Hyper-V VSS issues + VMs with inconsistent state

Hi,

Our setup is running on a physical Windows Server 2012R2 with Hyper-V role installed. The physical server is not domain joined. On top of this physical server we have 2 VMs; 1 is a domain controller and 1 is a file and app server. Both are running Windows Server 2012R2.

We have noticed an error on Azure Backup Agent on both VMs, stating that the VSS service needs to be restarted. The service was restarted successfully, however the Azure Backup Agent backup was still failing. One of the recommendations was to reboot the machine completely, so a Checkpoint (thank god) was taken before rebooting the VMs. Both VM displayed an error that an issue has been encountered and windows could not start. I could not manage to repair the VMs and successfully boot the VMs from this state, so I reverted to the checkpoint taken. When checking the event viewer, I noticed a lot of VSS errors on each machine with event ID 12289 - "Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error DeviceIoControl..".

When opening the physical server's event viewer, I noticed that there were critical events on the Hyper-V-Worker with event ID 18590 - 'VM' has encountered a fatal error.  The guest operating system reported that it failed with the following error codes: ErrorCode0: 0x7B, ErrorCode1: 0x341E4790, ErrorCode2: 0xC0000034, ErrorCode3: 0x0, ErrorCode4: 0x0.  If the problem persists, contact Product Support for the guest operating system.  (Virtual machine ID F5A41413-344B-4080-8F29-CB5A36DE8DFC).

I'm stuck since I cannot do a simple reboot on these VMs. Any help of how to troubleshoot and solve these issues?

Thanks in advance
