Supported Guess OS for 2012R2 Hyper-V

$

Hey guys,  I have a 2012 R2 Hyper-V / Fail over Cluster.

I'm looking to add a new DC / DFS server with the latest OS.  I'm curious if running a 2019 Guest Server is supported running on a 2012R2 cluster.  I'm hoping I don't have to upgrade the cluster to run a new VM (And I don't believe I need to, but I'd like some confirmation).

I see the two articles for supported guest OS, but they haven't been updated recently (for 2012R2):

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/supported-windows-guest-operating-systems-for-hyper-v-on-windows

and 2019 Cluster:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/supported-windows-guest-operating-systems-for-hyper-v-on-windows

I'm sure it's possible, but is it "recommended" and/or "supported" by Microsoft?

I am working on creating a powershell command to export live VMs on server 2019 with replication enabled to another server 2019 and I am wanted to check to see how the replication files are included in the export?  the replication occurs every 5 minutes on the host computer.

below is the basic command I use:

export-vm-name"VM name"-path"export path"

Hyper-V 2019 - Guest VM's shutdown unexpectedly

Hi,

Since upgrading my Hyper-V servers to Windows Server 2019, including KB4471332 from last night, my guest VM's do not power down on restart of the 2019 host.

I can confirm integration components are as up to date as possible, and each guest is configured to shutdown when the host restarts.

Each guest gets the "Why did I shutdown unexpectedly message".

The even viewer yields the following all within 30 seconds of restarting the host:

Shut down physical computer. Stopping/saving all virtual machines...

'ADFS' failed to perform the 'Shutting Down' operation. The virtual machine is currently performing the following operation: 'Shutting Down'. (Virtual machine ID 0CFDF648-EE9D-4141-9EBD-9A6D911C3442)
'ADFS' failed to shut down. (Virtual machine ID 0CFDF648-EE9D-4141-9EBD-9A6D911C3442)

The Update Orchestrator Service service terminated with the following error:
This operation returned because the timeout period expired.

Failed to restore configuration for port 59229EE2-C880-4BF2-9849-89A21EC17772 (Friendly Name: ) on switch 300C0E17-E123-4182-BE62-AAD1860BE841 (Friendly Name: ), status = Object Name not found..

Everything is configured as it was on the 2016 Hyper-V host.

The message ADFS failed to shut down because it is shutting down seems terribly odd to me.  Of course its shutting down, just need the host to wait. (Yes the registry is set to 120 as the default time for the host....)

Fairly simple to recreate....just spin up a 2019 server, install Hyper-V role, throw in a VM and test.

Any help would be appreciated, but my money is on it being another bug.

Multicast and Hyper V

When I create a private network on Server 2008 r2 with the Hyper V role (hotfix for 2012 guest vms installed). I then install server 2012 as a guest and install the dhcp, wds roles. Then MDT 2012 u1. When I perform a deployment using multicast, booting into a vm pxe boot, the performance is about 600-700kbps. The network utilization is at 1-10%. A 13Gb image takes ages. If I put the legacy nic into the mdt server and of course the client as it pxe boots the performance is 10000kbps.

This is the same on a external network. At first I thought it was a physical switch issue. When I created a MDT server on a physical server (1gbps port) and turned on flow control the multicast performance is great 10000kbps.

There seems to be a bottleneck in the hyper v switch as the mdt server as its conenction is 10gbps or a lot higher than 100mbps.

Can I configure the hyper v switch for flow control (or some other way)? When using the hyper v vm nic their are a lot of NACK errors and repair packets. Their are hardly any errors when all adapters are at 100mbps.

Just wondered if anyone else had encountered this issue.

I'm currently testing with a server 2008 r2 mdt vm guest.

Pros/Cons of various approaches to Hyper-V Backup

I am trying to understand main Pros and Cons of various approaches for Hyper-V backup. The methods/technologies are as follows:

1. PowerShell script running on the Host to export the VM and save VHD's (and all related files) to the NAS (set to run as a scheduled task).

2. Windows Server Backup running on the Host.

3. Various 3rd party solutions (including but not limited to Veeam, Altaro, etc).

What I have: 1 physical Host - Server 2016 (only role is Hyper-V) with 1 Guest VM (roles are AD, FS, RDS).

What I want/need: the quickest and easiest way to restore/recover when/if needed.

As you can see I'm not running a huge farm of Hosts and Guests. The setup is very simple. And the budget is ZERO therefore when/if talking about 3rd party solutions let's only discuss their FREE editions and what capabilities they come with.

I'm a bit hesitant to go with any of the 3rd party solutions simply because they all create their own/native backup files which can only be restored/extracted by using the same software (please correct me if I'm wrong here). I would like actual VM's/VHD's copied/saved to my backup destination because I feel that this is the simplest way to restore just by re-using the VHD on a new VM or mounting it to any Windows box to browse the files inside. Let me know if I'm wrong in my assumptions.

So based on my scenario (1 Host with 1 Guest) can people PLEASE discuss Pros and Cons of all 3 aforementioned approaches. E.g.: what are the benefits of using any 3rd party software as opposed to WSB? Or why WSB is any better than a simple PowerShell script to export VM's? Etc, etc.

Basically why you would or wouldn't go with either of the methods if you had a setup like mine?

SAN Volumes LUN same ID recommended?

Hi everybody,

Is it recommended, that all CSVs have the same LUN ID on each Hyper-V host?

Or is it Ok, if LUN 1 has LUN ID 0 on Cluster host 1 and LUN ID 4 on cluster host 2?

Thanks,

Guido

Virtual Machine management service memory leak, server 2016

$

Hi All,

Wondering if anyone has any ideas what might cause this?  One of my Hyper-v hosts seems to have a problem with the Virtual Machine Management service.  The memory usage for that service just continually climbs, it starts off at a hundred MB but increases by about 2 GB a day.  I got an alert yesterday that memory usage was high and the service was using 90GB!  There also seems to be other issues, it takes a long time for it to open the hyper-v console, it takes it a long time to start virtual machines, and sometimes when it reboots it doesn't autostart all of the machines it is supposed to.

Thanks!

Hello,

I am needing to run some tests of guest server 2016 datacenter vm systems.  Can I run these tests on a server 2016 standard?  Will it work?

I realize licensing wouldn't be compliant for production.

thx

Hyper-V 2016 QoS/Load Balancing

$

I have a Windows Server 2016 Datacenter Hyper-V Cluster with 4 nodes and 181 VMs running on it.  With the newest node that I just added yesterday, I have switched to a converged networking model utilizing 2 - 10Gb NICs for all Ethernet traffic.  Storage traffic is done over Fibre Channel.  I created a Team of the 2 - 10Gb NICs using the Teaming mode: Switch Independent, Load balancing mode: Dynamic, and Standby adapter: None (all adapters Active).  I then created a virtual switch in Hyper-V and created virtual NICs via PowerShell for Management, Cluster, and Live Migration.

Everything is setup and working so I decided to do some testing with Live Migration to see how fast it would go and how much network bandwidth would be used during the Live Migrations.  I setup a performance monitor to monitor the Live Migration vNIC to see what the peak bandwidth utilization would be.  When Live Migrating multiple VMs with a large amount of RAM assigned to them, I hit 14Gb of utilization at one point which tells me that Load Balancing in the team is working.  Since I now have all my Ethernet traffic flowing over the same NIC team and knowing that the Cluster vNIC is extremely latency sensitive in regards to maintaining consistent heartbeats between nodes, I want to guarantee that the Cluster vNIC will always have the necessary bandwidth to maintain communication between nodes.

I found Microsoft Documentation here about network QoS in Server 2012 but nothing for network QoS in Server 2016 or 2019.  QoS Overview in 2012  Is this no longer recommended in Server 2016?  What is the correct/best practice method for setting up networking in general for Hyper-V Clusters in Server 2016?

The Hyper-V role management tools are not installed

Hello,

I setup my first Hyper V servers (2016) and created a failover cluster with three hosts.  I have one VM imported as a Role in the cluster.  However, I cannot "Connect" to the VM/Role and I cannot view the "Settings" from Failover Cluster Manager.

When I click on either one, the Information column shows "The Hyper-V role management tools are not installed".  I have verified that the feature (Remote Server Administration Tools->Role Administration Tools->Hyper-V Management Tools) is installed on all three hosts and it is installed on my Windows 10 computer that I am trying to manage this from.

I am able to managing everything perfectly from Hyper-V Manager.  The only problem with Hyper-V manager is now that it is a Role in the failover cluster, some options cannot be managed from Hyper-V Manager.  So I am confused as to what is actually missing.  I appreciate your help!

Slow network performance using external Hyper-V virtual switch

$

Hello.

I have very bad network performance on Hyper-V (Windows Server 2019 Standard) external virtual switch. File transfer speed from Virtual machine to physical machine is about 40MB/s, while file transfer from Hyper-V host to same physical machine is aobut 120 MB/s. Server is new, Proliant DL 380 Gen10. 1 physical network card is for management and other three are in Nic Teaming connected to external virtual switch. I've already tried to use without network teaming and speed is still slow. I read about some problems using VMQ and Broadcom network cards(HPE Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331i Adapter), but this problem was known few years ago. SR-IOV is not enabled, because ethernet card does not support it. Driver release is latest. All suggestions to fix my problem are welcome.

Marko

HyperV Cluster Replica Broker error - "object could not be found" from Enable-VMReplication Powershell

$

Ok I admit it. This one is driving me crazy ;)

1) I have two Server2016 (Standard) HyperV Clusters - Source01 and DR01. Both part of same forest/domain.

2) Both Source01 and DR01 clusters have a HyperV Replica Broker installed and replication settings configured for Kerberos, Port80 and allow from any server.

3) I can initiate VM Replica successfully in both directions using the FailoverClusterManager UI. It creates the replica, transfers the initial data and everything appears to work.

However....

I need to create the replica using Powershell, but when I try to do it using the Enable-VMReplication powershell command it fails with:

I must be doing something wrong as the UI works. Perhaps some remote permissions not enabled? Remote WMI? something? hopefully some rookie mistake...

1) I've turned the firewall of DR01 off (just in case, just until figure out this issue)

2) The hyperV virtual machine management service is running correctly on both Source01 and DR01

3) the HyperV console on Source01 can correctly connect to DR01 and view/manage the VMs in the console - and vice versa.

Anyone got any ideas? Or seen this behaviour before?

thanks

Joe.

Hyper-V 2019 VM Cluster Replication

Ever since upgrading our 2 Hyper-V clusters to 2019 from 2012 R2 when trying to set up a new VM replication I get errors. Works for existing VMs replicating that were created before the upgrade but any new VMs fail. Enabling the replication seems to create the VM fine on the replica and creates drives at 4,096KB ready for replication but trying to start the initial replication fails with the error:

Doing the same process through the failover cluster gui I get a similar error. Says the replication was enabled successfully however initial replication could not be started. And goes on to say Hyper-V could not find the virtual machine on the replica server.

Has this yet to be recognized as a bug in Windows Server 2019?

Hello,

As i'm trying to enable Nested Virtualization within Window Server 2016, i have been having the below error's lately. I checked the setting/Configuration and everything seems to be mounted correctly. To kick the configurations for the VM, i Have enabled Mac Address Spoofing ON, Dynamic memory enabled and have set -ExposeVirtualizationExtensions $true.

From the Event Viewer i have below message:

  • The virtualization infrastructure driver (VID) is not running. (Event ID : 15350)
  • The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to start the virtual machine 'QNX' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running (Event Id : 20144)

I'm currently having a Virtual Server hosted by VMware trying to enable Nested Virtualization for the same.

Thanks for the Help!

Hyper-V Replica machine - sitting at "Modifying - Scheduled" state but working fine

We've got a number of clients sending their VMs to our datacentre using Hyper-V Replica and it works very well.  Recently we upgraded the Cluster holding the VMs from Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2016.  We did so using the rolling cluster upgrade process and the process worked without issues.  We now have a nice working 2016 server cluster.  We've noticed since the upgrade that initial 2 VMs and now 3 VMs have a status on the replica cluster of "Modifying - Scheduled".  These VMs continue to receive changes from the primary hosts and look to be fully in synchronization with the primary VMs in every way.  I'm concerned that it shows this status and can't find anywhere information about what it means or how it might have arrived at this status.

I'm keen to understand this and need assistance please.

Thanks

Wayne
