Access Denied on VHD permissions

Hi,

I'm dealing with an incredibly frustrating problem where a VHD on a clustered shared volume has lost it's NTFS permissions, and I can't seem to correct them.

Initially the VM was on a clustered role but I've since removed the role as I read that Hyper-V manager could set the permissions if I remove the disk and try to re-add it from there. Unfortunately when I tried this it wouldn't let me add the disk again. Access Denied.

I've also tried modifying the permissions using icacles, trying to give full permissions to either an admin account or the 'NT Virtual Machine\<Guid>', but when I try to se the permissions I get an Access Denied on setting them. This was being run from an elevated command prompt too.

Any ideas what the solution is?

Thanks

Dave

Page file confusion

Page file confusion

I’m planning to create couple of virtual machines based on Windows Server 2019 (host Windows Serer 2012 R2). One of main will be MS SQL with 128GB RAM – it will be replicated to second site using Hyper-V Replica.

For few hours I’m trying to find advise how to correctly configure page file on the VM (host is clear – just leave it as automatic), and found many contradicting answers. Perhaps somebody can advise something. I found following:

  1. Disable completely page file as you have enough RAM and you don’t need it
  2. Set page file as 1.5xRAM, even if it is huge
  3. Set page file as 1.5x(Total machine RAM – RAM allocated for SQL)
  4. Set page file as automatic
  5. Place page file on OS drive as it won’t be used to much so it can be replicated without any issues.
  6. Place page file on dedicated drive to make sure it won’t se much bandwidth during replication.

All arguments which I read about above are reasonable but I have no idea what really should I chose.

VMs not restarting properly in Server 2016

I have several VMs running in Hyper-V on Server 2016 that we shutdown remotely and then reboot the host. They're all configured to automatically restart upon the host's reboot, with a startup delay varying between 30 and 600 seconds (each VM is different).

SOME of the VMs will happily restart.  SOME of the VMs do not start at all.

Looking in the Hyper-V event logs, there are absolutely no errors or complaints logged at all. It's as if it never even tries to restart those VMs.

We're not doing anything weird storage-wise; all VMs are using the same HDD storage area. We're well within the available RAM of the host machine (128GB). There's nothing odd about their boot options. Several of these VMs are identically configured to each other, and one will start while the other won't.

What in the world is going on?

HyperV Cluster Replica Broker error - "object could not be found" from Enable-VMReplication Powershell

$

Ok I admit it. This one is driving me crazy ;)

1) I have two Server2016 (Standard) HyperV Clusters - Source01 and DR01. Both part of same forest/domain.

2) Both Source01 and DR01 clusters have a HyperV Replica Broker installed and replication settings configured for Kerberos, Port80 and allow from any server.

3) I can initiate VM Replica successfully in both directions using the FailoverClusterManager UI. It creates the replica, transfers the initial data and everything appears to work.

However....

I need to create the replica using Powershell, but when I try to do it using the Enable-VMReplication powershell command it fails with:

I must be doing something wrong as the UI works. Perhaps some remote permissions not enabled? Remote WMI? something? hopefully some rookie mistake...

1) I've turned the firewall of DR01 off (just in case, just until figure out this issue)

2) The hyperV virtual machine management service is running correctly on both Source01 and DR01

3) the HyperV console on Source01 can correctly connect to DR01 and view/manage the VMs in the console - and vice versa.

Anyone got any ideas? Or seen this behaviour before?

thanks

Joe.

How to make Hyper-V based emulators receive UDP packets.

$

I am using Hyper-V based Android emulators.  They are great even though they have some issues none of which are show stoppers.

One issue is that they do not receive UDP packets.   I am wondering if anyone with insight of Hyper-V could offer a tip on where I should look into this, or let us me know this is impossible.

I have an Android app that receives UDP packets from servers.  The app tells servers which port they should send UDP packets.  This has been working on Android devices for many years flawlessly.  However, it does not receive UDP packets from these servers on Hyper-V based Android emulators.   It can communicate with these servers via TCP without any problem.

Any tip will be great appreciated.

BTW, turning off firewall makes no difference.  I am running the latest version of Windows 10.

Windows Error Reporting: EventID 1001 - Failover_clustering_resource_error

I'm running Server 2016 with S2D in a cluster to host Hyper-V VMs.  I get a ton of the following "Information" messages on my host servers running failover cluster, S2D, and Hyper-V.  It seems like the failover cluster has an error, but these are reported in the Application log as "Information" messages.  Anyone else seeing these or have any thoughts on them?  Are these just information or actually something to fix?

Server 2019 - Unable to create virtual network switch - file not found

$

I have built a new Win2019 server on new hardware and I'm attempting to build some VM's.  I'm able to create the VM and the VHDX's, but I am unable to create a virtual switch.  When I go through the wizard in the UI, I get the error:

Failed while adding virtual Ethernet switch connections.
Failed to connect Ethernet switch port (switch name='C808C825-5B67-45B9-B9F8-5650014F9A63', port name='6FOB7F7E-DC87-4BFF-8460-E91CF1CD7101', adapter GUID='{098FEDB7-OD63-4EB6-ABBD-EB3597E72B9}): The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002).

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Hyper-V role a half dozen times, rebooting multiple times.  I have run SFC and DISM with all the options several times.  I have updated my NIC drivers.  All with no change.  Interestingly, if I go to the NIC and try to add a new protocol, the virtual switch driver is not shown as an option.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks,
Joe

Hyper-V and new AMD Ryzen

The only anwers I've found are almost 10 years old...

Does Hyper-V work with AMD CPUs (Ryzen in particular)?

If not, will it?

As far as I know AMD is also going to make server chips so I guess there is hope for that.

Advice on Hyper-v storage set up

$

Hi Guys,

I'm after some advice please on how to correctly set up storage in a Hyper-v scenario.

I have a few questions if someone wouldnt mind giving me their two cents.

I'm looking for the best solution for performance for my VMs.

  • What RAID configuration is best for performance in a Hyper-v scenario? I've read that RAID10 is best for overall read and write performance particularly for SQL VMs.

  • If I had a RAID1 configuration am I best creating two partitions for OS and Data where HyperV will be stored?

  • I have a customer at the moment who are running VMs on one big C partition on RAID1. Would I get better performance if I partition this volume or would it make no difference?

  • If I have a SQL server VM running on one large partition, would I get any performance benefits If I created additional VHDX and moved SQL data and logs to their own VHDX or would it make no difference if they're on the same array/physical storage?

The top and bottom of my query really is:-

What is the best possible set up I could do to maximise the performance on a server with 1 or 2 RAID1s.

thank you!

Can Hyper-V (16 or 19) be Managed in WAC if its a Standalone non-HCI?

Testing a server core 2019 host, and have it in windows admin center. I was looking for a link to mimic the hyper-v management console but it seems I only can do that if the hyper-v server is in a cluster and part of HCI? Am I missing something?

Hello Guys,

I need some help with my server hardware requirements : I'm planning to have one physical server running the VMs

1VM Domain Controller with up to 200 AD accounts

2VM 1 Print/File Server

3VM Exchange Server with up to 200 e-mail address

Or 2 physical servers : first one to run VM domain controller and second VM exchange server.

and the second physical server for print/ file server ?

which option you think would give best performance? if I go with the second option , how much memory and cpu speed do you suggest ?

Hi

i have a problem with Live migration, i have 10 identical windows server 2012 r2, but on ehost wont allow us to migrate any clients into it.

i can only migrate into when the client is offline but the minute i power on the Client it immediatly migrates to another host and powers on.

the error i received from system center when i migrate:

My Windows Server 2008 R2 VM guest cannot boot up. It will keep on boot into the recovery console.

When I mount the VHDX file, I see that the drive file system become RAW instead of NTFS. I have perform checkdisk (chkdsk /r) on the affected drive. After finish the checkdisk, the drive is back to NTFS format.

But the VM still unable to boot into the Windows. I have mount the Windows installation ISO to perform the following:

1) startup repair

2) bootrec /rebuildbcd

3) bootrec /fixmbr

4) bootrec /fixboot

Please advise

Rouge Network Adapter

Hi,

Everything seems to be working however on Server 2016 I seem to have a rouge network adapter which is a Hyper-V Virtual Network Adapter, its disabled and won't start when double clicked is this normal?... Or is it left over... I can't remember if I reset anything up

I have also got a Hyper V Virtual Switch Extension Adapter which has an exclamation mark on it and has an error 10 cannot start error on it, however if I view hidden devices Hyper V Virtual Switch Extension Adapter #2 shows up fine.

I have the Hyper V connectivity working via the second NIC in the server and Allow Management Operating systems to share this network adapter is unticked.

Can all the above be ignored as it seems to be working?
