Hyperv Nic Issue

$

Hi Hope someone can assist

I have copied a VM servers data drives  from  a backup of a DELL hyperv server to a different Hyperv server of the same spec,

I have re created the server and attached the drives, when I boot up the server ( server 2016) it loads ok and lets me log in BUT

the Virtual nic adapter has a red cross, when I go look at it, it is missing ip4 and ip6 protocols, if I try add them I get the error "could not add the requested feature, the error is: cannot create file when file already exists"

I have removed all old network devices from device manager and also tried recreating the network on the HyperV Host

I have a second also copied server running on this backup server ( server2012r2) attached to the same virtual network and this is ok.

any ideas what would cause this

thanks in advance

Rob

HyperV guest Nic issue

Hi

I have copied from backup the disk images of a server 2016 which was running on a HyperV (2016) server and re created the server on a new server ( same spec, make and model), I have used server 2016 again and created with the same named virtual switch

when i boot up the VM the server loads ok and lets me log in BUT the network card has no IP4 or IP6 protocols. If i try add them it says that the feature cannot be added as the file cannot be created as the file already exists.

I have tried deleting the network card and rebooting

I have tried showing disabled adaptors in device manager and removed them

any ideas what to do next.

I restored another server (2012r2 the same way on the same new server and this works perfectly so I dont think its the Virtual switch thats at fault,

any advice would be great

Thanks

Issue trying to create Windows 10 virtual machine

Hi people,

I need to create a Windows 10 virtual machine on Windows Server 2012 r2, but not being able to probably because:

"hyper-v cannot be installed: a hypervisor is already running" site:https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-us/home?category=windowsserver

That appears when trying to enable Hyper-v

I also tried installing Virtual Box, but only offers to create Windows 10 32bit vms.

What steps could be taken to create the W10 vm, given this issues?

Thanks!

Adding a Fiber Adapter to Existing Hyper-V Host server

$

I have an active MS Datacenter server which presently has 8 Hyper-V Windows 2019 virtual machines. All are up and functional and without issue.

I've installed a Fiber network adapter. Its drivers are loaded and the intel management software see's the adapter and it tests at 10G, as it should.

My logic is escaping me as I approach assigning this adapter. As each virtual machine has a Network Adapter with an assigned IP and another virtual switch to negotiate the connection with the outside world, I'm wondering what role the new 10G adapter should be taking.

Naturally I want the 10G to handle network traffic. Do I assign the 10G as the host machine's adapter? Or does the 10G adapter need to be the virtual switch on each of the virtual machines? Or am I deficient 1 10G port - one for an interface with the network and one for communication between each Virtual machines dedicated IP adapter and it virtual switch to communicate with the outside world?

The more I think on this the more uncertain I find myself.  With the addition of one 10G network Intel adapter into a server running MS datacenter with active virtual servers, where do I apply the 10G network adapter so its throughput capacity is used by of the virtual machines?

Intel I350 SR-IOV Suddenly Stopped Working While Hyper-V Still Not Reporting as Network as Degraded

After working for almost a year without issues, SR-IOV functionality suddenly quit working. The NIC is an Intel I350-T4 and the OS is Windows Server 2012 R2.

Looking at the event logs in the parent, here's an example of the message indicating failure:

I've looked at John Howard's detailed, "Everything you wanted to know about SR-IOV in Hyper-V" series and followed the steps in part 8 (http://blogs.technet.com/b/jhoward/archive/2012/03/21/everything-you-wanted-to-know-about-sr-iov-in-hyper-v-part-8.aspx) to see if that would lead me to the resolution. Unfortunately, most of the error conditions that he mentions are paired with a 'Degraded' status and status messages with suggested reasons.

Unfortunately, the network connections in my case are listed as 'OK', and so I'm not sure where to go next to find out what changed and why SR-IOV is enabled on the NIC, virtual switch, and virtual NIC... and yet still not functional and not reporting as degraded.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hyper-V client network has problems every time the host restarts

The specific performance is that connecting to the default switch network will be restored, and connecting to the new switch will lose the network connection, but at this time, using the Ping tool to Ping the gateway of the new switch will find that the gateway is unobstructed, because the new switch does not assign IP to the virtual machine system, while the default switch assigns it an IP which is not in the same network segment as the new switch, but the default switch is not connected to the virtual machine system. By the way, I use NAT networking.

Ubuntu 18.04.3 doesn't boot after expanding disk space in Hyper-V

I ran into a problem with my disk space after I increased my swap size. I had 30GB disk space allocated to Ubuntu and I increased my swap size to 8GB which depleted all remaining disk space. After that I tried to increase my disk space from 30 to 50GB. I've done this before from 10GB to 20GB and then 20GB to 30GB and I didn't have an issue. Now when I've done it from 50 I get these errors on boot from Ubuntu:

Hyper V : The Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service encountered an unexpected error: Unspecified error (0x80004005).

I installed Hyper V a few months back and setup some VMs, now I've cleared everything off and I'm trying to start again.

I've disabled Hyper V and reenabled it, I can't find how to remove it completely.

The Hyper V host service states with the error
The Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service encountered an unexpected error: Unspecified error (0x80004005).

When I try to create a NEW machine I get an error trying to access the network switches.  When I try look at the network switches I get a Generic Failure.

Does anyone know how to completely remove it so I can start again or how to fix the above.

Theory question on HV performance counters

Hello!

As you know there are Hyper-V HypervisorLogical Processor, Hyper-V HypervisorVirual Processor and Hyper-V HypervisorRoot Virtual Processor performance counter sets in Performance Monitor. Each of them has the %Guest Time, %Hypervisor Time and %Total Run Time counters:

I can't understand the following: for the physical proccesor(s) the counter %Guest Run Time defines how much of the physical core's processing power is used for running virtual machines, but what does this counter mean in the context of the VM itself? If there's no nested Hyper-V inside a VM then theoretically should NOT be any "guests" inside a VM...?

The same question applies to the Hypervisor Run Time counters.

Thank you in advance,
Michael

Hyper-V 2019 Slow Network Performance compared to 2012 R2

We run a combination of 2012 R2 and 2019 servers in separate clusters. We are experiencing a frustrating issue with our 2019 Hyper-V Servers. VM to VM network speeds are inferior on the 2019 hosts compared to identical VMs on the 2012 R2 Servers (around 1/3 of the speed)

We approached Microsoft and they suggested that they could see a number of network errors on the external NICs, so I approached the vendor (Dell). They suggested a couple of firmware updates to the NICs and the FC cards, which we performed. They also suggested a downgrade of the Intel NIC drivers – I had already tried the ones from the Intel site to see if this improved matters.

When this didn’t fix the issue Dell then wanted to go down the route of replacing hardware, which I resisted since we were having the same performance issues on all 6 hosts & it simply isn’t possible that all the hosts have the same hardware fault.

I then decided to create a Private VSwitch on one of the 2019 hosts. I connected my test VMs to this switch and experienced the same poor network speeds, which leads me to believe that the issue is unrelated to the NIC hardware or drivers, but the issue lies more fundamentally with how 2019 handles VSwitch traffic compared to 2012 R2

I have tried a number of "Fixes" suggested online, such as disabling VMQ and RSC, but these made no difference.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

We have a brand new Server 2019 Hyper-V host that was added into an existing 2016 Cluster. (Yes we are in process of replacing all these hosts with 2019)

When an admin logs onto the new host, it generates these warnings for each VM.
