Can't connect more than once

$

On the 30th of August my machine installed the following updates:

KB4023057
KB4512509
KB4506989
KB4511521

Running Win 10 Pro (64-bit) V10.0.17134, Hyper-V V10.0.17134.1

Since then I have been unable to connect to virtual machines hosted by Hyper-V more than once. In other words I can start a machine and then connect to it (either from within Hyper-V or from an RDP connection on another machine). But after disconnecting from the session I am unable to re-connect.

RDP times out with "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. The two computers couldn't connect in the amount of time allotted."

Hyper-V times out with "Could not connect to the virtual machine. Try to connect again. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator."

The machine is still running. The heartbeat is alive. It's just impossible to connect to it.

Any help gladly received.

Windows Server Core (1809 and 1903) hang with AMD processor

  Hello to all!

Searched, but didn't find who faced the similar problem. Even two servers with one processor: AMD Ryazan 7 1700, but different motherboards: ASRock and Asus. If need I write models.

So the problem exists when I use Windows Server (Core) 1809 and 1903 the server is about a day, maximum - two. No blue screen, not even Num Lock reacted, no signal was sent to VGA.

I haven't tried it with motherboard of Asus, but with ASRock is working on 1803 without any problems. But I have to use last Windows upgrades.

I read somewhere that built-in antivirus may be a reason - I removed it. The result is the same.

Can someone faced with this? What can you suggest?

Guest receiving same IP as host

I'm having a crazy time getting my Guest to use it's own IP address. It continues to use my Host IP. I already have two Guests running with their own IP. Maybe it's how I have my network configured. Suggestions?

I've attached some screenshots of my network-related setups.

Host: Win 10 Pro x64 1903
Existing Guests: both are Win 10 x64

New Guest: hasso.io

CTRL ALT DELETE does not work from Hyper-V Console

I  have a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 VHD that was created and running on a Windows 2008 R2 Standard machine for some time with no issues.  Last night I shut down the guest os and copied the vhd to a new Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise server.  Now everything seems fine except for CTRL ALT DELETE using the Hyper-V console.  I am able to rdp in.  Other guests on the same server are working as expected.  I have read many of the other posts and none really seem to fit our issue.  Any suggestions?

1. Hyper-v Host's like a Host3 and Host4. Both Servers are same Network and Same Active Directory Domain.

2. One of the Server  has Domain controller.

3. one of the server has Share Storage.

Action Taken from My end:
***************************

A)  I add the Both Servers to Domain controller. In the Active Directory user and computer console. I have to Provide the

Delegation Permissions to both server (Host3 and Host4) CIFS and Microsoft Virtual Machine Services.

B) click on " Use any authentication". As of part trouble shooting Click on Kerberos's

C) Administrator user to add to Hyper-v Administrator Group on  Host3 and Host4.

D) Enable the Live Migration on Both servers. For Authentication Kerberos.

Network is  Available Network. Click on compress

E) Create the ISCSI Target and add to the Hyper-v Hosts

F) Verified in the DiskManagemet  console. Make it has online. format with NTFS and Drive Letter is  Like a "E"

G). I tried to move the Virtual Machine from  Host 3 to Host4. click on All files single location. Able to move from

 Host3 to Host4.

H) I able to Move the VHD to Share storage. Currently the VM VHD location path is\\xx.xx.xx.xx\Virtual Machine files\virtual Hard disk\VM Name.VHD

I) I tried to move Virtual Machine  from Host4 to Host3. click on "Move the Virtual Machine". Here am receiving on error message

PLANNED Virtual creation failed  for Virtual Machine.

Virtual Machine Migration operation  for "VM" failed at migration source.

As Part of Trouble shooting:
****************************

A). LM 6600 port is able to open. Remove the Registry.pl from C:\Windows\system32\Group policy\ and re create But No luck.

B) All are able to ping. name convention is also correct.

AVHDX files without existing snapshots (Hyper-V 2016)

Hi guys,

I accidentally found out some AVHDX files for one of the virtual machine drives.

I inspected SQL-CPH2-OS.vhdx and got this.

So as you can see it is not referring to any of AVHDX files.

I also checked whether a snapshot or snapshots exist for this server but found nothing.

If someone ever had the similar situation please advise if it is safe to delete those AVHDX files.

vEthernet (Default Switch) can't disable

Does anyone know a way to permanently disable or change the settings of the Default Switch created when setting up a VM in Hyper V.  Host is Windows 10 1803, the VM is Windows 7, I've created an external switch but unless I disable the Default Switch I can't get internet access on the host machine or the VM but everytime I restart the machine the Default Switch is enabled again, not a bother for me but trying to explain that to users is a bit difficult.

Thanks

Hi guys,

Server OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

I have a VM Gen2 with following settings:

I can boot fine from the same .iso from a Gen1 VM so the .iso is bootable.

I know that the Gen2 VM uses SCSI instead of IDE, but I have no clue regarding how to boot from the .iso..

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Kenny

Hyper-V | Total Migration Time

Hi,

I'm a bit of a rookie when it comes to Hyper-V.

I managed to set up 2 Hyper-V machines and a DC (which I am hosting the shared storage, as well as accessing both Machines on it).

Live Migration is working fine, although I would like to know if there is a feature which would ease my life and tell me the start of the migration until the end time of the migration. This will round up the Total Migration Time.

Thanks for the suggested help :).

Host to Host Live Migration Network Via 10Gb Fiber

I was getting ready to run an experiment and I wanted to find out if anybody has any experience with this before I do.

I have two Hyper-V 2016 Hosts which do not have shared storage. They are link aggregated with 4 1Gb Ethernet ports which do the job of Management and "Shared Nothing" live migration.

Is it possible for me to drop two 10Gb network cards in each of these hosts and do a peer to peer network between the hosts and then do "shared Nothing" live migration on that network at 10Gb?

Thanks

But, if i stoping all services before restart, then my FreeBSD works fine!
Can you help me? Is it problem with Hyper-V?

FQDN Now Resolves to Internal Switch IP on Host

$

I am having trouble with DNS resolution using my host's FQDN after creating a internal network for my VMs.

Previously, my FQDN (<computer-name>.<domain>) would resolve to my machine's external IP.  Since creating the internal switch, my FQDN now resolves to that switch's IP (192.168.0.1) when used by the host.  I am wondering where/why the creation of this internal switch is now overriding my FQDN resolution and how I can revert that to previous behavior.  I need the FQDN to resolve as the external IP so that I can use the services running in the VMs from the host itself.  I have tried forcing this resolution in my hosts file with <external IP> <fqdn> but that is also being ignore in lieu of the switch IP, and would also not be the desired solution since my external IP is not static.

All port forwarding and network behavior is working properly apart from the FQDN IP resolution on the host.

Any help would be appreciated!

Does Hyper-v 2012 R2 support Linux Mint 18 "Sarah" - Cinnamon (64-bit)?

When restarting Hyper-V server on Windows 2016 it shuts down.

Hi

We are unable to restart the Hyper-V Windows 2016 server: when restarting the Hyper V Server it shuts down instead, and we need to physically push the power button on the server in order to start it again.

The Virtual Windows 2016 server does not have this problem, and restarts fine.

In the event Viewer we have the following information:

The process C:\Windows\system32\shutdown.exe (HYPERV) has initiated the restart of computer HYPERV on behalf of user HYPERV\Administrator for the following reason: No title for this reason could be found

Reason Code: 0x800000ff

Shutdown Type: restart

Comment:

Event ID: 1074

*****

We had tryed to shutdown via command like shutdown /r .

And we have got following sugestion:

A

click start and type power plan and select 'choose a power plan' from the list

next to the power plan that is selected click 'change plan settings'

click 'change advanced power settings'

under power buttons and lid set power button and sleep button (and lid if its there) to do nothing.

should prevent events from power button.

B

Go to "Settings"

Select "System"

Select "Power and Sleep"

Select "Additional Power Settings"

Select "Choose what the power buttons do"

Select "Change settings currently available"

Ensure that "Turn on fast start up" is deselected (unticked)

Click on "Save Changes"

The sugestion did not help

A hint would be nice

Cannot perform shared-nothing live migration from a management VM

$

Hello.

I have several standalone Hyper-V Server 2016 hosts. All hosts are configured for live migration using constrained delegation and Kerberos (as detailed here https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/deploy/set-up-hosts-for-live-migration-without-failover-clustering).

The problem is despite these settings (LM enabled, LM network set, Kerberos protocol configured, constrained delegation configured), when I initiate the migration using Hyper-V manager or Powershell from a management computer, this fails with the dreaded error (below). However when I initiate migration directly from the source Hyper-V host (using Powershell as there's no GUI), the migration successfully proceeds.

The management server is in the same domain and I'm logged on as domain admin.

The error is:

There are events on the source hosts:

Event 20308, Hyper-V-VMMS: "Failed to authenticate the connection at the source host: no suitable credentials available."

Event 20306, Hyper-V-VMMS: "The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to establish a connection for a Virtual Machine migration with host '<destination_host_FQDN>': No credentials are available in the security package (0x8009030E)."

Event 21024, Hyper-V-VMMS: "Virtual machine migration operation for '<VM_name>' failed at migration source '<source_host_netbios_name>'. (Virtual machine ID 2CF6050E-A08A-4B0C-A321-648AF12517B4)"

Events on the destination host:

Event 22040, Hyper-V-VMMS: "Failed to receive data for a Virtual Machine migration: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. (0x80072746)."

Event 20402, Hyper-V-VMMS: "The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to authenticate the connection for a Virtual Machine migration at the destination host: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. (0x80072746)."

Event 20400, Hyper-V-VMMS: "The Virtual Machine Management Service blocked a connection request for a Virtual Machine migration from client address '192.168.30.7': An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. (0x80072746)."

Here's a screenshot of constrained delegation configuration of one of the hosts, the configuration is identical on all hosts, ie. cifs and Microsoft Virtual System Migration Service allowed for all other Hyper-V hosts.

Any help is appreciated.

Encrypted replication configuration

$

Hello,

I am attempting to configure encrypted replication in a fairly large (10 hosts per site) HyperV environment.  I'm using the following article as a guide:

https://www.vkernel.ro/blog/configuring-hyper-v-replica-using-certificate-based-authentication-https#anchor009
https://www.vkernel.ro/blog/set-up-automatic-certificate-enrollment-autoenroll

From what I am understanding I will require a certificate on each host.  I will also need to add the broker's certificate to the trusted certificate store on each of the hosts that the broker will reside on. Due to the requirement of a certificate on each host it makes a lot more sense to use auto-enrollment to ensure we don't have to manually renew 20+ certificates on the regular basis.

I'm having a couple of challenges, for one our hosts are running W2K16 HyperV Core, so I cannot use the certificates MMC as described in the article.  Running the MMC remotely does not appear to give me the same options as described in the article.  Can this (or should this) be done in PowerShell instead?  What would the syntax of the certificate request be?

Are there any other (hopefully better) articles that can help me do this other than the one I found above?

Thanks.

Replication always fails after a Host reboot

$

I have Hyper-V setup on 2 * Server 2016 servers.  I have vm replication working over an MPSL WAN.

I've noticed that every time I reboot the Primary server, for Windows updates or whatever, the replication fails with the below error.

If I right click on the VMs from Hyper-V Manager, it appears as if the replication is paused, but clicking "Resume Replication" has no effect.

The only way I can get it going again is to completely remove the VMs on the secondary server, and setup the replication from scratch, which is ridiculous because it then has to copy all the VMs in their entirety which puts a huge strain on the network.

How can I resume the replication, or even better, have it automatically resume after a reboot?

Hyper-v VM kernel panic after deleting snapshots

$

We have a ubuntu 16.04 vm running on hyper-v (I believe on windows server 2012). It had like 3-4 snapshots. I was trying to export it but due to # of snapshots (which had been running for a long time) it was too large. I powered down the vm, deleted the snapshots (through the gui), saw that the vhdx files had merged, then exported it. I later powered on the vm and it failed to boot properly and displayed an error message that said there was kernel panic.

One thing we've done is we've booted the vm with ubuntu disk iso and we were able to successfully mount the old filesystem. It seems the files are all there. My boss suspects the bootloader is corrupt somehow so we're currently running fsck. If anyone has any other suggestions for saving the vm that would be great.

I was wondering, based on the above info, what could have possibly caused the issue? Deleting snapshots should be "safe" so there's probably gonna be some paranoia about deleting snapshots until we can figure out the reason.

Cannot join a virtual machine Windows 10 to server 2019 virtual machine domain?

DNS was successfully queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain "Harry.local":
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.Harry.local
The following domain controllers were identified by the query: WIN-7M2VT2137NJ.Harry.local
However, no domain controllers could be contacted.
Common causes of this error include:
- Host (A) or (AAAA) records that map the names of the domain controllers to their IP addresses are missing or contain incorrect addresses.
- Domain controllers registered in DNS are not connected to the network or are not running.
