How to shrink a VHDX Hyper-V disk

$

0

I had a great deal of trouble shrinking a Hyper-V VHDX 250GB fixed disk that was 50% full. I was hoping for a best method for shrinking vhdx hd files.

In the virtual machine I tried

* defrag - shows 84% and decreases as I try more attempts

* disk manager - shrink to smallest space and leave empty space unused

In Hyper-v control on the host machine I tried

* edit disk - compact

* edit disk - convert -failed

* edit disk - copy to new file and then tried all the above unsuccessfully

On the host machine I tried

* powershell Resize-vhd in many iterations but all failed

Finally, I used Paragon Hard Disk Manager to create a HyperV image backup to a .vhdx. then I used Hyper-V to convert it to a expanding hard disk, and the new hard drive changed from 250GB to 100GB.

Thanks!

Hyper-V Server 2016 Now Requires StartupKey or Password for Boot Drive? Not TPM Alone?

$

When using Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (Server Core) I was able to use the following command to encrypt the boot drive (C:) -

manage-bde -on C: -rp

The motherboards I've been using have a TPM 2.0 installed.  With Server 2012 R2 I was able to encrypt the C: drive with either a BIOS or UEFI configuration.

But now with Hyper-V Server 2016 (Server Core) I get the following error message when I try to use the same command to encrypt the boot drive (C:) -

C:\>manage-bde -on C: -rp
BitLocker Drive Encryption: Configuration Tool version 10.0.14393
Copyright (C) 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

Volume C: []
[OS Volume]
ERROR: Specifying the parameter '-StartupKey' or '-Password' is required to BitLocker-protect the OS volume.

Type "manage-bde -on -?" for more information.

NOTE: If the -on switch has failed to add key protectors or start encryption,
you may need to call "manage-bde -off" before attempting -on again.

With Hyper-V 2016 the motherboard is configured for UEFI and Secure Boot and I used MSINFO32 to confirm both are on as expected.

I have a single RAID10 drive that has a logical C: (Boot) and D: (Data) drive on it.  With Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 the C: drive only needed the TPM to be encrypted and for the D: drive I entered the following commands which allowed it to be automatically unencrypted via the C: drive.

manage-bde –on d: -pw (entered password - which I believe was stored on the encrypted C: drive?)
manage-bde –autounlock –enable d:

The motherboard configuration was setup to automatically reboot if there was a power outage.

With the Sever 2016 limitation it looks like I cannot use the TPM alone to encrypt the boot drive?  I'd have to use a method like one of those below to encrypt the boot drive and automatically reboot after a power outage?

a) I could either add a 3rd logical drive (for example X:) to my RAID10 drive and use that to store the recovery key for the C: drive.  Or I could leave a USB drive plugged in at all times and it would also contain the recovery key to allow the C: drive to boot.

But in both cases it seems I would be leaving something potentially exposed in an unencrypted location that a hacker could potentially exploit (given both the X: or USB drives would be unencrypted)?

b)  I could use the -TPMAndPIN, -TPMAndStartupKey, or -TPMAndPINAndStartupKey options to encrypt the C: drive.  But that would require me to manually enter in some additional information in order to allow the Hyper-V Server 2016 to reboot (which would be a nuisance).

With Hyper-V Server 2016 is there some way to encrypt the boot drive (C:) with the TPM alone such that these type of issues (a and b above) aren't a problem? Or am I overlooking something in how this can be done on Hyper-V Server 2016?

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

P.S.  I saw there was an option (-sid) that looked like it might depend upon something in an AD domain to allow the C: drive to be encrypted/unencrypted.  But I just have a small home office network and don't have that type of sophisticated environment.

Bug on file copy within a VM. Can't do concurrent file copies on other volumes

Hello all,

issue described happens on a Windows Server VM (2012R2 and 2016) running on a Windows Server 2012R2 and 2016. Issue is exactly the same on any variation between those OS versions on VM and HYperV.

Suppose we have a VM with:

Drive C: for OS and Drive D: for Data.

Both Virtual Disks are vhdx.

Reproducing the issue:

Drag a relatively big file from C: to D:.

While the file is being copied, drag a second large file from C: to D:.

Findings:

As soon as the second file is dropeed to D:, the file copy starts but the pre-existing copy operation is completely stalled *until* the second file has completed copying.

Can anyone see if they can reproduce this issue?

Thanks,

Alex

Is Windows Server 2016 supported as a VM on a host which max supports 2012 R2? (HPE ProLiant DL380G7)

Hello,

Just a 'simple' question.

I know the Hyper-V OS Supports n+1 as a guest VM so
HV Windows Server 2012 R2 supports Windows Server 2016 as a Virtual Machine

But if the physical Hyper-V host server only supports Windows Server 2012 R2, is a Windows Server 2016 as a GUEST still supported by the guest n+1 rule?

Please only Microsoft official links only :)

Regards,

Arian!

*yes Gen7 is old .. but just to know what if :)

enhanced session mode is on on my guest Server (domain), and guest workstation. I have turned on remote desktop on workstation. I have added domain user account to remote desktop users group from workstation using domain admin credentials. Still getting same stupid message about having to belong to the group. I have already tried rebooting. basic login works fine. What is the problem?

ASR Replica Lost But OnPrem VM Still Stuck in Replication

$

Hi

We have inherited a pretty poor situation where we have a couple of Hyper-V VMs that were being replicated via ASR to a tenancy in one Azure Region but due to a change in policy the company was required to use another region so all our infrastructure was migrated across - all except the Recovery Service Vault and the replicas. By the time this was noticed access to the previous tenancy, and thus replicas, was no longer available.

So we are now left with these on premises VMs that have replication set to a non-existent ASR environment, replication that can't be removed because it needs to be done from the 9non-existent) ASR end - meaning we have VMs that now have no current disaster recovery provision and that we are seemingly unable to easily provide a new one.

I have been looking online for possibilities but have found nothing so far, my only thoughts so far are either to try and force a new ASR replication policy from our current Region and hope it takes over or shut the VMs down and build new VMs from the existing disks. I would love to be able to test both of these options but creating some test VMs with the exact same predicament may not be possible.

Love to hear any advice, plans or similar situations that were successfully resolved.

Thank you

ISATAP Adapter missing in VM, how to add

$

We are requiring ISATAP on a 2019 Direct Access (DA) server. Despite we have enabled ISATAP at OS level (set-NetIsatapConfiguration enabled), the ISATAP Interface has no IPv6 address.

Have then compared the DA server to another similar DA server running on VMware. In the device manager, the VM running on Hyper-V has no ISATAP adapters, as shown in the printscreen of the VMWare VM below.

How do we get ISATAP support on Hyper-V? Thank you in advance for any help.

Hyper-V Hosts having same processor but showing Compatiability issues

Hi Team

I have created a new cluster of 6 hosts DL380 G10 with Intel(R) Xeon(R) Gold 6132 CPU @ 2.60GHz processors in them, they are on same ROM update as well.

if I try to Live migrate via SCVMM following message occurs in Select host tab.

"The Virtual Machine (VM Name) is not compatible with the virtualization host (Host name). the virtual Machine may not start or operate correctly on the Host. This may be due to inconsistent processor combability information. "

When I Try with the Failover Cluster Manager it gives me following error

Live migration of 'SCVMM DCUTL01' failed.Virtual machine migration operation for 'VMNAME' failed at migration destination 'HOSTNAME'. (Virtual machine ID xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)The processor settings for virtual machine 'VMNAME' are not compatible with physical computer 'HOSTNAME'. To migrate this virtual machine, you must first shut it down. After shutdown, you can migrate this virtual machine or export it and then import it on the destination physical computer with the correct processor settings. (Virtual machine ID xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)

I have not tried it with allow from compatibility mode on as that will not be a resolution. all my processors are the same.

Thanks

Saqib Ahmed

Sharing Files: Win 10 64-bit Host To Win 10 32-bit VMconnect Virtual Machine

I want to run Adobe PhotoDeluxe 2.0 (16-bit) on a 64-bit laptop (dual core processor) runing Windows 10 64-bit. I have tried using newer Adobe photographic software (Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, etc.) but it is much too complicated and the menus are too voluminous. I have dilligently tried using other brands of photographic software and it all poses similar problems and for me is neither similar to Adobe PhotoDeluxe 2.0 nor simplistic enough for me to find it appealing.

From what I can surmise Adobe abandoned a multitude of users when it stopped supporting PhotoDeluxe (1.0, 2.0. 3.0, 4.0, etc.), and Adobe will not be offering anything compatible but only has less simplistic, more complex photographic software now.

After researching it my conclusion was to do the following.

I have installed and working on the laptop running Windows 10 64-bit:
   - Hyper-V, VMconnect, Generation 1:
       - Generation 1 is being used instead of Generation 2 because apparently Generation 1 works on 32-bit Windows 10 while Generation 2 will not run on 32-bit Windows 10 but will run on 64-bit Windows 10
        - 32-bit Windows 10 is being used on the VM Connect virtual machine because it will run Adobe PhotoDeluxe 2.0 (16-bit) while 64-bit Windows 10 apparently will not run 16-bit software
   - AdobePhotoDeluxe 2.0 16-bit is installed on the VMconnect virtual machine running Windows 10 32-bit and works fine.

I cannot transfer files between the host laptop and the VMconnect virtual machine yet because I do not know and haven't yet found how to set it all up.

There is a lot of info online on similar topics I have tried but nothing has worked yet because apparently none of the online info I have found so far addresses this specific arrangement.

Can files be shared between the host and VMconnect virtual machine and if so how?

Expanded VHDX Hard Drive Not Expanding

I am using Hyper-V on a 2016 Server and trying to expand one of the VMs. I shut it down and then went to settings, Hard Drive, Edit, Expand. This seemed to have worked fine and I turned back on the VM. However, the C drive was not any larger.

After some research I noticed I needed to expand the partition in Disk Manager to an unallocated part that was created in step one, but there is no unallocated part. There is plenty of room on the partition with the VHDX VMs. And actually recently I added a new VM and gave it a few GBs and that all worked within Hyper-V.

Right now when I inspect the expanded VM the Maximum Disk Size is corrected to the expanded size.

Not sure what else to do.

Thanks for any help.

Hyper-V UEFI Virtual Machine Boot Summary

Friends, I need your help! It is the first time that I post in this forum, maybe you can help me.

Stage:

I want to virtualize a physical server that has a Windows Server 2008 R2 installed with two SATA disks. Both discs are in GPT. When I virtualize with the DISK2VHD with VHDX format and run the virtual machine with Generation 2 it throws the following error:

"Hyper-V UEFI Virtual Machine Boot Summary

SCSI Disk (0,0) The boot loader did not load an operating system

SCSI Disk (0,1) The boot loader did not load an operating system "

Regenerated the virtual machine, now Generation 1, and a black screen remains with the cursor blinking.

What am I doing wrong????.

2012 R2 guest hangs at hyper-v logo

Windows Server 2012 R2 Host with GUI.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Guest with GUI.

When the guest is turned on, it gets to the Hyper-V log with the spinning circle and goes no further.  The circle continues to spin.  After rebooting the guest three times, the recovery console comes up.  I can also enter the recovery console using the Windows Server 2012 R2 DVD/ISO.

ChkDsk says the disk is fine.

SCF /SCANNOW/ /OFFDIR /OFFWINDIR did fix some files but that didn't help.

I have reason to believe the last round of MS updates hosed the guest.  Are there any boot logs I can check to see where boot is failing?

I have some question

1. If there are 3 Nodes in Hyper V cluster and suddenly one node failed then what kind of migration of VMs happen from one host to other host, is it Live Migration or Quick migration?

2. What is difference between Live migration and Quick migration?

3. Does Live Migration or quick migration reboot servers or disconnect network during migration?

Hyper-V Host (Win 8) to XP Virtual Machine File Transfer

$

Hello guys, first post here, and I've got a question about transferring files from the host computer to an xp hyper v virtual machine. I've researched and tried many methods but some are too complicated or in the case of the floppy it doesn't have enough space. I need to transfer a 30mb 16-bit application from my host, Windows 8, to a windows XP virtual machine where I think I can run it. I seem to be "missing some network hardware" so I can't exactly access the internet, but is there still a way to transfer an app within a host-to-vm network? I think I set up an external network, but don't really know how to use it.

Thanks, and happy new year

vEthernet adapters lose network settings on reboot

Hello - I have a strange issue on my Server 2012 Hyper-V hosts.  Whenever I reboot, the ip address settings are lost.  When I go into the NIC settings, the correct IP info appears but if I do ipconfig, its APIPA  169.x.  It only happens with 2 out of 3 virtual switches.  The difference is that they are marked to "Allow management operating system to share this network adapter" in Hyper-V network manager.

Connection from Skype to Audiocodes not working after KB4540670, fixed by disabling VMQ

$

Hi, we have a Skype for Business installation and multiple Audiocodes Mediant 1000 gateways. Skype server is running on Windows Server 2016 on top of Hyper-V of Windows Server 2016. Host has Intel X520 NICs. VM has used VMQ, but not SR-IOV, for years without any issues.

Yesterday we installed KB4540670 on both the Hyper-V hosts as well as the VM. Today around noon we suddenly received reports from all our locations that PSTN calls would not work. I found that Audiocodes logs were full of messages like this:

-- SRTP Error - failed decrypting RTCP packet (PacketLength=191, PayloadLength=0): wrong SSRC (11) [Code:0x3700e] [CID:53]
SRTCP_SSRC_ERROR:1  [Code:0x5004] [CID:53]

And there were corresponding events in Skype log:

An attempt to route to a gateway failed. Could not route to Gateway xxxxx, the attempt failed with response code: 503 Service Unavailable

Uninstalling KB4540670 from the VM or moving it to another Hyper-V host did not help anything. After reboot we probably could make one or two calls but then it stopped working.

Eventually I disabled VMQ for that VM, and everything started to work in that very instant.

Could there be a compatibility issue with either VMQ or the Intel drivers in KB4540670?
