Can not export VM from Hyper-V host to the network share folder?!

Hi there,

I’m trying to export VM from our ‘old’ Hyper-V 2008 R2 server onto the ‘new’ 2012 one. Both Hyper-V hosts are in the same Active Directory domain. Since core editions don't have GUI I’m using Hyper-V Manager console on my workstation (Client1).

VM Export

As soon as I click ‘export’ button I have windows popup immediately with the error message: “Failed to create export directory… (0x80070005)”?!

export error

I have setup appropriate share and NTFS permission as recommended by this post: “Error 0x80070005 when exporting Hyper-V VMs over the Network” (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2008849). I even gave Client1 the same permission but still have the same error message?! From Client1 or Server1 I can connect to the \\Server65\Export$ folder, can copy/delete/create folders and files without any problems. What I have missed?! Please help, thanks.

Hyper-V VM Generation 2 - How to boot from .ISO

Hi guys,

Server OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

I have a VM Gen2 with following settings:

I can boot fine from the same .iso from a Gen1 VM so the .iso is bootable.

I know that the Gen2 VM uses SCSI instead of IDE, but I have no clue regarding how to boot from the .iso..

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Kenny

Server 2019 Hyper-V Error Failed to Move RSS Queue

I have a new installation of Server 2019 STD with Hyper-V role installed.  I am getting the following errors over and over:

"Failed to move RSS queue 1 from VMQ 3 of switch DCC49724-C426-4DF1-B10F-9533638F2C18 (Friendly Name: HPE Ethernet 10Gb 562SFP+ Adapter - Virtual Switch), ndisStatus = -1073741811 ."

The Guest VM is losing network connectivity every once in a while for a minute or so.

Is this error the cause, and if so how to resolve?

Hi All

Here is the setup. Both Virtual machines are setup for dynamic, in VM2 only shows 14GB MAX RAM. Why is that? Is it because that is how much RAM is using real time?

HPV Host 64GB

VM1: shows assigned memory at 8GB

VM2: shows assigned memory at 14GB  Dynamic Max RAM is 1048576 MB

Thank you in Advance.

I am able to use vTPM if it is enabled before OS install.  However for the existing Gen2 VM I get an error starting the VM after vTPM is enabled.

Sorry for the chopped up error text, I did not copy the entire message.

"RemoteException: failed to start worker process........the computed authentication tag did not match the input authentication tag"

I am at a loss here, not finding much going pages deep into Google searches on various combinations of the terms.  Anyone run into this or have any ideas on where I should go?

Virtual Windows Server 2019

Good day Gents,

I am sitting with a very odd problem with one of my virtual servers.

We have a host with 2, Windows server 2019 loaded.

However when i try and select the ctrl alt del from the button provided in hyper-v nothing happens.

Also if i RDP into the server it accepts credentials created the RDP connection window and then immediately disconnects.

I was able to check services and processes remotely and could not see anything out of the norm.

File shares work fine.

One of their applications that uses SQL has intermittent issues since this if it aids?

Please let me know what i can check.

UCS environment, one VM won't Live Move

Have one machine in my VM environment that will not Live-Move due to this listed reason: "The virtual machine '*****' is using processor-specific features not supported on physical computer '******'. "  This is a SQL VM, and the builder did do some NUMA tuning on this VM.  It is running fine on the host it's on, and all other hosts in the environment are 100% identical? We are using failover cluster manager..

Thanks,

Jason

Need to be able to have VM autologin while "enhanced mode" is active so sound/full resolution etc will work.

To make a long story short I have a 32 bit Win 10 pro VM which I am using to run a bunch of old but VERY VALID educational programs that are CD/DVD based. These programs were originally designed to work in Win 98 or XP all 32 bit.

I have created .ISO versions of the CDs and I mount them and run the old programs in a VM.

The way I want to have this work, and the way it DID WORK under the Win 7 "XP Mode" feature is as follows...

A user does a normal log in to the system, was Win 7 ENT, now Win 10 Ent, X64. On the 2nd screen was an Icon which win clicked would start the XP Mode VM, open it up in full screen and log in to the "guest OS" which only had Icons to run the learning software, which was the only software, other than basic "Windows stuff" and the software to mount the .ISOs of the learning programs installed . The user then would click on one of the Icons, the program would run, they would use it then close it and either start a new program or close the VM out. At no time would they have to log in to the VM.

The old XP Mode from Win 7 was an excellent tool for doing this and enabled the college I work at to continue to use the many perfectly valid learning/teaching/studying programs that they have with out needing to buy in to the new "pay for the rest of your life" greed based subscription based/ cloud based learning programs these products have mostly morphed in to.

If Win 10 had a similar XP Mode that would pass sound to the hosting system and could autologin like the XP Mode does on my Win 7 system I would not need to be here asking this question, but alas MS crippled the XP Mode, yes I can run the original XP Mode VM in Hyper-V and get the old programs running, EXCEPT for sound/resolution which MS has INTENTIONALLY disabled.

Fast forward....

I have a Win 10 Pro x86 VM that is doing everything I need it to except autologin. I can get the VM to autologin, but NOT with ENHANCED MODE active which I MUST HAVE in order to get full resolution to match my monitors etc and even more important sound.

Access to the host systems "sound" etc can only be done, for some, I am sure, VERY STUPID SHORT SIGHTED REASON, with enhanced mode active.

When enhanced mode is active the system, from what my research tells me, has the "base" VM running, somewhere in the background, and then uses RDP to open up a session in to it through which it then gains access to the host systems sound etc. What a stupid short sighted design. AT ALL TIMES A VM SHOULD ALWAYS BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE SOUND and FULL RESOLUTION of the host system, at the least, at ALL TIMES EVEN IN BASIC MODE....DUH. Think audible "problem" alerts as an example of why this is important.

In general I could live with that IF RDP would support autologin, which for obvious security reasons it at least should not do without a lot of warnings of the dangers.

I have noticed that whenever I RDP in to one of my real PCs there is an option to save my "log in" I do not get this option when Hyper-V is doing the RDP session via Enhanced Mode. (I have read that this saved "log in" can also be manually done via a settings type of file) I have actually, for security reasons, never used that option so I don't know whether it saves both username and password or just username.

My question for today is can anyone out there figure out a way to get some method of autologin to work for a VM running under Hyper-V AND also keep access to the full resolution of the system and the host systems sound?

Is there a "settings file" I could edit that could help me?

Any "thinking outside the box" solutions for this problem would also be greatly appreciated.

A VERY BIG THANK YOU to any who try to help,

Ralph

Host Windows Server 2016 standard OEM, 2 VM's with 2016 standard OEM - cannot activate? 0xC004FD03

Can someone please explain the correct activation and rules for the VM's.  With the standard edition you can not use AVMA, supposedly you use the same OEM key you activated on the host. When I try to use the key I got the 0xC004FD03 error. I used telephone activation for the 1st VM. When I activated the Host I answered 1 computer, apparently you answer 0 for the first activation, 1 for the second (VM1) and 2 for the third (VM3). When I use 2 I get the error. BTW I did try the AVMA keys first before I tried the OEM key. My OEM is useless and keeps telling me to use AVMA but I do not have  the datacenter version of windows server 2016 to use as the virtulization server. It seems that this problem is very common and Microsoft should clarify how to fix it! I have seen some vage info that the OEM should supply keys or authorize guests but I have not been able to get this done.

Thanks in advance for any help.

VM - Pinging from the network

$

Good afternoon,

I am having an issue on our two node cluster where any machine on the second node cannot be pinged and so cannot be accessed - the network cannot see the vm.

Live migration works between Node 1 and Node 2. When the VM is on Node 1 - I can ping and access the VM.

Weirdly - if I live migrate back from Node 2 to Node 1 - the VM cannot be pinged until it is restarted.

Does this make sense? Why would Node 2 not allow connection to the main network? Everything is validating fine, the vSwitch is the same. Firewall has been tested on and off.

It's grinding on me now.

Converting 2008 R2 to a VM using disk2vhd

Hi all,

I'm having a strange issue converting a 2008 R2 server installed on IBM BladeCenter HS22 using disk2vhd and launching a VM

on ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Server 2016 Hyper-V production host that has currently 6 VMs running on it without any issues.

With GEN 1 the VM stops with a blank screen and a blinking cursor right after pressing the start button.

With GEN 2 I get the following error:

Virtual Machine Boot Summary

1. SCSI Disk  (0,0)                             NO x64-based UEFI boot loader was found.

2. Network Adapter (00155DFE171C)   The network media is disconnected

I'm not connecting this VM to the network because I currently have a physical production server on the same network and just

testing to see if I could convert it to a VM.

Thank you!

disk2vhd efi vhdx vm fails to boot (solved)

Edit:  I was able to work around this.  From what I've read, a bare metal restore from a physical to virtual machine is not supported, but that's what I tried and it worked beautifully.  The only thing that went right today.

So, disk2vhd isn't needed (and as we've seen, didn't work).  Instead I took these steps:

1. Control Panel -> File History.  After it finishes searching for drives, at the bottom left of the page is a link to System Image Backup.  Run it, and select a target drive for the backup.  I used a 64Gb key drive.  Next, it will show you the volumes that will be backed up.  It automatically selects (and you cannot deselect) the volumes required for a bare metal restore.  Any additional volumes are optional.  You'll probably want to deselect the target drive for the backup.

2. After the backup is complete, either move the drive over to the Hyper-V host or access it over the network.

3. In Hyper-V Manager, create a VHDX virtual disk from the backup drive.  Then create a blank VHDX that is at least the size of the original machine's system disk (which may have multiple volumes).  In my case, this was a 2Tb disk, to which I added an extra 128Gb just to be sure.  This isn't the size of the image backup, it's the size of the disk from which the image backup was taken.  I made my disks fixed size.  I don't know if it would work otherwise.

4. Create a Gen 2 virtual machine (this was necessary for me since my original machine used EFI boot).  On the SCSI host adapter, attach the blank disk that will take the image restore, and attach a second disk containing the image backup (this can be deleted later).

5. Create a second SCSI host adapter and attach a DVD drive to it (also may be deleted later).  Not sure if you really need the second adapter but I was just being cautious.  Assign the ISO image for your original machine's install disc (Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1, in my case) to the DVD.  Set the DVD to boot.

6. Run the VM and press a key when prompted to run from the DVD.  Select the Repair option, and drill down until you get to a page with the option for a System Image Restore.  Click on that and then select the drive containing your backup when prompted.  It will inform you that drive C: (your blank drive) will be wiped out and resized to match the original system drive that was backed up.  Then let it run.  In my case it took maybe three or four minutes, but it was a very sparsely populated 2Tb drive.

7. After the restore completes, you should be good to go.  After testing the new VM, I deleted the second SCSI disk with the backup image, as well as the DVD and its host adapter.

=================================================

I ran disk2vhd on a recently built Windows 8.1 x64 machine.  The conversion completed successfully, but I'm having no luck finding the right recipe to booting it in Hyper-V on a Server 2012 R2 machine.  I've tried both Gen 1 and Gen 2 (with and without Secure Boot enabled).  In both cases it apparently fails to find a boot loader.  The virtual disk is VHDX.

I ran disk2vhd twice.  Once including the additional volumes Windows creates for EFI, and once without.  The result is the same either way.

Any help much appreciated.

Why doesn't Hyper-V support .img floppies

There is not one default format for floppies, but if there was it would be .img. Adding support for this is essential. You may not care, but people like me got no idea what a Vfd is and work with .img all the time. Why would this be hard to implement? Thank you a lot for reading.

Cannot install Hyper-V on Windows 2019

The following is the message I get:

The WS-Management service cannot process the request. The service is configured to not accept any remote shell requests.

I configured "Allow Remote Shell access" in the GPO but it made no difference. I have since returned it to its default value.

Not that this should matter, this server has IIS, DFS and Certificate services installed. This was also an in-place upgrade from 2016. 2016 on this server had the same issue, so I did the upgrade to see if it would fix the issue and well it does not. I have another 2019 server in the domain that had no problem installing Hyper-V, so I am very doubtful this is a GPO issue. I am guessing it is a local permissions issue. I did try changing the execution policy for power-shell and that made no difference either. Again any advice would be great - Thank you.

Cluster node - Event 252 - cluster service crashed

$

We have a 4 node Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V Cluster.  Over the weekend, one node of the cluster reported this in the System event log:

"Memory allocated for packets in a vRss queue (on CPU 14) on switch 620355C8-4D29-4D91-BE80-B840921EDC4A (Friendly Name: Team_Trunked) due to low resource on the physical NIC has increased to 256MB. Packets will be dropped once queue size reaches 512MB."

Seven seconds later it reported that it had increased to 512MB, then two seconds later the LiveMigration NIC reported it had begun resetting, then a few seconds later a reset was issued to \device\raidport1 (source: ql2300).  After two minutes of this and a few other repeats, I started getting warnings of CSVs no longer being able to access this cluster node and then the Cluster service shut down on this node and all VMs are shut down and migrated to other nodes in the Cluster.

Our weekly DPM backups of the VMs had started about 1.5 hours before this occurred so there was some additional strain on the NICs at this time, though that should have gone through the NIC the OS is running on so I don't know why that would have affected the other NICs where the VMs general data was going through (Team_Trunked) and the LM NIC.

Does it make sense that the first warning about Event 252 would have caused all this or is there more to this?
