Hi everyone,

I want to run to run Ubuntu in Fullscreen prefarebly in a different resolution as Win10 in fullscreen, utilizing the full screen.

And I would Like to switch between the OSs by using Win-key+ctrl+arrow or another keyboard shortcut.

Is this possible?

Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V Failover Cluster Intermittent VM Connectivity - VMQ disabled

$

Hello!

I have a new Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V Failover Cluster where some of the VM's have periodic connectivity loss.  I can ping them fine from the Hyper-V host server where they are running, but get intermittent pings from other hosts on the network.

I have a pair of HPE 10/25Gbe 631SFP28 NIC's teamed (Switch Independent) with the Hyper-V Virtual Switch built on that Team.  I believe that I have the latest Windows Drivers (Broadcom 10/23/2018 214.0.177.0).  I installed the latest HPE firmware for these Adapters.

VMQ is disabled on the Teamed Adapter and two 10/25GB NIC Adapters on both hosts.

The hosts are up-to-date with Windows Updates.

Yet I can get 50% packet loss with a simple ping to these VM's.  From some hosts, I can't get any pings to work at all.  Yet the correct MAC address shows up in "arp -a".

There is no routing and no VLAN's between the Hyper-V Hosts, VM's, and PC's.

Some VM's appear to have rock solid connectivity, while other (it seems like newly created VM's?) have the connectivity loss.  I can live migrate the VM's between hosts and still have ping loss.  I admit that the "newly created VM's" idea seems strange, but that's what it seems like.  The VM's are using the Hyper-V Synthetic NIC and running patched Windows Server 2019.

Any ideas on what I can try?  I would certainly appreciate any help that anyone can offer!

Hi All,

I have a  windows 10 VM with enough memoy and cores(32 GB and 8 cores) in which i am trying import another cent OS VM using Hyper-V .  The VM brought up properly and without any issues. The problem is the imported VM(cent OS) is getting rebooted automatically for every 30 min.

I have verified the System Event logs and it shows the following but i am clueless what reason its getting restarted.

Could you please help me out it in solving this issue. I am getting this message when the VM restarts.

Remove Hyper-V from Server 2019

$

I am setting up a MS Serer 2019 for Remote Desktop Services.  The Hyper-V feature was also install.  I am getting errors with RDS when trying to connect remotely.  From reading other MS Forums, multiple posts state that I need to remove the Hyper-V feature to allow RDS to work correctly.

I have tried to remove the Hyper-V feature using the Server Manger GUI as well as using PS as admin (Remove-WindowsFeature Hyper-V).  I have stopped all Hyper-V services before uninstalling, all fail.  During the reboot, the server will start removing software and then fail, roll back and when I log in, Hyper-V is still installed.

Thank you in advance.

Too slow NIC TEAMING mode INDEPENDANT + ACTIVE/ACTIVE + DYNAMIQUE on my HOST HYPERv.

Hi

My NIC TEAMING mode INDEPENDANT + ACTIVE/ACTIVE + DYNAMIQUE on my HOST HYPERv is too slow !

i have 1 switch physique netgear 16p + 1 server DELL T440 with 2 NIC 2 port RJ45

he is configured with HYPERv.

i set up a NIC TEAMING on 3 network port (1+2).

Mode team : INDEPENDANT + ACTIVE/ACTIVE

mode balance : DYNAMIQUE

the last network port allows me to manage HOST HYPERv.

i set up 4 VM (2016)

I configured 4 VM (2016) using the concentrator vSWITCH of NIC TEAMING  (Microsoft Network Multiplexor Driver).

-I have major slowdown problems when I surf from the VMs

-when I don't use the NIC TEAMING, they can surf the Internet without problem.

-when i use NIC TEAMING + indépendant + ACTIVE/ACTIVE + PORT HYPERv that works well.

In the documentation that I find, it is indicated that everything must be able to work with the mode INDÉPENDANT + A/A + DYNAMIQUE...

the only time I should use PORT HYPERv is if I have a terribly fast 10Gbit network card (but it isn't)!

I have a doubt concerning the use of 1 or 2 physical Switch?

https://docs.microsoft.com/fr-fr/windows-server/networking/technologies/nic-teaming/create-a-new-nic-team-on-a-host-computer-or-vm

(Before you can create a new NIC Team, you must deploy a Hyper-V host with two network adapters that connect to different physical switches. You must also configure the network adapters with IP addresses that are from the same IP address range.)

https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Windows-Server-2016-839cb607

Switch-independent teaming. This configuration does not require the switch to participate in the teaming. Since in switch-independent mode the switch does not know that the network adapter is part of a team in the host, the adapters may be connected to different switches. Switch independent modes of operation do not require that the team members connect to different switches; they merely make it possible.

Do you have an idea about my problem?

(I specify that I do not want to use the NIC TEAMING in the VM only on the HOST)

Hyper-V VM running RDS - typing causes 1 character a second to appear

Hi

I have a Hyper-V cluster running Server 2016 Datacenter version 1607

This cluster is running multiple VMs, including 6 RDS Host servers for users to access both internally and externally through RDGateway. Everything has been running fine since last Summer, but in the last could of days, one of the 6 RDS hosts has started to experience a typing lag. This lag occurs whether you connect via an RDP connection or even if you connect via a console session in Hyper-V Manager (without running an Enhanced session)

The lag only occurs after you log in - i.e. at the username/password field, typing appears instantly, but as soon as the users desktop appears, anything you type (notepad, word, etc, Start Menu-> Run), any typing appears on the screen very lowly, one character every (roughly) 1 second, no matter how fast you typed in. no characters are lost though.

This occurs whether you log on as a domain user or a local administrator.

All 6 RDS hosts are in the same OU and have the same GPOs applied.

No relevant changes have occurred, and no windows updates have been applied in the last month.

All other VMs and the host servers typing is normal. Only this one RDS Host.

Has anyone seen anything similar before?

Anyone got a fix?

Thanks

Hyper-V IPv6 incomplete address?

Hello,

I am faced with a situation that is quite confusing.

I have a Hyper V machine that seems to be giving me an incomplete IPv6 address

Can someone possibly explain why

It is FE80-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXX%XX

But what is strange is the XXX is random, it can be on any block, not always the last one.

The machine registers a correct IPv4 address.

It's over Wireless, but it also happens Wired.

What is equally strange is I have the same scenario elsewhere and I am getting the correct info.

Is there something I am doing wrong with the networking?

Thanks!

Hyper-V Guest VM Internet Access

$

Hi guys,

I'm racking my brain trying to figure out how to allow my VMs internet access. I've tried so many things including what's in all three links below:

  • https://windowsreport.com/hyper-v-not-connecting-internet/
  • https://youtu.be/2hUILtCbOfE

And yet my VM's do not have internet access.

So in a nutshell, I've tried variations of:

  1. Create a virtual switch (an external switch, bound to the network adapter of my host and also tried an internal switch)
  2. Assign the new virtual switch to my VM.
  3. ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) to allow network users through my host computers network connection.

Any suggestions for what I'm doing wrong or missing?

Thanks,
gwh1z

License Key and AVMA key

Hi, on the Hyper-V host, I've activated with the AVMA key (and it accepted it at first and seemed only after installing update did it say Windows Server not activated), and the VM with the actual license key (which also worked).  I realise that is the wrong way, but now I cannot put the actual license key into the host as it says this key has already been used.  What to do?

Installing Hyper-V role fails on Windows Server 2012 R2

$

Hi,

I am trying to install the Hyper-V role on our company's server (with Windows 2012 R2 installed with Standard license).

But for some reason after the progress bar has reached the end - and it does its required restart then after it starts up again, it says that it was unable to install it and then rolls back.

When I checked the Event Viewer logs then I saw an error such as this:

"Update Microsoft-Hyper-V-Offline of package Microsoft-Hyper-V-ServerEdition-Package failed to be turned on. Status: 0x800f0922.

I feel like I should add to this that we have been failing some Windows Updates in a similar way, it restarts and then rolls back. I don't know if those can be connected somehow.. But it feels to me like there could be a connection, perhaps?
I tried installing it through the Graphical interface the first time and then saw that somebody suggested trying to install it through PowerShell, but unfortunately that made no difference.

Also, the server has other roles and services running as well - we are trying to run only one Virtual machine on top of all that. I tested a similar setup on a random desktop computer and I had no problems getting the Hyper-V role installed. The one that I tested didn't have as many features installed, but I tried to make the conditions similar.

Kind regards,

Rauno S.

Problem using compatibility report from Compare-VM to migrate VM to host with different vswitch

$

I am trying to live migrate VM's to a different host using powershell.  The virtual switch/network name on the destination host is different from that on the source, so a simple Move-VM fails because it can't connect the vnic to the same network.

I found a couple of articles describing the use of a compatibility report from Compare-VM to move VM's in such cases:

https://www.altaro.com/hyper-v/using-compare-vm/

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2014/02/12/using-powershell-to-live-migrate-to-a-computer-with-a-different-virtual-switch.aspx

Based on those, I was able to generate a compatibility report for the VM successfully.  However, when I try to fix the incompatibility in the report using Connect-VMNetworkAdapter, I get an error.  The command line and error are:

$VMReport.Incompatibilities |
 ?{$_.messageid -eq 33012}|
 %{connect-vmnetworkadapter $_.Source -switchname “Hyper-V Network”}

Replicated guest stuck merging on Hyper-V Core 2016

$

Since upgrading some host servers to Hyper-V Core 2016, I've been having some problems with replication coupled with checkpoints.

In my present example, I have a replicated Hyper-V guest (Gen2, V5.0). We run a nightly backup process which will take a checkpoint of the replica, copy the VHDX files to a backup store then delete the checkpoint.

Some nights, the guest seems to get stuck applying replica changes and will not allow the checkpoint to be deleted. Our backup process will wait until the machine has finished applying changes, but in this case it never happens and the replica guest is stuck with "Applying Registered Delta..." in the Status column of Hyper-V Manager. Replication becomes critical and changes are no longer replicated as the backlog is too great.

NOTE: This has also occurred once with "Applying Replica Changes..." in the column

Through the front-end I have the ability to right-click and select "Cancel Applying Replica Changes", but I have used this in the past and it has no effect other than removing the option from the menu. The only solution I've so far discovered is to completely reboot the host.

I have attempted to restart the VMMS service as similar issues in the past have resolved themselves after doing this, but in this case the service freezes with the status "Stopping" and can no longer be interacted with. I had to do a cold reboot to recover as the host got stuck doing a soft reboot.

I'm a bit at a wits end now as this has halted my upgrade plans until I can resolve this problem, and I'm unable to find a anyone posting about exactly the same issue in Hyper-V 2016.

I have found similar posts where people have suggested the problem is Windows Defender. I did try uninstalling this windows feature but it didn't make a difference. After this, I found another post (on these forums) which suggested the issue was Windows Defender NOT running when a third party anti-virus was also installed. I can confirm that prior to uninstalling, Windows Defender was running with the default installation settings and there was no third party AV. I am wondering if perhaps Windows Defender behaves differently on Hyper-V Core as opposed to Windows Server 2016.

The forum post was here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/feb3e9a6-9520-461f-bd4c-79be0a7a2837/hyperv-server-2016-replication-issues-stuck-on-creating-a-reference-point?forum=winserverhyperv

Other points of interest:

  • This is not specific to only one of the hosts or one of the guests
  • The issue will occur whether or not the guest is v5 or v8
  • This issue will occur whether or not the source host is Hyper-V 2012 or Hyper-V 2016
  • This issue did not/does not occur on Hyper-V Core 2012R2
  • There is plenty of disk space remaining (>600GB)
  • Replication is setup to keep 24 hourly checkpoints and changes are replicated every 30 seconds.
  • The host has several other running guests and replicated guests, but the issue has occurred on a host where it had only one replicated guest.
  • The latest windows updates have been applied.
  • This does mostly seem to happen almost exclusively on large guests (>600GB) which are likely to be replicating the most changes. I have had it occur once on a smaller guest.

Hi,

Does anyone know if you build storage cluster in hyper-v? if you are familiar with VMware you can create storage cluster from multiple datastores(LUN). I need to know if we can do the same in hyper-v.

Hyper-V Server 2019 - RDP won't enable

Hey All,

I'm having some trouble with my Hyper-V standalone installations. I can't seem to get RDP to enable. Every time I do, it says it's enabled, but when it refreshes the sconfig window it still shows disabled. My second host has no issues with RDP and works fine.

I found this other topic that says KB4482887 will fix this issue, however when I try to install it it says that this update is not compatible with this version of windows.

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c9d82adb-5dd5-4e43-878c-2e98e00c2943/hyperv-server-2019-rdp-not-working?forum=winserverhyperv

Am I doing something wrong? I've been trying to figure this issue out for a while, but I've finally hit a roadblock.

Thanks!

Activation VM and performance issue

Hello everyone;

Hope you're fine, you and your family, in this difficult period.

I have an issue regarding activation VM in Hyper-V and about processor performance in this machine. let me explain :

I have one physical server with 16 logical processors , installed on it Windows 2016 Standard edition.

3 virtual Machine Windows Server 2016 Standard edition.
but only one of this virtual Machine are automatically activated with the same licence as the Host.

the two other, it's not possible for me to activate any one of them.

I know that it's not possible to activate them All , but I'm only allowed to activate Two of them. for the third one i used another licence.

the second problem is in one of this two virtual machine not activated , i allocate for it for it 5 vCPU , but in the system i onely see 2 CPU that are used by the system.

any one can give me more information about this two issue.

thank you

Win 2016 STD core - cannot delete checkpoint of VM nor export it

Hi all,

I have physical server Dell PE R330 (Intel Xeon E3-1220 / 32GB RAM /PERC H330 / RAID-1 on SSD / RAID 10 on SAS 15K).

Windows 2016 standard with Hyper-V / AD / DNS / DHCP installed on SSD RAID.

Hyper-V service has mostly standard settings. There are 2 virtual machines(KAV and WinFS-V) - both Win 2016 STD .

There's about 20-25% free space on all volumes at hypervisor right now.

All VM has 2 vhdx - first located on SSDfor OS and second on SAS for DATA.

All 3 OSes were patched last month.

One of VM has a problem. A year before the checkpoint was taken. So there were vhdx and avhdx disk files.

Today we have decided to take a new checkpoint, but the strange error raised.

Then we tried to delete old checkpoint (it takes about 34Gb), but Windows also showed strange error (no specific error like 0x87979879). Just generic error and that's it.

powershell commands remove-vmsnapshot gives that generic error

  • Get-VMSnapshot -VMName kav

removing via GUI was failed, checkpoint and full tree too

and export VM as well.

After we followed some tips and merged vhdx and avhdx disk files for this VM.

Now it works with merged disk files, but shows that it has a checkpoint.

We cannot delete it, create new one or export VM and re-create KAV again.

If we create new VM (say KAV-2) and connect merged vhdx form old KAV, the configuration changes and services can't run.

EventViewer shows several errors,

every time I tried to remove checkpoint, these 4 errors arise

  1. The Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service encountered an unexpected error: Unspecified error (0x80004005).
  2. Virtual machine failed to generate VHD tree: 'The specified network resource or device is no longer available.'('0x80070037').
