Hyper-V vSwitch monitor mode set to source gives only uni-directional traffic on destination VM

$

Hello,

I was trying to set up mirroring on Hyper-V Windows Server 2016 system, according to well-known article:

Setting up Port Mirroring to Capture Mirrored Traffic on a Hyper-V Virtual Machine

My goal was to mirror traffic coming to/from physical switch port to dedicated physical Hyper-V host's NIC interface and then get this traffic on sniffing VM set to "Destination" mode.

The point is that I am only seeing uni-directional traffic on sniffing VM machine, whereas I can see bi-directional traffic directly on host's NIC interface.

One thing that may be the source of the problem is that I cannot enable Microsoft NDIS Capture filter driver in vSwitch configuration. Each time I check the box and hit "Apply" button, I have the box unchecked, when I get back to vSwitch settings:

Is that because there are some NIC's drivers incompatibilities with NDIS functionality ?

Guys, could you please put some more light on this issue ?

REGARDS, Robert

Greetings, all.

I'm currently trying to create a production checkpoint on a VM running WS2019. Get the error message:

"An error occurred while attempting to checkpoint the selected Virtual Machine

Taking a checkpoint failed

The operation is not supported"

What could have caused this? Thanks for any info on the matter. Have a good one.

Hyper-V Replication - AVHDX files on VHDX files NOT getting replicated

$

I have a problem with multiple VMs and hyper-V replication, primarily on VMs with large files hosting backups or database servers with drives that see many changes like SQL Server TempDB. If the VM has hard drives I know are too large or get too many changes to support replication I do NOT include them (including VHDXs hosting paging files). However it appears Hyper-V STILL creates AVHDX differencing files on these VHDX files that are NOT part of replication and if the expected great number of changes take place, AVHDX files get large, and my host hard drives run out of space.

How do I get Windows to NOT create AVHDX files on VHDX files NOT included in replication to avoid this?

Detecting VM boot to desktop

Hi all,

Looking around I haven't seen any elegant way to determine that a VM has booted successfully to the desktop (assuming autologon).

Is there a Microsoft approved way of detecting this? Or is it only "check if a service is running", etc semi-hacks?

Thanks for any insights

Copy virtual Machine and Rename

We have a VM that has been exported, and then imported again as a copied as a virtual machine. We have put this machine on a separate virtual switch. We want to rename the virtual machine without losing the connection of the original VM to the domain. Can anyone recommend a way to do this?

Virtual Partitions

Hello!

So I currently have a virtual windows 2012 R2 server and the VHD that holds configuration as well the boot files is about to run out of space, is there anyway to make a new partition and copy the current setup of the server to a new VHD to avoid running out space and then setting that new VHD to take the place of the old one?

Thanks!

How to Get/Set VM Priorities

$

All the vmwp.exe are VM's running and all of them are associated with a PID and User Name. I want to write small code in C++ to do:

  • Get process property of all processes having the name vmwp.exe -  Please suggest a regular api or PowerShell call.
  • I will assume the returned structure will have PID, Status and User Name.
  • Then I need a call to get the VM name and its associated GUID - Please suggest a regular api or PowerShell call
  • Now I have GUID-VM and GUID-User Name-PID.
  • With this association I will be able Get and Set Priorities for VM using Set/GetPriority(PID) calls
  • On the other hand if there is a single call to Get/Set Priorities for a VM I will take that, that would be too good
  • I Googled a lot but could not get the single call so thought will do this round about.
  • Get-VM, get-VMProcessor there are about 30 calls none of them listed the GUID. I feel there might be a wmi call...

Failed to Realize

I got a Windows Server 2019 environment with a windows share hosted on a lenovo emc px12-450r nas.  Whenever I try and create a virtual machine directly on the nas, i get the error Failed to create virtual machine, failed to realize.  However, if I make the virtual machine on the local host it works perfectly fine.

I set up a service account on the nas with a matching service account on the host, but that didn't seem to help.  I tried creating the machines via unc path and mapped drives which resulted in the same

Any advise would be appreciated.

Hello,

I want to create a new Hyper-V virtual machine.

This "machine" should only use the windows 10 installed on my windows-to-go USB stick.

Is this possible?

Windows Error Reporting: EventID 1001 - Failover_clustering_resource_error

I'm running Server 2016 with S2D in a cluster to host Hyper-V VMs.  I get a ton of the following "Information" messages on my host servers running failover cluster, S2D, and Hyper-V.  It seems like the failover cluster has an error, but these are reported in the Application log as "Information" messages.  Anyone else seeing these or have any thoughts on them?  Are these just information or actually something to fix?

Upgraded vm version from 5 to 9 and now it wont boot

I upgraded my hyper v host from 2012r2 to 2019.  All my vms powered on and ran fine.

Two days later I used Update-VMVersion [computername] and moved my vm from version 5.0 to 9.0.

Now when I try to boot it, i get this error:

Failed to start.  Failed to get security info.

Host and VM addressing on /30 network

$

I am trying to get my head around how host and VM addressing can work when using a /30 network.

The interface on the router is /30 (say 10.1.1.1/30).  The VM needs to communicate with the router, and I don’t think NAT is an option, so seemingly the interface on the VM must be 10.1.1.2/30.  This leaves no spare addresses on the subnet.

This being the case, how do I address the physical interface on the HyperV host and configure the virtual switch(es) to allow transparent communication between the VM and the router?

Maximum size of VHDX file i can replicate.

Hi All,

I'm going to consolidate few file servers in one VM. Total size of VM should hit around 8-9TB. So my replication topology is following.

Primary and Replica servers are in same Subnet, Extended Replica server is in DR site (100mbps internal speed).

am i going to have any issues with replication, first of all from primary to replica and second from replica to extended replica server?

I've never gone above 2TB VM replication before.

Please advise.

Unable to create VM in Server 2016 error code c0350005

So apparently this is an incredibly rare error since googling it produces no results in english other than one cryptic page. This is a clean server I am doing a clean image for. The host is up to date and I tried both creating a new VM from installation media and even trying to mount a blank server VM I've used for installs before. Both fail with the same exact error. I've disabled virtualization based security in group policy but it still shows as running in system info, even after a reboot, so I'm assuming this is something new that requires a special work around, although I can't find what I'm doing wrong. I just setup a bunch of servers for another client a few months ago and none of these problems presented themselves.

Also tried the command Set-VMProcessor -VMName "server" -ExposeVirtualizationExtensions $false but it did nothing.

VLANs in Hyper-V nested virtualization possible?

$

0

Hello,

I have a little test environment using nested virtualization in Windows Server 2019 wehre I need to use VLANs.

The environment consists of:

- pHost > a physical server with Hyper-V role
- vHostSwitch > a private virtual switch on pHost

- vHost1 > a virtual server on pHost with Hyper-V role, connected to vHostSwitch(mac spoofing & ExposeVirtualizationExtensions enabled)
- vmSwitch > an external virtual switch on vHost1 (shared with management os)

- vHost2 > a virtual server on pHost with Hyper-V role, connected to vHostSwitch (mac spoofing & ExposeVirtualizationExtensions enabled)

- vmSwitch > an external virtual switch on vHost2 (shared with management os)

- VM1A > a virtual Server on vHost1, connected to vmSwitch (on vHost1)

- VM1B > a virtual Server on vHost1, connected to vmSwitch (on vHost1)

- VM2A > a virtual Server on vHost2, connected to vmSwitch (on vHost2)

- VM2B > a virtual Server on vHost2, connected to vmSwitch (on vHost2)

So far, so good. All Servers can ping and reach each other without VLANs.

Also everthing is fine, when I configure a VLAN on the pHost by Setting the same VLAN ID in the Hyper-V network Cards for vHost1 and vHost2.
vHost1, vHost2, VM1A, VM1B, VM2A, VM2B can still ping each other, and as expected can't ping VMs with different or no VLANs connected to vHostSwitch.

But what I need is setting up a VLAN for VM1A and VM2A, and a separate one for VM1B and VM2B.

As soon as i set VLANs in the Hyper-V network cards for those 4 VMs, the VMs on vHost1 cannot cummincate with VMs on vHost2 in the same VLAN.
This doesn't change wether or not I'm using VLANS on the pHost for the vHosts.
VMs in the same VLAN within one vHost can communicate without a problem.

Also Setting a VLAN for the Management OS in vmSwitch on vHost1 and vmSwitch on vHost2 stops the vHosts from communicating with each other.

In a real Environment, vHost1 and vHost2 would be physical servers connected to a physical VLAN capable switch.
But in nested virtualization the vHostSwitch needs to play the role of the physical VLAN aware switch.
While Hyper-V switches definitely can handle VLANs, it seems they drop VLAN tagged packets comming from Hyper-V switches from within the nested virtualization.

So is there any way to make VLANs work between VMs between different nested Hyper-V hosts on the same physical Hyper-V host?

thanks in advance!

Hi,

i've HV 2012 R2 with existsing VM's on it that it is on a shared storage.

what are my options if i need to create a cluster for that host with the active VM's on it?

can i create the cluster on the exists host and then add another host to the cluster or i need to create cluster from the second host and then add the first host?

what about the shared storage and the active vm's do i need to turned them off when i add the host to the cluster?

what will happened to the shared storage on the main host when i add it to the CSV?(i can map the LUN to both server)

Hyper-V manager - black screens between Basic and Enhanced sessions

$

Hi all,

This seems like a common problem on the internet but I haven't found a definitive solution anywhere.

Sometimes when booting up a Windows 10 VM, it will boot to a black screen in either a Basic or Enhanced session.

When I switch from the one to the other magically I can see that the VM has indeeded booted. The mere switching between the session types (Basic to Enhanced or vice versa) fixed the problem.

Obviously however it would be nice to not have to do this.

Does anyone know of the reason why this occurs and how to fix it once and for all? :)

I am using the latest HyperV manager with the latest graphics drivers.
