Host Windows Server 2019 Std + VM Licensing

Hi All,

I had installed and activated a host Windows Server 2019 Standard w/ 16-cores and normally with an OEM key.

After two weeks, we had to spin up a Hyper-V VM running the same Windows Server 2019 Standard, so I did so.

Tried to activate the VM using the same product key, however, it did not activate and in addition, deactivated my Host.

I have tried to re-activate the host via GUI and command-line (slmgr.vbs /ipk + slmgr.vbs /ato), but again, not activating and receiving the following error "Error 0xC004C003 The activation server determined the specific product key is blocked".

How should I proceed?

VM won't start due to authentication tag error (vTPM using untrusted guardian)

$

I've got a VM with vTPM and BitLocker enabled using an untrusted guardian.

This VM now won't start, the event log is showing the event:

The computed authentication tag did not match the input authentication tag

I've checked that the VM has a key protector, and that the signed and encrypted certificates match the installed certificates for the untrusted guardian.

If I disable the vTPM I can start the VM and it boots after asking for the bitlocker recovery key.

There are no errors in the HGS Client event log, so I'm not sure what is wrong with this VM.

Any suggestions as to where to start looking?

hyper-v video remoting was disconnected unexpectedly

i am using Windows 10 pro x64(host and vm itself). Have just installed the Hyper-V features and created a new VM.

When i tried to start it, i got the "Video remoting was disconnected unexpectedly" message. it is showing underneath on the left side, that the vm is actually running but i could not connect with it.

i can't even connect using remote desktop, because windwos is still not installed on it.

Cluster node - Event 252 - cluster service crashed

We have a 4 node Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V Cluster.  Over the weekend, one node of the cluster reported this in the System event log:

"Memory allocated for packets in a vRss queue (on CPU 14) on switch 620355C8-4D29-4D91-BE80-B840921EDC4A (Friendly Name: Team_Trunked) due to low resource on the physical NIC has increased to 256MB. Packets will be dropped once queue size reaches 512MB."

Seven seconds later it reported that it had increased to 512MB, then two seconds later the LiveMigration NIC reported it had begun resetting, then a few seconds later a reset was issued to \device\raidport1 (source: ql2300).  After two minutes of this and a few other repeats, I started getting warnings of CSVs no longer being able to access this cluster node and then the Cluster service shut down on this node and all VMs are shut down and migrated to other nodes in the Cluster.

Our weekly DPM backups of the VMs had started about 1.5 hours before this occurred so there was some additional strain on the NICs at this time, though that should have gone through the NIC the OS is running on so I don't know why that would have affected the other NICs where the VMs general data was going through (Team_Trunked) and the LM NIC.

Does it make sense that the first warning about Event 252 would have caused all this or is there more to this?

Cannot Create Checkpoints Manually or During Veeam Backup

We just put up a new Server 2016 Hyper-V host and moved roughly 10 VMs to it from several Server 2012 R2 Hosts.

We are running Veeam B&R and have had no issues until this point.  We can not successfully create checkpoints manually, and Veeam backups are failing for this same reason.

Error messages and logs are below.

Need help fixing broken Hyper-V disk chains, and identifying root cause

$

Hi, I'm running Hyper-V on Windows 10 Pro 1903. In the past week, I've had two virtual machines which have developed issues with their hard disks. The machines both have checkpoints, and are saved. When I go to resume the machines, I get a "failed to change state" error, and when I check in event viewer, I have

"'Linux-Castle-dev': Failed to open attachment 'D:\VMs\Disks\Linux-Castle_625E353F-F903-42CF-A536-1FDE83E55F0B.avhdx'. Error: 'The chain of virtual hard disks is inaccessible. There was an error opening a virtual hard disk further up the chain.' (7864368). (Virtual machine ID D8683EA0-3317-48BF-B2FB-DDFBC3BEC4D5)"

Based on what I've found online, I go into the machine's settings, inspect the hard disk and start working my way back up the chain, but the chain seems to be intact, all the way back to the root VHD. I haven't found any other suggestions for how to fix this.

Does anyone have recommendations for what I could try to do to fix these errors, and what might be causing them? Any help would be appreciated.

Hyper-V lists non-existent VM named "Th-VM" to DPM

Hello everybody,

after diagnosing why every DPM 2019 I know of offers a bogus "Th-VM" VM when we configure Hyper-V RCT backups, Mike Jacquet asked me from this thead https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/83718d47-9d4b-4579-a479-c1d96298b084/dpm-2019-insists-offering-nonexisting-vm-a-for-hyperv-host?forum=dpmhypervbackup in the DPM forum to post here. Mike found that it is Hyper-V which enlists a VM named "Th-VM". For details, please see the linked thread.

What can we do about this?

Windows iscsi boot issue on second interface

I am able to boot windows on first interface, with iSCSI. If I try to boot from second interface using iSCSI, the booting happens fine, but the boot procedure stucks with "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" message. I have disabled "NDIS LWF driver" on both the interfaces, though 2nd interface never gets me past that error message.

I have followed all the steps as per:

support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/976042/windows-may-fail-to-boot-from-an-iscsi-drive-if-networking-hardware-is
mistyrebootfiles.altervista.org/documents/TinyPXEServer/files/wfplwf.htm

This is related to windows settings in iSCSI boot. if anyone else has been able to get iSCSI boot over ipxe in windows with 2nd interface? if yes, any pointers much appreciated.

The question is not related to Hyper-V, in general, it's mostly related to iSCSI boot.

Hyper-V 2019 default disable Virtualization Based Security for newly created VMs

Hi Guys,

Basically every VM I create comes with VBS enabled and this gives me an error whenever I try to add virtual HBAs. I know I can powershell command to enable VirtualizationBasedSecurityOptOut and work around this problem. The questions is: is there any way of disabling VBS for every new machine? Like setting it default.

Unable to move Hyper-Vm VM: You do not have the required permissions.

Hi,

I currently have 2 Hyper-V stacks, on 2 separate domains. Out goal is to migrate all VM's current on Domain1 to Domain2.

I created a cross-forest trust between the 2 domains, but I continue to get this error:

An error occurred while attempting to contact the Virtual Machine Management service on the destination computer. Verify that the service is running and you are authorized to connect to the destination computer.

You do not have the required permissions to complete the task.

I have ensured that accounts from both domains have are members of the Administration group on the other domain, and should have the ability to remote access. I have also ensured the Virtual Machine Management service is running. DNS is working properly.

I cannot logon to the host Domain2 machine that I am attempting to move them to with my Domain1 Account, although there is a VM on Domain1 that is joined to Domain2 and I can logon to that one with Domain1 accounts.

I'm sure i'm missing something very obvious but I would greatly appreciate assistance!

Sam

Guest Slow Network Connection with Jumbo Packets

$

I have enabled jumbo packets everywhere in my network.

I verified that jumbo packets are enabled on the Hyper-V host physical NICs and Hyper-V virtual switch.

I tested pinging full size frames with no fragmenting from the Hyper-V host to another physical machine.

I tested Internet downloads from the Hyper-V host at full speed.

Inside the Hyper-V guest, if I leave jumbo packets disabled, all is fine.

If I switch the guest to 4K or 9K jumbo packets I get extremely slow LAN and WAN speeds.

Has anyone run into this before?

Host and guest are both Server 2019

Thanks.

I am running Hyper-V Manager on a Windows 2019 Standard server.  I am trying to install a Windows 2019 Standard guest OS.  I create the machine as a 2nd Gen machine and give it appropriate settings.  I a pointing it to an iso.  On startup it failes to boot off of iso.

I have search and tried most recommendations including

Disabling secure boot

Changing keyboard setting to physical

Changing boot order

Changing Template under secure boot

None have enabled me to load the Guest os

any thoughts

Unable to edit devices names in a VM

Hi

I have been trying to edit the names of the remote audit devices in a VM client. In Control panel > Sound > Remote Audio it allows me to change the name of the device but it dose not save the changes. I have tried changing the security settings for the VM but still unable to make changes?

My reason for making the changes are because I am trying to run Rosetta Stone version 3 within the VM. The software runs ok but does not pick up the microphone, my research into why this is has turned up that the Rosetta Stone software is looking for a device named microphone so I have try tried to change the device to that. All I seen to be getting is more cookie crumb trail.

Is there anyway that these settings can be change?

Hi guys, I',m doing a cluster to cluster replication, and created a DR and PR replication broker. I'm doing an initial replication, but i get the error "a virtual machine resource was not found in clustered virtual machine"

Might this be due to different VSwitch Names for both PR and DR? I cant figure out what's causing this

VM's CPU is pegging out but host machine is at low cpu, what am I doing wrong?

I am running SQL Server on my 'SQLVM'. I have 24 cores allotted to it. It's eating up all the cpu on the vm.

Here is the host machine's task manager with the hyper-v servers behind it:

This is my vm settings for the cpu:

https://i.postimg.cc/3NHLGx7g/3.jpg

I was thinking I should move my sql instance to the dedicated machine to give it access to 'more' resources.

Am I reading this incorrectly or am I going at this wrong way?

Isolate local test lab traffic from office network

$

I have just set up a Hyper-V test lab on my office workstation for the purpose of testing network changes prior to implementation. The lab has a host server running Windows Server 2016 with DHCP, DNS, Windows Deployment Service and Active Directory. There are also 2 clients running Windows 10. Currently the lab is on a Private switch, so there is no risk of its traffic bleeding into my office network. I'm at the point where I need to connect this test lab to the internet, but in a way that there is no risk of introducing its traffic, rogue DHCP servers, DNS explosions or any other assorted goodies onto my office's production network. My workstation hosting this test network is a client on my office network which has a Windows 2012 R2 server also running DHCP, DNS and AD, so there's plenty to go wrong if don't do this properly. I've set my lab on a different subnet, 192.168.10.# vs the office's 192.168.20.#. I'm not sure if this is sufficient, or if there's more that I'm missing.

I know I'm not the first person to do this, but despite all my searching, I can't seem to find anything that addresses my particular configuration. I'm still new to this, though, so maybe I'm not searching the right terms. Also, if someone knows a good tutorial to point me toward, that would be great too.

Thanks.
