Hyper-V 2019 - Guest VM's shutdown unexpectedly

Hi,

Since upgrading my Hyper-V servers to Windows Server 2019, including KB4471332 from last night, my guest VM's do not power down on restart of the 2019 host.

I can confirm integration components are as up to date as possible, and each guest is configured to shutdown when the host restarts.

Each guest gets the "Why did I shutdown unexpectedly message".

The even viewer yields the following all within 30 seconds of restarting the host:

Shut down physical computer. Stopping/saving all virtual machines...

'ADFS' failed to perform the 'Shutting Down' operation. The virtual machine is currently performing the following operation: 'Shutting Down'. (Virtual machine ID 0CFDF648-EE9D-4141-9EBD-9A6D911C3442)
'ADFS' failed to shut down. (Virtual machine ID 0CFDF648-EE9D-4141-9EBD-9A6D911C3442)

The Update Orchestrator Service service terminated with the following error:
This operation returned because the timeout period expired.

Failed to restore configuration for port 59229EE2-C880-4BF2-9849-89A21EC17772 (Friendly Name: ) on switch 300C0E17-E123-4182-BE62-AAD1860BE841 (Friendly Name: ), status = Object Name not found..

Everything is configured as it was on the 2016 Hyper-V host.

The message ADFS failed to shut down because it is shutting down seems terribly odd to me.  Of course its shutting down, just need the host to wait. (Yes the registry is set to 120 as the default time for the host....)

Fairly simple to recreate....just spin up a 2019 server, install Hyper-V role, throw in a VM and test.

Any help would be appreciated, but my money is on it being another bug.

HYPER-V Windows 10 Ubuntu 18.04 folder sharing problem

I have been running Ubuntu 18.04 on Windows 10 (64bit 1903 fully patched) without problems.  In order to expand storage independently of the system disk, I have added a second virtual Hard Drive on the SCSI controller.

I have created a new partition and set this to auto-mount at the same time as the main VM.  I have created new folders on the new VHD and set one of these to share.  Looking from inside the VM, the new Shared folder has the same settings (ownership & permissions) as the existing shared folders on main virtual machine (e.g.Documents and Downloads) and I can also see the Share name if I browse My Network in File Explorer.

However, while any Share on the main VM is accessible from the host system, the share on the new VHD is not:

Windows cannot access \\Ubuntu\Shared

You do not have permission to access \\Ubuntu\Shared. Contact your network administrator to request access.

If I look at the properties - Security tab for a working share I see

where martin (Unix User\martin) is also the owner.

However if I create a share on the new VHD

And if I go to Advanced "Unable to display current owner" > Change does allow any new owner to be found or set.

Is it possible to access a VM share if it is not on the main drive of the VM?

If it is how and where do I need to set the permissions?

CSV STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT When starting a specific VM

Hi,

I have the strangest problem with a customers infrastructure that I can't seem to get to the bottom of.

Server OS Windows Server 2019 Standard

Two Servers in the cluster accessing the CSV on a Dell EMC SC277984 via iSCSI over a 10GB back bone.

Basically long story short, but when rebooting (the act of powering it on) a specific VM it causes the CSV to drain and produces a myriad of errors and mayhem, it takes the entire estate down for about 15 minutes whilst everything begins to resume and power up again.

This error is found in the event logs.

Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('Cluster Disk 2') has entered a paused state because of 'STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT(c00000b5)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.

I have tried rebooting the SAN, rebooting the hosts running a Cluster Validation Test (passes with no errors)

I'm keen to try removing the role itself from the cluster and recreating the VM in hyper-V from scratch and re-attaching it's original disks but haven't had the opportunity to try this yet.

Snapshot of shared VHDX or VHD Sets

Hi,

I would like to find out whether there is any way to create snapshots of VMs using a shared disk (vhdx or VHD Set) when these VMs exist in a Hyper-V cluster and managed by SCVMM?

I know you can create VMGroups but this does not appear to work in a cluster scenario as the VMGroup seems to be host specific.  I ran a test and once I added the VM to the group I could not perform a live migrate so a group does not work.

Kind regards

Proper Method for Deleting/Moving Virtual Machines/Snapshots

$

Hello,

I have had several VMs that I used for testing and exam prep. Each time I try to delete them, I've run into some problems.

  1. There appears to be more to a VM than meets the eye. Not only is there a VHD, but there's also a Virtual Machine XML file and corresponding folder. When I use Delete... to delete the VM, all (some) of this stays behind.
    Q. Do I then just manually delete the VHDs, XML file, and its corresponding folder?
  2. In one instance, I had played with snapshots. When I wanted to move the VM to a new host server, I took just the VHD and created the machine new. This seemed to end up being a bit of a mess, and I decided to rebuild the VM from scratch on the new host.
    Q.  What did I do wrong?

The snapshot files were especially confusing. I deleted the snapshots out of Hyper-V Manager, but that didn't seem to remove them from the disk.
Q. How do the steps taken in Hyper-V Manager relate to what actually happens on the disk?

I just want to make sure that I understand best practices for deleting/moving VMs going forward, and that I maintain clean procedures. I have several VMs now in production, but am getting ready to add more hosts and VMs, and build things out further.

Thanks for any help you might be able to give...

How do I delete old VHD files off a hyper V host machine

$

I have created several test VMs and moved a production VM away from a particular host machine.  the only remaining VM cannot start do to a lack of disk space.  there should be plenty, the problem is all of the old unused vhd files. But I cannot figure out how to delete them.  the Hyper-V Manager only allows me to select them.

I certainly have to be missing something simple.

I have an issue after my vendor do some cabling replacement in data center. After that I found my VMs goes down. All VMs status appear "Cannot connect to virtual machine configuration storage". I decided to reboot Hyper-V Host and after reboot all VMs looks like ok (able to starts) there only one VM unable to start. When start the VM its appeared error as below:

While creating a virtual machine, something happened and put the virtual machine in a saved state.  I cannot delete or perform any action on the virtual machine.  It says cannot perform operation in current state.  I need someway to remove it.  I am the administrator on the server.

Can't delete a virtual machine

 Hi,

THis is the first time I've come across this error and am not sure what to do, when I right click a virtual machine in hyper-v manager and click delete it says... "An error occurred while attempting to delete the selected virtual machine(s).  You might not have permission to perform this task."

I know I have permission because I can delete others ( I am domain/enterprise admin)

Is there a "backdoor" way to delete it, or what can I do?

Thanks

Newly created VM keeps showing Boot Manager after restart

Hi Everyone,

Up until last week everything was ok.  Now whenever I create a VM, after a restart in windows it keeps showing the windows boot manager and will sit until someone hits return.  My servers all reboot on an out-of-hour  schedule for windows updates, so this is a massive issue for us.  If the VM is powered on, it's fine....it's only after a windows restart does it do it.  My other VMs are fine, only newly created ones.

Everything is on server 2019

Thanks!!

Hyper-V Multiple Nics

Dear all

I see very often confusion around the configuration of the hyper-v networking and the creation.

I am setting up a production network and with two nodes. I have installed Server 2019 on both physical servers. Both servers have 4x nics.

I want to achieve failover between two nodes. How do I configure 4 nics?

Nic1- Server OS connected to physical network

Nic2- Hyperv Management

Nic3- Vm’s

Nic4- failover

Thanks

Accessing a mobile device via Hyper-V

Greetings,

I am new to Hyper-V and have setup a Windows 10 guest VM on it, however I am in need of accessing an Android device that is connected physically to the PC.  My hope is to be able to see the device on the guest VM and access it via ADB (Android Debug Bridge).

I have done this previously on VMWare Player but being new to Hyper-V it does not seem as trivial.

Can anyone guide me on what I need to do to successfully communicate with my mobile device?

Appreciate any help.

Hyper-V 2019 Checkpoint Operations fails after a day

We backup our  Hyper-V 2019/16 servers containing couple of virtual machines, with Unitrend backup system, which requires checkpoints to be able to back the VM's.  When we tested to create checkpoint, it would give the error "An error occured while attempting to checkpoint the selected virtual machines. The operation cannot be performend while the object is in use". When we check the logs we get the following Event ID: 19100, 18012, 18014.
Normally when we reboot the Hyper-V servers , we are able to create checkpoints for a day or so after which the same issue recurs.

We have used ICACLS to grant the "NT Virtual Machine" user of each VM full access, and ensured that the VHD files and checkpoints are in the same folder. We also ovserved that the .avhdx files which are created would remain and are not able to automatically get merged to the parent .vhdx file.

This is happening al all our Hyper-V 2019 servers which are part of a domain.

VM's all go into backup status at the same time

I am having an issue with hyper v that has been occurring for about a week now.

A Couple of time throughout the day our servers become very sluggish, especially the file server.  When i look at the Hyper V manager, all the vm's are in a backup status.

There are no replications running, and once the backups are done, everything returns to normal. My challenge is that when this happens, it is almost impossible to open files on the file server.  And when i try to remote to the file server, it takes a long time to log in.

Mount an Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS VM to server 2016 hyper-v

Hi,

We have a Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS VM runnung on VMware ESXI 6.5u2 at the moment. However, we would like to get rid of ESXI and move this VM to Window Server 2016. However, is any method to mount this old VM on hyper-v? Also, as VMware VM uses .vmdk file, is anything i need to be aware if i convert it to .vhdx file?

Thanks

Thomas

When installing VM's i get the message No Network Adapters/Interfaces

Hello,

Currently I'm using a Dell PowerEdge R730 server in my lab as host for my Hyper-V on Windows Server 2019. I am trying to install Citrix Hypervisor and VMware on it for nested virtualization. But im having trouble setting these up, when installing these i get the message that the VM's have no network adapter connected. I have a virtual switch configured throu Hyper-V Manager and connected to my VM's.

My Virtual Switch Management is as followed:

I have an External network configuration using my Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet adapter.

I already tried attaching a legacy Network adapter but this gave no result.

Can you guys help me solving this issue?

Thanks in advance,

Koen

SCVMM Hypervisor host rebooting/crashing due to excessive CPU utilization

$

First off, I come from a VMWare ESXi background and have little exposure to HyperV.

There is a small 2 node cluster I inherited on SCVMM 2012 R2.  On occasion one of the hypervisor nodes will flatline at 100% CPU utilization which eventually causes it to crash.  All the VM's will then migrate to node that's left standing.  With the new load in addition to th existing load the second node will then proceed to flatline at 100% CPU and crash.  On the next cycle, the VMs will all live on one hypervisor, and the ones with resources will be online, the ones without resources will be in a failed state.

In VMWare, if you over provisioned CPU's the VM performance would get sluggish but there would never be the case where VM usage would directly crash ESXi.  I realize HyperV is a different model in the sense that the Hypervisor is still running on top of Windows OS; but is there some control I can put into place that prevents above scenario?
