Hyper-V 2016 VMs stuck 'Creating checkpoint 9%' while starting backups

$

We have a two clustered W2016 Hyper-V hosts, every couple of days one of the hosts gets stuck when the backup kicks off. In Hyper-V manager the VMs all say 'Creating checkpoint 9%' It's always the same percentage 9%. You can't cancel the operation and the VMMS service refuses to stop, the only way to get out of the mess is to shutdown the VMs, and hard reset the effected node. The backup works for a few days then it all starts again.

The only events I can see on the effected node is:

Event ID: 19060 source: Hyper-V-VMMS

'VMName' failed to perform the 'Creating Checkpoint' operation. The virtual machine is currently performing the following operation: 'Creating Checkpoint'.

Can anybody help please? Cluster validation is clean. Hosts and guests are patched up.

Hyper-V VM Generation 2 - How to boot from .ISO

Hi guys,

Server OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

I have a VM Gen2 with following settings:

I can boot fine from the same .iso from a Gen1 VM so the .iso is bootable.

I know that the Gen2 VM uses SCSI instead of IDE, but I have no clue regarding how to boot from the .iso..

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Kenny

I have a problem with HyperV Integration Services and need to reinstall the software. I have a 2016 VM on a 2012R2 host. When I install the integration services I get "This computer is already running the current version of integration services (version 10.0.14393.0)

I have tried inserting the setup disk and running setup.exe /uninstall however this shows the same message.

Hyper-V on Windows 10 PC and setting up shared storage to create a DFS cluster

$

I have created two servers in the Hyper-V of my windows 10 machine. I want to set up DFS cluster (and down the line I plan to deploy two more server to create SQL cluster with Always On group).

However, I am not able to create the lab scenario because of lack of shared storage. Is there a way to create a virtual disk and then share it with both servers? I tried it but once one VM locks it the other won't have access.

Anyway insight to get this going would be appreciated very much!

LM for one VM hanged. VM is not registered on any VM, I cannot cancel migration, I cannot stop VM (as it is not on any Hyper-V registered on any host), I cannot register it again either

Basically nothing at all can be done as far as I can see

Anybody any ideas?

Hyper-V Guest Licensing (Host: 2016 STD / Guest: 2012R2 STD)

Hy there!

I apologize in advance for my ignorance with regards to Windows Licensing.

We have a dedicated server with OVH running Windows 2016 Standard, its license is working fine. We have now migrated (via block level disk snapshot) a Windows 2012R2 Standard VM into an Hyper-V guest running on this dedicated server, however, even tough Windows 2016 Standard should provide 2 virtualization rights, this VM is shown as "not activated".

From what I've read we should use AVMA, but that's only available in the Datacenter Edition AFAIK. Some topics suggest we use the same key used by the Host, but apparently that doesn't work between distinct Windows Server releases (2016 vs 2012).

I've seen some topics suggesting I have to order a "license downgrade" or something. Does that mean I should contact OVH (from whom I bought the license) and request a Windows 2012R2 Standard license for this Hyper-V VM?

This is go into production tomorrow, so please let me know how we can sort this out as soon as possible.

Thanks!

Hello All,

I'm having trouble activating virtualization features in Hyper-V 2012 Datacenter to virtualize within Windows server 2019.

Can you help me?

How to enable virtualization in Windows Server 2019 running on Hyper-V 2012 R2 Datacenter?
I need to install Docker on the virtual machine with Windows Server 2019 that is running Hyper-V 2012 R2.

I have performed the command below and I do not receive the information that it is not available for activation.

Set-VMProcessor -VMName <VMName> -ExposeVirtualizationExtensions $true

Thanks for all the help.

I created vm machine thorugh VMM which made in hyper-v.

However, I can't run the vm machine, the error messages are:

 start-vm : Faild to start 'VM-test02'.

Failed to start virtual machine because one of the Hyper-V components is not running. (Virtual machine ID: ~~~~)

what I checked :

0. I thought it might be the problem of VMM, so I enterd the hyper-v server which created using hyper-v of on-premise server, created vm using powershell, but same errors came out.

1. services.msc : make sure hyper-v turn on it

2. Powershell : type "Set-VMProcessor -VMName <VMName> -ExposeVirtualizationExtensions $true"

3. eventvwr.msc : At Hyper-V-vmms-Admin, there are no particular events except for 2 erros.

Faild to start 'VM-test02'.(Virtumal machine ID ~~~)

Virtual Machine Management Service failed to start virtual machine 'VM-test02' because one of the Hyper-V components was not running

4. Safend : I do not have Safend installed

5. cmd

- when type 'verifier', click standard(default) and choose unsigned driver autimatically, then it said," There is no unsigned driver"

- when type 'sc queryex vid, sc queryex vmbus' its status are "running"

- when type 'bcdedit', "hypervisorlaunchtype    Auto" came out.

I'm lost what to do turn on the vm.

please let me know how to turn on the virtumal machine.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Checkpoints

Hi There,

Recently one of my colleagues created a checkpoint for one of our VMs thats in production. This particular VM hosts the SQL server. Now everytime the back-ups run it creates a new sub-checkpoint for the temporary VM.

The problem is that the actual .vhd has been used more recently than the first checkpoint in this sequence although now one of the checkpoints is currently the disk file that's in use. My question is that if I delete this checkpoint subtree will it delete all the checkpoints and associated data since the .vhd has been used more recently than the first checkpoint? Or will it merge the checkpoints with .vhd anyway?

Should I click on the checkpoint and delete the entire subtree? Or just the first checkpoint in the sequence? The server is in production so I would like to avoid data loss if possible, and I know that using checkpoints on a production system is a really bad idea and addressed it with the person who created it already.

Ideally I would like to just delete this checkpoint tree have it merge with .vhd file and disable the ability to create them in the future.

Let me know if you need more info!

Thanks

Hi,

Was wondering if anybody else is having this issue..  I'm on Windows 10 RS5 (1809) and I'm unable to create a new VM and power it up..  It is coming up with the following error:

I came across this issue when trying to get Docker For Windows installed..  So went back to basics and tried to create a basic VM..

I've tried disabling the Hyper-V :

Rebooted and then re-enabling it:

Rebooted, same issue :(

So was wondering if anybody else has had this issue and resolved it?

Thanks

Bug with Wbadmin / VSS and VHD files

Hi There,

Whilst working on a little backup application I've hit a strange bug which has caused me quite a lot hair pulling and teeth gnashing. To reproduce:

  • Create a new VHD using Disk Part or Diskmgmt and format
  • Either mount the VHD to a drive letter or take note of the \\?\Volume identifier, problem occurs however you access it
  • Run wbadmin start backup where -backupTarget is your VHD volume/drive letter. For testing I would recommend you use a smaller partition so you're not waiting on this job forever
  • Wait for wbadmin to complete. I've also been waiting for the VSS service to move to the "Stopped" state so the job is definitely done.
  • Detach VHD
  • Reattach VHD and repeat backup process, Detach VHD, Attach VHD, repeat backup process, etc.

You usually have to run between 2 - 6 backups for the problem to occur but very soon you should find that all previous VSS shadows are lost and only one backup exists in the archive. The Windows System log will also show the message:

volsnap EventID 27

The shadow copies of volume [volume] were aborted during detection because a critical control file could not be opened.

0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The problem seems to be related to detatching the vhd file. As soon as you detatch the volume then the problem will usually occur soon after. If you do not detach the file then the error does not occur and you can even reboot and reattach and the wbadmin job works correctly.

I've also noticed that sometimes after the job is complete the VHD file is locked out (long after the VSS service has ended and the Block Level Backup process has ended) but Sysinternals Process Explorer does not list any process as locking the file. However if you try to mount the volume in disk part you get the message:

DISKPART>
DiskPart has encountered an error: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

It seems like either the VSS service or the Wbadmin job is not correctly closing the VHD and leaving it in an erroneous state so detaching the volume causes the VSS catalogue to corrupt.

Could the issue be logged as a bug and investigated?

Thanks very much,

Olly

Dear Support,

On one of the Hyper-v servers i receive te following error code.

An error Occurred while attempting to checkpoint the selected Virtual machine(s).

Checkpoint operation failed.

'OOS-TIR-FS1' could not initiate a checkpoint operation.

The guest host is an domain server with Windows 2016 server. Just for your information.

For backupping I use the software Veeam. The other serves are working correctly.

Hyper-V Not Recognizing SCSI Drive

$

Hello,

I am trying to add a SCSI Drive to a Windows Server 2008 R2 VM and the VM is not recognizing it. The host machine is Windows Server 2008 R2 as well.

  • The drive does not show up in Explorer or under Disk Management.
  • While looking under Device Manager the drive shows under "Other".
    • Under other it shows the HD name then "SCSI Disk Device"
    • Under properties of the drive the driver is "Unknown".
  • If I go to "Devices and Printers"  it shows under the "Unspecified" category but I cannot open it. I can only view the properties.
  • In the settings of the VM under "Integration Services" there is no SCSI option
  • I have ran the "Integration Services Setup"

As you can see I have tried a number of suggestions I have seen on this forum and others but with no luck. If anyone could help me see what I am missing it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Sean

Umerged checkpoint mess - orphaned .avhdx files

$

This is a Server 2016 Hypervisor and single server 2016 guest VM.

It looks like the backup software has been creating checkpoints that have failed to merge for about a week now.  There are multiple .avhdx files for the VM in the file system but the Hyper-V UI shows no checkpoints exist.

In addition the Get-VMSnapshot command in Powershell agrees with the UI - no checkpoints:

However, checking the machine settings in Hyper-V manager, I find that the hard drive is pointing to one of the differencing disks and the message "Edit is not available because checkpoints exist for this virtual machine."

To make matters worse, I have no idea how to do a manual merge for these avhdx files because both the root/parent vhdx and TWO of the child avhdx files show the exact same date modified stamp - the time I shut down the VM last night.  So I am not sure which avhdx is last in the chain.

Hyper-V is currently pointing to the differencing disk ending in B2C2 above. The one ending in CAC5 looks like it was created earlier (base on the .mrt file) but has the same stamp.

Also - at this point in the write-up I restarted the hypervisor, and when it came back up, the virtual machine had disappeared from Hyper-V:

So I went through the process of re-importing and registering in place:

This threw an error saying it failed, but the VM now re-appears in HyperV manager anyway. VERY strange.

I have started the VM again and will disable backup so no more checkpoints are created, but I really need to get this resolved quickly as the disk only has 116 GB of free space remaining and I do not want it to get so full that I cannot merge these checkpoints.

Help!

[Edit] - This post is for some reason being flagged as spam and so some of the embedded images are missing.  I am trying to resolve this so the images can be displayed.

SAN Volumes LUN same ID recommended?

Hi everybody,

Is it recommended, that all CSVs have the same LUN ID on each Hyper-V host?

Or is it Ok, if LUN 1 has LUN ID 0 on Cluster host 1 and LUN ID 4 on cluster host 2?

Thanks,

Guido

Error Access Denied - Opening VHD at \\UNC\PATH\NAME.vhdx and i got error %%2147942432 0x80070020

Error Access Denied - Opening VHD at \\UNC\PATH\NAME.vhdx  and i got error %%2147942432 0x80070020

The scenario:

Win2012R2 Hyper-V Cluster Node-A and Node-B

Win2012R2 Standard FileServer, sharing a bunch of VHD files via \\UNC\PATH\NAME.vhdx

PATH shared folder and Security NTFS permissions allowing Everyone:F, SYSTEM:F, Node-A$:F and Node-B$:F, full control, open permissions at the highest level

I´m connected to TS/RDP to Node-A and if i try to create a new VM it succeeds!

But...

If i´m connected via TS/RDP to Node-A, AND ALSO using the Hyper-V Manager pointed to Node-B

i got the access denied error  0x80070020

Again, i´m conencted  to the TS/RDP Node-A, but the hyper-V manager is pointed to Node-B (Node-B has more resources available)

Why is that?

Maybe a COM problem?

Issues with virtual NIC connectivity

$

Hi All,

In order to implement an hyper-V failover Cluster, i have a Lab like the following:

  • 2 nested HyperV Hosts with 2 "Physical" adapter each one
  • for each host, i've created virtual switch mapped to a NIC Team (made from the 2 "physical" adapters),with the option 'Allow Management OS to share this network adapter'checked, to keep remote access to them.
  • from this virtual switch, i added 2 additional virtual NICs, one for Cluster (heartbeat), and one for LiveMigration.

My problem, is when i assign IP's to cluster vNIC (for example) , i can't ping (reach) the cluster IP of the other Host ?

Host1

vNIC Management 10.12.0.1/16   Gw: 10.12.1.254

vNIC Cluster 4.4.4.1 |255.255.255.252

Host2

vNIC Management 10.12.0.2/16

vNIC Cluster 4.4.4.2 |255.255.255.252  Gw: 10.12.1.254

However, when i tried the same IP's on another NIC Team (not mapped to a vswitch), it pinged successfully !

hope that someone have the answer to my issue ?

thanks by advance
