Windows Server 2012 Login Issue "The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded."

$

Whenever I try to login to our Exchange Server, I receive the following error:

"The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded."

The issue affects more than one user.

Relevant Info:

Server Version: 2012 Datacenter

Exchange Version: 2013

The Exchange server is virtualized.

What I've tried:

1) Remote Desktop from a workstation on the network

2) Remote Desktop from Virtual Machine Manager

3) Connect via console from Virtual Machine Manager

4) Accessing the server via Computer Management and adding my user account to Allow Login via Remote Desktop

5) Creating a new user account for myself by copying the account of a user who can get in

6) Rebooting

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Is possible to connect to Hyper-V Core Server, which is only in Workgroup, from PC with Win10 which is in domain?
I'm not administrator of the domain and I can't add the Hyper-V server to it...

Thank you!

Hyper-V and new AMD Ryzen

The only anwers I've found are almost 10 years old...

Does Hyper-V work with AMD CPUs (Ryzen in particular)?

If not, will it?

As far as I know AMD is also going to make server chips so I guess there is hope for that.

Mac Address Spoofing broken in Hyper-V 2019

$

I believe we have come accross a bug in Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V.
Does anyone in here know how to report this to Microsoft?

To make some virtual network appliances work, we need to activate the function "Mac Address Spoofing" on the vNIC of the VM's internal interface.

This is needed for VPLS setup and for a VPN concentrator setup.

The function is working, but with highly reduced performance, especially upload goes from 800 Mbit/s to 30 Mbit/s, and ping latency from 1-2 ms to 5-8 ms.

We have tried Mikrotik routers, pfSense, SoftEther on Windows, and we even set up a Windows Server as a router, and the issue is present i all cases.

It only appears then the VM acts as a router, that is traffic coming in through one interface and out through another, and only when Mac Address Spoofing is activated.

We have tried similar setup on VMware where the similar setup requires something called "promiscuous mode", and it works fne with the same VM's.

To make the test complete, we also tested with a Server 2016 Hyper-V, and that works as well.

So Mac Address Spoofing Works in Windows server Hyper-V 2016, but not in Windows server Hyper-V 2019.

Hello everyone,
I'll greatly need your help to fix my network issue between my 3 virtuals machines and my host :

Physical machine 1 (who host 3 VMs) :Physical network card : 192.168.100.100 /24
Virtual network card   :  is on 192.168.100.101 (created by the externe network of Hyper-V)

Physical machine  2 :
192.168.100.99 /24

Vm1
192.168.100.104 /24

Vm2192.168.100.103 /24

Vm3
192.168.100.102 /24

My 2 physical machines are connected with a switch in the same network.
In my Hyper-V Switch Manager, my network is "External" and the "Allow management operating system to share this network adapter" is enabled.
On my 2
physical machines, the fire-wall aredisabled.

The state of thsituation
My
physical machine n°2 can ping everyone (machine 1, Virtual network card and all Vms)
My physical machine n°1 can ping everyone (machine 1, Virtual network cardand all Vms)
All my VMs can ping my
physical machine n°2 but not the my physical machine n°1 (the host) ..

And, I don't understand why ..
If someone can help me.

Move Active Directory Hyper-V

We Have Primary Active Directory hosted on Windows 2012 (Host Machine) and the Active directory operating system is 2012 also. However, due to issues in the host machine we want to migrate the active directory to a new Host machine with 2016 OS. How we can perform this?

Another question if we decided to build new AD and transfer the FSMO roles to the new AD what could be the impact, especially for the On-Premise Exchange servers, File servers and the other Domain controllers?

Hyper-V 2019 Checkpoint Operations fails after a day

$

We backup our  Hyper-V 2019/16 servers containing couple of virtual machines, with Unitrend backup system, which requires checkpoints to be able to back the VM's.  When we tested to create checkpoint, it would give the error "An error occured while attempting to checkpoint the selected virtual machines. The operation cannot be performend while the object is in use". When we check the logs we get the following Event ID: 19100, 18012, 18014.
Normally when we reboot the Hyper-V servers , we are able to create checkpoints for a day or so after which the same issue recurs.

We have used ICACLS to grant the "NT Virtual Machine" user of each VM full access, and ensured that the VHD files and checkpoints are in the same folder. We also ovserved that the .avhdx files which are created would remain and are not able to automatically get merged to the parent .vhdx file.

This is happening al all our Hyper-V 2019 servers which are part of a domain.

hyper-v generic error when open virtual switch manager, virtual switches cannot be enabled, vms that already created can run normally

Hi,

I have a  problem with Hyper-V on Windows 10 Pro 1903. For short, Hyper-v generic error when open virtual switch manager, virtual switches cannot be enabled (and vms that already created can run normally.) This issue happened a few weeks ago, last week and today, I fixed this issue by running MediaCreationTool1903.exe > update this PC now, however it will just good for ~3days.

I connected MS-support (Windows, Tech support, for some personal reason I lost connection with the support) a few days ago and he tried to start some Hyper-v related service @ Services.msc but they stopped immediately, and ask me if I can try to run the Media Creation Tool and see if there are some services that should run but not running. (Later, I tried to launch some Hyper-v related service and when I try to run  Hyper-v Guest Compute Service it caused BSoD CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED.) After running MediaCreationTool.exe everything is back to normal, however, there's no difference in Services: Before (with the issue), After (without the issue) & Now (with the issue): HV Host Service, Hyper-V Host Compute Service & Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management is running, others not.

With the virtual switches, all of them have been disabled and I couldn't enable them. (And in their properties, as well my Ethernet adapter properties, I couldn't enable Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexer Protocol and Hyper-V Extensible Virtual Switch, just if you need that info.)

And, in Device Manager, there seems to have some issue with Hyper-V Virtual Switch Adapter (Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware (Code 37), {operation failed}, which I don't know how to fix:

I tried to disable and then enable Hyper-V, but as the last few times, it's not working. I also have run sfc /scannow, it 'did not find any integrity violations'. So, any ideas on how to fix this?

Can Hyper-V virtual switch support enable DHCP option 82?

DHCPv6 request of guest of Hyper-V did not respond

The default virtual switch I use is windows 10 for host and centos6 for guest. Both host and guest are IPv6 enabled. However, when using the DHCP protocol, it is found that the host of Hyper-V will respond to the DHCP request, but DHCP V6 will not respond. What should I do? How to make host respond to DHCPv6

Recreate VMs and keep VHDX to solve shutdown/restart problems?

$

Hi,

Lately a Hyper-V hosts exhibit problems restarting/shutting down certain VMs.

The guest OS seems to work OK, chkdsk and sfc /scannow don't give me any errors.

However when I shutdown or do a restart of the VM it stalls - I have to turn off the VM (shutdown doesn't work at that stage), which is not a good thing.

When later restarting the VM it sometimes refuses to start (maybe it got damaged by turning it off?).

The way I got it working again was attaching a repair ISO (not the Windows disk) and checking boot records and disks from outside the guest OS. This did work but it doesn't make sense to me: we're talking VM's here, so not sure how the 'physical' concepts of boot partition/record etc exactly map to the 'virtual' ones in Hyper-V.

I'm worried because with all the updates the hypervisor need rather frequent rebooting so this problem could easily get worse.

So finally my question: how does one best handle these kinds of booting/restarting problems in Hyper-V?

Is it advisable to create a new VM (with exactly the same parameters) and attach the VHDX to that VM, getting rid of the old VM in the process (and hopefully getting rid of these 'external' problems).

Sorry, no expert in these matters. Any and all help much appreciated.

Best,

Bavo

PS: I also ran some checks on the hypervisor itself (chkdsk, sfc, dism etc) and it seems OK

Hello.

Does anyone know if its supported to run a "mixed mode" S2D Hyperconverged cluster?
By that i mean running internal storage for the S2D pool and disks, but at the same time using Fibre channel HBA to access traditional CSV on SAN?

Script to Detect No Heartbeat, Turn Off and Turn On VMs

$

Occasionally it happens that our VMs are non-responsive, Heartbeat is listed as "No contact"
Typically after MS updates and restarts.
At that point there's nothing to do but forcibly Turn Off the VM and Turn On.

I'm working on automating this process.  I put together a Powershell script that seems to work but throws some errors.  I could use some advice on this to perfect it.  Then I can schedule it to run each night.

I am testing by shutting down some VMs, where it will list "No Contact"
It's not quite the same as when the VM becomes non-responsive, but it'll have to do for testing.

In my testing this script actually works to turn the shut down machines back on, but there are errors as well that I'll chronicle below.

 My script looks like this...

=============================================

$VMs = Get-VM
foreach ($vm in $VMs)
{
    Get-VMIntegrationService -VMName $VM -Name Heartbeat
if ($VM.PrimaryStatusDescription -ne "OK")
{
Stop-VM $VM -Force -TurnOff
Start-VM $VM
}
}

=============================================

The errors I'm getting...

Get-VMIntegrationService : The specified wildcard character pattern is not valid: VirtualMachine (Name = 'VDI-50')

How do you change the preference for the current host server in a 2012R2 Hyper-V Cluster

$

I have a 3-node 2012R2 Hyper-V cluster and have updated the cluster with 2 new servers. I want to remove the last old server from the cluster but it is always the current host server. When I patch and move the role off of that machine for the reboot it just goes back to that node. I was thinking that if I remove the old server from a potential owner of the quorum the it couldn't be the host server but don't know that that is correct. I didn't want to evict the node if it is somehow preferred in the system and an eviction would leave no preferred server. Couldn't find an answer in the forums.

As always appreciate your help.

Upgraded to Pro for Hyper-V, issues with duplicative ownership

$

Hi everyone,

I purchased Windows 10 Pro upgrade from Home edition so I can have access to Hyper-V to develop with Docker. I know; I could've just made a virtual Linux machine or installed a Linux OS, but I nonetheless decided to stick with my base Windows OS because I thought it'd be convenient at the time. Basically this is what happened:

  1. I purchased an upgrade to Pro for $99
  2. For some reason I ran into an error in the activation settings. I forgot what the error was, but I was having trouble getting my upgrade activated.
  3. In my poor judgment, I instead searched for a Pro product key online and used that to activate.
  4. So now, I'm stuck with my Pro edition but still unable to use Hyper-V and other Pro features (it fails to update on restart likely due to duplicative ownership issues with the key).

Is there any way to fix this or anyone I can contact? MS's default online support was not very helpful.

Thanks.

Virtual Windows Server 2019

Good day Gents,

I am sitting with a very odd problem with one of my virtual servers.

We have a host with 2, Windows server 2019 loaded.

However when i try and select the ctrl alt del from the button provided in hyper-v nothing happens.

Also if i RDP into the server it accepts credentials created the RDP connection window and then immediately disconnects.

I was able to check services and processes remotely and could not see anything out of the norm.

File shares work fine.

One of their applications that uses SQL has intermittent issues since this if it aids?

Please let me know what i can check.

How to shrink a VHDX Hyper-V disk

$

I had a great deal of trouble shrinking a Hyper-V VHDX 250GB fixed disk that was 50% full. I was hoping for a best method for shrinking vhdx hd files.

In the virtual machine I tried

* defrag - shows 84% and decreases as I try more attempts

* disk manager - shrink to smallest space and leave empty space unused

In Hyper-v control on the host machine I tried

* edit disk - compact

* edit disk - convert -failed

* edit disk - copy to new file and then tried all the above unsuccessfully

On the host machine I tried

* powershell Resize-vhd in many iterations but all failed

Finally, I used Paragon Hard Disk Manager to create a HyperV image backup to a .vhdx. then I used Hyper-V to convert it to a expanding hard disk, and the new hard drive changed from 250GB to 100GB.

Thanks!

Server 2016 Hyper-V and NIC teaming

Hi All,

I've just setup a Server 2016 with (2) NICs running Hyper-V role and connected to an HP ProCurve.  Here's how I set it up:

On the HP Procurve I setup the ports like this: trunk C21-C22 trk5 lacp

On the server it's setup like this.  Do you see any problems with this setup?  We only have one switch so please don't comment on redundancy.  Just setting up the two 1GB NICs teamed.
