normal. Quick migration is also working between all hosts. What can be wrong?

Hyper-V live migration failed with error 0x8009030E

I have three servers.

Server A - Windows 2012 data center with Hyper-V role
Server B - Hyper-V 2012 server
Server C - Windows 2012 data center as SMB server

All servers are in the same domain that is a Windows 2003 domain controller. Both server A and B are configured for delegation to each other following the instructions from step by step as this pagehttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134199.aspx (Configure and Use Live Migration on Non-clustered Virtual Machines). My account is a member of domain admins and is also added into the local administators groups on the both servers.

When I tried to move a virtual machine from server A to server B, I got the following error.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Virtual machine migration operation failed at migration source.

Failed to establish a connection with host 'serverB': No credentials are available in the security package (0x8009030E).

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to authenticate the connection for a Virtual Machine migration at the source host: no suitable credentials available. Make sure the operation is initiated on the source host of the migration, or the source host is configured to use Kerberos for the authentication of migration connections and Constrained Delegation is enabled for the host in Active Directory.

[Expanded Information]

Any advice is appreciated.

manually merge a snapshot

Yes, I've read the posts about manually merging but there is no "merge" choice available. I'm running 2008R2 and have a machine that I tried to migrate P2V using SCVMM. The migration failed after the VHD's had been copied over to the host.

I can start and run the machine by using the .AVHD file as the first disk, then the "C" drive .VHD as the second disk. NOTE: There are no "snapshot" files available to work with.

I need to merge the .AVHD file into the .VHD file manually and have tried using the info in existing posts, but I only get the choices to "compact, convert, or expand" - there is no "merge" option.

I'm attempting to use Windows Server Backup to create a bare metal backup and I'll then restore it into a new VHD to see if that works. Update: tried that and no joy.

Hopefully someone is able to come up with information on a way to perfomr a true "manual" merge of an .AVHD and a .VHD though.

Windows 7 and Hyper-V 2012

Hello,

I turned off firewall from both my client (windows 7) and server (hyper-v 2012). I can access the Hyper-V manager and it says "No Virutal Machine was Found". So I went NEW > Virtual Machine and created a new Virtual Machine. While it was creating the Hard Drive. It says

"The Server encountered and error while configuring hard disk on test" (I called it test to test it out)

"RPC server is unavailable. Unable to establish communication between 'server' and 'client'."

I am new to windows Hyper-V so please bear with me. I already added a new user using: http://blogs.technet.com/b/jhoward/archive/2008/11/14/configure-hyper-v-remote-management-in-seconds.aspx

Any documentation about Microsoft recomendation for virtual memory and virtual CPU for virtual machines

Hey,

I'm looking for official Microsoft document for their recommendation for virtual memory and virtual CPU per virtual machine OS.

When you create a new Virtual Machine in VMware world they have their own recommendation when you pick the OS.

Thank you,

NLB with multiple Hyper-V hosts

$

I am having difficulty getting NLB to work with virtual machines that reside on different Hyper-V hosts. The scenario (all physical/virtual machines are running Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise) is a set of virtual machines hosting a web site using IIS:

Host1 : 10.10.3.11, 10.10.3.12

VM1: 10.10.3.41 (static), 10.10.3.71 (dhcp)

VM3: 10.10.3.43 (static), 10.10.3.73 (dhcp)

Host2: 10.10.3.13, 10.10.3.14

VM2: 10.10.3.42 (static), 10.10.3.72 (dhcp)

VM4: 10.10.3.44 (static), 10.10.3.74 (dhcp)

Cluster IP: 10.10.3.40 Hostname: CS1

Gateway: 10.10.3.1

When clustering, the first IP of the VM (a static address) is used. Clustering VM1 and VM3 together using NLB works, as well as clustering VM2 and VM4. Clustering VM1 and VM2 does not work. After creating and adding the hosts to the cluster, the Network Load Balancing Manager will initially show that both VM1 and VM2 are within the cluster CS1 and are converged. Closing the manager and re-opening it on VM1 will only show VM1 as part of the cluster, and the same for VM2 (the manager will only show VM2 as part of the cluster when running the manager on VM2). Browsing to CS1 will fail, but browsing to each host directly works. This occurs when the cluster operation mode is set to either unicast or multicast.

Are there special steps to get virtual machines across Hyper-V hosts to work properly with NLB?

All network adapters configured with a static IP address have MAC address spoofing enabled. Changing the adapters to legacy adapters results in the same behavior.

Time synchronisation on Hyper-V for stand-alone servers

$

What is the correct time server configuration for virtual machines on Hyper-V that are...

  1. domain member servers
  2. stand alone member servers
  3. PDC role holder

I found that you should never disable "Integrated Time Synchronisation" with Hyper-V virtual machines, except if it is a virtual domain controller. This post explains how to configure it for domain members: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/d37aa3b0-3cf8-4061-acf1-9c9082115e3b

But how to do it for virtual servers that are not member of a domain? I also noticed that they still have the "Internet Time Synchronisation" tab active, while it is removed for domain members. In my specific case I want to configure a stand alone server in the DMZ to synchronize it's time with the domain controller in the trusted zone, rather then go to the internet to synchronize. Is leaving "Integrated Time Synchronisation" enabled + executing this procedure (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816042/en-us) the correct way? But this leaves the "Internet Time" tab untouched.

Many thanks

High Availability with Hyper-V Network Virtualization Gateway

$

Hello,

I am considering building a hybrid cloud model for an IaaS offering.  One of the issues I have not yet resolved is how to provide a high availability solution for the Hyper-V Network Virtualization Gateway devices.

It appears the release of dedicated devices have been slow to come to market (I am aware F5 and other have announced devices, but none have arrived to the market as of yet) and the integration of NVGRE into existing network equipment has not happened.  As such, I am looking at using server hardware and Windows Server 2012 to act as my network virtualization gateway.

Having said that, I have found almost no information on how I can use Windows Server 2012 to put together a redundant and highly available solution.  It was briefly touched upon in this article:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj618319.aspx

Multiple Gateways

High Availability by using multiple physical Hyper-V Network Virtualization gateways is outside the scope of this article. The datacenter orchestrator (for example VMM) will need to configure and manage the gateway. Scenarios in which the datacenter deploys multiple gateways include scalability and resiliency. For scalability a single physical gateway may not be able to handle the load required for a datacenter. Additionally a single gateway introduces a single point of failure. The partner’s management console should handle deployments consisting of multiple gateways.

And that basically says that it is outside the scope of the article.  So the question is:  can multiple Windows Server 2012 servers be configured to act as a network virtualization gateway?   If so, would all clients be multi-honed for the two gateways, or is there some way of clustering them (using existing technologies) to provide a single address to act as a gateway?  How would these gateways be managed/replicated?  Does SC VMM SP1 have the ability to manage multiple network virtualization gateways?

Thank you.

2012 server shutting down automatically in Hyper-v

Hello,

I have below configuration in my LAB environment.

Host OS: Widnows 2008r2 Standered

In Hyper-V

Guest OS - Windows 2012 server (standered edition) as a DC. I have 3 clients in my domain all of them are windows 2008r2 standered only.

Symptom: My DC, that is 2012 server is shutting down automatically after X minutes. I never observed after how many minutes it is. Because as long as i am working on it, it is just fine. But when i started working on other things after around 30 minutes (never observed exactly after how many minutes) it is shutting down.

Please note that my clients (2008 servers) are never behaving in such a way.

I have observed event log....nothing found suspicious in that. Any how i will go keen into them, mean while seeking for any suggestions.

Thanks,

Vishnu.

Nested Hyper-V 2012 Server host with 2008R2 guest = DHCP but no internet

I've got a Hyper-V Server 2012 running on a ESXi 5.1 hypervisor. In the Hyper-V server I have installed a server 2008 R2 OS. The OS is working fine except for the fact that it isn't getting internet access. It get's an IP from my DHCP server (a VM on my ESXi host) and I can release/renew it but I can't ping the gateway (or anything else for that matter). I have internet access on the Hyper-V server, just not on the Hyper-V guest.

Any ideas?

TIA!

Edit - My ESXi box is connected with 1 NIC

VM Virtual Nics Resetting when RDP connection established

$

Strange issue here:

Dell PE R510 servers running 2008 R2 w/ Hyper-V

2008 R2 Guest Vm's

While investigating complaints of dropped SQL connections, I discovered that our VM's are logging the following:

Source: netsvc
EventID: 4

"The miniport 'Microsoft Virtual Bus Network Adapter' reset."

The strange thing is, this quite often happens right after an RDP session is established to the server by myself or another admin. It doesn't appear to happen 100% of the time,  and also occurs without RDP session.

My first though was NIC drivers, but further investigation shows this is happening on multiple servers (different hyper-v hosts even) on both Broadcom and Intel Nics. I've since upgraded them to latest drivers anyways without any change.

I know this error was an issue in the past, with vm's under heavy load, but this isn't the case here. This is happening on servers nearly idle.

Looking through the logs, it appears to have been happening for approx.. 2 months. It's just gone unnoticed, since it's only a couple of times a day, and the event log entry is an "informational" event rather than a "warning" or "error" that would have been noticed.

Anyone have any suggestion on what's going on here?

How to set up A test network in SBS 2011

I am trying to set up a test network, we are currently running SBS 2011. I have set up another server running Server 2012, added hyper V. I want to set up a virtual network with Server 2012 Essentials with a workstation or two.  I have a extra router and the test server has two nics.  Are there any white papers on how to set this up.  I think the Server 2012 needs to have a static ip, as does the router.  Our SBS 2011 has an ip of 192.168.16.xxx  DHCP is enabled. Where do I go from here.
