Hyper-V Networking Issue : DHCP grabs a correct IP address / Gateway / DNS but no traffic, cannot ping gateway

$

Good morning,

I am having an issue with my main hyper-v host.  Last week my virtual servers on this host all started getting the yellow ! and we could not ping / communicate with the server.  I rebuilt the Virtual Switch, verified it was attached to all my virtual servers/clients, all fired away with no issues.

This morning, after the weekend, same thing.  My main SCCM server has the yellow ! and I cannot ping it or talk to it anywhere on my network.

The odd thing is, I took the static IP out of the network adapter and set it for DHCP and it grabbed a valid IP/gateway/DNS/etc...but it cannot talk to anything.  I made sure the "Allow management operating system to share this network adapter" was checked...it still is.

Any ideas/pointers for me to try?

Thanks in advance!

Hyper-V Virtual Switch dropping packets

Hi,

We are running a Hyper-V cluster running on Windows Server 2012 R2. It is a 4 node cluster built on Dell PowerEdge M620 with QLogic QMD 8262-k CNA. We have setup a converged network design for this cluster which means host traffic is also passing through Hyper-V switch https://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/library/dn550728.aspx#BKMK_Example

Problem is I am observing intermittent packet loss both on hosts and VMs. Due to this packet loss, cluster breaks every now and then. VMQ is disabled both on physical cards and NIC team.

I ran some monitoring and observed that dropped packets count jumps suddenly around the time when cluster complains of missed heartbeat signals (Event ID 1650). Are these number of dropped packets normal ? what other tracing can be run to see what is causing this amount of packet drop ?

Thanks,

Server 2012 R2, VMQ config

Hi

I am looking to configure VMQ (dVMQ in Server 2012 R2?) on a host and wanted to confirm I understood it correctly.

We have 2 x Intel X550-T2 cards and 1 NIC from each card (Two in total) is
configured in a team on the server using switch independent and dynamic
teaming options.

The server has 2 x E5-2650 CPUs with HT turned on, so 16 cores and 32 logical processors.

The host will utilize the team as well as the VM's via vNICs (vManagement
and vBackup for the Host), the VMs will have various vNICs dependent on
there requirements, not sure if this information is needed or not.

The current output from Get-NetAdapterVmq is shown below, ignore the
Broadcom NICs and BTeam this is temporary, they will be disabled when
live.

Should I set the following

Set-NetAdapterVmq -Name Intel Eth1 -BaseProcessorNumber 2 -MaxProcessors 4

Set-NetAdapterVmq -Name Intel Eth3 -BaseProcessorNumber 10 -MaxProcessors 4

Or should I be basing the MaxProcessors limit on the logical processors
number (32) not the physical cores like I have done above?  Or even the
number of Receive Queues listed on them two adapters (63)?

This would then mean for 32

-BaseProcessorNumber 2 -MaxProcessors 8

-BaseProcessorNumber 18 -MaxProcessors 8

I have another query about the status of the ATeam showing as false, but the above is more pressing.

I have referenced http://www.hypervrockstar.com/tag/dvmq/

Any help/advice appreciated

Guest time status reports VMIC Stratum 1 when host at Stratum 8

$

I have a VMM/Hyper-V cluster where, for historical reasons, we run Meinberg NTP on all the Hyper-V hosts, syncing to an external NTP time service.

Currently the external NTP time service is not working, so all the Hyper-V hosts are using their local onboard clock at Stratum 8 (which isNOT a GPS clock):

Checking current status of NTP service with ntpq -p
remote refid st t when poll reach delay offset jitter
==============================================================================
*LOCAL(0) .LOCL. 8 l 22 64 377 0.000 0.000 0.000

The VM guests running on these hypervisors show that they're syncing time with the VMIC Provider at Stratum 1:

PS C:\windows\system32> w32tm /query /source
VM IC Time Synchronization Provider
PS C:\windows\system32> w32tm /query /status
Leap Indicator: 0(no warning)
Stratum: 1 (primary reference - syncd by radio clock)

Root Delay: 0.0000695s
Root Dispersion: 0.0100002s

Last Successful Sync Time: 20/06/2019 1:06:00 AM

Poll Interval: 6 (64s)

I would have expected the VMIC provider to report Stratum 8. Does anyone know why the WMIC is reporting itself as Stratum 1? How can I change this behaviour?

Hyper-v vswitch architecture

Hi All,

I work for company which have a lot of little business unit in country.
For those BUs we install local server for simple roles like file server, print server...those are basicaly ressources servers, based on windows server 2016.

Recently we've migrated our local on premise servers to local hyper-v servers. File server is virtualized on the host and we have possibility to create an second VM for new need. (network analyzer for example).

Our host have only 2 network cards, so to have good performance we always create teaming on servers.

With hyper-v we need to implement an vswitch in the host to connect the VMs to the network. But the vswitch is getting IP adress by like the teaming card, so our host can be joined on 2 ip which is problematic.

What is the best practice for this case?

1) Implement static ip address to the teaming card and the vswitch
2) Implement static Ip address to the teaming card and APIPA address to the vswitch
3) Implement DHCP Address to the teaming card and static ip to the vswitch

I tried one test, I Let DHCP enable for teaming card and vswitch, and at the final the vswitch become the main network card for my host server and the teaming is not appearing in the ipconfig /all command

So I suppose the best practice for my case is to let Teaming in DHCP but implementing static ip address to the vswitch ?

Hyper-V 2016 VMs stuck 'Creating checkpoint 9%' while starting backups

$

We have a two clustered W2016 Hyper-V hosts, every couple of days one of the hosts gets stuck when the backup kicks off. In Hyper-V manager the VMs all say 'Creating checkpoint 9%' It's always the same percentage 9%. You can't cancel the operation and the VMMS service refuses to stop, the only way to get out of the mess is to shutdown the VMs, and hard reset the effected node. The backup works for a few days then it all starts again.

The only events I can see on the effected node is:

Event ID: 19060 source: Hyper-V-VMMS

'VMName' failed to perform the 'Creating Checkpoint' operation. The virtual machine is currently performing the following operation: 'Creating Checkpoint'.

Can anybody help please? Cluster validation is clean. Hosts and guests are patched up.

Hyper-V Manager not able to connect the Local Server

Dear Experts...

Greetings !!!

1. Issue Description:
Hyper-V Manager not able to connect the Local Server – Shows connecting to Virtual Machine Manager Service state and did not connect. Hyper-V Host shows Host Not Responding in the SCVMM console
Due to which VDIs were not launching to newly connecting users as just disappearing

2. Temporary Fix:
If we restart the server, the issue will be resolved but the current active users gets impacted.
Need to power on all the VDIs and ensured all got registered state
And also the same issue keep on re-occurring frequently and affecting production users

3. Troubleshooting Steps Taken:
We tried to restart the service SCVMM and WS-Remote Management service which got restarted. But still the issue persists.
When we restart the WMI Service, one of its dependent service Hyper-V Virtual Machine Manager (vmms.exe) goes to stopping state and neither stopped nor restarted.
Tried to kill the vmms.exe process from task manager and via command prompt using the commands but it never destroyed.
It says cannot stop the Virtual machine manager service, already another running instance exists, access denied (when kills process from task manager), etc.
Until the server reboot the issue will not be resolved.

Thanks in Advance ...

Hi,

My Windows server 2016 HyperV SuSe Guest SLES12 SP2 machine's network adapter settings are not aligned with the physical network adapter settings in windows server 2016 host, i.e.  in hyperv SuSe SLES12  guest machine is showing "Unknown" Duplex and Auto-negotiation=off, but in windows server 2016 host, the physical adapter is showing Full duplex mode and auto negotiation is ON.   Is there a way to make these two network settings parameters in SuSe HyperV guest machine align with windows Host  network adapter settings ?

VmHostAssignableDevice of a PCI device to a 32-bit Guest OS

Hi,

Whenever I try to set over PCI-passhtru a PCI device to a 32 bits Guest VM (Linux Guest, Windows 7 Guest), if the VM is a 32 bit instance, the device is not enumerated and it does not show up into the guest.

For the same hyper-v configuration, but running a 64 bits Guest VM (Linu, Windows 10), then the device is enumerated and the drivers of the VMs can probe it.

Please, why does Hyper-v cares if the VM is 32 bits or 64s for PCI Passthru ? Are they are tuning with Hyper-v PCI enumartion when one needs to leverage PCI-passhtru ?

thank you,

Hyper-V / Windows Core 2016 device management

Spent several hours getting Windows Device Management to remotely connect to Hyper-V Core 2016. Only to discover later, after searching the web, this isn't going to work. Never. Device management is to be done with PNPUtil and / or DevCon. Not exactly the most user-friendly tools. So I wonder how you out there manage devices and drivers on Windows Core?

Hyper-V 2019 - replica issues

We just moved from 2012R2 to 2019 for Hyper-V hosts.

Trying to enable Hyper-V replica for the guests, but it is failing when I deselect the paging drive (didn't replicate them on 2012R2 to ease burden on network/WAN, etc).

If I include the paging drive, Hyper-V replica is established just fine.  But I can't go back and deselect it since that is defined at the time of replication being enabled.

Errors seen on source host & destination host are below.

I'm assuming this is a bug, just wasn't sure if known and on a roadmap to be fixed or if some other workaround exists.

WIndows VM Backup happening with network disconnection

Virtual Machine : Windows Server 2012 R2

Backup Tool : Commvault

Cluster in which the VM is running - Microsoft Failover Cluster 2012

Issue Description : The Windows VM is with simple configuration with 1 OS disk and other a secondary disk. Both disks are presented to the VM from CSV. In addition to these disks, 3 command device disks are mapped using virtual fibre channel enabled in the HyperV host. So, using this virtual machine configuration, the VM cannot be live migrated to other nodes.

During the time of backup, this VM is moving to save state and then it is getting restored automatically. Backup is getting successful. Since the machine is going to save state and getting restored, there is a brief disconnection of the VM network. We are getting about 10-15 Request timed out during this backup process.

Is this happening by design, as we have the command disks, attached to the VM using the virtual fibre channel? or is there a work around for a VM with such configuration to initiate backup without downtime. Please help

Hi Experts,

With WMI, there is a way to query and get the changedblocks using WMI but Is there a way to enable/disable RCT using WMI ?

With Win32 API, there are API functions to perform these operations but i am looking for WMI methods that can enable/disable/getRctState.

Hello,

We have a virtual switch setup in the Virtual Switch Manager and the adapter has been deleted by mistake using the "Change Adapter Settings..." of the Network And Sharing Center. Now, obiviously the switch is in a failed state and we just want to remove it from the list.

The Hyper-V console and the PowerShell command ("remove-vmswitch -Name "VSITCH01" - force") both returnsthe error below when removing the switch, because obivously, it can't find the adapter. How do I force remove the switch from the list?

Cannot boot a converted Gen 2 VM

I converted a VMWare Workstation 14 VM to Hyper-V (vhdx). Although I can boot and use it in a Gen 1 Hyper-V VM, I cannot get it to work in a Gen 2 VM.

My understanding is booting to a SCSI disk is not possible via Hyper-V, when although this worked in VMWare. I am then limited to booting a Gen 1 VM using IDE controllers. In a nutshell...is there going to be a performance hit here? Would I recognize any performance lagging compared to using this same vdisk in a VMWare-based VM?

In research, someone created a Gen 1/Gen 2 conversion script 5-6 years ago...a) will it still work with today's tech/software, b) is it necessary to do a conversion?

Windows Server 2019 Datacenter boot loops after enabling Hyper-V

I took my Windows Server 2016 Datacenter test server in my home lab (Dell R710 with two X5650s and 32GB of RAM) and installed Server 2019 Datacenter on it to try out the new features that are centered around VMs (Hyper-V) and data deduplication. The OS install went fine, but after enabling Hyper-V in Server Manager, the system goes through its normal reboot that occurs during Hyper-V enablement, then it proceeds to boot loop. Windows Server 2019 install media's boot repair does not fix the issue, and I cannot get in via Safe Mode. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

i want to know what is the recommended setup for hyper_v on a laptop with only one wifi adapter and no wire.
